Thunar & Squeeze/Xarchiver RAR Decompression Issue

Trying to decompress ~100 MB RAR archives results in Squeeze 0.2.3 and Xarchiver 0.5.2 (via repos) hanging and freezing the system. Thus is with either the thunar-archive-plugin, or through Thunar UCAs. The same happens with squeeze-0.2.90-svn-r29419 and 7z (from p7zip 4.61) as well. unrar via the CLI and PeaZip 2.5 both handle the decompression of large files gracefully. Anyone else experience the same?
UPDATE: Looks as if the issue is specific to large, passworded RAR archives and Squeeze. Although Squeeze will not hang the system with the same file on the same box under Ubuntu.

OK, I got it.
In case someone else has this problem. The Trash and Removable Media icons were checked in Desktop Settings/Icons, but none of them showed up on the Desktop. The reason turned out to be the way how I started up xfce: instead of
exec ck-launch-session xfce4-session
in my .xinitrc, it should be
exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
startxfce4 is a script wrapper for xfce4-session, which also sets some env variables...

Rare battery issue that "MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7" was supposed to address.

I recently downloaded this update that is supposed to "address a rare issue on some Apple notebooks where a battery that has accumulated more than 1000 charge cycles may unexpectedly shut down or stop functioning." This did nothing for my battery, which has been completely shot for the past six months. My MacBook Pro is essentially a desktop now because it constantly has to be plugged in. My battery only had between 200-300 cycles when it shutdown. Apple service would not replace the battery free of charge because I was off my warranty, even though I knew this was a factory defect. My question is now that Apple has acknowledged that some of the MacBook Pros had faulty batteries, will they replace them free of charge even if i'm off warranty? It seems ridiculous that I have to pay $200 plus to fix a problem that was their fault in the beginning by supplying faulty batteries.

Apple has fixed the battery problem by a SMC update, so the 1000 cycles problem is now fixed, and your problem is different.
During the first year of warranty, if your battery fails, you will get it repaired for free. However, if it fails when the warranty has expired, you will have to pay unless you have purchased AppleCare.
If it's a common problem with a lot of MacBooks Pro, Apple will start a replacement program, where they will repair all batteries affected for free. This is the only exception, so you will have to pay because your warranty expired

GRC RAR Simulate issue

Folks, I wonder if you can help...
We are running GRC 5.3 and I'm currently validating RAR. I have just tried to test the 'Simulate' functionality in User Level Risk Analysis but get a problem:
I am trying to test Action Level Simulation and therefore want to enter a transaction in the 'Value' field - (in order to include or exclude the transaction from the analysis), when I click on the selection icon at the side of the Value field to enter the search screen -I can then select the system I need to search, but then when I perform an unrestricted search ( to return all possible values of transactions). I get a total of 22000 values returned stopping at transactions beginning with M* - NOT the expected amount of some 90000 transactions in our system.
I have performed a download/upload of the Static text and SU24 Objects into the GRC system as part of the post installation steps and the text files produced show all the transactions objects in the system. Is there anything else I need to do in order to configure GRC to see all the transactions.

Here are responses to your queries:
1. When running a RAR incremental role report with 4 rulesets, we encounter a status error on some roles, why is the status showing error while others are complete?
-> When you run batch risk analysis system runs analysis on multiple roles/users/profiles. Whenever it encounters error for one of the object (role/user/profile), system goes on to next object in sequence and does not stop there. This way risk analysis does not stop if you error for a particular object and tries to complete as much as it can. Now the reason for error on some of the objects can be found later. Try to run risk analysis on that particular object only which failed and then try to troubleshoot the problem with it. check the logs after you run on that particular object.
2. And also, from 0 - 19% seems to be quite fast, but after that it is running very slow, and i see the CPU comp and Memory uti is very high, any idea what might be the cause?
-> The time taken to perform risk analysis on objects may vary depending upon the number of auth. objects available with the object. If A role has 30 objects and B role has 2000 then system will take different amonut time to run risk analysis on each one of them. risk analysis on A will complete faster than that of B. In addition to that, since you ar using 4 rulesets , system tries to analysis the objects for all the rulesets. This will increase the risk analysis time considerably.

SQUEEZE replaced XARCHIVER in XFCE4.4.0?

After my walk through KDEMOD, KDE and Gnome, I am about to come back to XFCE4.4.0 again , and doing a 'pacman -S xfce4' left me wondering about SQUEEZE, which seems to have replaced XARCHIVER.
Any comments on that?
Why would two differnt archive managers be actively developed for XFCE4?
Both are definitely XFCE4 projects, SQUEEZE is very new (just hit version v0.1.0), so how comes?
Strangely neither here in this forum, nor on the XFCE website is anything mentioned about this matter.

no archive manager was released with xfce 4.4, so there is no official xfce archiver atm. they discussed this on the xfce4-dev mailing list, if you want to read the discussion.
the point was, that xarchiver was not really stable in the current version and squeeze had not even had any release at all at that point.

true, they are xfce projects, but not both are xfce apps. xarchiver is and _will_ always be a gtk only archive manager, while squeeze targets xfce integration. both applications will stay with xfce and none of them will kick the other one out, so squeeze does not replace xarchiver.
squeeze was forked from xarchiver months ago but both will stay as they target different directions.
squeeze has some nasty issues but it may turn out nicely in time. i use it and i know its flaws, but for the general use i absolutely recommend xarchiver atm. it's way more mature than squeeze.
i hope this clears things up a bit. there simply is no official xfce archive manager at this time.

[Solved] thunar-archive-plugin won't install in Xfce 4.8.0

When I attempt to install the thunar archive integration package, this is the message I recieve despite having all the requirements installed.
NOTE for thunar-archive-plugin:

Is there anything I can do to remedy this?
I found a thread from back in January with the same issue. But, These are different package versions involved.

Yes. I've had Xfce4, Thunar, and Xarchiver installed since day one of the initial netinstall.
No, Force installing the package doesn't work.
EDIT;
I ran the following command.
pacman -Rnss thunar xarchiver
I then ran.
pacman -Scc
After reinstalling all of the above apps, I now have the 'extract here', and 'extract to...' options available.

SCA Performance Issues

Recent datacentre design uses both CSS Content Switches and SCA SSL accelerators. Services working fine, however SSL acceleration actually SLOWS DOWN during the day. Up to four minutes to load a SSL encrypted page in the afternoon as opposed to a morning check.
Cached sesion data is our best guess. Caching is turned on by default on the SCA boxes. Can't find any documentation on turning it off. Would like to try and run boxes with caching turned off, if only to discount as a possible cause of performance probems.
Need urgent help please, as datacentre is going live extremely soon. Any ideas, thoughts etc welcome.

I have a similar issue where if any recording takes place, or the microphone is even accessed by a program, I lose all audio until I restart my computer. What's similar is that after this occurs, the microphone and line-in inputs both get muted automatically. Previously, audio in certain games didn't work for me as a result of this, but with a bit of playing around sometimes I can get it working. However, eventually (usually after around half an hour), the sound will just cut out in-game entirely and require me to restart once again (only happens in games that use a microphone in some way; Fallout 3 is unaffected but Call of Duty: World at War is, for example. My Arch/Pekwm Setup (and you can have it too!)

Hello Everyone,
I've gotten a nice working lightweight setup going here with Arch and Pekwm (see screenshot:http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/9571 … enshot.png) and I felt like I should share the tools necessary for others to get a similar environment up and running quickly. The core of my "desktop" is Pekwm, LXPanel, Xcompmgr, and Nitrogen. I also have a set of common applications installed, choosing lighter alternatives based on my knowledge of what's light and what works.
This quick guide assumes a bit of knowledge and doesn't spell out every command, but should be plenty clear for intermediate Archers and likely many beginners. The guide will be based on a clean install, which assumes you already have Arch installed and are able to boot and login as root into the console. You should also make sure to run a pacman -Syu before beginning if you are working from a fresh install.
The majority of this will be a bunch of pacman commands to get everthing installed. I'm providing my confirguation files as a means of getting a system setup quickly. For more details of configuring certain components, I reccomend the Arch Wiki, which has very nice documentation on just about everything I'm suggesting for installation here.
Oh! and one more thing. I have NOT yet tested this exact guide on a fresh install, so it could likely contain typos, missing programs, etc. It is, however, derived from a text document that I use everytime I create a fresh install, so it should be pretty solid. There may also be some leftovers that are specific to my username, paths, etc. If you find these, please let me know and I'll update accordingly. I also plan on posting my openbox setup at somepoint, so any feedback here would be greatly appreciated.

Copy the provided slim.conf.save file to /etc/slim.conf
Copy the provided xinitrc file to ~/.xinitrc and make .xinitrc executable
## DESKTOP CONFIG ##
Copy the contents of the provided dot_pekwm folder to ~/.pekwm/
Copy the contents of the provided lxpanel folder to ~/.config/lxpanel/
Copy the provided NATURE-SouthwestSunset_1600x1200.jpg (from art.gnome.org) to wherever you keep your wallpaper and update the "nitrogen" line in ~/.pekwm/start to point to the correct path (currently, it's pointing to MY home directory). You can also comment out or modify the xcompmgr line to your likings. I just run it for transparency and no other effects.
For the Vanilla-DMZ mouse cursor to be the default (which is what I am using), create this file:

And populate with this:

Run lxappearance from the System menu and select MurrinaCandido (Human-Graphite also works well with this setup) for the GTK theme and GNOME for the icon theme. Again, this assumes you wish to copy my exact setup. Also, the theme I am running in Pekwm is Murrina334, which *should* be set by default if you use my config.
NOTE: The attached tarball also includes a folder called "Fonts". This came with one of the the Pekwm themes I downloaded, but I can't remember which one. So, just copy contents to /usr/share/fonts/ to be safe.
## ISSUES/CAVEATS WITH PACKAGES AND SUCH ##
1) If you want mangler (which is in my pekwm menu), you'll need to get that from the AUR.
2) If you want a version of Midori that doesn't crash when you click on the little history button in the address bar, you'll need to get the git version from the AUR.
3) For mounting of CD/DVD drives to work properly in thunar, you *may* need to modify /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf and add these lines:

IMac won't respond after being put to sleep/turned off.

I've been dealing with this problem for a few months now. If I put my hard disk to sleep or turn my computer off, it doesn't respond when I try to wake it back up or turn it back on. It will make a continuous clicking noise (no there's no disc caught in it the CD drive) and the only way for me to actually restart is to run the Archive and Install feature on the install disc. If I try to simply restart it, I get a blue screen with a folder-with-a-question-mark icon where the Apple icon should be during loading. I've had to skip putting the hard disk to sleep at all but I do just put the display asleep, and it wakes up fine after that.
I've noticed a lot of crashes with Safari and other things like games recently too. I'm usually able to just force quit the program and restart it though. I have a Logitech mouse and an Apple USB keyboard that I use with it and I've tried unplugging and replugging those, as well as trying other keyboards/mice with it to see if it's a rare hardware issue. The only thing I haven't checked yet is the RAM that my boyfriend installed for me a couple years ago.
Although, I've noticed the last couple times I've had to do that, I've had to wait to use the install disc. If I do it too soon after it's stopped responding then my hard drive doesn't show up on the selection menu and the Archive and Install option doesn't come up. I have to let it sit a little while before I can do it.
I'm not at home at the moment to see which exact model/generation it is, but I have the one with the flatpanel screen and built-in iSight. I bought it back in June 2006. I'm currently using Leopard on it (not sure which version though).
Could one of my boards be worn out? Or could the additional RAM be causing problems? Any advice or suggestions are welcome. I'd like try checking everything I can myself before having to take it in to an Apple store. Thanks!

If it was purchased new, you are better off posting in another iMac forum. This is for the G4 iMacs with the articulated display arm and the dome-shaped base. It's not your fault--the forum labeling is, at best, non-intuitive and confuses plenty of posters.
Look at "About this Mac" in your Apple menu and note the processor type. If it says "G5" then your forum is here:

Help required on 3508 and gigabit copper Please.

Im running a cisco WS-C3508G-XL-EN with software 12.0(5.4)WC(1) and 4 WS-G5482 1000Base-T GBICs connected to and 1 Intel Pro 1000-T (Driver version 2.84.284.0) network Card and 3 3Com 3c996-T Gigabit Copper Cards (Driver Version 1.29). All the PCs are running Windows 2000 pro or server.
The built in diag software that comes with the drivers reports that its connected at gigabit speed and there are no dropped or bad packets.
The ports are configured for auto negotiation, full duplex and asymmetric flow control.
But if I connect to the console port on the back of the 3508 it reports 2d23b: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface GigabitEthernet0/1, Changed state to up.
It then changes state to down, this happens for all connected ports.
As a result the throughput on the gigabit ports is less than on a 100 port.
Can anyone give me any idea what I can do to keep the ports up?

How to get online help when creat new filter files in EDS?

I want to creat some my own filter files in order to get Event report from network management station when some special situations appear.
I have run /opt/CSCOpx/bineds -filter,and the Named Filter window appears,I select new a file,later select "add Generic events",during this course I tried to get online help with Help Icon, but the messages:"could not run netscape to display help netscape:not found."appears.
But I have install the netscape in the directory /opt/netscape, why it can't be found?I want to know whether there is some conf file in some place that has named a path name for the netscape diffrent from /opt/netscape.Is ther any such files?Thanks very much!

How do I set up home sharing to display music from shared library by artist and album?

I am not sure if the fix that cuatro476804 suggested is the issue here. I have also been experiencing freezing issues with my Apple TV since the latest Apple TV/iTunes updates. Here is the bug report I just submitted to Apple:
Since the last update to Apple TV or the last updates to iTunes (not sure which is the culprit) Apple TV freezes when trying to play music streamed from iTunes on a Mac.
I have an iMac running iTunes [11.01 (12)] and a 3rd gen Apple TV running the latest OS release as of 12-20-2012. Since the last software update for iTunes and Apple TV, the Apple TV will freeze when playing a song after about 10 - 20 seconds. This happens whether I am using my computer directly or when using the "remote" app on my iPhone 5. I can restart my song again by pressing play, but the song will freeze again after another 10 - 20 seconds.
I can temporarily cure the bug by unplugging my Apple TV for 5 seconds to cold start the gizmo, and then both iTunes and Remote seem to be able to stream without any issues.
but when I try to play music the next day, the same freezing issue occurs again like clockwork.
I thought this was just a rare buggy issue, maybe even a WiFi or other communication problem, but I have been playing tunes on my Apple TV for a couple years streamed from my iMac with not problems. This only started happening after the last software update. Again, not sure if this is the Apple TV update, or the iTunes 10.01 (12) update causing this.
Daily rebooting of the Apple TV is not an acceptable solution. Were this a Microsoft product, sure, but Apple product... its just supposed to work :-)
I hope others will report the same issue so this gets repaired soon.

How to avoid uncompressing bitmapDatas multiple times

Not sure if this should go here (performance) or IOS section, since I mainly have this issue on iOS but I think its on all air players.
When a bitmap (for exemple a bitmap in a fla) is added, you can see with Adobe SCOUT (great tool btw!) that it is uncompressed when added. Allright.
The bad thing is, if it is removed from stage, even if you keep it in memory for reuse, it is very often re-uncompressed when redisplayed. I mean 'often' because it seems erratic. If it stay removed for just a second, most of the time it won't be uncompressed again, but after 3 or more seconds, most of the time it will be (some kind of garbage collector in the "video" memory ?)
Setting its quality to lossless in the fla helps the decompression goes a bit faster (30-40 % I would say), on the detriment of swf size, but does not solve the main question : how can I force an animation (made of bitmaps for example) to never be uncompressed again as long as I dont tell it to to be "disposed" from wherever this is stored ?
Having it permanently on screen hidden somewhere is just too much a performance killer to be considered a solution when you have many. CacheAsBitmapMatrix could be usefull for vector data on this issue (not sure), but drawing a bitmap seems a bit stupid if you do already have bitmaps.
It might not seem a big issue but in a game with effects etc. most of those will only show up once every 2 to 10 seconds, but if you loose 5ms/frame for 40 frames each time one does, and you have many, it really impact performance on devices like ios etc, whereas memory doesnt seem to be the problem here, it happens with low or high memory usage both.
If anyone knows a tip, thanks a lot!
EDIT : Tests made with gpu mode, flash builder 4.7, air 3.5, iPad3 (or other), release build.

In my experience, the second solution here: actionscript 3 - Bitmaps Being Cached As Bitmaps - Stack Overflow is the one that gave me best results thus far, even when loading a swf (as opposed to a bitmap) which contains bitmaps inside. To avoid this decompressing on the run (on demand) you can instead request flash to decompress it on load. This will increase the load time but improve the perceived performance of the app since a separate thread takes care of the decompressing. This of course means no jitter or skip when the image hits the screen:

Embedded images (via code) are not supposed to be compressed, so this problem shouldn't occur with applications that do so. However, if you are like me, and you use the Flash Pro IDE to import PNGs or other bitmap assets, Flash Pro compresses them as JPG by default, using the setting provided by the image itself.
To fix this and avoid these decompression issues, simply go to your Flash Pro asset library, right click on the image you want to change, click on properties and select "lossless / PNG/GIF" as compression. This will increase largely the load time but you will have the much better perceived performance discussed here. This should be done in addition to implementing the code above, or it will make no difference.
In my experience the frame rate average dropped only by one frame per second, but it's much more consistent without any skips or lags which is essential for games.
