Some photos will not open in Iphoto
Since updating to Mountain Lion, I find a few thumbnails will not open for edit or export in Iphoto. I just get an icon and a message that the original is missing or corrupt. What can I do?
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

"lost" album will not open in iPhoto
A couple weeks ago I opened iPhoto and received the message that my photo album could not be found. I created a new album so that I could upload my photos and then located my original album in the Pictures folder. I had not moved it or renamed it. I can still open all of these photos in Preview, but they will not open in iPhoto. How can I move this album back to iPhoto?
This may or may not be related, but around the same time a Dreamweaver .xml file (an application I have never used) appeared on my desktop, entitled "Album Data"."AlbumData.xml" is the name of a file created by iPhoto as part of the structure of an iPhoto Library folder. If you have only one iPhoto Library inside your Pictures folder, and it stopped opening normally at about the same time the AlbumData.xml file appeared on your desktop, then it's likely that the file's removal from the iPhoto Library folder (which you or someone else may have done accidentally) has caused the iPhoto problem.
Look inside the iPhoto Library folder that doesn't open normally when you start iPhoto, and if there is no AlbumData.xml file inside it, drag the one from your desktop into that folder. Then try opening iPhoto, and post back with the results. -
Iphoto will not open my iPhoto library......have tried everything. This has only happened in the last week.
I have tried everthing suggested on the forum.Did you follow these directions?
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 - select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired. -
Iphoto will not open my iphoto library
Hello, this is my first question. I have OS X 10.8.2, iphoto 9.4.1. When I open iphoto, it asks what library I want to use. I want to select "other library". I see an iphoto library 2, but when I click on the open button, nothing happens. I have tried opening the iphoto library while holding down the control and command keys, but I do not get an option to rebuild the library like was stated on one of the posts here.
ThanksIf you really cannot get iPhoto to recognize the Photo Library, try to rebuild using iPhoto Library Manager:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This rcent post by Terence Devlin explains what this will do:
Re: When I try to export a photo I get the message: Unable to create /Users/rw/Desktop/tarpon.jpg

Videos will not open in iPhoto
My 2008 videos imported and previousely played in iPhoto will not play. A window drops down saying "A necessary data reference could not be found." Any answers??
When you installed Snow Leopard you did not install Quicktime Player 7 which is needed to play the videos. Put in the SL install disk and select a custom installation. There you will be able to select Quicktime Player 7 to install. It will be placed in your Applications/Utilities folder. Then you will be able to play those video files from iPhoto 09.

Hi, Thanks in advance! Other cameras work fine (Panasonic and Nikon). Checked and the "USB bus" can see the camera, using "image capture" also can see the camera. Open iPhoto and gets nothing, any suggestions? I would like to avoid the card reader option. I want to put in the cradle and iPhoto pops up, import done. Necessary to update to Casio Version 1.02? Any suggestions are most welcome!
Nevermind! There is a little vertical button above the word USB, I pushed it and iPhoto pops up, problem solved.

IPhoto will not open iPhoto Library
Hi Guys
I recently rebuilt my Mac - I wiped it completely clean and then installed a newly purchased copy of Snow Leopard. Before I did that I saved my iPhoto Library to my wife's MacBook Air. Not sure if this matters, but after I loaded Snow Leopard onto my Mac, and realized it didn't have iPhoto, I installed iPhoto from my Leopard CD.
My problem is that iPhoto 8.1.2 (424) will not open my iPhoto Library. The error message I get reads: You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto.
Any suggestions? The version of iPhoto on my wife's machine is 9.1.1 (527), and my photo library was definitely opened while it resided on her machine.
Thank you
StuartThe only solutions are:
Restore from back up or
Upgrade your iPhoto.
When that Library was opened on your wife's machine there was a warning, saying that you would no longer be able to open this Library with an earlier version of the app.

I am using iphoto '09 version 8.1.2. (424). Today a few photos will not open. I can see them as thumbnails but when I try to open them they start to open and then a big ! mark appears. I have not had this problem before. Can you help

Suddenly, one of my iPhone libraries will not open with 86 gigs of images: it opens and says there are no photos, yet by other looking, all the images are there and when backing up, it takes an hour.
Somehow iPhoto application will not recognize the images (over 13,000) in the file.
Any suggestions as to how to fix the matter<
Dr. Harris, BermudaTo move from iPhoto 08 (which is v7) to iPhoto 11 (which is v9) requires that you purchase iPhoto 11. Your software update is running just fine. V7.1.5 is last version of iPhoto 08.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
As to the problematic library:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption. -
I recently ran monolingual and removed all but the intel-64 bit architectures. Now my iphoto (along with Idvd, garage band, imovie) will not open. Here is the message that I get.

I have reinstalled Mac OSX 10.6.3 and done the updates from there.
I have reinstalled ilife 11 from disk and done the updates.
I have deleted all the suggested files and then redone install and updates.
I have tried just reinstalling iphoto and doing updates.
Is there any way to get a replacement - /Library/Frameworks/iLifeSlideshow.framework/Versions/A/iLifeSlideshow
file with the right architecture? -
I had a repair done on my MacBook Pro and had to have a new hard drive installed. The Apple Auth Repair Shop then updated the OS from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5. Now my iPhoto v 9.2.3 will not open and it sounds like it will not work with this OS. Can you please advise?
You may need many other updates to retain compatibility with Lion. I suggest you reinstall Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, you will need to erase the drive first. Be sure to backup your data if you haven't done so already.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X. You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. -
I have been working on a wedding slideshow for days and have over 3,000 pictures in albums on iPhoto. It suddenly will not open without upgrading to Aperture and I can't find any of my photos!!!! I need these photos, to complete the video, not to mention I don't want to lose them. I have had trouble ever since upgrading to Maverick.
Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database. -
This is a strange one! iPhoto will not open - I get the message that it is not the right version or something - see attached. (StartUp drive is SCS Mac 500HD)
OK so I take my 36 hour old full SuperSuper! Backup and make that the startup drive - D1-LaCie 505gb MBP BkUp2. I use iPhoto (from the backup or the "main" drive) and both work fine-- all libraries from both HD's as well as other internal and external drives work (yes, I have a second internal HD on my MBP-13" - removed the DVD drive).
So I am guessing this has to do with something corrupt in the iPhoto plist on my main drive or ???? something. The HD's all have been verified and are perfect; and disk permissions have been repaired.
Any comments on what to "trash" / "rebuild" or ??? --- again, all works perfectly when I startup from my BackUp FireWire external HD. All iPhoto libraries open just fine.
THANKS! I'll keep experimenting but haven't found a solution yet.
Best regards,
Steve Schulte
