Thunderbolt 2 Data Specs

I run a studio where when Daisy Chained Thunderbolt 2 on my MacBook Pro, I do have to worry about bandwidth and bottlenecking of my data. For this, I do not want to chain displays to my TB ports, and would rather use the HDMI. Issue is, is I need to use 2 displays in extended desktop mode, and I do not think 1 HDMI port supports that (does it?)
So curious, I was told that actually I have nothing to worry about, cause out of the 20Gb/s specs TB advertises, that really its 15Gb/s for any type of data and 5Gb/s is 100% dedicated to Video. Meaning if you are not using video at all, then no matter what 15Gb/s is the max bandwidth for all your data.
If this is true, then I guess daisy chaining 2 displays on the TB port wont hurt too much due to I couldn't use that 5Gb/s anyway for my data, and might as well use it for video.
Or is this not true ?
Any input is appreciated, thanks !

Thank you for your comments. Perhaps I'm just thick headed, but I don't see an answer in your response.
Here is the scenario. I plan to be an early adopter of the new Power Mac when it becomes available. however, I currently have about 6 TB of internal data stored in my againg Power Mac. So, I'll have to buy an external drive system of some sort. Take Drobo for example, they make Thunderbolt drives. It is not likely that there will be many Thunderbolt 2 devices ready when the new Power Mac is ready.
Speaking with the Drobo guys, they said that if the Tbolt 2 interface could be a firmware upgrade of the Tbolt 1 chips, then I'd not have to purchase a new machine to get Tbolt 2 speed. If on the other hand different chips or chip sets were required, then I'd have to wait until they started to  make Tbolt 2 machines.
I'd rather not buy both, one for immediate use, and one when the new machines are available.
So restating the question, does anybody know if the Tbolt 2 interface will be a firmware upgrade of Tbolt 1, or if new boxes are required?

  • Thunderbolt data service down

Spoke with tech support who confirmed that data service is down for some (but not all Thunderbolts).  My wife's tbolt has been out since midnight.  Rep stated no ETA, but there are issues network wide.
Anyone else experiencing a problem with their tbolt?  My droid incredible is working fine.

I can see her statement making sens for 4G(LTE) service. But not 3G as it uses the same 3G towers and antennas as the rest of us,  when not hitting an LTE tower. Makes me think a phone setting is incorrect. Maybe set to 4G service only. Go into SETTINGS>NETWORKS & WIRELESS and make sure Mobile Network is checkmarked.
Personally I would call tech support from another phone. Or do a master reset, if you have not added too much to the device.
BUt doesn't the thunderbolt require the SIM card even for 3G?   So, if something was wrong with the SIM authentication system, this would make sense, service out for Thunderbolts but not for other phones.
I dont think so. But I could very well be wrong. I believe the SIM is strictly for 4G. Even if that was the reason, wouldn't ALL TB's be DOA?
No, 3G needs the SIM as well, check out, for example, this thread: http://community.vzw.com/t5/ThunderBolt-by-HTC/Htc-Thunderbolt-Sim-Card/td-p/447368
Since I am making up the explanation...  it could be that "part" of a SIM authentication is down (e.g. some fraction of a distributed database) while the rest works.  But, this is based on absolutely no knowledge of the real situation, just giving a possible explanation of how thunderbolts could be impacted while 3G phones are ok.

  • Thunderbolt port faulty

I have a 2011 MacBook Air (11.6-inch/128 GB/4 GB RAM/OS 10.7.4) which has a fault with its Thunderbolt connection. It works OK with mini displayport connectors, but not as a data connection. Also, target disk mode is no longer available as a start-up option in system preferences.
It has been like this for about 5 months, I used to be able to transfer files from my 2011 MacBook Pro via target disk mode, but now the Thunderbolt data connection on the AIr is not recognised. The Thunderbolt cable itself is OK, I have used it to connect my MacBook Pro with another person's MacBook Pro.
Does this mean there is something wrong with the motherboard? Have any other users experienced similar problems?

If you're still within your 1 year warranty, or you have AppleCare, recommend that you take it into an Apple store and have a genius look at it.  Take your MBP with you so you can demonstrate what it's not doing.

  • What are the actual dimensions of the new Thunderbolt Display without the stand (e.g., when using a VESA mount)?

I need to use the new Thunderbolt Display without the stand on a VESA mount, but before I order it I need to make sure it will fit height-wise in the allotted space.

The ThunderBolt display specs page has the same sizes listed as the 27" LED Cinema Display specs page (web archive).  I just measured my Cinema Display for you and the height of the display itself without the stand is 15 5/8".  However, you will need some additional space at the bottom for air flow intake.  These displays get hot and need proper ventilation so do not block the vents on the bottom.  Also the bottom vents are where the speakers are.
    Hope this helps.

  • Add field to E-Recruitment Candidate Profile / Personal Data Screen

    Hi Experts,
I have a very specific requirement.  I need to display a date field from date spec infotype in e-recruitment.  The date type will vary depending on the internal candidate's personnel subarea.  This field needs to be visible to both the candidate and the recruiter, but uneditable.
How can I achieve this?  What is the best approach?  I was thinking about adding it to the Personal Data in the Candidate Profile.
    Thanks in advance
    Shane

Yes, it will wok with Webdynpro
The table T77RCF_PRMC_PL is for customer smartforms, this is where you should insert a record for your new custom smartform, the record will not be there by default, you have to insert it via table maintenance sm30
The default standard smartform is fetched from table T77RCF_PRM_PL for standard smartforms, entry with parameter name FORM_CAND_DOVR
So you have to create an entry in the customer smartforms table T77RCF_PRMC_PL with similar parameter name but with the name of your new custom smartform in the value field...
The logic works like this: it will try to find an entry in the customer table first (T77RCF_PRMC_PL), if it cannot find an entry with parameter name FORM_CAND_DOVR, it will go to the standard table (T77RCF_PRM_PL) where the entry exists by default.
To look into the logic more closely please go to the following method:
    cl_hrrcf_dataoverview_pl
    method: get_cand_dovr
Inside the above method, the logic is implemented inside the following method call:
    CALL METHOD cl_hrrcf_t77rcf_prm_pl=>read_record
            EXPORTING
              iv_prm           = 'FORM_CAND_DOVR'
            IMPORTING
              es_t77rcf_prm_pl = ls_prm.
          lv_cand_dovr_form = ls_prm-value.
I hope I made things more clear...

  • Which external hard drive do i need to transfer my files from my G4 with OS 10.3 to my new iMac?

I have a Mac G4 PowerPC (with: processor speed of 1GHz, 1 MB L3 cache) running OS 10.3.9.  I want to transfer my files from the G4 to my iMac (.21.5/2.5QC/2X2GB/500GB/6750M) which is still in the box, for the last 3 years.  I believe it is running OS Mountain Lion.  All the Mac-compatible external Hard drives i have looked at are for OS 10.5 or 10.7 and above. Are there any external hard drives for sale that will work with my OS 10.3.9 to transfer files to my iMac? If not, how can i do this transfer of files?

An external hard disk drive enclosure with FireWire400/800 ports, with others
may be able to be used; but not as an adapter from one kind of port to another.
The old iMac uses USB, perhaps as slow as 1.1; that won't work with newer
USB3.0; but both the newer and older computers could use FireWire; or maybe
    ethernet for computer to computer.
Newest models have Thunderbolt data ports, so adapter cables are needed.
And then you'll need cables to match whatever combination you end up with.
{You may have tried something or another, but not posted back to say if you did.
    And this thread is nearly two weeks old, now. I just happened to find it here.}
For what you suggest, you may be able to find a suitable cable, perhaps FireWire
or Ethernet, depending on the ports available and cables still applicable to both.
Does newer iMac have FireWire ports? You could buy a FW400 to FW800 cable where
the ends are different, if the newer machine has FireWire800. [The old one has FW400.]
This would have to be equipped with the protruding connectors so each could make
the connection between each computer's built-in ports. Not all cable sets do this.
This would be the fastest way to copy content between machines, if FW 800 in newer mac.
Port-powered external hard drives may be under-powered and fail to work, so that is why
I suggest  enclosed HDD with its own AC power adapter that will not rely on FW or USB
for the power to run the drive and the electronics inside the enclosure.
example of external enclosures with multiple ports and its own power adapter:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
This is an image of the lesser model series with fewer ports. The FW800 and USB3.0
are both backward compatible to their older counterparts, FW400 & USB2.0. But even
so the old 1GHz iMac G4 with USB1.1, would not be able to use newer USB3.0; yet
should be able to connect via FireWire400 to FireWire800 by special cable.
If the iMac G4 is still working, that's a plus. Attempting to remove the old IDE/ATA HDD
and access it outside the PowerPC iMacG4, is really a troublesome effort, one to avoid.
But the PPC iMacG4 can be started in Target Disk Mode and accessed as a hard drive
via FireWire cable, too. Then files can be seen as though the old Mac is an external HD.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • DNG files created with LR4 no longer display thumbnails w/ FastPictureViewer & Win7

I've been using the FastPictureViewer Codec pack so that DNG and camera RAW files show as thumbnails in Explorer for quite some time. Upon upgrading to LR4, DNG files no longer display as thumbnails, but as the generic Windows icon for an image.
Upon researching the issue, and upgrading the Codecs from the supplier (which still did not fix the issue), the supplier tells me the following:
What we solved [in the update] was a crash with the new files. Adobe did not document their
changes, so there is not much we can do except ignore the files. This is
what happens when owners of proprietary formats decide to change stuff
    without notice
If you turn off the "fast load" and "lossy" options the DNG will still be
created following the published 1.3 specification and will work with 3rd
    party software including ours.
The "new DNGs" are for Adobe private use only at the moment. We don't know
(beyond vague promises on employees personal blogs) if they will ever
document what they did and publish an updated specification, they are
certainly under no obligation to do so. The decision they took not to
release updated DNG specs even before LR4 came out was a deliberate one.
While I resolved the problem by turning "fast load" off, I find it highly disturbing that Adobe has made undocumented changes to the DNG format that break 3rd party software. I thought the whole idea of DNG was that it was an OPEN FORMAT and was to prevent situations such as this. At least this is how they sold it to the public and their argument against "proprietary camera manufactuer RAW formats" that could "change at any time".

Actually JS, RAW files converted to DNG with fast load checked from LR4.0 are read, thumbnails and full images are displayed in preview and with Finder in OSX Lion 10.7.3, along with keywords, EXIF data etc. I don't know whether the preview is the RAW or the fast loaded jpeg
    Not that it helps you
Adobe mentioned that they will be making the 1.3 data specs available in the next couple of months, I canna remember the link offhand, and it was a formal post, not an employee blog
Life changes, things upgrade, that is the way of things, but it is very frustrating.

    Hi krmoss,
Welcome to the HP Support forums.  I see that you would like to learn how to check the ink levels on your Officejet 4620 printer.
The steps on how to check the estimated ink levels can be found in your User Guide on page 74 in the section titled “To check the estimated ink levels from the printer control panel”.   If you have installed the full feature software and driver for your printer onto your computer you can open up the HP Solution Center and check the from there as well.

  • Entry Point Drop Site Key (to 9 chars) = LOCY11740 has no effect

We have the following entry in two places within our .PST file.
Entry Point Drop Site Key (to 9 chars) = LOCY11740
I am expecting to see "LOCY11740" in position 52 of the .CSM mail.dat file.  Instead I see "ORIGIN".
We are testing using Presort rel 8.00c.09.00 and generating vers 11-2 Mail.Dat files.
    1.  Am I using the correct parameter in the PST file?
    2.  Is there another PST field that is causing "ORIGIN" to appear?
Postal 1 TEM will flag CSM entries with "ORIGIN" as warnings.  One for each CSM record!

    Hi Paul,
Kendra is correct, according to latest mail.dat spec 12-0 (and also in 11-2) the description of the field Entry Point - Actual / Delivery - Locale Key says
US = LOCA12345 (LOC plus 6 bytes of the Locale key from the drop ship product); u2018ORIGINu2019 for origin entered mail; CAN =A1A 9Z9; u2018FORu2019 for International mail. The field can have a Locale key for origin entered mail when USPS Pick Up is equal to N. See Scenarios and Definitions Sections for alternatives for populating this field. Use value of u2018ORIGINu2019 for Origin/DMU Entered mail OR for US Drop Ship, Zone Skipped, and BMEU entered Mail use the Locale Key ("LOC" in the first 3 bytes, balance is the 6-byte of the USPS dropsite key, also known as the Locale Key); For Canadian mail, use 6 digit Canadian code of Entry facility e.g., A1A9Z9.
According to PostalOne! tech guide available at https://ribbs.usps.gov/intelligentmail_guides/documents/tech_guides/datspec/PostalOneMailDatTechSpec.pdf says the same thing.
    0673
Alphanumeric Data Type Error: Entry Point u2013 Actual/Delivery Locale Key must be an alphanumeric value, must contain 'ORIGIN' when the Entry Point for Entry Discount Facility is set to O or H, and must precede with "LOC" plus 6 alphanumeric characters when the Entry Point for Entry Discount Facility is set to B, R, S, D, A, C, K, J, E, L, T, or Q in the .csm file.
Presort is correct in populating this field with ORIGIN in case of Entry Point Type ="O-Origin".
    Thanks

  • Which External Drive To Get?

Using my Mac Mini as a media server with iTunes.  I am wondering what you guys are using for an external drive that works well with a mini that is being left on 24/7.  My tired 2TB usb 2.0 G-Drive needs replacing, and I would like something that is Thunderbolt friendly and with plenty of room to grow.  RAID 0 or JBOD is all I would need since back up is stored elsewhere.

You don't state how much storage you want to relocate to the new external RAID solution, and your storage growth rate. Right now, Thunderbolt and premium pricing are unavoidable. You can look at Apple's online store under Mac > Storage to see first hand.
The other alternative to exorbitant Thunderbolt storage units is an external SATA III storage array solution that plugs eSata cables into a LaCie Thunderbolt/eSata adapter. Everything that you need is included in that solution except the Thunderbolt data cable that runs between your miniDisplayPort and the LaCie adapter. You configure the RAID setting through Disk Utility in OS X.
It turns out that getting the 1TB low end model and updating it with 2x(2,3,4) TB SATA III drives is more expensive than purchasing a 4TB solution from MacSales. Still quite a bite, but not as bad as an external Thunderbolt RAID array.
