Thumbnails on Desktop

I've got a new MacBook and since I like tinkering and learning the OS without support I've already ended up reloading the system just so I know how the installation goes.
But there is this thing I cannot fix, whenever I save images on the desktop, the thumbnail only shows half the photo and the rest is grey, but moving the file anywhere else results in the thumbnail getting "repaired".
Is there anyway to fix this issue?

This might be a slow creation process (of the image data on the volume itself) in comparison to the speed, at which the finder tries to build that thumbnail.
I watched this effect when downloading images from a web page by drag n drop. When the download rate was very low, the finder didn't wait for its completion and produced a thumbnail of what has been loaded till that moment.
So, take a look from what source the image data is coming from. Maybe your Mac is just too fast...

  • Thumbnail on desktop.  Can you do it?

    I was wondering if you could display a thumbnail of a jpg on the OS X desktop instead of the little preview logo with jpg written on it? For example, if I wanted to take a snapshot of a Baltimore Ravens team schedule, and keep the jpg on my desktop, but replace the preview image with a jpg or icon of a Ravens logo.

    Sometimes, if you don't have permissions on that file, it may not let you. I've seen this happen. As a test, try creating a new file with textedit. Save it to your desktop. Find a website with a small image (as a test). Select the textedit file and click Apple-i. Now, select the image you on the web page using the Shift-Control-Apple-4 key sequence so the cursor changes to a bulls eye. Click and drag over the image so that it puts it in the cut/paste buffer. Now, click on the icon for the textedit file, and paste (Apple-v). You should see the image you just pasted. To remove that image, just click delete while it is selected, and it will revert back to the default textedit icon. Let me know what happens.

  • Thumbnails on Desktop files?

    Is there a way to have thumbnails for file icons on the desktop?

    Click on the Desktop to make Finder active, then go to the View menu and select "Show View Options" at the bottom. You should get a smallish dialog titled "Desktop" and at the bottom there is an option to "Show icon preview"--make sure there is a check in the box for that option.

  • Thumbnails of Adobe formats no longer available after installing CC

    After installing CC and removing CS6, many formats (pdf, ai, tif, etc) no longer display as thumbnails in desktop/explorer but instead have reverted to program document icons.
    I have tried http://www.josh.biz/technical-notes/view-thumbnail-images-for-photosho p-psd-files-in-windows/ with no success. Any other techniques to get this important feature back?

  • Terrible iPhoto 6 bug, and some clues..

    Hi, everybody!
    I still don't have a satisfactory answer to this problem, which has essentially shut down my ability to use iPhoto. It seems that a number of people have this same problem (based on postings here).
    I shoot a bunch of digital photos, and import the as a roll into iPhoto. All similar shots with the same hardware. Some random percentage of them are not editable or viewable in a slideshow. Double clicking on the thumbnails (which all look fine), results in a blank screen in the edit view, but just for a few images in each imported roll. I have checked the permissions, changed the "open with" option, etc..
    Some clues, maybe this means something to someone here:
    1) When I drag an unopenable image to the desktop (by dragging the thumbnail), the desktop icon is a thumbnail of the image. When I drag an image that opens fine in iPhoto to the desktop, the icon is a generic jpeg file.
    2) Both of these files open fine in photoshop, and when I re-import them to iPhoto, they then open without difficulty.
    Any ideas? Have now installed both updates to iPhoto (6.0.2), but the problem persists...
    Thanks!!

    Hi rsmac,
    I know that CMYK used to give iPhoto 5 problems along with grayscale photos. IPhoto needs to have the images in RGB for all photo printing and book orders.

  • Best practice for images in APEX

    Hello All,
    I use APEX 4.2.2 .. Oracle 11g SOE...
    Speaking about the sample DB application. Suppose each product has more than one image. And that we have two Apps desktop & Mobile. Suppose Product A has 5 images.
    ===>>
    Does it mean that for Product A, I have to store 12 images as following:
    5 images for Desktop App where dimensions are e.g 640 x 480
    5 images for Mobile App where dimensions are e.g 448 x 336
    1 Thumbnail for desktop App 104 x 104 ( To show up on the report )
    1 Thumbnail for mobile App 50 x 50 ( To show up on the report )
    Here I noticed that the image are begin resized on the fly. As we upload images, we get thumbnails. Any comments ???

    Hello Roel,
    Thanks for the response. I am aware of Oracle Multimedia. Maybe, I was not clear. As I got from you, you agree that I have to store 2 editions of each image one for desktop and the other for mobile.
    do the proper scaling in the application itself.You mean I can use Height and Width Attributes of the img Tag to scale the images to be used in Report / List . But as I know this does not reduce the size of the image. If the list shows 20 record with 20 images, the mobile webpage will be slow.
    So, do you agree that I have to generate a two thumbnails (one for desktop and another for mobile ) for each PRODUCT, or you were refereeing to something else ?

  • ID CS4 get xmp-description

    Hallo,
    I've got a picture (picture = downloadlink ;-) ) and the metadata seems to be stored in namespace "http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/".
    ID CS 5.5 hasn't got a problem with it. It easy accessable over the linkXmp.description but CS 4 doesn't give any info.
    CS4 Bridge gives the info for the namespace:
    #target Bridge
    var thumb= new Thumbnail (File ('~/Desktop/37oc4040.jpg'));
    var md = thumb.metadata;
       md.synchronousMetadata;
      var nameSpaces = new Array ("http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/");
    for (var i = 0; i < nameSpaces.length; i++)  {
        var currameSpace = nameSpaces[i]
      md.namespace = currameSpace
        currDescription = md.description;
        alert(currDescription)
       thumb.refresh()
    but
    app.selection[0].itemLink.linkXmp.getProperty("http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/", "description");
    throws a error
    Any advise?
    Hans-Gerd Claßen

    Ok, guess I found a solution in this forum:
    app.selection[0].itemLink.linkXmp.getProperty("http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/", "title/*[1]"/* and so on "subject/*[1]""creator/*[1]" "description/*[1]"*/);

  • Quickly retrieve Exif metadata

    I've got a script for Photoshop CC 2014 that makes some exposure value (EV) calculations based on Exif metadata in camera raw files and then adjusts the image exposure to the target EV.  I know that this information is quickly available in Bridge, but when I try to get the metadata in Photoshop, I have to use the Document.open() command, and that opens the file (which takes a long time) instead of just grabbing the Exif metadata.  I can get it quickly in a Bridge script, but I'm having a hard time embedding that stuff in a Photoshop-targeted script (the BridgeTalk stuff is a bit confusing to me, or it isn't working on my computer).
    I've also attempted to use "bridge.executeScript()", but the bridge object apparently is not available to scripts targeting Photoshop (or else something is messed up with my installation).  Bridge is available in bridge-targeted scripts only.
    Here's how it's working in Photoshop scripting (I include only the relevant part).
    for (var nfile = nstart; nfile < nstop; nfile++){
    var Name = File(testListing[nfile]).name.replace(/\.[^\.]+$/, '');
    var file = File(testListing[nfile].path + "/" + Name + ".JPG");
    if (file.exists){
    app.open(file);
    else{
    app.open(testListing[nfile]);
    var DocInfo = app.activeDocument.info;
    var docRef = app.activeDocument
    EV[nfile] = CalcEV (DocInfo, BaseISO);
    app.activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
    (FYI, I use the jpeg file if it's there because Photoshop reads the exif from that file more quickly than it does from the raw file)
    Here's how it's working in Bridge scripting:
    firstfile = '7A7A5842.CR2';
    lastfile = '7A7A5843.CR2';
    var ExifProperty = 'exif:DateTimeOriginal';
    var ExifNamespace = 'http://ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/';
    app.document.deselectAll();
    app.document.selectAll();
    var myThumbs = app.document.getSelection("cr2");
    var fstart = -999;
    var fend = -999;
    for (var n = 0; n < myThumbs.length; n++){
        if (myThumbs[n].name == firstfile) fstart = n;
        if (myThumbs[n].name == lastfile) fend = n;
    var NumFiles = myThumbs.length;
    var fileThumbs = myThumbs.slice(fstart,fend);
    flen = fend-fstart+1;
    var EVarray = new Array(flen);
    for (var n = 0; n < fileThumbs.length; n++){
        var md = fileThumbs[n].metadata;
        ISO = md.read(ExifNamespace,'exif:ISOSpeedRatings');
        SS_string = md.read(ExifNamespace,'exif:ExposureTime');
        var test = SS_string.split("/");
        ShutterSpeed = test[0]/test[1];
        var Aperture_string = md.read(ExifNamespace,'exif:FNumber');
        if (Aperture_string == '') {
            var Aperture = Number(1.4); // assume Samyang set at f1.4
        else {
            var test = Aperture_string.split("/");
            Aperture = test[0]/test[1];
        var ISOadjust = Number(1.);
        EVarray[n] = Math.log(Math.pow(Aperture,2)/(ShutterSpeed*ISOadjust))/Math.LN2;
        $.writeln('ISO ',ISO,' SS ',SS,' Av ',Aperture, ' EV=',EVarray[n]);
    app.document.deselectAll();
    "Done...";

    bt.onError = function( sumatWentWrong ) {  alert(sumatWentWrong.body);}
    bt.send(10);
    //If you get here all should be well and you can process the data
    for(var a = 0; a< cameraRawData.Name.length; a++){

  • Opening Bridge from script

    Hello,
    I want to open a Bridge in specific folder, after finishing script, so a designer could watch through the resulted files, is it possible? If it's a simple answer, pls don't blame me, but I couldn't figure it out...

    This example will open the desktop folder in Bridge...
    var bt1 = new BridgeTalk;
    bt1.target = 'bridge';
    bt1.body='app.document.thumbnail = Folder("~/desktop");';
    bt1.send();

  • 8851 Background Image size

    I'm having problems with the thumbnail images on a 8551 phone.
    According to the docs at www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/8811_8841_8851_8861/10_5/english/adminguide/P881_BK_A92A3B94_00_adminguide-8811_41_51_61-10_5/P881_BK_A92A3B94_00_adminguide-8811_41_51_61-10_5_chapter_01010.html the thumbnail image sizes for the 8851 are 25% of the main image size (which is 800x480 at 24 bit colour depth so the thumbnail would be 200x120) But a few lines further down, the docs say the image size should be 159x109 (which is NOT 25% of the background image size and is a different aspect ratio.)
    I tried to open a couple of the existing thumbnails from Desktops/800x480x24 on my TFTP server, but they don't appear to be regonised as image files by my computer.
    I've tried images of 159x109x24 bit colour and 200x120x24 bit colour, all PNG, but none of them work as thumbnails.
    What are the specs of the thumbnail files for the 8851 phones?

  • Opaque Form Region w/o WPF

    Hello,
    I sincerely hope somebody might be able to help me. I've been wracking my meager programming skills on this problem for several weeks now, and I'm quite honestly at the end of my rope.
    Quite simply, I require a portion of a form to be partially opaque. My intent is to layer a RichTextBox that is extended to have a transparent background, over this region of the form. Please see this screenshot:
    I have attempted many different techniques to find the desired effect (the above was rendered using a technique not suitable for production). These attempts have included:
    TransparencyKey - Can only be 100% transparent, and forwards mouse events to the window below. Also, text rendered with anything but DrawString looks terrible due to anti-aliasing against the transparencykey instead of the bit data below. I am not prepared
    to "roll my own" RichTextBox to expose its paint event in order to override font smoothing and hinting.
    WPF - For reasons I won't bore you with, WPF is not an option though I am fully aware that it is my -best- option. I need to find a way to do this in WinForms.
    "Fake" Translucency Using Screenshots - This was the method I used for the screenshot above, taking a screenshot of the desktop, calculating the portion of the screen that corresponds to my RichTextBox dimensions and rendering it in a panel behind.
    Unfortunately, I can not find a way to take a screenshot of the desktop without my form being included in the screenshot, and am forced to hide the form momentarily while the screenshot is generated. This produces a flicker every time the background needs
    to be updated, and I am unwilling to release anything so ugly. The bitblt API will ignore layered windows in a SourceCopy, which was a great way to accomplish this in XP. Unfortunately, desktop composition "fixes" this limitation/feature (however
    you want to look at it). I do not wish to force my users to downgrade their UI in order to make my application look pretty.
    DWM - So many options here, yet none of them work. I've tried using the Glass effect via both DWMExtendFrameIntoClientArea and DWMEnableBlurBehindWindow. I would be happy with settling for the Glass effect. Unfortunately both of these techniques end up relying
    on TransparencyKey again, and the text atop the effected area looks horrendous.
    I've come to the belief that I may be out of luck in terms of "accurate" translucency for this project. As a fallback, I considered simply using a "transparency to wallpaper" effect, which would not include any other windows, just the
    portion of the desktop wallpaper that lies behind my RichTextBox. Again, this came with several frustrating setbacks.
    Wallpaper from File defined in Registry - This works okay, but the disk I/O is a little bothersome. Also, I haven't gotten this to work with anything except a stretched wallpaper image. Centered or Tiled Wallpapers have proven difficult to accurately replicate
    in a way that the borders or seams are accurate.
    DWM Thumbnail of Desktop - I've seen this one suggested a few times, but I can't figure out how to accomplish it. The handle pointed to by GetDesktopWindow doesn't seem to include a graphics context that DWMRegisterThumbnail is able to reference, and I end
    up with a blank screenshot of the correct dimensions. I was able to accomplish it by using an API Spy to grab the Program Manager handle for a quick test, but reliably returning the handle via FindWindow has proven difficult. AFAIK I am only able to reference
    it via the Class Name, and who knows when there might be some random window named "Progman" floating around (spyware especially will pretend to be Progman).
    I know this has been a lengthy post, but I wanted to be very clear about my desired intentions and previous attempts at solving this, just to avoid confusion or regurgitation of ideas.
    If anybody could help me with this, I'll email you a beer.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Mr Monkeyboy has come up with this possible solution (add a timer and RTB to the form).
    It uses a PictureBox with a RichTextBox, both of which are custom.
    When the Form loads it gets a screenshot of the desktop but the taskbar is not
    included in the image I don't believe. Then it displays the area of the image in
    the PictureBox that the app is currently over on the desktop. And if the app
    moves the image moves making it look like you are seeing through the RichTextBox
    (a control of the PictureBox) and through the PictureBox to the
    desktop.
    Also the PictureBox draws the image then fills a semi
    transparent rectangle over the drawn image for a color offset affect from the
    original desktop image.
    The app then does screen copies constantly and
    gets 5 pixels for comparisons to determine if the desktops image is different.
    Although it probably needs more pixel checking than just 5. Currently pixels at
    10, 10 and screenwidth - 10, 10 and middle screen and 10, screenheight - 10 and
    screenwidth - 10, screenheight - 10 are retrieved to be checked for color
    against previously retrieved colors at those locations. If < 4 colors match
    the form goes opacity zero, screenshots, opacity one and displays the new
    desktop image in the PictureBox.
    So the Form will blink but not often.
    The bad part is on my system the timer interval has to be 5 seconds or
    "checkcolors" trying to be altered are in use and the app crashes. I only tried
    from 50ms to 3000ms before moving to 5000ms where the issue quit. Therefore if
    the desktop alters, like the wallpaper changing, there is a 5 second delay
    before the app blinks and changes the image.

  • How does one report a CC bug?

    With no Creative Cloud window visible, switching to Mission Control does this... window image in thumbnail, blue window indicator in desktop image, Creative Cloud title.   None of this junk should be visible.  I'll send the image to Adobe if they care.

    When in window mode, it appears normal.  When pinned to the menu bar with the window visible, it appears proper (window is visible in thumbnail and desktop).  When pinned to menu bar but invisible on the desktop, the window title always and the shadow sometimes appear in Mission Control.
    There's another, more subtle bug with the CC window pinned to the menu bar...  if it's not visible in the primary desktop and you switch to another desktop (non-full-screen) and click the menu bar icon, Mission Control switches BACK to the primary desktop and shows the CC window.  Shouldn't work that way... it should show the CC window on the secondary desktop from which it was clicked.  I have multiple desktops enabled in Mission Control... which might be different than your configuration.
    No - I have no unexpected behaviors from CC or any other applications w/r/t desktops and Mission Control.  Other apps (or components) that use menu bar icons to display windows on different desktops (Google Drive, Dropbox, Messages/AIM, etc.) all work correctly.  Only the CC app seems to make a mess of it.

  • I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible?

    I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible? In a nutshell I want to point the link to an image in a directory that uses just part of the address.

    I know this is something you can do in Maya with linked files. I guess InDesign just isn't there yet.
    MW Design -  Yeah I think "Relative paths" is the right term! I want to create a Layout with an image in the center of the page - and then duplicate my folder structure with that file. With that, I want to replace the Linked image file with a diferent image file of the same name. In effect having multiple files of the same layout with different images.  I hope that made sense.

  • Acrobat Pro 9 - Disable thumbnail preview in PDF file icons on Desktop

    After upgrading to Acrobat Pro 9, the file icons of PDF files on my Windows 7  desktop changed to showing a thumbnail preview. I want to get the standard PDF file icon back for all PDF files. Can someone please tell me how?
    Thanks.

    Did you ever find an answer for this??? I had the same issue and was searching for an answer. I saw this and since I fixed mine I thought I would tell you what I did. Also, in case someone else finds this and needs an answer.
    Opened Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options
    Go to the View tab
    Check "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
    Hit Apply
    All your PDF files on your desktop should now show with the generic PDF icon.
    Reverse this to get the preview icon "thumbnails".

  • Thumbnail Icons on Desktop

    I have PSA SE V3 on my computer and recently saved some JPEG files received via email to my desktop. The icons for the files where thumbnails of the actual image in the file, not a generic JPEG icon. When I updated all Adobe applications the other day, both Adobe Reader and PSA SE were indicated as having available updates so I did both. WHen the updates were completed the images reverted to generic JPEG icons, not a thumbnail of the image and I can no longer replicate the behavior of what icon is used on the desktop. I did not set anything special in WINDOWs or run any imaging application originally. The save to the Desktop resulted in the icons as such. WHy did the update mess up my images.

    Under PSA SE, go to menu Edit --> Preferences --> Files, and uncheck option to use PSA SE for viewing JPEG files.
    It should revert back to what you were having.
