Thunderbird will not open

Today, I tried to open Thunderbird to get my mail and nothing happens when you click on the icon. I have Windows 7 and have tried opening it from the desktop, start menu, and the taskbar at the bottom of the page.

I have tried reinstalling it twice and there is no change. When you click on the icon, the cursor spins in a circle for a few seconds and stops.

  • Thunderbird will not open, even in safe mode

Recently Thunderbird refused to open on my Windows 7 64 bit pc. I have turned off all antivirus/malware programs, uninstalled with Revo uninstaller and reinstalled Thunderbird, tried to start it in safe mode. I have had task manager open while starting Thunderbird and it does not even appear in the window.
I am close to migrating to Opera. Please help me fix this problem.

AS you have Windows 7 64 bit pc, Thunderbird should have installed in this directory:
    * C:\Program Files(x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe
Check the shortcut on desktop is pointing to correct directory:
Right click on Thunderbird shortcut icon and select Properties.
    General tab
    Under 'Attributes'
Read only and hidden must NOT be selected.
    click on 'Shortcut' tab
make sure the 'Target' is this:
    "C:\Program Files(x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe"
    click on 'Security' tab
make sure your UserAccount name has permission to run TB
    click on OK
Make hidden files and folders visible:
The AppData folder is folder is a hidden folder; to show hidden folders, open a Windows Explorer window and choose "Organize → Folder and Search Options → Folder Options → View (tab) → Show hidden files and folders".
Create a folder on desktop called 'TB Backup'
Then create a backup of your Profile name folder.
    Locate this directory:
    C:\Users\Windows user name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\Profile name\
Right click on the profile name - (usually xxxxxxxx.default where the x's are letters and numbers) - select Copy and then Paste this into the Folder called 'TB Backup'.
If you have more than one Profile which you use - copy paste that as well.
Then look for and delete all the contents from these two directories:
    * C:\Users\Windows user name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\
    * C:\Users\Windows user name\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\
Then click on thunderbird shortcut icon to run Thunderbird.
    If this fails:
right click on Thunderbird icon and select 'Run as administrator'
Thunderbird should create a new default Profile.
It will then ask if you want to create mail accounts - do not create mail accounts - exit Thunderbird - it must be closed - this is important..
Locate your saved Profile in the TB Backup folder.
Open the profile name folder and copy all the contents.
    Locate the new Profile here:
    C:\Users\Windows user name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\profile folder name
Paste the copied contents into the profile folder name overwriting all the default files.
As an aid you should be copying the Contents of Profile folder name - see image below as an aid.
    then try to restart Thunderbird.
    Please report back on results.

  • Mozilla thunderbird will not open or sync profile on NAS device

Was running two computers with thunderbird both sync to the same profile stored on a NAS device. NAS device lost a drive but profile remained in tact. Now TB will not load the profile but when asked where the profile is located TB shows correct location and profile. Have tried reinstalling TB, restarting computer, restarting NAS device, have checked the profiles.ini file to make sure it is correct. All give the same effect, TB asks me to create new profile like I just installed the software. Any ideas??

how do you know it is not loading the profile? My guess is it is and your missing something you expect and assume it is not.

  • Firefox or Thunderbird will not open with firewall enabled,(eset Smart Security)

After the most recent update to Firefox, it now won't open until I disable my firewall. Once it is open I can enable the firewall again and all is good. The same thing happened to Thunderbird about two weeks previous. When I try to open either one when the firewall is on nothing happens, yet the process shows it's running in Task Manager. I have to end the process..disable firewall.. start Firefox and Thunderbird..then turn on firewall.

After reading several posts in the Support Forum I tried a solution. I deleted the "sessionstore-backups" folder.
Please try this: click the menu button ≡ and then click help ? > troubleshooting information > profile folder - "show folder". Then a new window will open up. In this window look out for a folder named "sessionstore-backups", delete this folder and restart firefox afterwards.
    The problem was resolved.

Thunderbird will not send or receive email in Windows 8.1 unless I re-install it. The next time I open Thunderbird it is again broken. So, I have to repeat the un-install / re-install process. Currently I am using Version 31.0, but this was happening the the previous version as well.

That really sounds like anti virus scanning to me. Try rebooting your machine into safe mode with networking and see if it works correctly then.

  • Firefox 4 will not open thunderbird for mailto and Send links

I am using Windows 7 business.
Since update FF4 will not open Thunderbird when a mailto link or send link is clicked. My system has Thunderbird selected as the default mail client and these links work in other browsers.
Following some online help suggestions about selecting Firefox's default mail client:
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Changing%20the%20e-mail%20program%20used%20by%20Firefox?s=mailto&as=s
There are no options for 'mailto' or 'mail' in the content type window.

I've suffered with this for weeks and finally worked around it.
Thunderbird was set as the default client, but it didn't work with some other clients as well, so I went to Default Programs / Set Default Programs, selected Thunderbird, which was already set as the default mail client, selected 'Choose defaults for this program' and hit Save. That fixed it for PDF Complete, but not for FF4.
In FF4, I changed the mailto option to Always Ask (it had been Thunderbird(default)), then chose Thunderbird as the client after picking Send Link. that worked, so the next time I checked the box in the dialog to always use Thunderbird and now it works. grrr.

  • Thunderbird 31.3 - Will Not Open Links in an Email in Firefox

Once again, I have an issue with Thunderbird and I cannot find an answer that works although I have tried the various suggestions in several posts. I have Firefox as my default browser (version 34.0.5) yet when I click a link in an email, it will not open up. What gives? Can someone please find me a solution that works so I don't have to go back to Outlook? Thank you!
    God bless,
    Vic

If it is none of those things in the article
Your issue may be an add-on. Restarting with add-ons disabled in the help menu will clear that up.
It might be your anti virus. Restarting your computer in safe mode will clear that up.

  • After upgrading thunderbird worked somewhat and now will not open.

Thunderbird was acting weird so I upgraded to whatever came up after clicking update. It worked a few times and now will not open. Clicking it produces the timer spiral for a second or two and then it stops not opening program, would like to know how to fix or at the least be able to retrieve emails and dictionary. running win 7
    Thanks,
    David

  • When I get attachments in my email, they will not open when I click on them.

When I am on the internet, videos, click-ons all open immediately. I had to go to the internet to get to your site, because when I clicked on the "Help" at the bottom of my Thunderbird account, it would not open.
In a nutshell, if I get an email from a group that says "click here for more info" or if I click the
"play arrow "on the u tube video etc. It will not open and/or play. This is only happening in my email account.

Thunderbird does not play video. You need to correct software to open the file types you are being sent.

  • Firefox will not open in browser but will on iPad

I have a good signal to the router and iPad works well. The PC will not open any browser (Firefox, explorer internet), and Thunderbird opens but will not connect and times out.
So I cannot reinstall Firefox or Thunderbird. I can get messages on my iPad but not the PC.
I have scanned the PC and have no virus or malware.
Any ideas of what to do next please?

You weren't very clear about what you are trying to do, but there is no Firefox for iOS devices - iPad and the iPhone.
You can download Firefox for PC's and MacOSX computers / laptops here:

  • Firefox 7 will not open, only shows up in processes, after Oct's Windows 7 update and force restart.

Been unable to get FF to open out side of it showing up in the processes. No browser window to even tinker with settings. Uninstalled the latest Windows updates, restarted and still won't open. Then uninstalled recent flash update since that updated as well. Still no go. Uninstalled FF, reboot, re-install FF, reboot, still nothing. I have tried opening in safe mode and FF will not open in safe mode either. Same again after turing off firewall and virus protection. Ran virus and spyware programs, nothing came up in those. Ran them again while in safe mode, just in case, and nothing found on my system.
The Windows and Adobe updates are the only things that have changed on my system since last restart 2 days ago.
No window, no nothing, only FF in the processes takin up 50% of my CPU and usin 30,000k in memory.
What else can I try to get my FF back?

I have the same problem (and with Mozilla Thunderbird) running with Windows Vista OS. The non-opening problem was preceded by a long period where Firefox and other programs were taking absurdly long times, such as one minute, to open. Starting Windows in "safe mode with networking" solves the problems. Similarly, I just found that If I run msconfig.exe and select "diagnostic startup" then Firefox and Thunderbird both start and start up really fast (that is, when most services and startup programs are prevented from starting). However there is no network so they do not connect. I then turned on (in msconfig) enough processes to get networking running and Firefox and Thunderbird still start up really fast.
I am fairly certain there are no viruses on my computer, so the only other possibility is that some program/registry-entry is preventing the OS from working properly. The problem with windows that it is virtually impossible to find something like this, since the Windows OS has very weak self-diagnostics, and the registry is absurdly complicated with over half a million entries on my computer.
If you can do a "repair install" then this will probably fix the problem, but I do not think that Vista has this feature. Alternatively an upgrade of the OS might fix it, such as from Vista to Windows 7.

  • My sent mail will not open anymore

I have removed a lot of sent messages(8000>3000) and my sent folder will not open anymore.
For a couple of times I opened my Thunderbird but no respons.
The cursor is still turning cirkels.
    What can you suggest?
    Thanx in advance

If it is an IMAP account you might have to wait for an update/synchronization of your actions on the server.
