Thunderbolt Display and MBA Display options
if i make any application ( chrome, spotify etc ) full screen either on MBA display or on the Thunderbolt screen, the other screen goes grey. How can make an application like spotify, chrome full screen on Thunderbolt display but still keep using outlook/mail on the main mba screen ?
Hello, Fran.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
This is the normal functionality of operating systems Mac OS X 10.8 and earlier. However, we recently released a new operating system for free that will allow the use of multiple displays in full screen mode.

Hope this helps,

Mac Mini Server Doesn't Support Duel Thunderbolt Displays!
I purchased a mac mini server with the intent of ultimately running two thunderbolt displays off of it. I pre-ordered in August, waited six weeks for it to arrive and realized that the mac mini server that I had been sent was a lemon. I applied for a replacement, which was built in China and it arrived two weeks later. Everything was going great - I had my mac mini server running a thunderbolt and I was thrilled! Yesterday however, I purchased my second thunderbolt display, connected it and nothing happened. Trouble shooting didn't help. Finally, I called apple and was told that the server version doesn't support duel thunderbolt displays! I had read all of the technical specifications and there was no mention (at that time) that the server couldn't support duel displays. I am now in the process of returning my mac mini server in exchange for a custom build mac mini with upgraded 2.7 GHz i7 processors and 8GB RAM. I'm really disappointed to have to be going through all of these extra steps just to realize the system that I imagined early on. I checked the Apple Thunderbolt display options page at apple and they have now posted that the server doesn't support duel displays (but that informaiton definitely was not there when I first read it!). Why would the server version not support duel displays? To me, it doesn't make any sense. What are your thoughts?
It doesn't support dual TB displays because it uses the integrated
Intel graphics HD 3000. Only discrete graphics cards can handle
dual TB displays. The integrated graphics chip just cant handle
the load.
As for the logic of it, as servers, they are usually single display
and even more often are run headless and managed remotely.
It is marketed as a server and thus the logic. -
I am using duel thunderbolt displays with a MacBook Pro. I only have the option to have sound come from one or the other. Has anyone thought of making the left channel come from both speakers on the left Monitor and the same of the right? If yes, how is that done? The MacBook Pro could even be a center channel if configured in that order.
See the following thread on the same topic:
2 Thunderbolt displays MBP = sound coming from both displays? -
New MBA 11" and Thunderbolt display - will the cords reach?
If I buy the new 11" MBA, will the cords from the Thunderbolt display reach??? I noticed that the MBA has power on one side and the Thunderbolt port on the other.
I am concerned that the cords won't reach both.i think his question refers to the cable that is part of the Thunderbolt display. As I recall it, one physical combined cable from the back of the Thunderbolt display diverges into separate power (MagSafe 1) and Thunderbolt connectors. It would be an easy connection if both the MagSafe2 on the 11" MBA and the Thunderbolt port were on the same end. I don't remember if the MagSafe and Thunderbolt ports were on the same side of the previous generation MBA or if the new MBA has changed that.

HT4885 how do i use a macbookpro with a thunderbolt display and have an external projector
I bought the latest macbook pro with a 500 gig solid state drive 8 gig ram etc and a thunderbolt display, is use it with lappy lid down and external key board and mouse, so like an imac or tower. i want to add a matrox 3 display splitter in line to have 1-3 projectors for film and vj etc.
i can add it straight out of the lappy as one would expect, but now i find after vast expense i can only add another thuderbolt display out of the display port on the thunderbolt display!.
This is such a scam from mac.......what are they playing with. Is there any good solutions out there. I spend alot of money and can cant use projection and a thunderbolt display at same time......very disapointed on this one.....its a postitive backward progression on there part.....
its fine on the road, but doing mxed media presentaions from my work place is now not possible with my lovely big display as well.
there must be a away round this.....Am i being dumb.
thanks for any help in advance.
cheersHere's what apple documents on the limitiations of chaining with TB displays:

Macbook pro 17 inch primo 2011 and thunderbolt display crashes
I have a Macbook pro 17 inch primo 2011 and thunderbolt display which has recently started to crash.
Only modifications I have doen lately is I swapped the CD/DVD drive for a harddrive and put in 16 GB of ram
but it has been running for more than a month with these hardware additions without problems.
Today my Macbook has started to crash frequently within 10 min to 1 hour after plugging in my thunderbolt display.
I tried to check CPU heat, change RAM but it keps crashing.
When it crashes it either gives me a blue screen, a black screen or a distorts everythings and freeze up.
When rebooting I have to press Command-Option-P-R to clear NVRAM / PRAM.
I found a few support threads from people having similar problems so I started to disconnect the thunderbolt display
and without plugging it in my laptop works fine.
I have done a SMC reset also but that has not resolved my issue.
Below is the crash report and if anybody has any suggestions what to do to resolve this please let me know
My thunderbolt display was purchased in late 2011
If this is not solveable what options do I have ?
Thanks !

FireWire Device: My Book 111D, WD, 800mbit_speedThe other day I got the blue screen, the fan going on high, and then when I disconnect my thunderbolt connection from my macbook pro - i get a shutdown.
Today I got flickering followed by the fan on high and then again I disconneced my thunderbolt cable and after a minute or two a shudown.
This never happened before. Actually I was suprised to hear about a firmware update for flickering since that's never happened to me but since updating I now get the flicker.
Any ideas?? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my work labtop. -
I need to work on Adobe Premiere on my 2013 Mac Book Pro (with thunderbolt port) and display it on my 2010 iMac (with Mini DisplayPort) using Target Display Mode (TDM). I tried using a thunderbolt cable plus Option F2, but it didn't work. Will a Mini Display cable work? Any other suggestions?

Sound Switches Between Thunderbolt Display and MacBook Pro
I have an Apple Thunderbolt display and MacBook Pro set-up with dual screens. I have an iPhone plugged into a dock that runs to the display. When I have music playing out of the display and I disconnect my iPhone, it switches the sound to the MacBook Pro.
1. How do I stop this from happening?
2. If I can't stop it from happening, how do I move the sound from the MacBook Pro back to the display?
There doesn't seem to be any options within Preferences/Sound to change it back.
Thank you.I've a Spyder4Elite that I use on both my Thunderbolt Display and on my MBP - and, while both are calibrated, they don't - and cannot - 'match' one another, no matter how hard I try.
I suspect that you're running up against the same wall? Different technologies in different displays. I doubt that you'll ever get a perfect match: mine are just 'good enough'.

MacBook Pro 13" and Thunderbolt Display Question
I am considering purchasing a 13" MacBook Pro to use with the Thunderbolt display. I do a fair amount of photoshop work and am concerned that the lack of a dedicated video card and the dual-core as opposed to quad core in the 15" will be a limiting factor. I would be purchasing the i7 with 8GB of ram in the 13". Has anyone used this combination (Thunderbolt and i7 13" Pro) for Photoshop, and how has it performed?
Thanks!Thank you for your response, I will definitely way that option more heavily. I was hoping to be able to accommodate the 13" form factor. As a student I bring my computer everywhere so the smaller size would have been nice.
I
f I may waste a tad more of your time, is the reason behind the GPU and quad core because of photoshop or the 27" monitor in general? The only reason I ask is that I am only a casual photoshop user so that alone may not sway me, but if powering the thunderbolt display is of a concern for the lesser device then the decision becomes much easier.
Sorry to ask so many questions, I know a decent about computers but I am not too familiar with the thunderbolt adaptor and as such am not sure how that interacts with the GPU and such.
Thanks again! -
Windows 7 and Apple Thunderbolt Display
I'm having difficulties getting the 27" Apple Thunderbolt to work reliably with my 13.3 MPPr using Win7 and Bootcamp. All the Bootcamp drivers are the latest, and the display works just fine using OSX 10.8. When booting into Win7, the external display is dark, but audio, USB, and ethernet seem to work just fine..just no video. Has anyone found a work around for this.. It's getting really frustrating.

Thunderbolt problems with Windows 8
TIP: Fix for Thunderbolt problem with Windows 8 in Boot Camp
Boot Camp users who updated Windows 7 to Windows 8 may find that a Mac booted with Windows 8 does not recognize Thunderbolt . According to a new Apple tech article, the problem is an incompatibility with the Windows 8 Fast Boot feature (also called Fast Startup). The workaround is to disable Fast Boot using the Windows Control Panel.
Here's how:
In Windows 8, open the Control Panel. (You can move the mouse to the upper-right corner to activate the Charms bar, click the Settings icon, and then select Control Panel.)
Select Hardware and Sound.
Under Power Options, choose Change What the Power Buttons Do.
Under Shutdown Settings, uncheck the Turn On Fast Startup. Checkbox.
Click Save and then restart the Mac back into Windows.
After restart, Windows 8 will recognize Thunderbolt devices attached to the Mac. -
MBA thunderbolt wired to ethernet through a Thunderbolt display
With an MBA thunderbolt wired to ethernet through a Thunderbolt display, all is fine running OSX Lion. But when running BootCamp Windows 7, I can't access my network (Access to ethernet via adapter USB is OK).
BootCamp has installed a driver Marvell (Yukonx64) Net 10.51.1.3
Need another driver ? Something to activate ?

While they candidly told me it is possible the ClamXAV I have running in my MBP could be the cause of it that sometimes an anti-virus program may automatically set security levels so high that most connections are not permitted
That is simply not possible. ClamXav makes no changes what-so-ever to any security settings. The app itself doesn't even run until you tell it to. If you have the web site version, then you can optionally setup ClamXav Sentry to watch specific directories (folders) but all it does is scan every new or modified file in that directory. There seems to be no way it could possibly interfere with you network connectivity, Thunderbolt or otherwise. -
Hi, I am using a 2011 iMac and my thunderbolt display arrived today.
I use bootcamp (win7) and the display works fine on start up, 2 issues though:
1. Keyboard brightness controls affect the main display but do not not change the thunderbolt display.
2. After the computer goes to sleep, apon waking the thunderbolt display stays off.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers!
SamI have no idea about changing from Helpful to Correct. (but feel free to mark this one as correct).
Fixed in the next update in what way? So that the brightness buttons control both at the same time? Don't hold your breath waiting for it. This has been an issue with all the displays for a long time and I doubt this will happen. The problem is that the screens can get out of sync (like if you enable the option to automatically adjust based on the room brightness) so that the brightness wouldn't be the same between them. Who know, perhaps they will come up with this fix and allow them to sync properly.
I don't know of a Windows program but on OSX, I use ControllerMate to do this for me. CM allows you to customize all your buttons to do different (or additional) things. In my situation, I have the external keyboard attached to a 27" Cinema Display. When I press the brightness keys on the external, OSX detects the keys and adjusts only the CD brightness. However, CM is also monitoring the keys and when I use them, it emulates the same brightness keys being pressed on the laptop keyboard. This allows me to control the brightness on both at the same time. If needed, I can press the brightness keys on the laptop and adjust that screen seperately because I haven't programmed CM to monitor those keys. -
Connecting network cable to Thunderbolt display causes MBA to crash
When plugging my MBA into my Thunderbolt screen I noticed that it often causes my MBA to crash - very frustrating! I have since discovered that this only happens when my wired network lead is connected to the Thunderbolt display. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have checked the firmware for the monitor and it is apparently up to date. I would like to be able to use the wired network through the connection on the back of the Thunderbolt screen so it really is quite inconvenient.
Thanks for any help/advice.

Blue Screen on MBA with Thunderbolt Display after wake-up
I'm running a MBA (summer 2012, OSX 10.8.3) with a Thunderbolt display.
Very often after wake-up, I have a blue screen on the built-in monitor while the external display shows the login-screen. The MBA is frozen and I have to enforce a restart.
Any ideas to resolve the problem much appreciated.ARD works only across a network, not via Target Display Mode. Your MBA will need to be connected to and active on your local network to be able to take control of your MBA from your MBP. I'm not certain if you can take control of a Mac connected via Target Display Mode, though I do know that applications on the system keep running, so it may be possible.
Note, though, that you don't need ARD to accomplish this assuming it is possible. The screen sharing feature built into OS X allows you to control on Mac from another with no extra software required.
