Thunderbolt Cable - Macbook Pro to iMach 21.5 inch

We have just purchased an iMac 21.5 inch and we would like to use it also as a display for our Macbook Pro (late 2010). How should we connect them? We were sold a Thunderbolt Cable, but that does not work.
Bought the iMac in the USA, and since we don't live there we cannot go back to the shop. When buying the product we specifically asked that this was one of the reasons for purchasing an iMac, besides making it our family iMac.
zxThanks for your suggestions.

Ok.  Good luck.
If this purchase outside the 2-week return timeframe (I think it's 2 weeks) you may have a problem returning it.  But of course it doesn't hurt to give it a try.
FWIW, here's some related articles on this topic.  Maybe you can use it as some "ammunition" in arguing with apple (...or not).

    Hi a,
    http://www.mctiviausa.com/
    There has been "talk" on and off of Apple TV doing it (and people have done it with a hack), but I haven't really followed it.
    It would be a whole lot cheaper getting an adapter (as needed) and cable and simply pluggin it in when you're in the kitchen.

  • I want to buy macbook pro without retina display 13 inch. How much does it cost? Is it available now?

    Hi,
    I want to buy macbook pro without retina display 13 inch model. How much does it cost? And is it available now? I heard that Apple is going to discontinue this model soon. Is it true?
    Kindly let me know.
    Thank you.

    Apple's still selling the 13" (but not 15") non-Retina model... see -> http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=MD101LL/A&step=config.
    Good luck,

  • How Can i connect using Thunderbolt a Macbook Pro with the New iMac

    I bought the new Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt and instead of buying a new external monitor, i am thinking that the new iMac with Thunderbolt is a great idea.
    Is there a cable to connect the Macbook Pro and use as iMac as external monitor, using Thunderbolt.
    thanks

    I understood your question perfectly and the answer is absolutely yes. When you change the iMac into target display mode you underlying operating system continues to run all existing applications. For example in my case if I finished editing some video and am about to enter a lengthy render process or something which may draw lots of resources like hand real, I set it to start on the iMac and then switch it to target display mode to use it as a monitor with my MacBook air in the meantime.
    Only one small caveat in your case though.  Since the target display mode is a feature of OSX (eg the OS interprets the special key stroke and changes the iMac into target display mode) you should make sure Lion server supports the target display mode feature. I don't see a reason why it wouldn't but that's the only thing currently crossing my mind. Keep in mind the compatibilities between ports as noted in my blog. If any of your machines have mini display port and you intend to connect the new iMac in target display mode you will run into issues. In that special scenario, I recommend buying a refurb iMac from 2010 which urtilize the displayport allowing you to use it as a display for all your macs -- those with thunderbolt as well as those with displayport. If you have thunderbolts then definitely go with the thunderbolt iMac.

  • How to connect my old 20in Cinema Display to my thunderbolt new MacBook Pro?

    Hi everyone, I just brought a new MacBook Pro to replace a older model(brought earlier 2010), and a new thunderbolt Cinema Display. I have a old 20 inch LCD Cinema Display all the way from 2005 and brought a mini display port for my old MacBook Pro, worked just fine. However with the new Thunderbolt Display, I noticed there's another thunderbolt port behind and was thinking to connect my old Cinema Display as a secondary monitor. I've brought a thunderbolt port from amazon (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007KB0EGC/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_1 ), but my old monitor still shows black. What did I do wrong here? Thanks!

    So currently there are two displays and you expect there to be three?
    Can you swap the displays just to make sure there is nothing else wrong?
    That is confirm:
    1) MBP -> Display A works
    2) MBP -> Display B works
    Then try:
    MBP +-> Display A

        +-> Display B

  • Upload pics from my thunderbolt to macbook pro

    Hey Guys,
    I was wondering if anyone here nows how to get pictures from the thunderbolt onto a macbook pro.  When I hook up my phone to my macbook it says it can't  read it.  Im new to mac as well.  If anyone could give me a detailed response on how to do this, it would be great.
    Thanks!

    I am sure that there is another way, but this might be the easiest for you.
    Turn off the Thunderbolt. Take off the back cover, remove the battery and the SD card. The SD card is to the right of the camera lens. With either a micro SD card reader or SD card adapter and related SD card reader, mount the reader to the Mac computer as an external drive. Copy the pictures from the DCIM folder on the SD card to wherever you want them on the computer. When done properly disconnect the SD card from the computer. Reassemble the phone (SD card, battery and back cover) and turn it back on.

  • Cabling MacBook Pro to HP Photosmart C4280 Printer

    This probably sounds ridiculous, and it's my first post, but I can't find any way to make the Belkin USB Extension Cable fit into the USB port on the back of my HP printer. Since only one end of the USB cable fits into the USB port on my MacBook Pro, it needs to be the opposite end that goes to my printer. But the receptacle on the printer is square shaped and narrow, and both ends of the USB cable are flat and rectangular and too wide to fit into the printer port. Both the printer and the cable were sold to me by Apple, and the sign on the HP Printer display at the Apple store says that it takes a Belkin 6 or 10 foot cable. Has anybody else encountered this issue? Thank you for any light you can shed on this.

    How are you connecting the printer to the MacBook?
    What version of OSX are you using?

  • Thunderbolt Display + MacBook Pro w/out a Thunderbolt port?

    I have a 2009 MacBook Pro (MB990LL/A) without a Thunderbolt port and a new Apple Thunderbolt Display (27-inch).  Is there any way to make these devices compatible? Would the Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter work?

    What are the system requirements for using my Apple Thunderbolt Display in Boot Camp?

    How many Apple Thunderbolt Displays can I use with Mac in Windows 7 or 8 with Boot Camp?
    Can I connect a Mini DisplayPort display to my Apple Thunderbolt Display for computers that support using more than one display?
    Can I use an Apple Thunderbolt Display and an iMac in Target Display Mode to act as two additional displays for my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac?

  • SATA Cable MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2009

    Hello,
    I recently had a problem with my MacBook Pro computer suddenly stopped booting, without more, overnight.
    However I could boot the operating system perfectly from another USB external drive.
    I've taken to the Apple Authorized Service where I have confirmed that the problem is due to the cable.
    I have also been learning about the internet, and I was surprised how many people who have had the same problem, and have had to resort to buying a new cable.
    My question is: to what extent is usual that the SATA cable from a computer that has not been manipulated in any way, stop working consistently and across the board?
    In the service I have done a budget of around € 100, as the labor required is 50 €.
    Are these really the official prices that Apple offers for its repairs?
    Thanks.

    For 2009 Mac notebooks it is very common. For other year Mac's it's not as common but can happen. For all other brands of notebook it is very uncommon as most of them do not use any cables to connect the hard drive to the motherboard, or the DVD drive for that matter. They usually slide into a slot that has the connection system, socket, soldered to the motherboards.
    I personally have never had a failure of any of those sockets on any other brand notebook.
    Yeah when you buy into the Apple name, and pay the cost for that name (which is all you are really paying for as the hardware used is the same as any other brand computer), you are also buying into high repair costs.
    That cable costs maybe 2 dollars to make, if that much. But Since it is for an Apple computer the cost to buy it from a parts dealer goes up. As normal people can't buy it from Apple. Apple only sells parts to Apple stores or Apple Authorised Repair Centers.
    And if a place like iFix it has them made, instead of buying from Apple, it cost them more because of the low volume of Apple Mac sales.

  • 15 inch early 2011 Macbook Pro to Mid 2010 27 inch Imac Target Display Mode

    Hi Guys
    I have a early 2011 15" Macbook Pro with thunderpolt port aswell
    as a Mid 2010 27" iMac with MiniDisplay port.
    I am trying to use the iMac as a second screen for my Macbook.
    Both has Mountain Lion on them.
    I have both Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt aswell as miniDisplay to MiniDisplay
    cables.
    I can't get target display mode to work.
    The thunderbolt cable doesn't work at all.
    The MiniDisplay does seeem to work to an extend but not completeley.
    When i plug in the MiniDisplayPort cable to both machines then
    the Macbook pro screen becomes blue which means secondary monitor detected.
    iMac screen becomes blank. Sometimes i have enough time to see in system preferences that
    the Macbook pro actually has a secondary monitor.
    But just as it turned blue on the Macbook pro and black on the iMac. It turns blue again
    and the iMac returns to it's Desktop.
    The exact same happens when i Press Command + F2 on iMac keyboard.
    Any help or ideas?

    I have a 13"macbook air and a Dec. 2012 iMac 27". Out of the blue it stopped working in Target Display Mode. Switching cables doesn't help, and the iMac and MBair are connect to power. I can see the iMac screen in Share Screen mode on the MB air.
    This seems to be an issue, I have encountered eg. in MacRumours:

    I have the same issue with my 2012 27" iMac (3.4, 680MX). When I initiate Target Display mode the iMac goes black and never comes back up. On the laptop I can see the display in Display Preferences, but its as if the backlight doesn't come on in TD mode. (I even did screen sharing into the laptop and can see both displays there.
    Anyway, called Apple and they determined its an issue and I have to send in for a replacement.
    Anyone else with a 2012 iMac (21.5 or 27), can you please test out Target Display mode and let us know if things are working or not?

  • New MacBook Pro Retina with NEC 27 inch monitor

    I've got a new MacBook Pro Retina and I'm trying to use it with my NEC 27 monitor. I connected the two via Apple DVI to Thunderbolt adaptor, but I can only get the monitor to operate at 1500 pixels with the MacBook Pro even though my monitor supports 2560x1440pixels. This is really frustrating since I purchase this lapto to use with my monitor. Any advice?  Thanks, Lucian

    When going to the 2560x1440 ( or 1600) resolution you will need the dual-link DVI adapter (along with a dual link DVI cable, of course).   The single link will work...but at lower resolutions.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 13 vs 15 inch

    Hi,
    I am a high school student and I am going to get a MacBook Pro retina but cannot decide what size is right for me. I need it for typing essays and assignments, Internet surfing, YouTube, facebook, etc. and light video and photot editing. I am either getting a fully upgraded 13 inch (512 SSD, i7, 16GB RAM) or a base model 15 inch. I want it to last at least 3 years. Please help!!!

    If I were you I would go with the upgraded 13" model rather than the base 15". My first MacBook Pro lasted me (and, presumably, the buyer on eBay is still using it) a full 6 years before it could no longer run the latest version of OS X.
    If you have to give up RAM and storage space just to get a 15" screen, don't do it!
    Good luck,
