Thunar, xfce4 and polkit-gnome

I've spent 3 hours this morning trying to understand mount permissions in Thunar and, thus, how polkit controls user access.  I'm pleased to say it hasn't been a total waste of time because I have a much better understanding of what polkit does and why.
However, in my investigations I have seen countless forum threads by people trying to fix their Thunar mount problems.  The simple answer to almost all of these threads is "install polkit-gnome and restart".
Arch uses auth_admin_keep for internal mounting permissions - for that to work you MUST have a PolicyKit Authentication Agent installed (right?) - polkit-gnome is exactly that.  Without polkit-gnome there is no application to pop-up and ask you for your password, which is exactly what the auth_admin option wants to do.
So, how is it an optional depend for thunar?

.:edit:.
Whether automounting is or isn't an "optional" feature is largely irrelevant.
My main point is that policykit requires a User Authenication Agent to function correctly - gnome-session and kdelibs pull in polkit-gnome and polkit-kde respectively by default.  Why is XFCE different just because they don't ship their own User Authentication Agent?
anonymous_user wrote:It is optional because Thunar will still work without it. Mounting may not work, but file manager duties like moving and deleting files do work. At least that is my understanding of optional dependencies.
Yes, that was my understanding too... 5 years ago.
Udev and PolicyKit exist to make mounting disks, amongst other things, "as standard" across multiple environments, this functionality has been incorporated in Thunar.  Mounting in Thunar is as much a feature as moving and deleting files.
It's also worth mentioning that I didn't set out to make automounting work in Thunar - I just had these Drives appearing in my sidebar but when I clicked on them I got an error.
That's the definition of broken from a users perspective.

  • Confused about polkit-gnome and lxpolkit [solved]

    I recently updated and new version of goffice and gnumeric came down with this warning:
    ==> The agent is no longer autostarted by default except in GNOME Flashback.
    For Xfce, LXDE etc., "lxpolkit" is the suggested lightweight alternative.
    See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Polkit#Authentication_agents for
    more details.
    I use xfce4 and do not know gnome-polkit installed at all. I removed it and pacman did not complain about dependencies. What exactly do I need lxpolkit for? I am able to use sudo without it.

    I'am confused too:
    Using lxde I was not even aware that there is an alternative to polkit-gnome, as it is always
    mentioned as quasi dependend on gvfs:
    The gvfs package needs to be installed, along with polkit-gnome for the polkit rules.
    This seems to be wrong as neither gvfs nor the polkit rules do depend on polkit-gnome authentication-agent in any way.
    Informations through the wiki(s) are very inconsistent!
    From LXDE-Page:
    polkit-gnome provides an authentication and will need to be started on login:
    $ mkdir -p ~/.config/autostart
    $ cp /etc/xdg/autostart/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop ~/.config/autostart
    What is it good for? Is there any reason to start it twice? The file mentioned is installed at '/usr/share/applications/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop' by default.
    Polkit-Page:
    To autostart it everywhere except in GNOME and KDE, copy the file /usr/share/applications/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop to /etc/xdg/autostart/
    LXDE-Wiki:
    gvfs and its dependencies (optional, but highly recommended):
    policykit-gnome (required for authentication for volume management)
    And last but not least the awareness that the LX alternative exists since March 28th, 2010 where PCMan himself told us polkit-gnome is not needed anymore:
    LXPOLKIT – SIMPLE POLICYKIT AUTHENTICATION AGENT:
    Generally when one needs to use policykit, he or she needs to install policykit-gnome. Now we have our own.
    A new component LXPolkit was added. It’s minimal policykit  authentication agent.
    As far as I get it, polkit-gnome only provides the 'query of password window' and can be replaced by lxpolkit which is more lightweight.
    And as it was never 'auto'started (see above) except in GNOME, the pacman.log message is IMHO highly questionable and confusing.

  • Xfce4 and gnome-network-manager [solved]

    quoted from a previous thread
    I solved it by uncommenting my <locale><charset> in /etc/locale.gen.
    First you have to enable the locales you want being supported by your system. To enable or disable them, the file /etc/locale.gen is used. It contains every locale you can enable, and you have just to uncomment lines you want to do so.
    As we want to setup an english UTF-8 conform system, we want to enable en_US.UTF-8. But for compatibility to programs that don't support UTF-8 yet, it's recommended to support any other locale, prefixed with en_US as well. Having this in mind, we enable this set of locales:
    en_US.UTF8 UTF-8
    en_US ISO-8859-1
    After you've enabled the necessary locales, you have to run locale-gen as root to update them:
    # sudo locale-gen
    Generating locales...
    en_US.UTF-8... done
    en_US.ISO-8859-1... done
    Generation complete.

    The first code block contains my Xorg.0.log however I just tryed modprove nvidia and recieved FATAL: Module nvidia not found. which I discovered was solved by someone here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=961852 however when I tryed to do a pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils I get a unresolved confilict with nvidia-304xx-utils which after trying to remove with pacman -Rs shows dependencies with cario, Im not sure how far back I should start removing things to solve this conflict or how to go abouts solving it
    +++++++++
    Update: Solved
    +++++++++
    I did some more looking and found I could force the uninstall of nvidia-304xx-lts with pacman -Rdds nvidia-304xx-lts and after revisiting the Nvidia page on the wiki for the dozenth time I started thinking maybe I needed nvidia-304xx oposed to the lts release as google as kindly pointed out lts is long term support and maybe my kernel was not lts and thus conflicting.  This turned out to be the case, after removing the ofending lts version of the driver, replacing with the correct nvidia-304xx , another nvidia-xconfig and reboot followed by modprobe nvida and startxfce4 my wounderfull xfce is now running as I type this messsage in firefox.  Thank you for you help, as you asking about the modprobe output caused the chain of events leading to the success.

  • Trying to load and install gnome

    I have tried to load and install gnome for thge past three(3) days with no success. If this is what Arch linux is all about then its lost on me. Anybody want to change my mind?

    this is an example of how not to ask a question.. first. if you want to leave go ahead, no one is holding you back.. second obviously, trying to "load and install gnome for the past three(3) days with no success" is not what archlinux is about.. having said that..
    you need to install xorg
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg
    and the you need to install gnome
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gnome
    next you add a login screen or configure your .xinitrc
    i can only tell you this as you provide no useful information or say _specifically_ what your problem is

  • Xfce4 and Openbox

    Okay all,
    I tried searching, didn't have any luck, so here goes:
    I'm following along with the Wiki here to configure Xfce to run with Openbox.  The Wiki says:
    Log into a normal Xfce4 session. From your terminal, type:
    $ killall xfwm4 ; openbox & exit
    This kills xfwm4, runs Openbox, and closes the terminal. Log out, being sure to check the "Save session for future logins" box. On your next login, Xfce4 should use Openbox as its window manager.
    When I do this, Xfce flickers for a moment as the terminal closes and sends me back to the desktop, but nothing has changed.  I then proceed to log out, checking the box as instructed, and log back in.  However, Xfce does not use Openbox as the window manager when I do this.
    When I run:
    $ ps aux | grep -E '(openbox|xfwm4)'
    It returns:
    username 2210 1.5 0.2 137084 9204 tty1 S 02:12 0:00 xfwm4 --display :0.0 --sm-client-id ...
    I've tried this several times without luck.  I have ObConf installed already, and also installed Xfce4 (and was able to get it to load properly using startxfce4, naturally) as well as Openbox (the installation order went Xfce4, Openbox, ObConf in case it matters.)
    Any idea what the issue might be?
    If I run just
    $ killall xfwm4 ; openbox
    (ie, without the exit), I receive the message
    A window manager is already running on screen 0
    Last edited by Brukhar (2012-03-01 04:30:13)

    I have tried both of your above methods, here's the results:
    openbox --replace
    When I do this, it doesn't return control to me in the terminal, so I have to CTRL-C out of it, at which point Openbox isn't running anymore.
    So, I modified it to:
    openbox --replace &
    Now, when I do this, it starts Openbox (the window styling changes obviously), and returns:
    [1] 1687
    Then, running
    ps aux | grep -E '(openbox|xfwm4)'
    returns
    eric 1687 0.0 0.1 96800 7940 pts/0 S 20:09 0:00 openbox --replace
    which indicates Openbox is now running properly.
    So, then I proceed to logout using the menu option, and I check the box for "Save session for future use.".  Upon logout, I see the following warnings:
    // typical X.org startup information
    (xfce4-panel:1660): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE
    (xfce4-session:1653): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE
    Upon running
    startxfce4
    again, my desktop returns, however my cursor has turned to a black X, and the desktop icon for Home is now partially covered by the top toolbar.  Additionally, when I start a terminal, the top of the terminal is actually overlapping with the menu and part of it is off the screen to the top.
    Running
    ps aux | grep -E '(openbox|xfwm4)'
    reveals that neither xfwm4 nor openbox is running.
    So, then if I run
    openbox &
    I can then at least click the top menu bar and move the terminal back fully onto the screen.  If I click "X" for the terminal, it hides the terminal but it does not disappear from the application bar.  If I then logout, I see the following warnings:
    // typical X.org startup information
    xfdesktop[1661]: starting up
    xfce4-settings-helper: Another instance is already running. Leaving...
    (xfce4-settings-helper:1663): xfce4-settings-helper-WARNING **: Failed to get the _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS property.
    xfce4-panel: No window manager registered on screen 0. To start the panel without this check, run with --disable-wm-check.
    (xfce4-panel:1660): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE
    (xfce4-session:1653): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE
    When I run
    startxfce4
    again, it returns to the previous issue where my desktop shows but the cursor is a black X and the icons and toolbar overlap, and neither xfwm4 nor openbox is running.
    If, instead of running
    openbox &
    when I have no window manager, I instead run
    xfwm4
    it returns to normal (terminal closes properly, nothing is overlapping), and when I logout, I see the following warnings:
    // typical X.org startup information
    xfdesktop[1661]: starting up
    xfce4-settings-helper: Another instance is already running.
    When I next run
    startxfce4
    everything loads properly (read, it loads normally as it did before I replaced xfwm4 with Openbox, so there are no errors with overlapping icons and menu bars and the terminal actually closes), and there are no warning messages displayed on logout.
    So, what gives?

  • XFCE4 and Compiz in virtualbox on a mac

    Ok so i have a 2010 macbook pro with an Nvidia 9600 GPU a core 2 duo 2.6GHz and 4GB of ram and i am trying to run an Arch computer in Virtualbox using XFCE4 and Compiz to prove how flashy yet relatively light weight the combination can be.. i believe i installed Vbox guest additions on the machine but i can't change the resolution from 1024x768 and for whatever reason when i try to use compiz-fusion for compositing it seems not to give me any window decorations (yes its enabled and emerald is installed) and when it does i can't use them or move windows around.. XFCE works fine without it and on my ubuntu laptop with the same processor and amount of memory i got KDE4 with compiz running no problem.. any ideas? i could really use help, if you would like my configs i could post them if you'd like.

    This may not help because it doesn't relate directly to using a Vodafone Internet Key but I suppose its worth a shot. I had a network problem with my Arch on Mac via Virtualbox install. I could connect via wi-fi at home no problem but if I tried to connect anywhere else, like the library or at a cafe, it wouldn't work. I fixed this problem by switching the "Attached to:" setting under Virtualbox's network settings to Bridged Adapter. Maybe you could try messing with those settings and see if it fixes the problem.

  • Xfce4 and thunar mounting esata drive

    Just got a new esata drive and am finding that I have to create the custom udev rule described below in order for me to have the ability to mount partitions through thunar.  I am fine being challenged to type my root password when I go to mount partitions but I can't even get challenged with the root password.  I simple get a message telling me that I am not authorized to mount partitions on this drive without the rule.  My user is in the storage group.
    How can I exist without this rule and get challenged to mount via a password?
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GVFS
    polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
    if (action.id.indexOf("org.freedesktop.udisks2.") == 0){
    return polkit.Result.YES;

    you can set the UDISKS_FILESYSTEM_SHARED property on the device (or all block devices) via a udev rule. udisks2 will then mount the device to /media/*, like udisks1 did (see "man udisks").

  • Thunar, Tumbler and (un)mounting

    Hello everyone,
    I have the following problem, and I suspect it's a bug of some sort.
    If I insert a USB stick, memory card or any other sort of removable media, and I access a folder which contains images that can be thumbnailed by Tumbler, it will run tumblerd, which is its daemon, and won't stop even if I try to unmount. It will thus keep the drive busy (possibly for a very long time). I don't even want stuff on removable drives to have thumbnails.
    I can unmount by killing tumblerd, but that is hardly a user friendly solution. I suppose the logical thing would be for Thunar to do that itself. What do you think? Are there solutions? Can I disable thumbnailing for removable devices?
    Thanks,
    Nanthiel

    I searched for documentation for tumbler but couldn't find anything. It seems that there is no configuration available either, and the only option in Thunar is the boolean "MiscShowThumbnails". Maybe a quick hack would be to patch Thunar to call "system("pkill tumbler")" or something similar when unmount or eject are clicked...
    From the gnome doc about dbus thumbnailing:
    Cancel/Dequeue thumbnail requests
        <method name="Dequeue">
          <arg type="u" name="handle" direction="in" />
        </method>
    The Dequeue method removes thumbnail requests from the queue. A service implementation is only guaranteed to cancel requests that have not started processing yet when it receives the Dequeue request. A service implementation may cancel an in-progress request if possible, but clients should not depend on this behavior being available.
    ... which seems to indicate that there is no "good" way of stopping the thumbnailer...

  • Xfce4 and dual screen issues

    I have setup dual screen in xfce4, i have added
    xrandr --output VGA --left-of LVDS
    to xfce4 startup apps. But the issue is that both screen defaults to 1024x768 and if it change the resolution to the correct one my laptop screen turn black. This is some what the similar kind i issue i face in kdemod4 but gnome work ok with with the above command.

    What video card?
    What drivers?

  • [Solved] consolekit and polkit under systemd

    I was wondering if I still had vestiges of the sysv init left on my system since I have supposedly gone completely over to systemd.
    The consolekit wiki page strongly suggests that systemd is incompatible with it. If I do "systemctl list-unit-files --no-pager|grep -i console" I see
    console-kit-daemon.service disabled
    console-kit-log-system-restart.service static
    console-kit-log-system-start.service static
    console-kit-log-system-stop.service static
    console-shell.service disabled
    Yet when I do "systemctl --all --no-pager|grep -i console" for some reason I see
    console-kit-daemon.service loaded active running Console Manager
    console-...m-start.service loaded active exited Console System Startup Logg
    It strikes me as strange for a loaded, active, running service to be disabled. Anyway should consolekit be "uninstalled" and completely eliminated?
    Polkit causes somewhat similar questions although it is less obvious from the wiki that it is incompatible with systemd.
    Journalctl does show systemd starting up polkit and consolekit, but it also shows several messages, "console-kit-daemon[553]: missing action", and for polkitd it shows both a "Registered Authentication Agent" and later a "Unregistered Authentication Agent" - for several different buses, apparently. Not sure if that is normal.
    Just wondering how all this fits together, and if some of it should be gone now that systemd is here.
    Last edited by PaulBx1 (2013-01-21 19:35:10)

    I wonder if there are any more things like that? I was a little surprised there were no warnings on the systemd conversion to get rid of consolekit, or that the compatibility package didn't take care of it. Maybe there were warnings and I just missed them.
    I also wonder about the "ck-launch-session" at the end of my .xinitrc file. The consolekit wiki article says,
    An easy method to be able to remove ConsoleKit is to automatically log in to a virtual console and start X from there. It is important that, as mentioned in the latter article, the X server is started on the same virtual console that you log in to, otherwise logind can not keep track of the user session. You can then simply remove ck-launch-session from your ~/.xinitrc.
    I don't quite understand that. Just delete the line? Or does something else (having to do with systemd) go in there? And why the virtual console bit? Why not just go to single user and handle it there?
    Here is my .xinitrc:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde

  • [SOLVED] Thunar (XFCE4) Does not Auto-mount USB Drive

    After reading some posts related to USB auto-mounting in Thunar and yet still having the problem, I decided to post this. Thunar used to detect the USB drives and auto-mount them. These days (I GUESS after moving to systemd), It cannot do so. Still, there is the icon of USB drive on the left side panel, but when I click on it to browse it, I get this error:
    Failed to mount "USB_LABLE".
    Error when getting information for file
    '/media/usbhd-sdc1': Transport endpoint is not connected.
    I am still able to use "sudo mount..." and get the job done, but I would prefer the convenient way it used to work. Here are some information about my system:
    command> cat ~/.xinitrc
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do

    The error looks suspiciously like one I had not so long ago and it turned out I still had an 11-media-by-label-auto-mount.rule in /etc/udev/rules.d.  Once I removed that and rebooted everything was fine again.

  • Installed arch linux on windows 8 laptop and with GNOME

    Hi all,
    I am trying to learn more about linux and decided to go the Arch Linux way. I've battled through a bunch of issues before I got to this point so I might have fudged something along the way.
    The current issue is that I install GNOME, and it boots up into GNOME, and I select my username and type my password, and then I see black screen with blinking cursor for 10 seconds after which I am returned to GNOME login screen. It doesn't do a system reboot before going back to the login screen.
    The only way to stop this is to put in my livecd arch-linux usb drive and then delete GNOME, after which arch linux will boot back into terminal. (I wish I knew how to do this without using the usb drive)
    What should I look at for hints? I don't see any output when this loop happens.
    Thanks!

    Ok that works and I can log in. However I don't see any familiar drives mounted. Anyway, I have the output from journalctl. Here it is
    Mar 07 18:34:57 localhost systemd[1]: Started User Manager for UID 120.

    I only posted a piece of it.
    By the way, I got this file by using startX (becuase otherwise i didnt have permissions), used > to output it to a file, mounted a usb flash drive, copied it to flash drive, used a windows computer to copy the file to my ubuntu laptop (because the folder wouldn't show up in the ubuntu computer) and then posted it here. There has to be a better way to post a debug manage on here.

  • User session stops completely and restarts (GNOME 3.10)

    Since last week I have experienced suddenly closing all applications closing and sending me to the log-in screen.
    Using journalctl I can see that all applications exited with a "Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0". It all ends with the user session stopping and then being started again.
    Here is a journald log from yesterday at 13:10.

    From what I remember I have also had this issue when Skype wasn't open.
    Yesterday my computer started up beeping - I took the harddisk out and it started normally (initramfs tho). Then I put it back in and the laptop have been running fine so far. I suspect it might just have been a bad connection, but I am giving it time..
    EDIT: Still experiencing the issue..

  • Nautilus bookmarks - drag and drop - gnome 3

    Hi
    in gnome 2 nautilus I could add folder from right pane to the left as a shortcut (or what was the name for that). In gnome 3 all my shortcuts are there, now called bookmarks. Only thing is that now I can't drag and drop files from right pane to these folder shorcuts in left pane.
    Is that a feature of gnome 3 nautilus or something is wrong with my nautilus?

    I'm able to drag folders over, but not files. I don't think I ever could with files, but I'm not sure I ever tried. CTRL+D will also add the current folder to the "bookmark," menu.
