Thumbs & incorrect previews

I'm frequently getting preview images that are totally at odds with the thumbnails in the folder I'm looking at - ie from a different folder & on some occasions from a completely different hard drive. If you open in ACR, the correct image appears to allow processing. However, if you then go back to the thumb, the wrong image will still appear in the preview pane. I've purged the cache, thrown away the cache and rebooted - all to no avail. Any ideas out there?
Mac OS10.4.11: Bridge 2.1.1.9: Photoshop 10.0.1:

You have to choose between the soft previews (which you get when you have High-quality Previews UNchecked in Bridge Preferences) and the spurious previews and thumbnails when you have High-quality Previews checked.
Pick one of those evils.
I opted for the soft previews.
This issue is nothing short of a disgrace and a black eye in Adobe's face. The failure to fix it borders on criminal negligence.
There is no way I will be giving Adobe another dime of my businessif this is not fixed in CS3, and I do not mean in CS4 nor in Lightroom. This has be fixed ASAP in CS3. Period.
If you do opt for soft previews and true thumbnails and true previews, remember to purge the cache through the Tools menu in Bridge,
folder by folder.
DO NOT use the global purge cache command in preferences. That one is broken and the cache will NOT rebuild correctly after using it.

  • Bridge 2.1.1.9 stopped showing ACR edits/crops in thumb and preview

Bridge has started having a new problem, intermittently but frequently, in that it will not consistently show the ACR edits when it displays thumbnails or previews.
Specific example I am looking at now. Raw Nikon D300 NEF, open in ACR, crop and adjust various settings, hit "DONE". Return to bridge, and after a couple seconds it shows the edits. All as expected.
A few minutes (or seconds or hours) later, the edits disappear from bridge, from either the preview, the thumbnail, or (usually) both, and the display reverts to the original NEF.
If I open it again in ACR the edits are there, remembered, correct.
Stranger still, if I scroll the thumbnails so that the selected image is not visible, then scroll back, for about 2 seconds the correct edited, cropped thumbnail appears, then it flicks back to the unedited NEF. the preview does not change (and is wrong).
I have cleared this cache, cleared the entire cache - no impact. I have deleted the XMP and started over, it works for a bit, then may come back, or moves to some other picture (some are working correctly, some not).
It DOES show the little crop/edit symbol above the thumbnail, it is just not using it.
And it is not consistent, I have two shots in the same directory. One is showing a correct thumbnail and when I click on it then un-corrected preview. One is showing neither one correct.
Even weirder, the one with the incorrect preview, if I use the magnifier, it shows the correct version (i.e. post ACR) while the unmagnified version is the original NEF.
I've tried high-quality preview, and not.
I've tried software rendering and not.
I have rebooted and checked and all updates are applied.
This has just started happening, I have hundreds of prior D300 shots that worked fine, just the last couple of days. And it works fine for SOME shots now, just not all (I'd say about 50/50 of new shots). Except so far I have not seen it happen for any prior NEF's, just the ones I have downloaded in the last few days. And I have updated nothing on the system, at least not knowingly (Adobe stuff sometimes updates automatically, but I noticed nothing).
    Any ideas?
    Anyone else see similar problems?

Stacy,  I have found from experence that sometimes we are not seeing the same things, or understanding the same words.  So don't intend to put down your skills but try this and see if we are on the same page.  I don't have CS4, just CS3 so my pictue may be a little different.  Am using NEF from Dx40 camera.
When image opened in ACR with double click, or right click, across the bottom of the ACR screen I have the following options; save image, open image, cancel, done, no OK option.
Doing edits and clicking Done saves the edits.  Save image has option to save in different formats.
Copy one of your NEF images to a test folder.  Then go to Edit/develop settings/ clear settings.  This will delete all edits.  Delete the XMP file.  Then do an drastic edit in ACR, like changing exposrue to make it very dark, click Done.
When you go back to bridge and click on NEF image the Preview Panel should show the edits.  I can not see edits in my thumb as I use Quick thumbnails.
Waht do you see in preview window?  The original or an edited NEF?  Do you have a circle symbool in the upper right hand corner of thumb indicating an edit?

  • Missing Thumbs and Previews

I've been having some problems with projects that have lost their thumbnails and the previews that go with them. All the metadata is there and if the disc in in the preview will show. All these images are referenced and on a CD/DVD.
While messing around to see what might be "on" or "off" I noticed an Activity icon to which I've added to my tool bar. When I go to my project that have the missing thumbs and previews the activity window shows updating library, building previews, and Paused.
Is there a shortcut or something I can do to get that to Resume. Buttons on bottom are only pause and cancel task, no Resume.

    Thanks, station_two!
I have surprised there all pictures from OneDrive on Windows 8.1.
When i copy those out of OneDrive thumbnails generated
Then copy all folder with images back and all works good!
    Very strange. But good!

  • CS5 Bridge thumbs and previews do not color match ACR or Photoshop

In newly installed CS5 Bridge (part of Suite), thumbnails and previews are not reflecting the color adjustments in ACR or of the image in Photoshop itself.  High Quality is still default as is writing cache to folders.  I don't see the old cache files in the folders either.  CS4 did not exhibit this issue for me.  Upon opening a folder, or after purging cache, thumbs are initially displayed with saturated color, but only for a second or 2 until they are redrawn.  Other applications that I have been working with for years and use the image previews are not displaying properly now that I have CS5.  What's going on here?  It appears that I am looking at only the imbedded previews!

    Narrowing it
down...I am working with a MacBookPro, using 2 monitors,
There have been more issues with two monitors but I can't recall them
    exactly at this moment.
A few things that come to my mind, first check the Camera Raw preferences
and double check if the option Apply Autotone Adjustment is NOT checked.
There have also been issues with Open GL and 2 monitors but that should
effect the images in PS and not Bridge I would believe. Also see what your
main monitor is in the OS monitor preferences and try what happens if you
    change that order.

  • Help!! Bridge cs4 keeps rebuilding thumbs and previews

I recently upgraded to PSCS4 and Bridge is so unstable I can't believe it. Clean install on G5/4G Ram/128Vram/dual monitors/OS10.4.1. 100% previews enabled/cache distributed to folders enabled. Software rendering enabled. I'm in the process of renaming images and filing within folders. Bridge still crashes intermittently after renaming. But, now it has started rebuilding the cache for folders for no apparent reason. I've purged and rebuilt the cache for each folder. Everything is fine. Then, all of a sudden, I go to open that same folder of images and the thumbnail/preview/100% previews start building all over again. I've reset Bridge to default prefs and started over more than once, but this is really getting ridiculous. I've NEVER had so many problems with any Adobe product. Any ideas what is going on? Is the cache dumping for some reason and rebuilding, or does Bridge just keep rebuilding and rebuilding the cache and I'm going to discover a massive cache folder one of these days. Any help would be sincerely appreciated!!! It's really a drag to have paid for a CS4 upgrade, only to have to go back to using CS3. AAAARRRGGGHHH! Thanks again!

Have you tried to set Software Rendering to off, specs say that is automatically on with dual monitor wit VRAM less then 128 MB so you should just be able to turn it off.
Also you need to let Bridge cache the contents a little longer after the spinning circle bottom left has stopped indicating it is caching. (have no experience with software rendering but it is IMHO not the best to use.)
If you have nothing seriously cached you could try a fresh start:
    Quit Bridge
delete the Bridge3 cachefile from your user library manual from the cache folder to the trash.
Also in user library preferences delete the Bridge3 plist file (both cache and plist are rebuild fresh after you restart Bridge.
Restart Bridge holding down option and choose reset prefs. Try again and don't use Software rendering if possible.
But you also might first consider to create a new user account for testing if Bridge is also on this account not properly working, just to rule out a corrupted user account.

  • Incorrect preview in filmstrip mode

My apologies if this has been discussed before. I have searched and not found anything relevant.
Sometime after switching to high quality previews (see the Advanced section of the Preferences dialog), this started happening. When selecting a thumbnail in the filmstrip, sometimes a totally wrong image comes up in the preview window. It happens randomly and intermittently, but once it selects a wrong image, it will always display that image for that thumbnail. Please see the following for an example.
    http://www.teglis.com/photo/misc/bridge.png
The image chosen is not even in the folder open in Bridge. It is always an image that I have looked at at some point in recent months, but I may have deleted it in the interim. Suspecting the cache, I've purged it, compacted it, exited Bridge, rebooted and gone back in. Yet the problem continues.
Has anyone else see this? Does anyone have any suggestions?
Windows XP, AMD Athlon 6000X2, 4GB RAM, three hard drives totaling about 1TB, dual 1793x1344 monitors.

  • Incorrect previews in LR

Right click > edit in > merge to HDR Pro in PS and tone mapped 32 bit HDR file with the ACR in PS. After saving the file, I can not get the correct preview in LR in the develop module ... any advise. Thanks a lot.

If you try what I wrote in the first message ...
"Right click > edit in > merge to HDR Pro in PS and tone mapped 32 bit HDR file with the ACR in PS. After saving the file, I can not get the correct preview in LR in the develop module"
and if you look at the previews created in PS and created in LR ... then it should be clear that in what way I mean previews are not correct.
Thanks a lot for your interest ...

  • Incorrect Preview

    Hi! Members,
I am new to Oracle Report. Why is my preview
in HTML not the same as my actual output?
The preview which I just mentioned was the
option before I sent for printing but it
was printed, it was shown with my actual
report. How do it set my preview correctly?
    Thanks a lot.

  • Thumbnails and preview wrong size

Has anyone got any ideas on why some of the books we have had made for us in the past now have incorrect thumbnail/preview page dimensions (see screenshots)?
Is it an iBooks bug or a CSS, XHTML problem?
    Thanks,
    Anthony

    Tony
The network drive is a 4TB Raid 5 WDSharespace supporting Mac files - all other family laptops and desktops are Apple.
However in checking yesterday I did find that the network drive is degraded and that 1 of the internal disks appear to have failed - today I will get a replacement and have it rebuild, and will also get a firewire linked drive to connect direct to my computer to house my photo library (WDSharespace will be backup) and will check how Aperture is working after going through this. I do not see how the drive could affect what aperture is doing to the thumbs and Previews but worth being absolutely sure the setup is 100% before returning to the issue.

  • Why doesn't LR let us use embedded/standard previews (at least optionally)?

I bought LR but cannot commit to using it mainly because it is too slow importing and browsing previews but also because LR's previews are worse than the embedded previews in RAW images or JPGs as displayed by other standard programs like Photo Mechanic, Breeze Browser or ADCSee.
I shoot Canon RAW (then convert the CR2s to DNG) and occasionally JPG (1DMkII) but I get hundreds of images from friends and family, mostly JPG, taken with many different cameras. The vast majority of these pictures look terrific in PM, BB or ACDSee, etc but they look significantly worse in LR. LR renders its own previews from RAW files instead of using the excellent embedded preview that's already there and LR also somehow changes the JPG preview so that it looks bland and off color in comparison to the same image viewed in PM, ACDC or BB on the same computer. I assume LR's color management or color space is what changes the previews (and thumbs) so they look different (bad) in LR than they look in other standard programs.
Why can't we at least have the option of using embedded previews in LR and display them normally like PM, BB and ACDC. Then LR would be fast (like PM, BB and ACDC) importing and displaying previews and we would not have to fiddle with exposure or color adjustments to get decent previews. Yes, I can get LR to just about match (sometimes exceed) the image quality of other programs but only with massive fiddling with individual images (the camera calibration controls are not sufficient by themselves) and that is a massive pain in the butt.
I, of course, have read many posts about color management. But I refuse to buy expensive color calibration tools and go through that expense and aggravation just to accommodate LR. My pictures already look great in PM, BB, ACDSee and web browsers and on other non-color managed computers. I think LR should be able to be operated in a standard manner so it is consistent with other standard software. The fact is that the vast majority of all amateur photographers, even pretty serious folks, do not hassle with color management because standard software displays very nice images already.
Another point. Some folks like to use Canon or Nikon or other RAW converters instead of Adobe's (for all or some images). If they develop their RAWS in DPP or Capture NX, etc, then import the images into LR, LR renders its own previews which disregard the work done in the 3rd party converter. This is pretty annoying and virtually prevents such folks from using LR. Other programs that use the embedded previews display the adjustments made in 3rd party RAW converters very nicely.

    Bill Wood

Thanks for the replies. Sorry I could not respond sooner.
Nobody addressed my question. Why is there no option in LR to use embedded previews in RAW files and why is there no option to display JPG previews in a standard color space, presumably sRGB, like other standard software - Photo Mechanic, Breeze Browser, ACDSee, etc, etc?
LR's insistence on rendering previews from RAW files makes the program too slow and it forces users to diddle with settings to get previews that look normal - meaning match what 99% of the rest of the world sees on normal non-color managed computer screens. Folks who want rendered previews and non-standard color space (ProPhoto) and all the rest of us who just want standard previews by default should both be accommodated. Just give us the option to choose.
I just downloaded IDImager, a competing database type DAM program, for a trial. It does give users the option to use embedded previews for fast import and display or it will render previews from RAW if you choose that option. So it can be done and an embedded preview choice makes the program much faster and easier for most people to use.
Just a few comments about the replies:
Lee Jay said LR doesn't use embedded previews because:
"Correct...that's because it's a RAW converter and must display what you'd get from a RAW conversion."
Well, with respect, I cannot agree. First, LR is not just a RAW converter, its much more. If it was that limited, I never would have bought it and neither would anybody else. I already have ACR in Photoshop. Second, it is not mandatory that LR render previews from RAWs. It could optionally use embedded previews if that option was offered. Why do some folks lobby for lack of flexibility? I bet even you naysayers would use embedded previews sometimes, like when you want speed to show pictures to your family, friends and don't need to fester over image adjustments.
Lee Jay also said regarding the difference between my JPG previews in LR vs. other standard software:
"That is likely the fault of your monitor profile, which LR uses and the other programs (probably) don't. It could also be caused by you having "automatically apply auto tone" set, or by applying a preset on import."
No, it LR's fault, period. Every other program I have ever used displays my pictures just fine (Photo Mechanic, Breeze Browser, ADCSee, etc, etc, even Windows free Picture and Fax Viewer works fine. Yes, I can diddle with LR's settings and get nice previews but I don't want to diddle with every image. And it ain't my monitor profile - I can delete it or change it and the issue remains. LR makes different previews from standard software because it renders previews from RAW data and uses a non-standard color space. Camera calibration (or presets) is not a reasonable solution for everybody. I have several cameras, my kids have many different cameras, friends have different cameras and I get images from all these people - so I have a ton of very different images in different lighting and I am not about to setup numerous different calibrations or presets to see previews in LR when I get excellent previews from other standard software that uses embedded previews and produces great previews with no work whatsoever. All I am suggesting is the option to use embedded previews and a standard color space. Again I must ask why do some folks argue for lack of flexibility?
John McWilliams said about LR's power:
"The neat thing is you can make the image look just about anyway you want without loss of quality."
I could not agree more - LR is a good program! But, I don't want to diddle with every image. Most of them are fine, in fact, terrific right out of the camera. I just want to see them faster and I want them to match what other people see on standard non-color managed computers. If PM, BB, ACDSee and others can do it, so can LR.
    David Edwards said:
"The images that I want to see in the Library section are RAW images with all the adjustments I have made to them and certainly not the embedded JPGs. If I wanted to see those I would have shot JPG."
This is fine and no doubt makes perfect sense for David's workflow. But, why advocate against an option to use embedded previews for those who would find that useful? I too shoot only RAW with my DSLR cameras because I want the best images and the ability to use all of LR's (or DPPs) conversion powers when appropriate. But, as I said above, the vast majority of my embedded previews are good enough right out of the camera as viewed in PM, BB or ACDSee so I don't need to make any adjustments. :) Only LR creates a problem my rendering less than desirable previews by default. I also want to note that embedded previews do, in fact, display all changes made in LR and I cannot tell any difference in quality on screen between embedded previews and rendered previews when I adjust the LR version to match the default embedded preview and compare them side-by-side in LR and PM, for example.
    David also asked:
"Do you need a RAW converter or an application to display images?"
Both. Preferably in the same program. LR is supposed to be an all-in-one solution. It certainly will be when it gets more mature, I hope. I am a amateur so my main need is to see my pictures. I like them and enjoy them but LR is too slow importing and displaying thumbs and previews in Library mode and its previews usually need adjustment. So right now I am forced to use PM, BB or ACDSee all of which are way faster importing and browsing images and they use embedded previews that are fine, even excellent, by default.
I think Adobe is missing out on a significant number of potential users because LR does not provide the options I am requesting. I am certainly not the only person who wants faster importing and browsing and previews that look good by default. And, as I mentioned before, folks who use other RAW converters are also excluded since they cannot see the changes they make before importing images into LR because LR will not display embedded previews.

  • And again, Bridge not showing previews, CS4, very aggravating

I've tried all the stuff on Adobe's page about this, but like many others it's not solved my problem.  Did the LRoom 2.7 update and the ACR 5.7 update and since then Bridge CS4 only shows crappy icons instead of previews for RAW files.  I've tried everything, to no avail.
I'm hoping someone has found a solution for this, it's really a pain and I'm at wit's end.
    Thanks.

Thanks, and I've tried all those moves, and still the same thing.  Along with
Lightroom 2.7 I'm running Photoshop CS3 so I have two ACRs in the Plugins
folder since CS3 doesn't recognize the new ACR (5.7).  When ACR 5.6 was in
    there, all was fine.
There is your problem, you've messed up with the plug ins
Forgot about CS3 but I believe that ACR 4.x was the latest for that, CS4
needs 5.x (5.7 is the latest update) and they are not interchangeable.
You can only have one plugin per CS but you can have CS3, CS4 (and soon CS5)
as each one folder in the path for root library/AppSupport?Adobe/Plug Ins
containing the dedicated version of ACR plug in.
If you don't have CS4 but need Raw support for your files you should use the
free Adobe DNG Converter. After converting the originals to DNG you are able
to open them in the CS3 ACR window.
However keep in mind that ACR CS4 had a lot of benefit regarding highlight
recovery and fill light etc as CS5 will even have better results
Everything was working fine until the updates were done yesterday.  Even
stranger, when I first launched Bridge after the updating was done, I saw the
preview files for a second or two, then the icons replaced them as if by
magic.  Does Adobe have David Copperfield working for them now?
That is normal behavior and far from magic I'm afraid...
Every time you change settings in ACR or make a new default setting or start
using another ACR plug in the files need to rebuild the cache for thumbs and
preview. You only saw a glimpse of the old ones, the new ones should start
to rebuild but there is no plug in for reference anymore

  • Color Cast Only On Mac Generated jpg files When Viewed In Bridge Cs3 Preview

    Hi,
( Issue With Cs3 Bridge Viewing Jpgs - Getting Colour Cast on the Mac Generated Jpgs Files Only When Viewed In Bridge Cs3 On PC )
Using  CS3 creative suite Mac & PC and viewing all files on the PC.
We have  psd files when viewing in bridge they are  ok and save jpgs via PS3 both on the Mac & PC off the same PSD file that we started with.
But when viewing these jpg files in bridge we get a red cast only when viewing from the Mac generated files from the same PSD we started with.
When we open the jpg files up in Photoshop all of them are ok we no issues only when viewing in bridge we get the red cast.
All PSD files have the same information content:
    Bit depth
    Colour space
    Pixel size
Why are we getting this happening.
    Thnx

Thanks very much for that lead, NormanPCN. I do have Auto Tone checked, though the rendered files in the example above do not have XMP sidecars. I will try unchecking Auto Tone even so, and post back when I see what happens.
    Thanks again,
    Kieren
EDIT: Bingo! I took Auto Tone off in ACR Preferences (in Bridge) and the non-RAW files immediately regenerated thumbs and previews. They now are indistinguishable from the PSD. There is still the very slight difference which I mentioned between the PSD and the CR2. While that seems odd, it is small enough to be relatively trivial.
    Many thanks!

  • Bug: Previews not generated properly when Soft Proofing is enabled in LR5, LR5.2 RC

I am experiencing problems with previews in Lightroom 5.0 and Lightroom 5.2 RC.
I have noticed incorrect previews under the following circumstances when Soft Proofing is enabled:
    1. When I make modifications (like cropping), the preview in the Navigator panel does not update until I uncheck (and recheck) the Soft Proofing option.
    2. When I am paging through several images at 100% or greater, the view in the main window, while zoomed in correctly, does not provide the correct resolution (blurry) until I either uncheck (and recheck) the Soft Proofing option or zoom out and zoom back in.
    I am using:
    Lightroom 5.0 64-bit, Lightroom 5.2 RC 64-bit
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
    Canon CR2 RAW files
16GB RAM, plenty of local disk space
Note: I have not done extensive testing on this, but many of these files are stored on a network drive, so I don't know if there is some sort of bug in the optimized routines for network drives/folders.

I have the same problem as michaeln2 and adobe 1230931.
    I use Lightroom 4.4.
When I am in the Develop screen and I turn on Soft Proofing, then about 20% of the time the image goes blank.  If I go back to Library view and reenter Devleop, sometimes the image will show up, sometimes not.  If I advance to other images, sometimes they'll show and sometimes not in the Soft Proofing mode.  Sometimes rotating an image in Library mode and going back into Develop "wakes up" the Soft Proofing and sometimes not.
In other words, the soft proofing feature is, as michaeln2 says, functionally useless.  I'm surprised that no fix has been posted on this thread.  No point upgrading to Ver 5 either...as it seems to be buggy there as well.  Help!
