Thunar Automounting

After trying on and off for a few months, my arch install finally worked!  I've very happy with the speed of the system.  Everything seems so much more responsive!  However, I have one problem that I can't seem to fix.  I am running i686, 2.6.36-ARCH with openbox and thunar.  After looking through several wiki pages, I cannot get thunar to
1. mount my external hard drive or usb drive
2. recognize my windows ntfs drive (sda2)
Can someone please help?  I'd greatly appreciate it!

it sees them, and i am running dbus as a daemon.  I also tried running dbus-launch thunar, and I get the same error:
Rejected send message, 1 matched rules;
type="method_call", sender=":1.20" (uid=1000 pid=2977 comm="exo-mount)
interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume"
member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0
destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=1628 comm="/usr/sbin/hald)).
Could you tell me how I could fix this?

    Hello!
    First of all sry for my english, i never learnd in school or something...
    Let's begin. The first question is that after i installed zsh Midnight Commander (mc) freeze after a while, there is a log or something where can i look..i really like zsh but for now i'm not really seeing his advantage...
    The second question is about something else, thunar-volman not want to start, it says that i need to --device-add Hal uid, i tried to add manual an usb stick but not work eiter, when is used openbox i put thunar-volman & to autostart.sh, and it worked. should i try another volume manager to do the job ??

    Try one of the patched versions of mc as the normal version is somewhat buggy, http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?O … _Search=Go or vifm
    Use http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ivman for automounting.

  • Virtualbox USB problem.

    Hey everyone,
    Just got myself a Tomtom ease, and i'm trying to connect it to the Tomtom Home app under windows xp running in Virtualbox 3.2.6.
    When I plug the device in thunar automounts it.
    It shows up as a usb device in my virtualbox menu, but is greyed out.
    I unmount it in thunar and it is still greyed out in virtualbox.
    I have also tried "umount /media/INTERNAL" and still, no luck in virtualbox.
    Anybody know of any solution to this problem?
    Thank You.

Also make sure you are not using the OSE version.  USB is not enabled.  Hope that helps, best of luck.
    That was my initial thought as well, as I have had the problem with my ipod.
    I have not yet used my ipod or the new tom tom under virtualbox with my latest Arch build however, and the solutions you've suggested don't work this time around.
    Thank you for the input though.

    Hello!
    I was able to figure out that things would mount correctly in Thunar when I did

  • [solved] Thunar: no automount for removable hard drives

    USB flash drives are automatically mounted by thunar-volman. However, removable USB hard drives are not.
    These are the settings of thunar-volman: http://i.imgur.com/24mHHSs.png
    In order to mount removable USB hard drives, I have to manually click on the drive in the side pane.
    Can someone reproduce that behaviour that automount only works with flash drives but not with removable hard drives?
    Installed packages:
    ~ $ pacman -Q | grep thunar
    thunar 1.6.3-1
    thunar-volman 0.8.0-1
    Last edited by orschiro (2014-01-09 15:10:06)

    The removable hard drive is a 1TB external USB drive with an ext4 filesystem. It has nothing to do with permission issues but seem to be a general problem of thunar-volman refusing to mount larger drives. It is also stated here.
    I could enable automounting of this drive by running devmon from the udevil package.

  • [SOLVED]Thunar refuses to automount

    Hi there.
    My problem is as follows.
    I have a fresh install with thunar refusing to automount (mount removable drives when hot-plugged enabled) any external USB device. (All are under 1TB)
    Thunar does not display any external devices, but when I manually mount as root from terminal they show up in thunar and all is dandy.
    Installed lxpolkit and added the rule to "allow mounting a filesystem on a system device for a group"(added myself to storage group), have also tried the other rule: "Allow mounting a filesystem on a system device for any user" but without any sucess.

  • Thunar doesn't want to automount my drives

    I'm using awesome with Thunar for automounting, but the automount doesn't seem to work (and yeah, I've got thunar-volman installed). In my .xinitrc I have this:
    wicd-client &
    thunar --daemon &
    exec awesome
    But I have to start another session of Thunar (not using --daemon) for automounting to work. Help?

  • Automounting partitions at startup on XFCE and Thunar delayed startup

    Hi,
    I'm having two issues, both related to Thunar. I have NTFS partitions in the same hard drive that my Arch installation resides. They show up in the left panel of Thunar, and when I click on them, a dialog asking for authentication shows up and after entering my password the partition gets mounted.
    I want this partition to be mounted at startup. Is manually editing /etc/fstab the way to go, or should I do it in some other way, maybe messing with gvfs configuration, or something like that?
    The second issue, is that Thunar takes a long time to start up on first run, even with the daemon running. Any idea why this could be?
    Thanks!

    Hmmm. The most obvious difference between the two users is that Thunar starts off viewing /home/user when you start it as a normal user and /root if you start it as root. Could it just be that you have much more stuff in /home/user like hidden directories? And it takes Thunar a long time to populate the treeview (if you set it to display a tree in the side bar)?
    Try different combinations like "Thunar /root" as a regular user or "Thunar /home/user" as root. If that's not it, I would recompile Thunar in order to get debugging information https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De … ing_Traces and ask an xfce developer who really knows.

  • Thunar can't automount fixed disks?

    Made the switch from Gnome/Compiz to Xfce4/xfwm4, very happy with the speed difference!     Maybe one day I'll give openbox a go, anyways
    This computer boots 3 OS's, Windows 7 (same disk) and OSx86 (seperate disk).    Gnome-volume-manager mounted the hfs+ disk and the ntfs partition automatically on boot.     Thunar-volman doesn't seem to.    It does mount my usb keys perfectly.    I googled quite a bit but can't find a clear answer as to whether thunar-volman can mount fixed disks, or seperate partitions automatically.
    Yes, I know I can add them to /etc/fstab.     I was just wondering if this is normal behaviour or if something is broken.
    Happy Arch user....

  • Hal / thunar-volman refuses to automount camera

    A few days ago after i did a pacman -Syu, udev, klibc-udev and hal were updated.
    I plugged in my camera (HP R607) and thunar-volman didn't "see" it at all (no desktop icon appeared, no auto-mount, and no device in /dev).
    After that i ran ./etc/start_udev (with the camera plugged in) because i thought that udev rules needed to be reloaded (this was stupid as i later figured out that this isn't the way to reload the rules). It threw out some errors (stupid, again - i din't copy the error messages).
    Now every time i plug the camera a desktop icon appears with the device (udev sees it now), but it doesn't get mounted and i get this error:
    Failed to mount "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_part1_size_2059382272".
    Given device "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_part1_size_2059382272" is not a volume or drive.
    After i unplug the camera a error appears on it's lcd saying that the SD card can't be read and it needs formatting. No luck after formatting either.
    If i try to manually mount the camera:
    mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/cam -t vfat
    mount: /dev/sdb1: can't read superblock
    dmesg|tail:
    ASC=0x4 ASCQ=0x3
    end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 39
    sd 8:0:0:0: Device not ready: <6>: Current: sense key=0x2
        ASC=0x4 ASCQ=0x3
    end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 39
    FAT: unable to read boot sector
    sd 8:0:0:0: Device not ready: <6>: Current: sense key=0x2
        ASC=0x4 ASCQ=0x3
    end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 39
    FAT: unable to read boot sector
    I tried deleting ~/.config/Thunar/volmanrc and the camera is auto-mounted without any problems, but after i un-checked the "browse removable media when inserted" in the volman configuration panel the problem re-appears.
    I removed the SD card from the camera, and the device gets mounted properly, but this doesn't help me very much since i can't store more than 4 photos on the internal memory of the camera.
    Does anyone have any ideea what the problem might be? I think it's thunar-volman's fault, but i'm not really sure.
    edit: usb sticks, cds, etc. get auto-mounted just fine.

    I have also encountered this problem, but I finally managed to find some information about the problem.
    It seems like this is a kernel bug, that causes the udev/hal to read at the end of the sd-card in the camera, which at least Nikon doesn't like.
    A quick solution is to add "--skip-raid" to the vol_id commands in the udev.rules. This works for me at least.
    The other solution is to wait for the next kernel release which should include the fix.

  • [SOLVED] Openbox+Thunar, how to show usb devices in thunar?

    Hi.  I've been running a pretty standard Xfce environment for a while.  When I plug in a usb drive, I get a new item pop up in the "DEVICES" section of the left panel in thunar (note, it doesn't automount the device, it just shows that it's there and only mounts it when I click on it...I like this behaviour).
    Now, I'm setting up an even lighter-weight environment, just openbox and tint2 with thunar as the file manager.  But when I'm logged into the openbox environment, I don't get the item in the "DEVICES" section in thunar (but it still works fine in xfce).
    If it run thunar from the command line and plug in a usb drive I get this message in the terminal
    (thunar:21205): thunar-WARNING **: Failed to launch the volume manager (Failed to execute child process "thunar-volman" (No such file or directory)), make sure you have the "thunar-volman" package installed.
    I don't see why I would need thunar-volman if it works fine in xfce.  If I install thunar-volman and do the same, I get this message
    thunar-volman: Unsupported USB device type.
    thunar-volman: Unsupported USB device type.
    thunar-volman: Unknown block device type.
    So I'm wondering if maybe there is a daemon that is autostarted during an xfce session that makes thunar probe for devices to be plugged in or something like that.  Why does it work in an xfce session, but not in an openbox session?
    Last edited by Pacopag (2013-03-14 15:52:32)

    Thanks for your replies.
    henk:  I tried installing polkit-gnome and creating the rule as per the wiki, but it didn't work.  Volume detection seems to work fine in xfce without this package.
    jv2112:  I added udiskie to .config/openbox/autostart and it seems to work.  I've had problems with udiskie in the past; it seemed to have some trouble unmounting the drives properly after a write as I would find that the newly written files were corrupt.  But it seems to be working fine.
    I'll mark this as solved, but I'm still curious as to how xfce-thunar is mounting the usb devices.
    One clue is that with udiskie, devices get mounted to /media, whereas in xfce they get mounted to /var/run/media/username/ (or something like that).

  • Thunar, xfce4 and polkit-gnome

    I've spent 3 hours this morning trying to understand mount permissions in Thunar and, thus, how polkit controls user access.  I'm pleased to say it hasn't been a total waste of time because I have a much better understanding of what polkit does and why.
    However, in my investigations I have seen countless forum threads by people trying to fix their Thunar mount problems.  The simple answer to almost all of these threads is "install polkit-gnome and restart".
    Arch uses auth_admin_keep for internal mounting permissions - for that to work you MUST have a PolicyKit Authentication Agent installed (right?) - polkit-gnome is exactly that.  Without polkit-gnome there is no application to pop-up and ask you for your password, which is exactly what the auth_admin option wants to do.
    So, how is it an optional depend for thunar?

    .:edit:.
    Whether automounting is or isn't an "optional" feature is largely irrelevant.
    My main point is that policykit requires a User Authenication Agent to function correctly - gnome-session and kdelibs pull in polkit-gnome and polkit-kde respectively by default.  Why is XFCE different just because they don't ship their own User Authentication Agent?
    anonymous_user wrote:It is optional because Thunar will still work without it. Mounting may not work, but file manager duties like moving and deleting files do work. At least that is my understanding of optional dependencies.
    Yes, that was my understanding too... 5 years ago.
    Udev and PolicyKit exist to make mounting disks, amongst other things, "as standard" across multiple environments, this functionality has been incorporated in Thunar.  Mounting in Thunar is as much a feature as moving and deleting files.
    It's also worth mentioning that I didn't set out to make automounting work in Thunar - I just had these Drives appearing in my sidebar but when I clicked on them I got an error.
    That's the definition of broken from a users perspective.

  • Thunar without XFCE, can't eject iPod and other travails.. [solved]

    I'm trying to get my Thunar set up to where it automatically shows my ipod when plugged in, but I can right click the icon to unmount it as well.
    I used the udev wiki to add a set of rules for automounting usb devices, so my ipod now automatically loads, but there are two problems.
    1. There are two icons for the ipod in the Thunar shortcuts pane. One says Apple iPod and shows an error on left click of 'Failed to mount "Apple iPod Music Player" - Given device "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/ volume_part1_size_41094144" is not a volume or drive.'
    2. The second icon shows the name of my ipod and I can click it to view the drive, great, but on right clicking and choosing Unmount Volume, it shows an error of 'Failed to unmount "iPod" - The volume "iPod" was probably mounted manually on the command line.'
    And a seperate, but perhaps related problem is when I press the eject button on my CDROM drive, an error shows as 'Failed to eject "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_mode_DVD_RW_ND_3540A". Right clicking the icon in Thunar and choosing eject does work for this, though I'd prefer to be able to use the eject button.
    Does anyone have any ideas on a way to fix these problems?
    Thanks!

    Nonono...there's a bug with thunar-volman and ipods that causes them to load twice and whinge about it.  Note that loading two devices is, as far as I know, the intended outcome, since ipods have a mysterious second partition for storing the hopes and dreams of steve jobs himself.  I don't really know what it's for, but you can use an hal policy file (fdi file) to prevent hal from loading it.
    The bug has to do with thunar-volman trying to load it and failing.  You can view the bug here:
    http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2789
    Actually, that's a command.  You'll need the first two diffs for the fix: thunar-volman-mount-only-mountable.diff and thunar-vfs-add-is-mountable.diff
    First, we'll fix thunar with the following PKGBUILD:
    # $Id: PKGBUILD,v 1.8 2007/06/01 22:28:43 tobias Exp $
    # Contributor: Andrew Simmons <[email protected]>
    pkgname=thunar
    pkgver=0.8.0
    pkgrel=5
    pkgdesc="new modern file manager for Xfce"
    arch=(i686 x86_64)
    license=('GPL' 'LGPL')
    url="http://thunar.xfce.org"
    groups=('xfce4')
    depends=('exo>=0.3.2' 'shared-mime-info' 'pcre' \
    'desktop-file-utils' 'libexif' 'hal' 'fam' \
    'startup-notification')
    makedepends=('intltool' 'pkgconfig' 'gtk-doc')
    patchname=thunar-vfs-add-is-mountable
    options=('!LIBTOOL')
    install=${pkgname}.install
    source=(http://www.xfce.org/archive/xfce-4.4.1/src/Thunar-${pkgver}.tar.bz2
    thunar-vfs-add-is-mountable.diff )
    md5sums=('9f7b0945d6a235391049f6818fb4d188' 'e16532876e24ec10549b274baf262f73' )
    build() {
    cd ${startdir}/src/Thunar-${pkgver}
    cp $startdir/$patchname.diff $startdir/src/Thunar-${pkgver}
    patch -Np0 -i ${startdir}/src/Thunar-${pkgver}/${patchname}.diff || return 1
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --libexecdir=/usr/lib/xfce4 \
    --localstatedir=/var --disable-static \
    --disable-gnome-thumbnailers --enable-exif --enable-pcre
    make || return 1
    make DESTDIR=${startdir}/pkg install
    sed -i 's:x-directory/gnome-default-handler;::' ${startdir}/pkg/usr/share/applications/Thunar-folder-handler.desktop
    Stick thunar-vfs-add-is-mountable.diff in the same directory, and add the install file (call it thunar.install):
    post_install() {
    update-desktop-database -q
    gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f usr/share/icons/hicolor
    post_upgrade() {
    post_install $1
    post_remove() {
    update-desktop-database -q
    gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f usr/share/icons/hicolor
    op=$1
    shift
    $op $*
    and makepkg -i to install it.  Now let's tackle thunar-volman.
    First the PKGBUILD:
    # $Id: PKGBUILD,v 1.6 2007/04/16 18:41:24 tobias Exp $
    # Contributor: Tobias Kieslich <tobias (at) archlinux.org>
    pkgname=thunar-volman
    pkgver=0.1.2
    pkgrel=4
    pkgdesc="automatic management for removeable devices in thunar"
    arch=(i686 x86_64)
    url="http://xfce-goodies.berlios.de/"
    license="GPL"
    groups=('xfce4-goodies')
    depends=('thunar>=0.8')
    makedepends=('intltool' 'pkgconfig')
    options=('NOLIBTOOL')
    patchname=thunar-volman-mount-only-mountable
    install=${pkgname}.install
    source=(http://download.berlios.de/xfce-goodies/${pkgname}-${pkgver}.tar.bz2 thunar-volman-mount-only-mountable.diff)
    md5sums=('910de35c398f70b66b38803bdfdd26f1' 'b7ee9150294f772ed08129fd08328b9d')
    build() {
    cd ${startdir}/src/${pkgname}-${pkgver}
    cp $startdir/$patchname.diff $startdir/src/${pkgname}-${pkgver}
    patch -Np0 -i $startdir/src/${pkgname}-${pkgver}/$patchname.diff
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --libexecdir=/usr/lib/xfce4 \
    --localstatedir=/var --disable-static
    make || return 1
    make DESTDIR=${startdir}/pkg install
    Then add the thunar-volman-mount-only-mountable.diff file, and the install file (call it thunar-volman.install):
    post_install() {
    gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f usr/share/icons/hicolor
    post_upgrade() {
    post_install $1
    post_remove() {
    gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f usr/share/icons/hicolor
    op=$1
    shift
    $op $*
    and makepkg -i again.
    They also provide an fdi in the bug report to prevent the extra piece from mounting, but I haven't gotten it to work.  At least the bugs are gone.
    BTW I found these trolling through the ubuntu gutsy launchpad.
