Thunderbird installed but folder keeps popping up.

Hi All,
I'm new to the whole iMac and OS X scene so I was wondering if anyone can help me figure out how to remove a folder that keeps popping up when I open Thunderbird.
When I downloaded and installed Thunderbird a folder opened with an icon for TB and a screen showing it being dragged into to the apps folder so I did.
Then I dragged the icon from the apps folder to the dock but now each time I click on the icon in the dock the folder with the image of the TB icon being dragged to the apps folder also opens.
The image also mounts and stays on the desktop until I eject it. I installed Firefox the same way yet I don't have any issues or problems with it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Roger
iMac Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hi Templeton,
The original file I downloaded I thought was a compressed or zipped file I'll delete it and see what happens and let you know.
Thanks, Roger
PS How do I include an image in my post to show you what keeps popping up????
