Thunderbolt Display Ethernet Connection

Hi
I notice that the Thunderbolt display has an Ethernet connection - so does this mean that I could plug my MacBook Air into it and then connect the MBA to my network via the Thunderbolt connection?
Many thanks

Yes, the concept of Thunderbolt is to reduce the number of cables connected directly to your Mac. For the MBA, you will only need to connect the Magsafe and the Thunderbolt cable and nothing else. All other connections can be made at the back of the display or by daisy-chaining.

  • How do I display ethernet connection is being used rather than WI-FI connection in the menu bar/elsewhere?

I have a new 13" retina MacBook Pro - I have wi-fi connection but also a thunderbolt/ethernet adapter that allows me to connect to my network
Sometimes, the ethernet connection does not connect and I do not notice for a while (possibly a dodgy TP-LINK plug adapter thingy)
My question is - how can I display that I am connected/using the ethernet connection rather than the wi-fi? The wi-fi symbol stays in the menu bar but it would be nice to see that I am using the ethernet connection instead
    Many thanks
    Mike

I don't think you can do that. You can only display the WiFi connection on the menu bar.

  • Thunderbolt Display Ethernet

    Quick question, hopefully easy solution.
When I plug my TB Displays into my macbook pro, of which one of the TB displays has an ethernet cable connected from it to my airport base station, is there any way to automate it switching to using ethernet instead of wifi?  Currently, it continues to use the wifi connection unless I turn wifi off from the menubar - that's when the ethernet will kick in.  Often I forget, and only notice when files are transferring from my server considerably slower.
    Thanks, Ron

Easy, just go to Network Preferences whist connected via Display Ethernet and click the small triangle at the bottom, and select 'Set Service Order…' then drag the Display Ethernet to the top.
Now when you're plugged in via your TB screen, it will pick Ethernet first, and will switch to Wi-Fi when on the road.
Bear in mind, your Wi-Fi will still be connected but for the most part will be ignored as the Mac will use the Ethernet first and only use Wi-Fi if you have a different route table setup, which is unlikley given that you are plugged in directly to the Airport

  • Ethernet connection through thunderbolt cable

    Hi
I've got a 27" Thunderbolt display where my mac mini is connected. In the back of the mini i've plugged the ethernet LAN cable in.
Once in a while I want to dock my Macbook Retina to the display and get 1) Bigger screen and 2) LAN connectivity
    My questions:
    1) If only connecting my macbook to the display via thunderbolt - can I get the ethernet connectivity which sits in the mac mini. Or do I have to connect with a separate Thunderbolt-LAN adaptor (i.e meaning two cables)
    2) Does a thunderbolt cable exist with magsafe 2 (i.e similar to the cable that is in the display)
    Kind regards
    Frank, Denmark

    1) If you want to dock your MBPr, it would be best to have the Display Ethernet connected;
    2) ALL Thunderbolt Displays shipping after the Retina model came out were supposed to come with a MagSafe>MagSafe 2 adapter. If yours didn't, you can buy one for $10 or just go to your local Apple Store or an AASP and see if they will give you one.

  • Thunderbolt Display Firmware 1.2 / 10.10.1 Update device connected but no display

I looked through a lot of the Thunderbolt Display Firmware 1.2 posts about the display not functioning but never saw one with circumstances quite like mine. In my case, I updated the firmware and the display continued working until I had to reboot for the 10.10.1 system update. After the reboot, my display stopped displaying.
The display wasn't completely non-functional. The symptoms I saw were:
The Displays system preference only showed one display available (my rMBP)
The System Report under About This Mac showed my Thunderbolt Display was connected
The keyboard connected through the Thunderbolt Display worked properly
Just no display at all. First I tried a simple reboot with no success. Then I tried a PRAM reset (3x) again with no success. Finally I disconnected all Thunderbolt connections from my rMBP and did an SMC reset. After booting back up I reconnected the display and boom back in business!
    Hope this helps someone.

    Solution:
As I proofread my post, I realized I did not note the part about the "built-in" cable and only focused on the "connected directly" part of the error.
Using the built-in Thunderbolt cable I was able to successfully install the firmware.
If anyone else makes this dumb mistake, maybe this post will help you not feel too bad!

  • Is there a way to disable the Thunderbolt Display?

    Hey Guys,
I recently got a Thunderbolt Display and connected it up to my iMac (i bought the iMac in Jan 2013) and everything is working just as perfect as i thought it would apart from one thing.
I have had a search around to see if there is any way to turn off the Thunderbolt display without having to keep pulling out the Thunderbolt Cable, as you can imagine having to do this each time means that i need to re-arrange all my windows when i plug the display back in. I have tried to use SwitchResX but when disabling the thunderbolt display it turns off and then instantly turns back on.
Does anyone know if there is an App or something that can be installed to perhaps put the screen into sleep mode without disconnecting? I have also looked at the screen saver hot corners as someone on the  community mentioned that but this never worked either.
    Cheers
    Michael

I am looking for the same solution! Had the same experience with SwitchResX.
    Please, people, help us!

  • Blurry fonts thunderbolt display on rmbp

I have a thunderbolt display 27" connected to a rmbp, the fonts on the thunderbolt display look awfully bad? What to do?
    I tried switching smoothing on/off
I tried defaults via terminal with different smoothing settings
I tried the RGB fixed they have for other external displays
    Nothing helps...

I've asked the Hosts to move your message to the Thunderbolt Display forum -> https://discussions.apple.com/community/peripherals/thunderbolt_display?view=dis cussions&start=0.
I didn't think that what you describe would work but there was a post there recently, answered by the most knowledgeable TB Display guru, that seemed to indicate that what you propose would work. Personally, I don't know as I've only one TB Display and no other displays save that on my MacBook Pro.
But doesn't your model have two TB ports? Couldn't you use one each for each display? Or am I missing something?
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Thunderbolt Display "dead" after firmware upgrade to Version 1.2

    Hi,
I just run the Thunderbolt F/W update to 1.2 as offered by the AppStore Update. I have a 2014 MacPro with 2 Displays connected. In good faith I just confirmed to apply the update without much reading the fine print. The F/W update brought the system to a complete standstill. After 2 hours of waiting in the boot screen, I rebooted the system manually (5 secs power button). One of the Thunderbolt displays first just flickered, then decided to completely die. The System report says: unknown device in the Thunderbolt section. The 2nd display hasn't been updated during this procedure.
How can the F/W of the 'dead' display be re-installed? I also tried to connect it to a MacBook pro. Same result. The display is entirely black.
Any help or suggestion is much appreciated. Thanks!

Put me on the list as well.
I've had this TB display for two years and have had no issue with it. Clicked OK on the firmware prompt and now I have a $1000 paperweight/laptop charger.
    What I have tried:
Reset SMC and NVRAM on my MBP.
Unplugged the display from power and all peripherals and let it sit for ~24 hours before trying again.
Downloaded the firmware installer from Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update v1.2. It tells me that no thunderbolt display is connected.
So far nothing has produced a result.
System report shows an unknown device on the TB port.
A used logic board for the display is around USD$220 on ebay.
I really wish I had not attempted to install the firmware now.

  • How can i attach a dvi output device to a thunderbolt display

how Can a Thunderbolt display be connected to a DVI output device?

  • Thunderbolt Display to HDTV

I am working with a collegue who is using a TB docking station with his MBA13.  The docking station only has 2 TB ports, one which must be used to connect to the MBA13.  I had hoped to use the MDP to HDMI adapter to plug a HDTV to the TB display for use of video conferencing, with no success.
Is this a limitation of the TB display to not allow for MDP cables and adapters in the daisy chain?  Is there a docking station that has both HDMI and 2 TB ports, or 3 TB ports total that you've found?
    Thank you in advance!

Mini DisplayPort devices do not work plugged directly into the Thunderbolt port on the back of the Thunderbolt display, but will work if there is a Thunderbolt device (with two Thunderbolt ports) between the Thunderbolt display and the Mini DisplayPort device.
Connect the Thunderbolt display directly to the MacBook Air.  Connect one port of the docking station to the Thunderbolt port on the back of the Thunderbolt display.  Connect the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to the other port on the docking station.

  • Can I use a thunderbolt display with an hdmi converter to a PC?

I bought a Thunderbolt display, and have seen a ThunderBolt/MiniDisplay Port to hdmi converter.
Is it possible to use a ThunderBolt display as PC display if I use this converter?
    thanks!

Probably not.  Unlikely.  The ThunderBolt/MiniDisplay Port-to-hdmi converters are intended for connecting the thunderbolt port on an Mac to an HDMI input on a display or TV.  You can't assume these converters work backwards and without knowing exactly what converter you are talking about, and what video out your pc has ... it's impossible to say.
I would add that one should think long & hard about risking a $1000 Apple thunderbolt display by connecting it to something it wasn't designed for.

  • Will my Mac automatically stop using wifi when connected to an Ethernet enabled thunderbolt display?

Will my 2012 Macbook pro retina  automatically stop using wifi when connected to an Ethernet enabled thunderbolt display?

    Depends.
If you go in System Preferences / Network, you will see a list of all the network interfaces your current configuration has. If you click on the gear icon next to the minus sign, the drop menu will offer "Set Service Order...". There you can prioritize the order of use: Ethernet above Wi-Fi and wireless will be ignored if Ethernet is available.
Note that the Wi-Fi card will remain active and associated with an access point nonetheless. It just won't be used for communications by the OS and apps.

  • How to connect the macbook with thunderbolt display 27" to TV with RGB port?

    Hi,
I have the following equipments in hands:
    1. Macbook PRO 15 inch with 1 thunderbolt port, OS is Mavericks 10.9.2
    2. Apple Thunderbolt display 27" identical to this : http://www.apple.com/displays/
    3. A Samsung TV with RGB port, & HDMI port.
I want all these displays ( macbook, Apple thunderbolt display & the Samsung Tv) connected at the same time, I had a trial to connect them using a minidispaly adapter to RGB port & HDMI port  in the TV but it didnt worked.
    Please help!
    Thank you.

The Thunderbolt dock adds extra ports:
HDMI (up to 2560x1600 with the Elgato, 1920 x 1200 with the CalDigit)
    3 USB 3
    Ethernet
    Audio in
    Audio out
You could also use a Belkin Thunderbolt dock.
    <http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F4U055/>
It includes a FireWire port, but no HDMI port, so would need a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (1920 x 1200 max) for the TV.  This would use the second Thunderbolt port, so the Belkin dock has to be used with the port on the back of the Thunderbolt display, not between the computer and display.
If you don't need the extra ports, use a Thunderbolt hard drive (with two Thunderbolt ports)
    <http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/backup-plus-desk -mac-thunderbolt/>
This can be your Time Machine drive.  Connect the Thunderbolt display to the computer, one port of the drive to the port on the back of the display, and a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to the second Thunderbolt port on the drive.
You will have three displays with differing resolutions, so mirroring is not going to fill each screen at full resolution.

  • The ethernet port on the thunderbolt display is not working

The ethernet is working when the cable is connected directly to my mac laptop but when connected the thunderbolt display there is no connection.  Is there some type of set up for the ethernet connection or can this port just be broken?
    Thanks for the help!

Afterthought on an older post: it isn't immediately clear that the Ethernet port on the Thunderbolt Display works through the "Display Ethernet" interface, rather than through the "Thunderbolt Ethernet" interface. The latter was already present in the list of network interfaces in Network Preferences, while the former had to be added via the + button --- at least that was the case when I installed the TB display to work with my 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina this week.
The AppleCare rep didn't know the difference either and agreed with me that it was puzzling that using the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter on the Thunderbolt port of the display did work, wheras using the Ethernet port directly didn't (even though there were lights flashing on the Ethernet port of that other computer I tried to connect to in Internet Sharing mode). Close reading of the above posts made me go look for that mysterious "Display Ethernet" interface...  thank you Clinton!
