Thunderbolt and motu 8pre

Hi
Does anyone know how to get the MOTU 8pre to work with a Firewire 400 to 800 and Thunderbolt adapter on a
2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 Imac?
Motu support suggest a 400 -800 cable but I have tried this and it just doesn't work!!

yes MOTU comes with the "Cue Mix console" which is used to create a no Latency headphone mix from all of the inputs and outputs on the hardware, but it does not effect the audio passed from the MOTU through the firewire cable to the MAC unless of course you engaged the bounce back feature that sends the monitor mix to the mac. But that would not be set by default. for more info go here:
http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/8pre/cuemixdsp.html
Also there is the MOTU "Audio Setup Program" which allows you to set sample rate and clock source and so on, but all that is set in logic anyway. as soon as you change the settings in Logic, the MOTU audio setup is updated. From there you can also set the the headphone output to monitor the main outs or just what is assigned to the headphone channel. Also from the "General tab you can change the names of your inputs so instead of a generic "Analog 1" you can change the name to something more descriptive
Hope this helps

  • Live recording : MOTU 8pre, ADAT, and Macbook Pro

I have a concert coming up that I'd like to record, and I'd be interested in any input from people that have done it.
Here is the gear I have
    -16 channels of mic splitters
-MOTU 8pre with ADAT (from what I understand I can record 16channels in with that combo)
    -Mackie 16x8 board
-Macbook Pro (dual 2.16Ghz Core Duo)
-1TB Firewire 800 Lacie Big Disk.
-and one person to run the computer off stage
Any thoughts? Could i be done, or am I asking to much from the Macbook Pro?
    Thanks for the help

hmm.. I was under the impression when I bought it that it would do 16channels in, if I use my ADAT with it, connected with optical
From Sweetwater.com; "the 8pre also features two banks of ADAT optical ports, which gives you an additional eight channels at up to 96kHz"
Was I mistaken? That would kinda nix the idea if all I could get was 8 channels.

  • Daisy-chain 2x Motu 8pre

    Hi All,
    I'm trying to daisy-chain 2 Motu 8pre's using ADAT into LE9.
Logic happily recognises one 8pre when used alone. But when I chain the 2 together the only way I can get input is if I use Motu's 'CueMix FX' software.
My proplem with that is....basically, I don't want to use it. It seems if I want to mute an input in logic I have to cross over to CueMix etc.
Anyway. Can I get the two Motu's recognised by Logic as one device, bypass CueMix and do this using ADAT ??
Hoping someone out there is doing this exact thing.
    Cheers. - John.

To daisy chain 2 motu interfaces (or other 8 channel interfaces with lightpipe) you must attach a lightpipe (ADAT) cable to the master interface's INPUT from the second interface's lightpipe OUTPUT. Your master interface IS connected to the computer via firewire. Now DISCONNECT the firewire from the second interface!
This puts your second interface into CONVERTER mode and Logic recognizes its' inputs AFTER you re-set your core audio.
A second lightpipe cable INTO your aux interface FROM your master interface will clock it to the same clock used on the master (word clock, AES, etc..)
Please send me cash for this info.
Took me an hour of futsing to figure it out.
    16 INS!!!!

  • PLEASE HELP!  Logic 8 w/ Apogee Ensemble & MOTU 8pre

    Hello everyone!
This is my first post…I've been tracking this forum for a while and I must say you guys are all informative and generous. So, I hope I can have some generosity FLUNG my way!
    Ok, I have:
*Logic 8 running on my MacBook Pro (2.2GHz , 250GB HD, 4GB RAM).
AYAK, Mac Book Pros have 1 Firewire 800 & 1 Firewire 400 input; I also have a Firewire PCI card plugged in which gives me 2 more FW in's.
*A MOTU 8pre running into my FW CARD with my LaCie HD running into the FW800.
I just recently bought an Apogee Ensemble…. WOW! Are the pres nice! And a FINE integration with Logic, ie the control panel n such! The pres are NEARLY as nice as my Millennia and that's saying a lot! Plus, if I run my Ridge Farm Gas Cookers or my LA-610 into the last 4 inputs, I get a GREAT variety of sounds and controllability.
WELL, the Ensemble is like a HOT girl friend that makes your toes curl but THEN, you find out she's a PSYCHO…but you don't wanna dump her cuz she's just so freakin hot and does things to you that…..c'mon I know we've ALL been there!…..with the girl AND the gear!
So, why PYSCHO? I just bought my unit this past August 22, 2008 (3 daze, I mean DAYS ago) from GC in Hollywood. I figured or ASSUMED it was a CURRENT version without all the BETA issues we've all read about! Well here are the issues:
1.) The MacBook Pro/LOGIC has lost sync (went offline) with it a couple of time and I had to reboot. The Apogee Audio Control Panel has become MOLASSES SLOW…leaving to have to reboot……Are the above DRIVER issues? How do I fix em?
2.) At START UP, I MUST have the Ensemble turned OFF and THEN, once booted up turn on the Ensemble for it to be recognized…now is this NORMAL for a Mac or is this an Ensemble trait? OR is it ANOTHER problem with the Ensemble? (OBTW, I'm a NEW Mac user woo hoo!)……..my MOTU 8pre would always have to be turned on BEFORE I booted up for it to be recognized and used in Logic….this is NOT the case for the Ensemble. I'd like to keep my MOTU 8pre….it's a pretty good interface and served me well as my first interface, as well as having more than decent pres!
3.) Last issue; when I hook BOTH the Ensemble and 8pre to my MBP (via FW of course), LOGIC will NOT recognize the 8pre. I can't even find it as an audio option. I'd like to be able to use BOTH of these and be able to record 16 channels at once…I've tried hooking these up MANY different ways…
-Ensemble to FW port of MBP with 8pre hooked up TO the Ensemble via Ensemble's FW and vice versa
-Ensemble to FW port of MBP with 8pre hooked up TO the Ensemble via Ensemble's LIGHT PIPE
-Ensemble to FW port of MBP and the 8pre hooked up to FW PCI Card port of MBP.
The above didn't seem to work… Can I indeed connect the 8pre AND Ensemble to my MBP and use them TOGETHER????
Now I am a NEWBIE to Mac AND Logic, BUT I ain't no FRESH OFF THE IDIOT TRAIN NEW…I work in computer recording frequently so please don't assume I'm a newbie NOT doing research. This is REAL WORLD TROUBLE HERE!
Also, if you think this is a case of RTFMJ (Read The F**** Manual Jacka$$), then you have NO IDEA what kind of manual comes WITH the Ensemble! Yeah, for those of you that know, the manual is a JOKE and doesn't really address much!
So, please help my fellow Logiceers!! Should I dump the girl and get another 8pre (which I KNOW I can daisy chain together)…remember, this girl is SO HOT….I love this Ensemble, but for $2,000, it shouldn't have THIS many issues! For 2K I get another MOTU 8pre, $500, another HD, $700 (a good Glyph 1TB always comes in handy…hey who doesn’t need another HD sitting around??), and maybe $800 of plug ins! Or shoot, I'll PAY SOME BILLS! So, any clues? Tips?

    Here's the skinny.....
    1) SOUND: Yummy! The best of the gear that I've come from (started 2002 with Roland 1880 & 2480 with Ridge Farm Gas Cookers & Boilers, True System P-Solo, Millennia HV-3, & UA LA610.) Yes, the pre's on the Ensemble are great. Not grungy like my Gas Cookers or even sweetly clean like my Millennia or True.....a nice middle ground. And the Soft Limit is great....the converters (inputs 5-8) going through my pres are sensational! Headphones have finally cleared up! Hmmmm, as have my monitors! Yes I'm going from Roland to Logic 8. It's a world of diff, even though I whole heartedly respect and love the 1880/2480's.......
    2) LATENCY: Yeah Firewire vs Roland's format....well..... unless I REALLY cap my headphones tight, it sounds like I have a 5 millisec delay. I can live with it and compensate.... I'm new to Logic; is there a setting I can change whilst tracking? I don't use plugs while tracking..... I use the 8 X 8 mode to go at a HIGHER samp rate! Oh wow! NICE! And clear as a whistle! I don't get to use the Headphone outs at this rate, instead a TRS to 2X 1/4" break out from the Analog 1 & 2 OUTS....very nice! But, anyhoot Roland does win for Latency. Never any with my Rolands.
    3) MAESTRO: Pretty well laid out and user friendly. UPDATE YOUR DRIVERS FOR LOGIC AND ENSEMBLE!!!! DO IT NOW!
    4) DRIVERS: see above.
    5) SUPPORT: Roland always sucked (wow, I didn't try to make this a Roland comp, just wanted to let you all know where I was coming from), Apogee....well..... 3 voicemails and 2 emails later, and no response on daisy chaining MORE THAN ONE Ensemble (which was one of the advertised selling points) OR using my aforementioned MOTU 8pre WITH the Ensemble via Lightpipe.... The Ensemble CAN NOT, repeat CAN NOT be used with ANYTHING ELSE! I've tried......
With the Ensemble you are STUCK with 8 I/O's.... PERIOD. Now, this isn't necessarily a BAD thing. It's the BEST, I repeat, BEST 8 channeler out there! But, again, with for a Firewire Interface, it is the best, but you're stuck with ONLY 8 inputs until you upgrade to Symphony.
In my case, a Symphony Mobile card (which is what I'd need, since I work through a Mac Book Pro), with an AD16X, DA16X & TWO X-Symphony cards (one for the AD16X & one for DA16X). So that would be a 16 in & 16 out with NO latency and, of course I would need 8 more preamps..... so to best the Ensemble ($2,000), I'd need the above Symphony System ($525, $3,000, $3,000, $175, $175, respectively, plus $4,000 of GOOD pres= $11,000ish)
So, a $2,000 BEST IN CLASS FIRWIRE interface that CAN'T be used with anything else but it's own 8 ins of joy, or $11,000 top of the line kick *** Symphony. I guess I'll keep my Ensemble. I RARELY do more than 8 tracks at once these days. Even for drums...c'mon...if you can't make drums sound kick *** with a KICK, SNARE, HI-HAT, OVERHEAD L & R, TOM, TOM & TOM/SNARE BOTTOM, you need to get a drum machine!
PLUS, the Ensemble will always be great for a quick interface on the go....shoot... a quickee recording gig with my only bringing my MacBook Pro (with CASE of course), a Rackmount (with my rackmounted gear as follows: Power Conitioner, Ensemble, Millennia, LA610, headphone amp, midi/usb interface & Glyphs) a Dolly, some mic stands, Mics, & a plug snake & cables..... that's a pretty darn good to-go menu! Shoot, how many ON LOCATION gigs have we done where this set up coulda been used! (Christmas CD's, choirs, Jazz Pianist, Voice overs).....let's just hope your client doesn't need NINE tracks recorded at once! yes, still bugged about that APOGEE!!!!!!
So there ya have it as far as my experience goes. I'll keep reporting back when I have more tastes of this 8 TRICK PONY ..... but what a pony it is!
OBTW, looks like I'll be SELLING my MOTU 8pre since I can't use it with my Ensemble!
    Stay tuned.....

  • Audition CS6 recognizes MOTU 8Pre but will not record

I've used Audition for several years in a Mac environment with a Presonus Firestudio and not experienced any problems, but I'm now using a PC and a MOTU 8Pre (USB) for recording, and have run into trouble right away.
The 8Pre seems to be set up correctly, with all the current ASIO drivers installed on the PC, and Audition seems to recognize both it and the MOTU Audio Console. However, I can't record anything. I can see/assign all the 8Pre's inputs and I can arm tracks for record, but the track input levels do nothing onscreen, and if I hit "record" and then "stop", not even silence is recorded. There's just nothing on the track. Meanwhile, the input signal is strong on the 8Pre's physical display, and all of my Audio Hardware settings/preferences suggest that everything is OK.
    Ideas? Thanks.

    I should have checked that, ain't I.
Calling up an old session just now, the transport does indeed move when I tell it to play. When I monitor from the phone jack on the front of the 8pre, I can't hear any output; when I monitor instead from the main outs on the back of it, I can hear a very faint output. It's still unresponsive when I try to record, but it's definitely playing back on the Audition end of things.
I wouldn't be surprised if I just needed to spend more time setting up the 8pre, but if that's the case I figure I should at least be able to record within the DAW, even if I don't get any signal. So I'm not sure.

  • Anyone using MOTU 8pre with 10.5.2/Logic 8 Express...?

Looking at a MOTU 8pre to use with Logic 8 Express. Does anyone know if the 8pre is compatible with Leopard 10.5.2... any issues to report?

I previously got the 8pre for 10.5.1 since my M-Audio Firewire 410 didn't offer drivers for leopard. So far I'm very happy with the Motu 8pre. I just got the new MBP Pernryn with 10.5.2 and hoping that everything continues smoothly. I've just downloaded the motu driver for 10.5.1 (the 10.5.2 motu driver isn't available yet) to use with 10.5.2 so I'll be plugging in my 8pre tonight for a test run.

  • What's the difference between thunderbolt and mini displayport?

I'm trying to connect my Macbook with a monitor and I'm thinking of what cable to get. I will have to connect using a (Thunderbolt to HDMI cable) or a (mini displayport to HDMI cable).
I was wondering what's the difference between Thunderbolt and mini displayport
    Thanks

@bontistic: it is not true that only the Macbook Air supports Thunderbolt. All models(!) support thunderbolt: also the Macbook Pro's and Mini's. Eg.: http://www.apple.com/nl/macbookpro/features.html#thunderbolt
My Macbook Pro from 2011 already supported Thunderbolt...

  • I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?

I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?

It's almost impossible.  The new iMacs have a Target Display Mode, but it's built to do that.  Without ripping your screen out, finding an acceptable power supply, frame, and whatever electronics to convert a Thunderbolt signal to the screen, the cost will be much larger than buying a cheaper HiDef monitor that runs with an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable to your MacBook 15.  In fact, you can sell your 17" MBP for a lot of money, unless it's broken or something, buying you a really sweet monitor.
By the way, I found your answer by searching this forum.  I would suggest using the search function here in the futuere.

  • I hate this Thunderbolt and I can't take it anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a POWER phone user (but I don't root or jailbreak). If I want to watch a Youtube vid, it had better come up. If I want to sream a radio station, it had better buffer and play, when I want to check something out on a website, it had better come up for me. Otherwise, why not just buy a basic phone? I can do all this other stuff from home. But I don't have TIME at home. I only have time when I'm out and about. So...if my phone doesn't live up to the hype, It just makes me all the more angry.
This Thunderbolt reboots all the time AND loses it's data connection, even after the update. I'm hoping Gingerbread OTA comes out today as planned.
But I have a theory as to why this is happening.
I think It has something to do with the networks and Andriod and isn't specific to VZW or the Tbolt. My buddy now lives in a 4G market and never has any issues. He's with Sprint and has their Droid X equivilant. His phone will rarely and only reboot when he's in this area (Kokomo, IN) and he just got Gingerbread and says it really improved battery life.
I drive 30miles one way to work. There are many routes I can take, but they are all rural. Kokomo is a hodge podge of crap networks. We're 3G, EV, 1x, etc. So nothing lasts long when driving as you'll drift in and out of the various networks all the time. And my phone will almost always reboot when I'm driving, and with no rhyme or reason, consistancy, etc. If it doesn't reboot (which I'm convinced isn't a heat issue either), it will at least lose it's data connectivity. Sometimes It comes back on, but most of the time I have to pull the battery. In the Driod forum, many others have said the same thing, and that a refurb replacement didn't help. So, I don't think it's the phone, but rather how Android handles networks.
I haven't checked... but do other Android phones reboot and lose data like mad? I was surprised when my non-VZW buddy told me his Droid X w/ Sprint rebooted yesterday. For a period of time after the last update, my data connection was fine, but rebooting startedh happening all the time. I don't think my phone rebooted once prior to the last update. My iPhone friends never talk about any of these issues... or any issues to be honest.
Which brings me to this... I was so excited to get this phone. It was my first Droid phone and I chose it over the iPhone only because I had plans on getting an iPad 2. I already have an iPod Touch. So I am stacked full of app's. If I'm in a 4G area, (which is hardly ever), the phone seem to peform fine. I came from a Blackberry Tour 9630, which I thought was the worst phone ever. But this one is JUST as bad, and one of the worst decisions I've made in a long time. I love many things about Andriod and this phone, but I spend more time in forums looking for solutions, (while holding back the desire to smash the phone to bits), than I do using it. I basically dream even using the phone anymore because it will always infuriate me at some point. One more ill-timed reboot is going to make me snap (It's not like my Blackberry, but not exaclty a fast booter either!).
And what stinks is that I'm stuck with it until the end of 2012! Plus, I've invested in an extended life battey and a skin. It's annoying how few aftermarket products are avail for this phone to be honest. Battery life is dreadful, so an extened battery is a must. God forbid Otterbox release a case that fits an ext life battery too. It's not going to happen. So, I'm stuck wiith skins, which is fine.
Also, the charge jack is located in the DUMBEST spot ever. Do you think I'll ever see a good cradle that allows me to watch movies or whatever in landscape mose while charging? I bet not. Yes, I know they make some, but none are any good. I quite simpley I hate this phone and regret buying it. I've been with Verizon for a LOOOONG time too.
I went to the local store, and they are all really cool and nice, but acted like I was supposed to live w/ the reboots and loss of data. Someone there always grabs the phone and checks it out, making sure the settings are correct, and hands it back. I want a phone that works!!! God forbid they let me get a different phone. I'll even pay my insurance ded of $99 to get out of this phone.
If I call tech support, they are going to want to do my SECOND hard reset, which is a pain to get up and running again. My gmail addy book is dialed in, so I'm good there. But a hard reset won't work, because it doesn't work for anyone else. A refurb phone will do the same thing, and so will a new. Besides, I bet half of those refurbed phones are from rebooting problems anyway! If I march down to the VZW store, they'll tell me to wait till the OTA update hits to see if that works, which it might. But I've read that people who have rooted their phones and got the update say it's better, but still has some issues and quirks. I've been trying all day to get the update, but I bet that they haven't even released it. I need to check. Last time I got an OTA update, I had to get it in the middle of the night.
My point is.... i'm in cell h--- in this area. We are a 3G city, but if you go any direction out of the city, you start getting into to Centennial Wireless territory, and they are a giant thorn in the side to all major cell companies. They won't let go of a particular area and because of it, Kokomo will likely have ghetto 4G. At least for me, because I'll be far away from the tower. Plus, I live on the south edge of town. So, as I travel south to Indy, I'll have weak 4G, and then get into North Indy's weak 4G until I get closer to the city. Then it's FAST!! Good 4G service is unreal. I'm just regurgitating what a VZW rep told me. I'm just repeating it all back with some "hatred" mixed in.
So, I don't know what to do. Call Tech Support? Beg for a refurb that likely won't work? I could file an insurance claim since I have a legit reason. Sweat got under the display and won't go away. It's not bad, but it's not perfect. The people at the VZW store told me that I really need to get a Bluetooth headset, esp if I sweat a lot. I also put the phone in the crook of my neck a lot and talk while working. This almost always hangs up the call. Very irritating!!
They also told me at the store that if I go thru Insurance and pay my $99 ded, I MAY have a chance to talk them into letting me get a different phone of equal or more value but i'll have to really sell the idea. And if so, I'm going iPhone 4. Period. I don't think it's necc better than my Tbolt, but it's reliable, I have tons of app's for it already, and I'm a Mac user anyway. It just makes sense. Otherwise, there is NO CHANCE i'll be able to talk VZW into getting me out of this phone, even though none of these issues were present while I had the return policy. Only after did it start to do all of these weird things.
It sounds like I'm complaining about the Tbolt just to get the iPhone and I'm not. I'm upset because using my phone is a horrible experience as it's either slow, has a horrible connection most of the time when I'm driving, and is only useful on Wifi. Maybe a different phone will be no better and I'm just cursed to live in a bad market? VZW was supposed to the be the best though, so switching probl won't help me.
Not sure what to do exactly... so I will probl wait to see if anyone has any suggestions. I hate to be so negative, but I'm likely SOL, and that's really sad. VZW has been very good to me over the years, but i don't see how this will end well for me.

You know something ironic? I tried to respond to this using my Thunderbolt and the stock browser, and I couldn't type anything in this box! HA!! I'm doing this from the web.
Anyway, doing the *#*#4636#*#* thing did the trick. I'm now running CDMA (PRL), and only have had one reboot in two days. Usually I would have like 10. This totally confirms that it's something with the brains of the Tbolt that can't handle hand-off's on non-4G networks. In fact, in the past my phone would be in 3G mode, then when a 1x handoff needed to happen, my phone would either not hand off to 1x at all, or it would simply LOSE it's data connection. I watched my signal on my trip home yesterday, and it would easily switch in and out of 3G and 1X. As I said, I'm in "cell hell" here, so I bet I change from 1x to 3G at least 4 times in a 30 mile radius either direction.
So, for VZW store employees to tell people we'll be 4G before the end of year, is just a ploy to cell the new phones. Even if Kokomo goes 4G, it's only good if you never leave town! If half the state is still 1X, then what hope is there that most places will be 4G?
I don't understand, outside of sheer cost, what the problem is making 1x Towers 3G or 4G capable? Are these towers privately owned? Is it up to the owner to fork over the money? Why would they do that for the convenience of minority 4G users if 1X and 3G works "Ok"? It should be manditory. And there are towers ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, so I can only imagine the expense involved. But still, these companies have a responsibility to stay current. Otherwise, someone else will come along with a totally dialed in network and they'll lose business. I'm starting to think VZW is getting so big so fast that they can't keep up.
verizon has the largest network. they have the fastest network. what more can they do? yes, they focus on major markets, but that's because that is where they make money. they aren't a public utility. they are a for profit corporation. their coverage speaks for itself. they pay WAY more attention to the rural areas than any other carrier.....but it's just bad business to throw ten towers in a spread out rural area that will cover a few thousand people....when they can use 9 of those towers in an area that will cover 200,000 people. their LTE network is 10 times faster than sprint's "4g" and they are banking on domintaing the market with it, just like they did with 3g. keep in mind that they launched the first LTE areas only 6 months ago and this is still very new technology.
for the record though, i mostly keep mine in 3g right now, as it is much better on my battery. i switch it to 4g if i'm not near wifi and want to browse or download something. i'm in a strong LTE network and i do believe this LTE network will blow the other carriers out of the water. my 3g incredible speed tests at the same rate as my friends' EVO's on sprint's "4g" netowrk. (just under 2 mbps). no reboots, but i didn't install they update back in may.

  • Have thunderbolt and need to sync ical with google calendar in order to use.  Any suggestions?

Have a thunderbolt and MacBook.  Need to sync ical with google calendar as thunderbolt supports google calendar.  Any suggestions?

I think we may be talking about two different things. Thunderbolt is the new two way display port on Mac Book Pros and Apple displays.
Thunderbolt (originally codenamed Light Peak) is an interface for connecting peripheral devices to a computer via an expansion bus. Thunderbolt was developed by Intel and brought to market with technical collaboration from Apple Inc. It was introduced commercially on Apple's updated MacBook Pro lineup on February 24, 2011.
Thunderbolt combines PCI Express and DisplayPort into a serial data interface. A single Thunderbolt port supports hubs as well as a daisy chain of up to seven Thunderbolt devices; up to two of these devices may be high-resolution displays using DisplayPort. You can move data to and from peripherals up to 20 times faster than with USB 2.0 and up to 12 times faster than with FireWire 800.

  • Is it possible to connect a mac book pro via thunderbolt and a dvi switchbox (multiple computers) to a thunderbolt display?

    Hi,
I'm planning to buy a thunderbolt display.Since I have not only apple computers with a thunderbolt port I wonder if it's possible to connect my mac book pro via thunderbolt and a DVI switchbox via a "mini displayport to DVI connector" to the thunderbolt display at the same time. Thunderbolt is a bus architecture. Thus there must be an ingoing and an outgoing port on the display. The rearview of the display I've seen so far don't show this:
If this is not possible then I must question the market chances of this product. Seems as if the product marketing guys exaggerated the launch of the thunderbolt technology.

How to connect windows laptop (vga) to thunderbolt display?
AHHH??!!!!!!  Was that your original question??   I assumed you were trying to output FROM your computer (MacBook Pro w/ Thunderbolt) to the new display and then OUT to be the video source to a DVI switcher.
    MB Pro w/TB ---> TB Display ---> mDP-to-DVI adapter ---> DVI switcher
So it seems as if it's not possible to use the thunderbolt display with the mini display port adapter to DVI you've mentioned.
I did not understand that you were trying to use other PC's into a switcher and then THAT Video source to connect INTO the TB display.   If THAT is what you're trying to do, then NO....  You can NOT use the new TB Display to be used to display "FROM" a DVI switcher (and also can NOT be used to display from other Non-TB-Apple computers).
I've also called apple. The statement was that one needs a computer with osx 10.6.x in order to connect the thunderbolt display. That makes it impossible to hook a windows pc or older mac to the new and shiny thunderbolt display.
I wonder why apple doesn't state this in their technical descriptions...?

Here are two different statements from that webpage:
So yes.... other NON-Apple PC's (or non-TB devices) do Not have the Thunderbolt technology (hardware/software) to be able to communicate with the TB display or other TB devices.

  • About to throw my thunderbolt and hope it breaks into a million pieces.

Sorry I know that sounds violent but I have had SO many problems with my Thunderbolt and my early upgrade isn't until November...The power button stopped working so I had to download an app that allows me to unlock my screen with the volume button. This is awful because once that is hit it will randomly call out or do other things because it doesn't lock. The battery life is awful I went on a trip yesterday and within 12 hours the battery died twice. that is after I had started with a full charge and charged it fully and by the time I was home 12 hours later it was in the red again. ALSO, when my phone completely dies and I put in on to charge it will not begin taking the charge for about 35 minutes then the orange light will come on and start charging. If my phone is off it takes 3 minutes for it to turn back on. THEN, this past weekend it shut off in the middle of a phone call and while on a 3 hour drive it decided to try to reboot and only got to the first HTC screen for about 20 minutes. I am pretty sure I could go on but I am going to go crazy for another 2 months with this phone. I am NOT going to pay the outrageous fees to upgrade extra early. PLEASE HELP ME!!
I'm sorry to sound like an awful customer but this phone is making me go insane.
    Thanks in advance.
    A

I'm not sure what kind of help you are looking for. With your upgrade date being in November, I will assume your phone is out of warranty.
Do you have an old phone, possibly the one you had prior to the Thunderbolt, laying around which you could reactivate until you reach your upgrade date? You could also try eBay or Swappa.com to get a phone to hold you over until your upgrade date.
Edit: or do you have a friend with an old unused phone laying around you could use for a couple of months. Just activate it on your current line until your upgrade date.

  • Is thunderbolt and mini the same thing?

Hi, I'm a little confused about my 'thunderbolt' ports on my Mac Book Pro. Are 'thunderbolt' and mini connecting cables pretty much the same thing (disregarding connectivity speeds) and can I just buy a generic mini-to-HDMI or mini-to-VGA cable to connect a third display to my Mac or do I specifically need the proprietry 'thunderbolt-to-HDMI/VGA' cable from apple?

Any Mini DisplayPort adapter or cable can be used with a computer's Thunderbolt port.

  • Can Thunderbolt and Firewire co-exist?

The question: Are there any known problems with using an external Thunderbolt drive and occasionally switching between Thunderbolt and Firewire800 (via the TB to FW adapter)?
More detail: I'm considering the purchase of a thunderbolt external drive as a backup unit for a NAS. The plan is to use the unit mainly on a Mac with a TB port. However, it would be useful to have the option to use the Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt cable if/when access to the drive must be done using a Mac with only FW800 port.
    TIA.

There should be no issues that arise from occasionally using an adapter or switching between FW and TB ports in that situation.  Basically, the device is just looking for a way to send and receive a bunch of zeroes and ones.  As long as you give it a way to do so, it's happy.

  • Thunderbolt and FireWire 800 / 400

    Hey gang!
I have a 2011 MacMini and a theoretical question.  I have a FW800 external drive connected to it for my TimeMachine backup.  I also have a FW400 audio capture box I use from time to time.
I used to chain the drive and audio device, but that slows the FW chain to 400 speeds instead of 800.  If I connect the FW800 drive directly to the Mac mini, and the FW400 audio capture box to the Mac min via the Thunderbolt-to-FW800 adaptor(via a small 800-to-400 converter plug), will that slow the whole bus down to 400, or will they work at independent speeds?
I assume the Thunderbolt and FW chips are indepent and that the would NOT slow down speeds, but I would like to hear a more technical answer to my question.
    Thank you in advance.

Apple sells a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 cable here. Connect directly to your external drive with this cable, and the FW400 audio capture box (with adapter) to the Mini's FW800 port.
