Thunderbolt Display Fan Noise Yes or NO?

I have a TBD connected to my 17" late 2011 MBP.  MY TBD does get warm.  Typically if I am facing the display the left side at the underside bottom portion of the bezel gets warm, not overly hot but warm.  The right underside bottom portion stays very cool.  I assuem that the difference in temp is due to the power supply being located on the left side (facing the montior) but my QUESTIONS IS: I don't hear the internal fan at all.  I assume the fan is working but I have yet to hear it turn on or draw any attention to itself, shoudl I be concerned?
Thanks.

I have Hardware Monitor as well and I don't see that setting either for the Monitors.  Once again thanks for the help.  If you know where within Hardware Monitor I should look that would be great.

  • Thunderbolt Display Fan Noise

Today i bought a new 27" Thunderbolt Display to use with my 15" MBP but i have notice a disturbing fan noise for the first 10 to 15 mins when i plugged it in... I found this thread here (27" Thunderbolt Display Fan noise), i downloaded the firmware v1.1 but it says your thunderbolt doesn't need it.
Is there any other firmware i should install? or any other software? What is the other one that guy installed, any clue?
    Please advice!

  • My Thunderbolt display fan running unnecessarily

For the last 6+ months, I have used the MBP retina (Yosemite 10.10.1) connected via lightning cable to a 21" Thunderbolt display.  My problem is that I have the fan running first thing in the morning when booting the MBP, as well as sporadically through the day.  Placing my hand on various parts of the display shows it to be quite cool, while the fan is on (and even when the fan is not on).  Nevertheless, the fan kicks-in regardless of:
    brightness set to 50% or set to 100%;
    use of 6 alternative spaces (of video desktop) or 1;
CPU processing at 50% idle or at 95% idle.
It is a complete mystery why the fan has to come on AT ALL.  I've been through the following display-related Firmware updates, but each exhibits the same issues.:
    Thunderbolt Display (September):
      Firmware Version: 22.1
      Port:
      Status: Device connected
      Link Status: 0x2
      Port Micro Firmware Version: 2.1.3
      Cable Firmware Version: 0.1.18

      Device ID: 0x8002
      Device Revision: 0x1

      Route String: 1
      Firmware Version: 22.2
      Port:
      Status: Device connected
      Link Status: 0x2
      Port Micro Firmware Version: 0.0.21

      Port:
      Status: No device connected
      Link Status: 0x7
      Port Micro Firmware Version: 0.0.21
    Any ideas?

TBD fans are on all the time.  That is be design.  Don't worry unless it is making some strange noises.  I assume you mean 27" display and not 21?

  • Thunderbolt Display fan runs continuously in sleep mode

    Hello,
I have a new Thunderbolt display and new Macbook Pro 15" just setup.
I have been running in clamshell mode without any problems, but when I put the Macbook to sleep, the fan inside the Thunderbolt Display starts running quite loudly. When entering sleep, the display goes black and seems to be off, but after a few seconds the fan starts up and I can feel a stream of air coming out from under the display (the screen stays black).
The Macbook itself seems to be sleeping ok (the led on the side slowly flashes).
The fan in the display seems to run continuously at high speed: I left it in sleep overnight, and the fan was still running in the morning.
When I wake up the Macbook, the screen turns on and then the fan cuts back to normal (quiet) levels.
The various Thunderbolt software updates were all installed OK yesterday but didn't make any difference (the problem was there before and after installation).
(I also noticed that if I just plug in the power to the display, without the macbook cables connected, the fan will also run at high speed and never turn off, thought the screen itself seems to be off.)
Anyone else experiencing this or have any ideas how I can fix it?
    Regards,
    Ben

I hope you guys can get Apple to replace the display.
I have now received my replacement display and it works fine. No fan when the computer is sleeping or when the TB cable is disconnected.
If you are going to pick up a replacement screen in a store (or if you are buying a new one), I'd suggest you ask them to unpack it and plug it in while you are still in the store.  This particular problem seems to be apparent within about 30 seconds of the power being plugged in (make sure no computer is connected to the Thunderbolt port).
The store is often noisy and it may be difficult to hear the fan. So to test it, hold your hand under the bottom edge on the left side of the display (as you face the front of the screen) and see if you can feel the air stream from the fan (you will need them to peel back the plastic wrapping from that edge first, otherwise the vent is blocked). The fan does not turn on straight away when you plug in. I found it can take 30 seconds or so to start up.  With the faulty display, the blast of air is quite obvious to feel.
I bought another Thunderbolt display recently (at an authorised dealer, not an Apple Store) and made sure that they let me do this check before accepting it. Fortunately it was completely silent and no fan started running when the power was plugged in. They initially thought I wanted to check the screen itself, so at first they had it plugged in to a Macbook to show something on the screen, and they thought it was odd I wanted to check the display without anything connected - they hadn't heard of this fan problem before.
Good luck getting this sorted out!

  • Thunderbolt display emitting noise.

My Thunderbolt display continues to emit a noise.  I first posted about this back in Februrary:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21260561#21260561
Now, it's much worse.  It makes the sound no matter whether the display is actually plugged in or the level of brightness, as long as I use the power from the Thunderbolt display it makes the noise, albeit softly.  When I plug the Thunderbolt display in as a second monitor, it gets REALLY loud - to the point where I cannot use the monitor any longer.
There were some weird quirks about when it make the noise (for instance, I could unplug the power from the Thunderbolt to the MBP but left the TB connector in), but now it doesn't seem to matter as long as there is some type of connect from the MBP to the TB display it will make the noise.
It's unfortunate that Apple does not stand behind their products.  I had 2 non-Apple monitors that I paid $200 each in 2001 and they lasted until 2013 when I finally took them to be recycled (even though they still worked).  Too bad Apple seems to want to boost revenue by making people pay for poorly build products instead of building something of quality that will last longer than 1.5 years.  I switched to Apple because I thought they were better, unfortunately I'm learning otherwise.
Someone let me know if Apple every decides to fix the problem it created...

Possible Solution for under $2.00:  Plug the display into one of those ground eliminating plugs that allow you to plug grounded cords into old style two prong receptacles.
I took my display to the Apple Store.  They could not reproduce the sound, so they were unable to do anything to fix it.  While the Thunderbolt display was on vacation at the Apple Store, I thought more about what MAD SCI described as the possible source of the problem ["THAT MEANs that all these devices are now connected. Problem being is that the audio is not protected from ground noise…"].  The fact that the display worked fine at the Apple Store, lead me to think the problem was with the electricity in my office, since it is in a historic building in an old downtown area.  I suspect my electricity may have ground noise since I have to plug everything (Wi-Fi modems, phone modem, external network drives, copier, printer, lamps, etc.) into the same circuit.
When I got my display back I decided to try plugging the display's power cord into one of those little plugs that converts a three prong into a 2 prong, by eliminating the ground prong.  I plugged the display into the ground-eliminating plug, then into the surge protector.  While I confess it has only been a few days that the display has been functioning under these conditions, there is no hiss sound.  Last time I thought I found a solution, I performed experiments to recreate the hiss and it never went away; so this time I have decided to be superstitious rather than scientific.  So you should take this report as an anecdote only.
Additionally, I do not recommend this solution, because eliminating the ground may cause problems.  [As described by MAD SCI: "It is only protection against lightening really. So if you wonder why apple has done this and not fixed it yet, it’s more political than you think…."] With this in mind, I believe there is a risk the described fix could turn your display into a useless piece of junk, if there was a power surge from a lightening strike that was not eliminated by the expensive surge protector it is probably plugged into. Of course, since my noise was so loud, the display was already a useless piece of junk (until I eliminated the hiss with this "kludgy" fix), I figure I have nothing to loose.

  • 27" TB  display fan noise

The display gets more and more noisy, believe it comes from the fan inside, any idea to fix it?

You can remove the front glass (held on with magnets) and see if you can notice anything.  You can go to the ifixit site and they show you the display broken down.  Perhaps it needs cleaning or some part is loose.

  • TA25225 Display Flickers in my 21" Imac Intel. This happened after the fan noise in my machine. I also reported the problem and gave to the service centre, but the problem still persist. Please help. I purchased it 3 - 4 weeks ago

    Hello,
I purchased my imac intel 21" 3-4 weeks ago and in the 2nd week i faced an issue with the machine. When i switched on in, there was a fan noise and a white screen. The machine had hanged. I reported the problem and gave to the service centre. After testing for a week, they said that there is no problem with the imac. Again i faced the same problem after receiving it from the service centre. They again tested the machine for 3-4 days and reported as no problem with the machine. Couple of days back, I received the machine from the service centre, and on the same day when i switched it on, there are flickers in the display. Please help me solve the issue. I am from India. The service here is very bad.
    Hope for a resolution
    Thanks

    Hello RedDevil07
Yes I agree with seventy one. It's common sense to do this, especially now. I would also contact AppleCare and report this issue with them, it will get documented and you will have a caseID that you can refer to when talking to them in the future should this issue go one.
Be polite with AppleCare and your AASP. Hopefully everyone is being honest and trying to help you and not what might appear to be the opposite.
Patience is a virtue, but I thoroughly understand your frustration.
Let us know how it goes, we are here to help in whatever way we can.
I encourage you to contact AppleCare to report this experience and get their recommendations. There is an expectation that you should have that AppleCare is there to help you as a customer. I am sure they will too!

  • When I connect my Macbook Air to the thunderbolt display the fans run constantly

I dont understand.... but the fans seem to run at full speed the entire time I'm connected to the the thunderbolt display.
My cpu usage is blow 10% and and the cpu temp from istat is showng as 72
I understand the fans kicking in once in a while but these run for hours and hours at full speed (6496 rpm)
    Anyone else having this problem?

I have the same issue. I've had the MBA for a couple months now and haven't had the fan kick up hardly at all. A few minutes after it's connnected to my new T'bolt display though it kicks in and stays on. I've updated firmware once but there may be others and it hasn't helped.
Mine is in the closed position in a Book Arc and I've only got Chrome open for browsing so far.

I am using duel thunderbolt displays with a MacBook Pro. I only have the option to have sound come from one or the other. Has anyone thought of making the left channel come from both speakers on the left Monitor and the same of the right? If yes, how is that done? The MacBook Pro could even be a center channel if configured in that order.

  • My thunderbolt display makes a noise when plugged into my macbook pro laptop

my thunderbolt display makes a noise when plugged into my macbook pro laptop. It sounds like an electronic noise which doesn't come through the speakers. Any advice how to eliminate this?

Could be a poor ground.  Try plugging the monitor directly into the wall (no power strip) and see what happens.

  • Real time fan speed and temperature of the Thunderbolt Display

Is there software program that allows you to know the real time speed of the itnernal fan of the Thunderbolt display. Also I would like to monitor the internal temp of the TBD.  I have Istat which allows me to do both but only for my MBPro not my montior.
    Thanks.

Have you ever cleaned you machine? Since it's an iSight (which is actually 3rd generation, Ambient Light is the 2nd, Rev A the 1st), you can't open it but you can vacuum the air vents, which might help.

  • IMac G5 bootup with fan noise but no display

Hi all the experts out there,
I'm new to iMac and need help to resolve the following issues:
    1) My iMac went on sleep mode and follow by a big fan noise.
    2) Able to power down but when I press the power button follow by the Command, Option, P and R keys, no response from the iMac (no screen display but power indicator is lighted)
    3) Anyway to eject the Disc manually from the slot? By pressing the eject key from the keyboard does not eject my CD. I'm trying to eject the music CD from the slot, so that I can put in the system disc to try on other mode of recovery.
    Any help is welcome.

  • Thunderbolt display noise

I've recently noticed my display making noise when I have it on. It sounds similar to a truck idling, but is not very loud. After awhile the sound seems to disappear. (Either that or I just get used to it) I'm thinking it might be the fan. It has gotten colder where I live and I was wondering if that could account for the noise (metal contracting and expanding).
My display is connected to my macbook pro.

Some of the earlier displays had some fan noise and were fixed with the latest firmware update.  Be sure your display is up to date.  However, you could still have a noisey fan that may need repair or perhaps cleaning.

  • Random sound/noise coming from bottom left of thunderbolt display?

    Hey everyone,
I bought my Thunderbolt display in September 2012 and it worked well until a month ago. The screen started turning off, and USB and Ethernport ports would stop working from time to time. I took it into Apple and they gave me a new display after being unable to fix the problem.
But now I have a new issue. There is a sound that comes from the display at random times. It sounds close to, but not exactly, like the sound a Mac makes when moving an item to the trash can. It appears to be comming from the bottom left side of the display.
I've tried raising and lowering the volume, but that didn't have any effect (sounds the same no mater where the volume is). Even when the display volume is muted, or even sound output is sent to my USB DAC, the display still makes this noise. It can happen once every 30 seconds, or once every 30 minutes. There's no consistancy as to when it ocures.
I tried connecting my Fiance's MacBook air to my display thinking it may be my Macbook Pro, but the noise still occured.
I've tried connecting the display power to different outlets and different surge protectors, including a Sine Wave UPS, but neither helped.
This has been an issue with 2 brand new displays Apple gave me. I'm still using the second display but getting ready to return it for a third. But before I do, I wanted to post a question to see if someone had any other idea on what it could be and to see if this is something I could fix myself.
It appears to be hardware related, and from my testing it seems to be an issue with the current new Thunderbolt Displays.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

I have a similar issue. Both output and input sounds are setup to come out of a USB speaker system I have attched to the display USB ports. However when emptying the trash, the sound Macs make when doing so comes out of the display speakers. No options for that sound are available. Very odd. There does not seem to be a relation between the volume control either and the volume of the display, the display is loud, even when my mac system voulme is low.

  • Fan on full speed, with thunderbolt display connected

    Hi,
I have a brand new late 2011 15" mb pro. All standard, besides a SSD disk. I also bought a thunderbolt dispay, and it works great. The only thing is that the macbook fan start going on full speed in a few minutes, and will keep doing even if I don't run any programs at all.
Does it really consume so much power to run this thunderbolt display that the macbook needs to be at maximum all the time?
When I disconnect the macbook and run it stand alone, I don't have this problem.

You may likely have some other problem. Do this to start:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
