Thumbnails on Icons

Why don't Thumbnails appear on my folder even after enabling the icon preview?

In the lower left corner of the Import window is a small triangle pointing up or down. Clicking on it expands the window to show thumbnails.  IIRC. on first install, the import window opens in the collapsed (minimal) position.  Could this be your problem?

  • Safari is missing the thumbnail view icon.

I just updated my iPad to iOS 5 and now Safari doesn't show the thumbnail view icon in either landscape or portrait?

Yes, we want what we already had (wizard of oz style)....it's not about how it is, it's how it was (and isn't now). I wished they'd spent more time on trying to get the app store and the iBooks  store to remember where I was searching and not go back to page 1 after many, many pages!. Not waste their time on changing the whole kit and caboodle in a massive upgrade that gives us, original iPad/iPod users, something that we didn't want. What we had was fine...just needed a few tweaks and a few extras (maybe?)'not  a copy of a computer screen...that is way bigger to view in any case!

  • Is it possible to see thumbnails vs icons when opening a photo folder

I'm new to MAC. 2 days new. Not happy right now with MAC. Is there any way to view an open folder of photos as thumbnails, NOT icons?

    Hi Brian,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Whilst OS X doesn't have the exact same feature as XP in this respect, there are a variety of solutions:
    1) Import all your photos into iPhoto: this was included as part of the iLife suite, and is intended to be the primary method for viewing your photos in OS X. As you've just purchased your Mac you'll have iPhoto 6, which has a great number of features that make viewing your photos simple and efficient. If you don't want to use iPhoto, try Adobe's Photoshop Elements or KavaSoft's ShoeBox, amongst a plethora of others.
    2) Go into List view in the Finder (selectable from any window's toolbar, from the View menu or by hitting Apple-3), and turn on the Show Preview Column option in View Options (also in the View menu). Then, whenever you click on a file (eg. a photo) a thumbnail will appear in the right-hand column.
NB: Show Preview Column tends to be on by default on new Macs.
    3) Give all your photos thumbnail icons instead of generic icons, then go into Icon view (Apple-1) and ramp up the icon size. The Finder usually adds a thumbnail to image files automatically, but not always. To force a thumbnail onto an image file try using CocoaThumbX (freeware), or a similar utility.
    4) As only a recent user of Tiger, this one's just come to my attention. Select all the images you want to view, right-click for the contextual menu and choose "Slideshow". The first of the images will fill the screen, and you can then scroll through them using either the mouse and the bezel that appears, or by tapping left or right on the cursor keys. The bezel also lets you choose "Index Sheet", which will show you every photo at once in the form of a selectable thumbnail of each photo you've chosen to view in the Slideshow.
Hope you find one of these alternatives satisfactory.

  • Thumbnail view/Icon association change in Windows 7 with CS4

I just put CS4 on a virgin Windows 7 build and I'm struggling with a couple of things...
    1. How do I get Windows 7 to display the proper file association icons for image files? With XP it was easy to change an icon so that my JPG files uses the Photoshop JPG icon. But in 7 I have not been able to figure it out.
    2. Thumbnail view with an image preview is not working. No matter what size I resize the icon in 7 I still get a big fat "PS" icon and not an image thumbnail. If there's a "switch" somewhere that I need to flip, I haven't been able to find it.
If anyone can shed some light on these issues, particularly #2, that would be great. I'm amazed at how much a hard case Windows 7 is with file associations and Photoshop CS4. I got BMP, JPG, PNG, and others to open with Photoshop but it did require a bit more effort. With the "default program" list, Photoshop isn't even mentioned and I had to hunt the executable down to tell Windows which application to use. What's amazing is Quicktime is listed as a "default program" but CS4 is not.

OK, sounds like you found the File Type Association.
As for the display, for some years, the old psicon.dll has been gone from Windows. For a few versions, one could just add it to Windows, but I do not believe that has worked since Vista. Instead, use Bridge, and not Windows Explorer.
As this has been an issue for years, it could well be that MS, or Adobe, will rewrite the psicon.dll to work with Win7, or that someone else will take up the challenge of doing so. Could already be out there, and I have just not heard of it.
    Good luck,

  • Automatically generate thumbnail image icons for all pix and vids...

    hello,
i've searched around on the forums a bit about making the icons of my pics and vids actual thumbnail images made from the picture or the first frame of the video.
a lot of responses are mistaking this question for "how do i put the window into icon view?" this infact is not the answer that i suspect a lot of windows converts are looking for.
windows automatically makes such icons for all pix and vids if you put the window into icon view.
i notice in at cmd-j or in the window preferences there is a checkbox for "show image preview" or something like that, but despite this being checked, my pix and vids do not show an image preview. i'm gathering that this information does not exist in the resource fork which mac uses to organize photos.
is there any script or addition i can make to my system to automatically generate icons for pics and vids of all types? how to i suggest to mac that they add this functionality into the next release?
    thanks for your time,
    max

The Finder will create icons "on the fly" for nearly all graphic type files (jpegs, tiff, psd, and so on) and display them in both icon view and column view, provided the appropriate view preference has been set. Movies will just have the generic movie icon in icon view, and have a "live" preview in column view, ie you can play them in preview mode. If you want to add a permanent thumbnail which will display in all views, and whether or not the preference has been set for a particular folder in Finder, you'll need to add a thumbnail to the file. There are lots of ways to do this for static pictures, even rather clumsy ways to do it for movies, but the easiest thing is to get CocoThumbX:
    http://www.stalkingwolf.net/software/cocothumbx/
Drag and drop both static pictures and movie files onto the application and a permanent thumbnail is created. Indeed, it will create cool thumbs even for things like PDF and HTML files (code or rendered display). For movies to get a thumb, they must be in a format that QuickTime can read. It has a set of preferences for just how you want the thumb determined (eg random or at a certain time), and you can drop batches of movies or even folders to have it assign thumbs to multiple movies at the same time. It is a way cool piece of shareware.

  • Bridge does not mark thumbnails with icon after file has been worked.

I use Windows Vista and process photo files in Bridge using the latest Camera Raw plug-in and Photoshop CS2. Bridge does not mark each thumbnail with a icon as it should after processing. I use the same PS program on another computer using Windows XP and Bridge does mark each thumbnail with an icon. Why will Bridge not mark each thumbnail with an icon as stated in the PS manual on my Vista computer?

I use Vista and CS3, Bridge marks my RAW files when changes are made. Check to see if you have different settings in Bridge between the 2 computers. PS is not supported by Vista Basic.

  • DNG files not showing thumbnails preview icon on mac, after reduce/resize pixel count. Mavericks 10.9.2, Photoshop CC, ACR 8.4.0.199. Any Solution?

This is driving me crazy. With today's huge file sizes it seem to me that for the majority of pictures a pixel count of 12-16 mega pixels y more than ok size for editing and make printings; for the professional jobs is a good idea to have the biggest file we can. Due to that i was trying to convert some NEF files to DNG, saving some space in the process, But the impossibility to preview the picture's thumbnails and the file size (it displays 0x0) immediately take me to 1984, (Windows 3.11). and those are bad memories.
I don't know if this is an apple's or adobe's error, but it needs to be solved.
         Anyone with the same predicament?

Thanks for your insight JimHess.  Someone else on another post pointed out how Photoshop changes the color profile and other things and then trying to make this file into a DNG again confuses Mavericks (and, presumably, other flavors of OS X).  Admittedly, the process I described is unorthodox and not what may want to do.  Thank you.
A.J.: First, I am offended by your suggestion to omit my comment.  I was simply trying to provide help in finding a cause of a general problem people are having across the internet.  That problem, as you pointed out, is that modifying a DNG in some way in photoshop results in the thumbnail no longer being visible.  Your modification is the size.  Mine was not.  But it was a general modification in photoshop and an attempt to reconstitute the file as a DNG that seems to be common theme, whether this workflow makes sense or not.  Additionally, I'm very new to digital photography and tried to be helpful.  I would advise you (as an educator who knows the consequences of negative first-time experiences) to be more mindful that not everyone on here is as experienced as you and everyone can benefit from being clearer in their questions and their comments.
Second, as JimHess pointed out, in manipulating a DNG file in any of the programs in a way that alters the actual file (not changing some setting that is ultimately stored in a side-car file or does not actually alter the photo) is probably the root of the problem.  Changing the file size by altering pixel count may first require one of your adobe products to physically alter the file information in a way that stops Mavericks from being able to recognize the contents as RAW information.  Does this make sense?
    Best regards,
    Robert

  • Thumbnail or "Icon View" on Retina not rendered correctly.

The Icon View in the Finder does not render the icon images correctly on Retina Macs. You can tell best when setting the viewing size to 32x32 or 16x16, especially when you compare the same viewing size while in List View. I was hoping that Yosemite would fix this bug but it hasn't. It also occurs on the new Retina 5K iMac.

  • LR 4 Collection Thumbnail Badge/icon

The Thumbnail Badge for Collections is not showing on most of my images which are in Collections. Even when i put a new image in a Collection. The Thumbnail Badges in the Library View Options is checked off. When I right click on an image which I know is in a Collection(s) and choose "Go to Collection" it will show mw the Collection(s) that image is in but the Thumbnail does not show.  The other Badges do show.  LR3 which I still have on my PC works fine.  Any suggestions?

OK, this link will give you the details (and implications) of resetting the preferences file:
    http://www.lightroomforums.net/showthread.php?14226-Resetting-%28or-Trashing-%29-the-Light room-Preferences-file
Note that we don't know for certain that resetting the prefs will fix the problem, so I would suggest just rename the current file, then restart Lightroom which will create a new file. If it works, great...if not you might want to delete the new file and reinstate the renamed file, after which you might be faced with your workaround for each collection.

  • Why are so many app icons either pixelated or missing?  No photo thumbnails in Photoshop CS6 and missing icons for newly installed applications.

Even after a clean install of new applications and permission fixes and disk repairs, this problem persists.  Apple must have changed some specifications for thumbnail icons in Mountain Lion.   This is a particularly frustrating problem with Adobe Photoshop CS6.  If you attempt to save a CS6 file in any format, the thumbnail image icon just disappears or appears dark, with no image visible.  I have spoken with both Adobe and Apple about this and no one seems to want to accept responsibility, but I'm beginning to believe the issue is with Mountain Lion, as I did a clean install of a Mountain Lion friendly and compatible app today and the end result was that there is no icon for the application.  The application will run, but you cannot see an icon for it in the dock, only the name.  This is absurd!  Seems like paid "upgrades" are now becoming downgrades.   At least that's how I feel when I actually lose rather than gain functionality.

this is happening to me too. if i create a photoshop jpeg file it has no thumbnail icon. the file seems to be there by name only?

  • Can "Save for Web" generate a thumbnail instead of an icon?

Can "Save for Web" generate a thumbnail instead of an icon? Or can the icon be replaced by a thumbnail? Thanks.

I don't think Save for Web embeds any icons or thumbnails, because the whole point of Save for Web is to keep the file size down as much as possible for Web use by not including anything except the image and some text metadata that you choose. If you're seeing a thumbnail or icon, it was probably generated by your operating system and may only be local to your desktop.
If you do want to embed a thumbnail or icon into a JPEG file, you might get one by choosing File > Save As instead. The Save As command is intended to give you the most complete file possible, where Save for Web is designed to give you the smallest file possible.

  • Why no image thumbnail icons in CS6?

I recently upgraded from CS5 to CS6 and when I save a file, in any format, I get no image icon thumbnail for the saved file.   If I save the same file in CS5, I get the thumbnail image icon, but with severe pixelation of the thumbnail image.  It used to be I would have to periodically reboot the finder or fix permissions to resolve the latter issue, but now even that doesn't work.  I'm running Mac OS 10.8.

  • JPEG thumbnails on PC desktop converted to PSE13 icons when installed.

I cannot see what my pictures are unless I open each photo.  This makes it impossible.  I have checked this forum and searched for 2 days.  I have tried what some have suggested to no avail.
Also, it was my understanding that the warranty for 35 days covers full support.  There is no option to chat or call.  What's up with that?
    Please help.

Thank you so much for your response.  This is the first opportunity that I've had to reply.
This morning, first thing, I attempted to trouble shoot the problem on the pc desktop and was able to resolve the issue.  I did so by opening a folder with pictures (which only showed up as icons unless I double clicked on each one individually) right clicking, going to Folder Options, then View, and unchecking the box that said "Always show icons never humbnails thumbnails."  I have no idea how all my photos changed from thumbnails to icons but they did so after I installed PSE13.
The question I now have is within PSE13 - Editor.
The upper left quadrant is the word "Open", when I click this tab to drop down the "most recent" edited photos they show up as icons and not thumbnails.  Unless they have been renamed by me I can not tell them apart.  Any advise on how to view these "most recent" edited photos as thumbnails?

  • Adobe Bridge CS3 - does not display thumbnails for Canon 40D or 50D RAW files

I wanted to use Bridge to view my Canon EOS 50D RAW files and it does not display the thumbnails, just icons. I checked my 40D cr2 files and saw same thing.
I have purged the cache and rest the cache preferences and it has not helped. I would like to be abl eto view the thumbnails of the RAW files via Bridge if possible. Jpg files and Tif files can be viewed without any issues.
Am using Bridge version 2.1.1.9 and Pshop CS3 10.0.1

I have the exact same problem. I can view my RAW file thumbnails (which are .ARW files from my Sony A200 camera) in the Finder and in other applications, such as Preview, but not in Adobe Bridge CS3. I know that I did try purging the cache at one point to see if that would fix it, but then I didn't know what to do after that. Before I purged the cache, I was able to view RAW thumbnails in Bridge, but then they would not increase in size when I tried using the slider (at the bottom right of the Bridge window)
