Thunar won't show folder icons

Today, I've tried to install Thunar, but it won't show icons for my folders. I use HighContrast icons from gnome-themes-standard.
I've also tried to install pcmanfm, and it displays all icons properly. If I install gnome-icon-theme, then I can see all icons, but some of them (folders) are "ugly". Any ideas?

How long is long? I have been waiting about 11 hours now for Finder to calculate the size of single Time Machine backup folder. Yes, I did enable sharing & permissions for me as administrator, and the message "calculating size" has been appearing since 11 hours ago.

  • Folders won't show some icons when attached to dock

    Hello guys
I am experiencing a very annoying issue. Turns out that the folders, when put on dock, won't show the icons that are not mac-standard (like .mkv movies, .rar, etc.).
    Here's a screenshot:

Hope you guys know how to fix it.
    Thank you

I'm not sure if Exchange account settings are made available for transfer to an iPhone via the iTunes sync process.
Have you tried manually creating your Exchange account on your iPhone using the Exchange account preset?
If you plan on syncing contact info and calendar events over the air with your Exchange account on your iPhone, all existing contact info and calendar events on your iPhone will be erased and replaced with your online contact info and calendar events at the Exchange server.
With an Exchange account, you can sync contact info and calendar events direct with Outlook 2003 or 2004 via the iTunes sync process, or you can sync contact info and calendar events over the air. You can do one or the other, not both at the same time.

  • MacBook shows folder icon with Question mark on boot up still boots fine

Just this morning when I booted up my MacBook, I noticed the infamous folder icon with a question mark flashed up on the screen once, then the normal apple icon appeared and the computer booted normally. I ran Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, Hardware Check, etc. and found no errors.
First, I'd like to know if this is anything catastrophically wrong with my computer. Regardless if there is or isn't, secondly, I'd like to figure out how to stop this from happening.
    Thanks.

Apparently, the computer cannot find the HD to boot up AT FIRST. After that, it could suddenly find it. The worst thing that can happen is that you need to backup and reformat your HD.

  • IMac fails to boot after restart. Shows folder icon with ?

I have managead to boot up from start up disc previously.  I did a hardward scan and it stated my hardware was fine. It is my understanding the folder icon with the "?" means that the iMac can't find the OS. I thought maybe I had a corrupted spot on my HD where the OS is, and tried to re-install, and I wasn't allowed to re-install.  Do you think my HD is bad, or maybe I have a virus? I'm ashamed to admit that my anti-virus software had been expired for a bit.  I should also mention I am running OSX Tiger. I know, bad Apple geek, but it more than served my needs.  This is last ditched effort before I take it in for service.

    Highly unlikely it's a virus.
The question mark on startup can mean several things. One the hard drive is failing or failed or your Mac cannot locate a System Folder to boot from.
Try starting up while holding down the Option key. If there's a volume to boot from you'll see the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk to restart from.
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
and tried to re-install, and I wasn't allowed to re-install.
    Not a good sign.

  • OS 10.4 to G3 FireWire successful install then shows folder icon and halts

Seek your advice camrades. Googled for solution but found no clear answer.
I have iBook G3 500MHz (Dual USB) 256 MB RAM with faulty CD-ROM.
G3 had OS X crashed and totally unesponding. Safe boot, singleuser and other basic steps have not helped. I have 4 installation CD's of 10.4 but, I repeat, CD-ROM drive is not working.
When G3 book is started in FireWire 'Target Disk Mode' the connected G4 (I have one more ibook with 10.5 Leopard) book recognizes the faulty G3 disk and directory structure. So I saved as much data as possible and succesfully wiped the the faulty G3 HDD to have a clear install.
I decided to make a FireWire system install. Faulty G3 notebook was started in 'Target Disk Mode' and 'OS X install' was started on G4 with FireWire G3 hard disk as a destination. Installation reported success and source G4 was booted via FireWire in OS 10.4. Then I disconnected the FireWire cable and restarted both iBooks normally.
G4 booted in it's native 10.5 with no problems.
But G3 have not booted, stuck in 'folder/question icon'. What has gone wrong?

What size is the hard drive? If it's 10 or 15 or even maybe 20 GB (some that were custom-built had a 20 GB hard drive), that's the original drive.
Asking an iBook that originally came with Mac OS 9 as the default OS to run Mac OS X 10.4.11 is asking quite a lot from it. And you're using it with the minimum RAM requirement for Mac OS X 10.4, too.
I kept my 500 MHz iBook in OS 9 and when I wanted to step up, I bought an iBook G3 (Dual USB) 800 MHz with Mac OS X 10.3 installed.
I maximized the RAM on both of them with a 512 MB RAM module in the one user-accessible RAM slot. (Doing that could speed things up a bit for you, too, but I'm not sure it's worth the upgrade, what with the broken CD drive.)
When I wanted to step up to Mac OS X 10.4, I bought an iBook G4.
So you are asking quite a lot from that ancient little beastie. You are asking it to run an OS which is 5 years newer than it is. If it feels creaky, that's probably why.
A new hard drive wouldn't be all that expensive, but they're difficult to install.

  • IPod starts up, shows folder icon then stops

when i connect to itunes, the ipod shows "do not disconnect", but is not recognised by itunes and never gets beyond the "do not disconnect" symbol on the ipod. The remote device is shown on explorer drive mapping - but you cannot access the device.
when disconnected from the computed, i restart, get the apple symbol then the folder/excalm symbol and the ipod closes down. can hear the processor working, there is a bit of a click as it tries to do its job.
would like to wipe the drive and restart, but need the ipod to be recognised by itunes first. any advice?

You need to re-format the hard drive on the iPod. Not knowing which generation it is, I'll assume you're using USB. The procudure goes like this: first un-install both iTunes and any updater software you may have. Download the latest updater and run it first. Hopefully, the computer will recognize the iPod and you can proceed to re-format the iPod using the updater. Once that is done, disconnect the iPod. Now,install iTunes. Re-connect the iPod and iTunes will give the option of either synching automatically at that moment or not synching at all.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Some of the app icons are just a blank square with the name of the app. They still work. I've tried to resync but get same result.

What about completing removing these apps from the iPod Touch and redownloading them from the App Store?

  • MacBook won't start - shows flashing folder icon with question mark

When I attempted a Spotlight search, my MacBook froze. I shut it down, and when I start again I get the sound, the blue screen, and then a flashing folder icon with a question mark. I tried starting with Option pressed down; didn't work, and now I don't even get the flashing folder icon, just the blue screen. Any suggestions?

The flashing folder with question mark means the computer can't find a working OS on the computer. This may mean your hard drive has failed.
Try holding the Shift key while starting up the machine. This puts the machine into Safe Mode.
If you have your install discs, insert Install Disc 1 and start up the computer while holding down the C key. When the Installer has loaded, choose a language. From the Utilities menu, choose *Disk Utility*. Does your hard drive show up here? If so, click on its icon (the one with manufacturer name & capacity, NOT "Macintosh HD"), and then click on the *Repair Disk* button.
If booting in Safe mode doesn't help or you don't have your install discs, you need to bring the computer to an Apple store and have the folks there look. If Disk Utility doesn't list your hard drive, it has very likely failed and will need to be replaced. If your machine is out of warranty, you're better off replacing it yourself, as it's very easy to do.

  • Boot problem / Hard drive won't spin up  and folder icon shows

    Hi,
Last week my ipod started giving me this problem, which started by it just stopping in the middle of a song (possibly because of lack of battery power).
When the ipod tries to boot I see the apple icon and hear the disk try to spin up for about 2 seconds. Then it gives a click, spins down, and starts the process all over again for several times until finally showing the dreaded folder icon.
When this happened last week I tried to charge using the cradle, but it didn't help. When I plugged it into the wall socket, VOILA! it worked. I went on my merry way for a week of listening, assuming the problem was all caused by a weak battery. During this week the computer was not able to mount the ipod disk.
Until yesterday, when the battery ran out in the middle of playing. The same exact symptoms occur, but this time the wall socket doesn't help. I think there was a sudden drop in power because the battery was fairly charged and then I saw it at complete zero, and I have also seen the battery icon show for a split second when trying to reset. I have of course tried as many of the 5 R's as I could do, but with no luck.
any help would be greatly appreciated
    thanks,
    ubloomie

If you can open up the case, you can try reviving the hard drive one last time. some people have had luck with sealing the drive in a plastic bag (to keep out moisture) and putting it in the freezer, and then firing it up.
Also you could try giving it a good sharp shock, which sometimes gets you one more spin-up.

  • Camera icon won't show up on desktop.

    Transfer 911
Bought a digital picture frame for a present due today.
Want to do a simple transfer of pictures from my iphoto library to the digital card in my nikon camera and then shoot pictures at the party then put in the chip in the Digital photo frame.
I have dragged and dropped from the iphoto library before so I know this works.
I've plugged in both nikon cameras I have but the icon's won't show up on the destop for me to open the card.
Why won't it recognize the cameras of all days-I have to get this done?
    Thanks,
    Mr. McTev

I have a similar problem. Apparently Apple "fixed" the finder so that cameras only appear in iPhoto. This is great for ease of use but terrible for us in the nuts and bolts set.
As was mentioned earlier, go to Disk Utility and see if the camera appears there. If it does, then from the Finder choose "Go to Folder" from the Go menu. Enter "/Volumes" without the quote marks and press enter. This should open a window with the volumes that are connected to your Mac. One of the volumes should be your camera.
At this point you should be able to interact with the camera as if it were a regular disk drive.

  • Ipod shows folder with exclamation point and computer won't recognize

My ipod resets itself each time that I try to turn it on, and then flashes the folder with the exclamation point. I have tried to restore it and update software but the computer won't recognize it. A few days before it broke the ipod would skip through some songs that it was unable to play for some reason, and now it makes a clicking sound when trying to start up. Did it die, or is there a way to fix this?

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery replacement (with pictures)
    http://www.kokopellimusic.us/KM_instructions.htm
Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • [SOLVED]Incorrect thunar folder icons

Hello I've been using the Area Blue icon theme for a few days but after a reboot yesterday the folder icons are GNOME icons. All the other icons are unaffected. I've tried deleting and re-downloading the icons but the folder icons just won't work. Any ideas?
    Edit:
this is only happening in thunar all other programs and unaffected. PCmanFM works too
Last edited by TheCash (2012-07-21 04:47:15)

No I was saying that since I was setting up everything(themes, compositing, etc..) today I may have changed something that after the reboot caused the icons to "disappear".
Also it is only in thunar that the folder icons are missing.
I've tried searching around but I haven't seen anything so far, but I may have missed somthing
"Having the icon pack in /usr/share/icons (not "/usr/share/themes") makes it available system-wide, for other users as well."
Thank you that's what I meant.

  • My MacBook won't start up. Get folder icon with ? In it.  Ideas....    Thanks

My MacBook won't start up.  I get a folder icon with a "?" in it.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

The MacBook cannot find a startup disk...could be a corrupted hard drive or failed hard drive.  If you have the install disk for your Mac OS X, you show 10.5.8, try booting holding the C key so you startup on the installation disk.  If that works, use disk utility to see if you can do a repair of the internal hard drive and fix system files that are bad, or even do a reinstall so you cleanup bad files.
If that does not work, then a trip to the Apple store genius bar to have the hard drive checked out and possibly replaced.

  • How do i get folders to show thumbnail previews, instead of just a folder icon. Like how windows does thumbnail view.

I have a massive amount of folder with pictures inside each folder, is there a way for the folder icon to show whats inside, like how windows does it.

    Hi Tweedy -
No, you can't use the .NET code directly in DIAdem.  I'm not sure what the point in suggesting it was, as it would take significant modification to be able to use similar code in DIAdem.
Have you tried using the VIEW Legends?  Expand the legend for each graph and then double-click on the legend, at which point you can configure what information shows up about each curve.  By default, the legend will show the Curve Name, Curve Units, X-Position (of the cursor), and Y-Position (of the cursor).  Feel free to augment or contract this as needed for your preference.
After expanding each legend, switch to the Curve Cursor, and you should be able to see the Y-Position of each curve, completely synchronized.
