Thunderbolt Cable Easily Disconnecting on Regular Basis?

Is anyone else having the issue of their portable Seagate Thunderbolt drives disconnecting from Macbook Pro laptops with minor movement of either laptop or drive? I'm using the Apple manufactured Thunderbolt cables and even slight movement of my Macbook Pro disconnects the the drives from my computer. The Thunderbolt cables are nowhere near as tight as a USB connection. Though I love Thunderbolt speed I'm seriously dissapointed with the system due to this issue. Below is additonal info I sent to Apple via Feedback form.
I recently added two Seagate Thunderbolt portable drives to my workflow. Using the new system now for 6 months I have to say I'm very disappointed in how loose the Thunderbolt connection is when connected to my Macbook Pro Retina. I'm using Apple made Thunderbolt cables. Very little movement of the laptop regularly disconnects the cables enough to eject the drive.  This is not only dangerous to my drives but also annoying since often the ejection damages my Aperture Library and upon reopening of the said library it has to go through a lengthy process of repairing itself. Please make the Thunderbolt ports tighter so slight movement does not create this problem. Thank you.

Thank you for posting this.
It reminds me of the inherently poor design of the old Ethernet AUI cables.
Gravity is not being kind to Thunderbolt connections. They are insidious and do not appear to be less than perfectly seated, when they may be.
I use a MBP (sorry to say pre-Retina!)  with a pair of external LaCie RAID enclosures via Thunderbolt. I have experienced issues with programs (Final Cut Pro X for video and Capture One for photography) while accessing these drives. The issues have been Thunderbolt connectivity.Crashing, inability to read OR write, abrupt changes in state, etc. Reseating the cable(s) and then having to treat the interface like cob webs - total BS.
Some manner of strain relief is required, and it should be very easy to design this into the cable and/or interface.
I am fearful, however, as we are potentially breaching the fuzzy area which devices Real World Use and Design.
I am guessing it will be up to the clever third parties of the world to engineer a solution.

have a macbook pro, looking at getting an iMac for home, can i share files easily i.e through a thunderbolt cable? dont want to use dropbox as it will take too long, need direct access to my macbook via the imac

Assuming you have a wireless network at home, just use file sharing. System Preferences / Sharing. Choose a folder you want to share and you're done.

Could it be a borked cable ? I just bought it new from the store today, i have updated both imac and macbook pro to latest thunderbolt firmware and updates. Both 10.7.3.

You are correct, here is what Apple Says:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775
I was able to find these instructions, however they referr to 2009-2011 27" iMacs. I think it's the same, if it's not then contact Apple directly for instructions. If either of the machines is less than 90 days old or covered by AppleCare then call AppleCare tomorrow for help, they should be able to easily answer this for you. You will find the number in your manual or you can use the AppleCare Contact Info link.
Your iMac should automatically recognize the presence of a digital video signal at the Mini DisplayPort and enter Target Display Mode.
If your iMac does not automatically enter Target Display Mode, press command + F2 to manually enter Target Display Mode.

  • Has anyone had a problem with thunderbolt cables not fitting properly?

I recently purchased an UA Apollo Duo interface. It is thunderbolt equipped. The thunderbolt cables either fit super tight in the interface or not tight enough on the macbook. In fact it fits so poorly on my macbook that the slightest jiggle will disconnect the interface! Not good. The thunderbolt ports on my macbook have been unused up to this point so its not a matter of them being worn out.
I'm surprised this wasn't more standardized.

Not here;  updated three systems without issues.
Can you provide more details on your system specs, the projects you're referring to, and what kind of behavior you're encountering?

  • WD MyBook Thunderbolt Duo disc disconnects using Mavericks on new MacBook Pro

I have to pull out and back the thunderbolt cable to wake it up again. Every time I also get the error or warning that first the disc A was not properly disconnected and later the same with disc B. I have tested the disk using WD:s diagnosis software, and it reports everything okey.

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Test after each one. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure that the right volume is selected in the Startup Disk preference pane.
    2. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up. If there's no change, reconnect them
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. Reset the PRAM.
    5. Start up in safe mode, then restart as usual. If you can't start in safe mode—for instance, if FileVault is active—then triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /var/folders
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with an item named "folders" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Restart and empty the Trash.

  • Is it OK to plug/unplug Thunderbolt cables with power on?

I know USB does not require power down first, but Thunderbolt?

If you're unplugging a drive - be it Thunderbolt, USB, FireWire 800 - be sure and unmount the drive(s) before disconnecting the Thunderbolt cable.

  • Thunderbolt cable iphoto transfer

I have a 27" imac with all my stuff runnung 10.9.1.  Just got a new MBP running 10.9.1.
It been a while and I'm having trouble transfering an entire iphoto library. my goal is to transfer from imac to mbp.
So far I have connected the imac to mbp using a thunderbolt cable and running the imac in T mode.
What is the easyist way to do this.  The library contains ~ 68 GB data.
When I try to drop the library into the mbp iphoto it only lets me re-launch which does not transfer.
When I drop the library on to the mbp desk top it says it will take hours.....
This is what my imac shows..... The library I want to transfer is call iphoto Library ROD.

Sorry, I misread that the first time you said it because in the earlier post it said "4500 out of the 1500" and the math didn't work so I didn't get it. I see what you mean now.
In that case none of our suggestions is the right one, not even Migration Assistant. Instead do this in iPhoto: If you have already identified the 4500 keepers, just select them all and do an Export with the format set to Original. Exporting will copy them all to some folder where you can easily move them over to the new Mac. Or you could share the folder where you want them to go in the new Mac, mount it using Thunderbolt networking from the old Mac and export to that.
If you didn't want all 4500 in one folder but to preserve existing organization, the Export feature in iPhoto has a "Subfolder Format" option that lets you organize the export by "Event Name." If you need more than that maybe Aperture could help there after all. Or maybe it would be faster to transfer everything to the new Mac and then delete the ones you don't want to keep.
    Sorry for the numerical error.
The folders/albums/folders/albums must follow the pictures or this is of no value.
I tryed your last suggestion and transfered the whole library over and deleted all the unwanted folders but the problem here is it still leaves all the photos in the "new" library.
The goal here may be a silly one but this is for a huge car modification project and I would like to be able to temporarily take off my 27" imac and transfer to my MBP when I travel.  I can "work" on the refining the car library then when I return home transfer the new work back to the imac and delete the older version. I was hoping that the speed of the hunderbolt cable would make this "doable".

Your answer is likely in Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support If you are familiar with this document, please re-read it and I suspect you may find something you either missed or are doing incorrectly.

When we are starting , it stays for couple of mins say 10/15 mins then it stops.
Can any body have any idea what should i do to get it resolved.

The logs look odd to say the least on start up and there are couple items when the service gets the signal to shutdown that are suspicious.
My suggestion is to troubleshoot top down. Clean up the discrepant messages upon startup.

One common cause of this problem is running a 32-bit version
of the Wrapper with a 64-bit version of Java, or vica versa.
    This is a 64-bit JVM.
Are you attempting change the existing out of box JVM?
You know it doesn't use sun jvm anymore. It's JROCKIT.
Make sure your JVM Settings are as follows:
    C:\bea\alui\configmgr\2.0\settings\config\wrapper_base.conf
    # Java Application
    wrapper.java.command=%JRE_PATH%/bin/java
    THEN Verify:
    CMD
    cd C:\bea\alui\common\jre\1.5.0_32\
java -versionYou should get something like.
    java version "1.5.0_12"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_12-b04)
    BEA JRockit(R) (build R27.4.0-90-89592-1.5.0_12-20070928-1715-windows-ia32, comp
    iled mode)
In any case, your enviroment seems funky. Use the tips above to troubleshoot.
Troubleshoot this error first and find out why it thinks your using a 64 bit JVM versus a 32 bit one.
Last tip: Place Logging into Debug to see whether more logging will give you further insight into the problem.
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers!!!

  • I want to use my Macbook Air 2011 as an external disk for my iMac 2011. I connected the two with a Thunderbolt cable and when starting the MacBook Air I pressed "T" and it worked except with Office documents. Can anybody help?

I want to use my MacBook Air as an external disk to my iMac. I talked to Apple care and we solved it by connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the two computers. I then turn on the MacBook Air while pressing the "T" and it works. I can sit and work on my iMac and grab/change/save the files that are in my MacBook Air EXCEPT for the Microsoft Office files. I called Microsoft and they can't solve it. They say it might be a problem with the Thunderbolt cable. Has anybody have this problem?
Both computers are 2011 and they both have Office 2011.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alejandra

For Word it says "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example, /)"
For Excel it says "the file could not be found. Check te spelling of the filename, and verify that the file location is correct. If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure hat the file has not been renamed, moved or deleted.
I tried this with many different documents, and I always get the same message.

  • Use Thunderbolt cable to transfer files from a mac to a Mac Mini Server

I want to transfer a large document folder of files from a MacBook Pro (MBP) to a Mac Mini Server (MMS) using Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt cable.  How?
Currently both the MBP and MMS are on the same Wireless-N network.
Obviously the Mac Mini Server cannot be booted in Target-Drive mode because there are other users using it as a server.
Both computers installed OS X Mavericks 10.9.1.

    Update:
Thunderbolt Bridge is the ultimate solution (on OS X Mavericks 10.9.1).  It gives amazing speed transferring files without downtime on the source and target computers (in my case the MacBook Pro and the Mac Mini Server).  Up to 7 times faster in writing and 30 times faster in reading than Wireless N!
My Settings:  Systems Preferences > Network > Set Service Order ... and drag the Thunderbolt Bridge as the top Service (and thus above Ethernet and Wi-Fi), click OK and Apply.  I only set it on the source computer (MacBook Pro) but you may try to set both.
Then connect the two computers with the Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt Cable and wait for about 15 seconds till they get the Self-Assigned IP addresses.  From the Network Preferences page, you'll see the Thunderbolt Bridge rises to the top on BOTH computers.  (The button remains amber, not green.  It's okay.) Then you can start file transfer from the source computer (e.g. using Finder or an app such as TuneSpan to locate the target location on the target computer).
To play save, I use BlackMagic to test the connection speed before starting the real transfer.  I found that sometimes I don't need to turn off the WiFi on the source computer (MacBook Pro) but turning WiFi off on the source computer gives me a peace in mind.
    See what I got:
    From the Thunderbolt Bridge:
From WiFi using Airport Time Capsule 802.11ac on Wireless-N:
Note: After you finished the file transfer, Turn back on the Wi-Fi and Eject the target folder from the source computer before unplugging the Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt cable.

Have most recent macbook pro connected to thunderbolt via thunderbolt cable.  Occasionally when I close my laptop the thunderbolt display goes black and does not come back on---even in response to keyboard.  Help

    Hello QuinnDev,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you are trying to use your MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt Display in closed clamshell mode (MacBook Pro closed), but sometimes the display doesn't stay on.  I found an article that talks about closed clamshell mode.  You would have to fulfill the following requirements to use your display this way:
    Requirements for closed display mode:
    Power adapter
    External keyboard, mouse, or trackpad
    External display
You can find all the steps and the full article here:

    I hope this helps!
    All the best,
    Sheila M.

  • To use imac 27 late2009 as monitor for macbook pro 13 rethina with thunderbolt cable

when i us a thunderbolt cable from mac book pro rethina to my imac 27 late 2009 nothing happen, even with command F2 i can not use the imac as monitor for the mcbook pro

You have got a problem: your iMac does not detect Thunderbolt cables because it has got Mini DisplayPort instead. However, you can use your iMac as a display for your MacBook Pro.
To do this, you need to get a Mini DisplayPort cable like this one and connect it to your iMac and the MacBook Pro. Then, press Command and F2 keys on your iMac and it will show up as a screen for your MacBook Pro.

  • I am considering a Apple iMac but would be interested in adding a second monitor. Does it have to be an Apple monitor or can i add any monitor with a thunderbolt cable and DVI or vGA adapter?

I am considering a Apple iMac but would be interested in adding a second monitor. Does it have to be an Apple monitor or can i add any monitor with a thunderbolt cable and DVI or vGA adapter?

I found that the Thunderbolt input accepts the mini-DVI (in my case converter to VGA for a tutorial use monitor)
BUT, you have to really oush it in 'til it clicks.  I thought it too loose until I tried it.  works just fine!!
i get a solved for my own  LOL
