Thunderbird constantly not responding and restarting

I use Chrome and Avast on my work computer. Thunderbird constantly freezes, then I get a "Not Responding" status, then it restarts and everything is fine. Until 3 emails later/I try to move a message into a folder/I click on another folder/etc/etc, then it starts all over again.
Help!

Hello,
This seems like a conflict with other system software or an installation problem.
To diagnose such conflict problems with Thunderbird, you can try one of the following:
*Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
*Restart the operating system in '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode safe mode with Networking]'''. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Windows 8], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-vista Windows Vista], [http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true" Windows XP], [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 OSX]
; If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
If the above doesn't help you can perform a ''Clean Reinstall''. This means you remove Thunderbird's Program Files then reinstall Thunderbird. Please follow these steps:
#[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb?esab=a&s=TB+profile&r=0&as=s#w_backing-up-a-profile Backup your current Thunderbird profile]
#Download the latest version of Thunderbird from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download is complete, close all Thunderbird windows (Click Exit/Quit from the menu button on the right).
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Thunderbird:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to open Thunderbird after clicking the Finish button.
#At this point you can [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb?esab=a&s=TB+profile&r=0&as=s#w_restoring-a-profile-backup restore your backup] or setup Thunderbird accordingly
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Thunderbird's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Thunderbird data, including but not limited to, extensions, emails, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to see if this helped you!
Thank you.

  • Upgraded Thunderbird/Lightning to latest - Thunderbird does not respond and appears to hang.

I believe this has to do with the calendar that is currently enabled in Thunderbird using Lightning.
Unfortunately, uninstalling/reinstalling lightning, Thunderbird simply hangs when it restards and is "Not responding". Disabling all Add-ons enables you to check email. Is there a way to disable the current calendar, reinstall Lightning and set-up a new calendar? I suspect the current calendar is google based.

    Hey Tony,
It appears it was the Airport settings and the router. Here is what I did.
I opened the ports you listed on the Linksys router using port range forwarding. I did not add the jabber ports because I'm not using Jabber and Linksys apparently allows only 10 ports (or port ranges) to be forwarded. One of them is forwarded to my apache server which I did not want to change.
I forwarded the ports to 198.168.1.1
The Apache server is forwarded to 198.168.100
I unticked the iChat I added in the sharing/firewall. The original iChat/Bonjour setting is still ticked on.
I finally found the UPnP setting on the Linksys router under Administration/Management and enabled it. What I had enabled (and then disabled) earlier was the UPnP forwarding under Applications&Gaming/UPnP Forwarding.
While looking at the Linksys settings under "setup" I saw that the the local DHCP server is set to start addresses at 198.168.1.100 So I tried setting the ports to forward to that address instead of 198.168.1.1 No luck. So I set them back to 198.168.1.1
Finally I went into Airport and turned off the port forwarding as suggested by Ralph's note that you attached. That solved things.
So I'm not sure if it was the last thing I did or a combination of all. Thank you for your help.

  • Shockwave Flash is CONSTANTLY not responding and crashing

    Hello there,
I've had this problem for a long time, and I've done most everything suggested in other forums regarding this matter. I've disabled "disabled protected mode, disabled hardware acceleration, made sure everything is updated, and nothing works. Unfortunately, this makes Firefox so unusable that I've had to switch to another browser for the time being, but it's having it's own issues. Very frustrating! I like Firefox and would like to have it working, but this "shockwave flash plugin" problem has been a persistent problem for the last year.
I've seen many other users who have not been able to fix the problem via the above suggestions, so--what's the verdict? Is there something else I can try?
    Cheers

Hi gforcewarp9, as you can see, the first one of those is easily clickable to access the report, but the others may require an extra step on your part: can you click them on the about:crashes screen and then copy/paste the URLs of those report pages into a reply? If they are all basically the identical report (startup crash with the "hang | ntdll.dll@0x3aaac" signature) then I'm not sure it would provide much more information to post those links.
The crash report seems to show Hola Unblocker running. Last year, a user discovered that extension can cause problems with Flash. Have you tried disabling it? One way would be to test the same pages in Firefox's Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset).
    Any difference?

  • Thunderbird not responding, and I need to know how to find out what version of Thunderbird I have?

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, use Firefox, but not sure how to tell what version. I have Zone Alarm anti-virus / firewall, iolo System Mechanic, and run them both regularly. I also have a g-mail account, a folder labeled "Gmail" in Thunderbird, and basically, 100% of my Gmail messages come to my Thunderbird inbox. After Thunderbird is opened, the green "loading" circle is seen rotating, @ bottom lower left says "Downloading message", @ bottom lower right, the "progress bar" BARELY shows any green, and Thunderbird takes FOREVER to load. If I try to click on an e-mail, (most times I don't even have to do that), my screen turns a milky opaque white, and at top of page says "Thunderbird"(not responding). Usually, I have to just leave the laptop, and return in 30 minutes or so to start opening my e-mails. Sometimes, it is ready for me to begin reading e-mail, and other times, it is STILL not responding, and I must continue to wait. Using cntrl / alt /del...task manager, scroll to Thunderbird, and click "end process" does no good; restarting, OR shut down / restart also does no good.

Typing '''Thunderbird Compact Folders''' into Google search will get you here.

  • My iPad screen is blue and blank. It will not respond to restarting

My iPad screen is blue and blank. It will not respond to restarting. The apple logo does not appear. The screen switches from a dark blue (as if it's on) to black (as if it's off). But will not reset and will not turn off. Any advice?

    Because you forgot the passcode?
You have to restore the device using iTunes. You want to use the same computer that you always sync with so that you can restore your app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the iPad.
    Instructions can be found here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212
You may need to restore using Recovery Mode. You can read about it here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4097
    Recovery Mode Instructions
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPad, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for iPad to turn off.
If you cannot turn off iPad using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the iPad turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to iPad. When you reconnect the USB cable, iPad should power on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the recovery mode alert that iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode.
    Use iTunes to restore iPad.
But ...if you are saying that the slide to unlock bar is not working and this has nothing to do with the iPad being disabled .... Reboot your iPad.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Safari is constantly not responding

Safari is constantly not responding, especially when loading java, uploading videos etc. Can I do anything about it? Can I somehow restore the safari (I have tried to rest it, but nothing was improved). thanks

You need to update to 10.5.8 to allow Safari to work at its best.
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • Spinning circle * Thunderbird is not responding when I try to write or access emails. I had attempted to delete a bunch of old txt messages in seldom used Gmail

I saw I had almost 30,000 txt messages on a Gmail account that I had created a gmail account for on Thunderbird. I didn't realize that they were going here from Gmail. I highlighted all of them and attempted to delete them. The spinning circle finally went away and all of them were gone. But when I tried to do anything else on Thunderbird with my regular email accounts (Comcast & Hotmail), I would get a spinning circle and Thunderbird is not responding. I had to use Ctrl Alt Del and then reopen. I tried compacting but this morning when I tried to write an email from one of my Comcast emails in Thunderbird, again I got the spinning circle and Thunderbird is not responding. In order to do anything, I have to close the program by hitting Crrl Alt Del and try again.
My Trash Local folders says 8300.
This morning, when I tried accessing Thunderbird at the bottom of the taskbar it said, "downloading....of 17,000 to All Mail. Had no clue what that meant. I let it continue until all were and thought my issue would be resolved. But no. :(
Something obviously got corrupted in the program. What do I need to do to fix this?
    Thank you.

When I try to go the Gmail address. it has the spinning circle and says, "opening folder and at the top Thunderbird is Not Responding"

  • For several weeks, Thunderbird downloads the same emails more than once, back to back. Also when I try to delete messages, "Thunderbird does not respond."

The entire screen whites out when I try to delete or open another email. The margin above the File button shows that "Thunderbird is not responding." Finally, a new window appears in the middle of the screen asking me if I want to close Thunderbird. I am not sure if this problem started when I renewed my McAfee Total Protection program approx. 2 months ago. I also have over 1000 messages saved in both received emails and sent emails. I would like to just highlight a full page of them and delete all messages at once, but this is not possible.
    Thank you for your time.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Updated to 5.0 is -now- constantly "not responding"

updated to 5.0 >MOZILLA > help/about Firefox says "up to date"> now MOZILLA is "not responding and "freezes/screen goes gray" every 4 clicks or so... it's gotten so bad I have to restart compute just get it to act at all. Firewall not an issue- MOZILLA is an allowed "trusted" site- it always worked before update... any suggestions?

Apparently phone is synced over icloud.
So, since we both share the same account and both sync over icloud, I guess our contacts were synced.
I guess we are the only two people in the world who have two iphones on one account.
I did not see a way to separate contacts.
    Thanks for trying.
I guess we have to get separate itunes accounts and delete contacts manually.
While I'm here, glad to learn that all my apps are deleted on sync unless I check the box to NOT DELETE APPS ON SYNC.
Since the box is unchecked, I guess most people prefer to NOT sync their apps so by default people loose all their apps upon sync.

  • Constantly 'not responding'. Why? Cache cleared, history cleared, this happens all the time!

My Mozilla Firefox is constantly 'not responding'. I have cleared the cache, cleared all history, run disk cleaner, run defrag, yet it continues to be a problem. It also 'can't find' many common sites like yahoomail. What is wrong? It shows as being completely updated.

    Hi,
Is the circle on the tab green and rotating clockwise or grey and anti clockwise when 'not responding'?

Spent about 4 hours yesterday trying to figure out why bookmarks is behaving so poorly with such a slow response. The response time is directly related to the number of bookmarks in each folder. It takes 8 seconds to process a bookmark. The 8 seconds occur between an sqlite shm unlock and the next sqlite lock.
At the start, the first and 3rd systems were behaving OK, the 2nd system was responding poorly. Did all the usual basic, restarted FF, rebooted system, etc.
THEEEENNNNN--the 3rd system started acting up. Tried tracing, etc. -- didn't see anything specific. Messed around with systems 2 and 3 and ,THEEENNNN, the both started working OK!
'''And about a minute later, the first system crapped out! '''
Screwed around another 1/2 hour and THEEEENNNN, all 3 systems started working OK. Cannot recreate the problem and I don't have a clue as to what I did to correct the problem!
All 3 systems are on the same internal network--192.168...... This leads me to believe that there is some kind of cross communications between systems. I do have Sync turned off, so I don't think that's the problem. But what.....????
