Thunderbolt Display fan runs continuously in sleep mode

Hello,
I have a new Thunderbolt display and new Macbook Pro 15" just setup.
I have been running in clamshell mode without any problems, but when I put the Macbook to sleep, the fan inside the Thunderbolt Display starts running quite loudly. When entering sleep, the display goes black and seems to be off, but after a few seconds the fan starts up and I can feel a stream of air coming out from under the display (the screen stays black).
The Macbook itself seems to be sleeping ok (the led on the side slowly flashes).
The fan in the display seems to run continuously at high speed: I left it in sleep overnight, and the fan was still running in the morning.
When I wake up the Macbook, the screen turns on and then the fan cuts back to normal (quiet) levels.
The various Thunderbolt software updates were all installed OK yesterday but didn't make any difference (the problem was there before and after installation).
(I also noticed that if I just plug in the power to the display, without the macbook cables connected, the fan will also run at high speed and never turn off, thought the screen itself seems to be off.)
Anyone else experiencing this or have any ideas how I can fix it?
Regards,
Ben

I hope you guys can get Apple to replace the display.
I have now received my replacement display and it works fine. No fan when the computer is sleeping or when the TB cable is disconnected.
If you are going to pick up a replacement screen in a store (or if you are buying a new one), I'd suggest you ask them to unpack it and plug it in while you are still in the store.  This particular problem seems to be apparent within about 30 seconds of the power being plugged in (make sure no computer is connected to the Thunderbolt port).
The store is often noisy and it may be difficult to hear the fan. So to test it, hold your hand under the bottom edge on the left side of the display (as you face the front of the screen) and see if you can feel the air stream from the fan (you will need them to peel back the plastic wrapping from that edge first, otherwise the vent is blocked). The fan does not turn on straight away when you plug in. I found it can take 30 seconds or so to start up.  With the faulty display, the blast of air is quite obvious to feel.
I bought another Thunderbolt display recently (at an authorised dealer, not an Apple Store) and made sure that they let me do this check before accepting it. Fortunately it was completely silent and no fan started running when the power was plugged in. They initially thought I wanted to check the screen itself, so at first they had it plugged in to a Macbook to show something on the screen, and they thought it was odd I wanted to check the display without anything connected - they hadn't heard of this fan problem before.
Good luck getting this sorted out!

  • My Thunderbolt display fan running unnecessarily

For the last 6+ months, I have used the MBP retina (Yosemite 10.10.1) connected via lightning cable to a 21" Thunderbolt display.  My problem is that I have the fan running first thing in the morning when booting the MBP, as well as sporadically through the day.  Placing my hand on various parts of the display shows it to be quite cool, while the fan is on (and even when the fan is not on).  Nevertheless, the fan kicks-in regardless of:
    brightness set to 50% or set to 100%;
    use of 6 alternative spaces (of video desktop) or 1;
CPU processing at 50% idle or at 95% idle.
It is a complete mystery why the fan has to come on AT ALL.  I've been through the following display-related Firmware updates, but each exhibits the same issues.:

    Any ideas?

TBD fans are on all the time.  That is be design.  Don't worry unless it is making some strange noises.  I assume you mean 27" display and not 21?

  • Portege R500 connected to mains - fans runs continuously

Have an R500 for some months now and the more i use it the more the fan is giving on my nerves even in the lowest whisper.
And it is really a pity because from any other aspect i love this machine.
My solution is to try to use it always on battery instead plugged because if plugged the fan runs continuously even when the temperature is below 50 celsius while on battery even if it reaches 60 it isn't spinning at all.
So could you please tell me if there is any solution to fool it and while plugged make it believe it is on battery?
    Thanks.

    Hey claw
If you are writing about power saver mode or power saver plan in power settings it is not the same what Jaba wrote.
To set cooling fan to lower method please do follow:
Control Panel > Power Options > Balanced Change Plan settings > Change Advanced power settings > Toshiba Power Saver Settings > Cooling Method > Plugged in set it to Battery Optimized.
I have done the same on my notebook and it runs quieter as before.
Please test it on your Portege notebook.

  • Whenever I run Firfox 4.0, my computer fan runs continuously. I have disabled all plug-ins, and I get the same result. This did not happen with Firefox 3.x, and it doesn't happen with IE 8.0. Any ideas?

Whenever I run Firfox 4.0, my computer fan runs continuously. I have disabled all Firefox plug-ins, but I get the same result. This did not happen with Firefox 3.x, and it doesn't happen with IE 8.0. Any ideas?

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • Fans run continuously @ 6000rpms

I just got a new 17" Unibody 2.66 and the fans run continuously at 6000rpm.
For example, right now they are running at 6000 w/ temps of:
    CPU A - 35
    GPU - 36
    GPU Diode - 38
    GPU Heatsink - 30
This is on a clean install with only Safari running.
    What's the deal?

There could be some problem that doesn't show up on the AHT, like maybe a loose mounting screw or some tape interfering with the air flow or something along those lines. The fans should be silent when idling. So my guess is that there is still something wrong, but it will take someone actually opening it up and looking. It sounds like a mechanical problem of some sort.
Ironically, "mooing" was a problem with the first original MBP's that came out.
I think it's time to take your MBP into an Apple Store or call Apple to have this looked at.
    Good luck!

  • Fans run continuously on my iMac(1 day old)

I don't know whether anyone might be able to assist, but the fans run continuously on my barnd new 27" iMac.
I have upgarded the HD to 3 TB anf the ram to 12 GB.
I have reset the smc some 4 times.
I do not know what else to do.
    Any suggestions are most welcome.

I second Paul_31.  If you haven't called Apple by the time you read this, you ought to do it now.  You have a brand new machine.  Don't try any more "fixes" until you call Apple.
Equally as important, whether they replace the machine of fix the one you have, you really ought to consider purchasing Apple Care.  It extends the warranty to 3 years and gives you access to tech support for the additional time period at no cost.

  • Fan runs continuously after Update to Leopard

    Hi,
after updating my macbook pro to leopard after a few minutes the fan runs continuously. I think the problem is the bluetooth process, which consumes 56 % of the cpu. The bluetooth firmeware is 2.1.0f17. I have installed the latest updates 10.5.3.
    Can anybody help?
    Thank you.

    Welcome to the Forums!
Assuming you're using Activity Monitor to identify the offending process, you can quit the process from there. Does it return after a reboot?
    Hope this helps...

  • Thunderbolt Display Fan Noise

Today i bought a new 27" Thunderbolt Display to use with my 15" MBP but i have notice a disturbing fan noise for the first 10 to 15 mins when i plugged it in... I found this thread here (27" Thunderbolt Display Fan noise), i downloaded the firmware v1.1 but it says your thunderbolt doesn't need it.
Is there any other firmware i should install? or any other software? What is the other one that guy installed, any clue?
    Please advice!

Read this thread before you try to use firmware upgrade Thunderbolt Display "dead" after firmware upgrade to Version 1.2

  • How do I stop my fan running continuously?

My fan runs continuously and is very noisy.  I have reset the SMU but the problem persists.

    Hello
first question to ask is , why my fan run continuously ?
try use Apple Hardware Test software to answer , could be a temperature problem , fan problem , temp sensor problem ..
AHT is locate into your original grey CD , try run and report any error may help to understand your problem
AHT could be run to hold on at start up "D" key on keyboard , depend on your imac model / system version

  • Macbook fan runs continually with Zynga games...

My wife reports that her Macbook fan runs continually when playing Zynga games...internet games in facebook. I watched her, and it's true...if she quits the game the fan stops. Is this a potential problem? Seems that's all she does on that laptop... I suggested she stop playing the games, but that advice will not be heeded:) thx.

  • Fan runs continuously on my Powerbook G4

I remember buying my Powerbook G4 Titanium back and then reading the review after I already had the computer at home. The review complained that the Powerbook ran hot.
This has been my experience. I can't hold it in my lap without a pillow to buffer the heat and the power button is hot enough to hurt a little if you hold your finger on it.
The real issue now (I can't remember how long this has been a problem, seems like years) is that I can hear the fan run continuously and it makes a loud whistle. It's distracting enough that I can't take my laptop into a library without disturbing everyone else.
Has this been your experience? I know G4 PBs have run hot from the beginning, but am I stuck with this noisy fan? I don't know if a new fan will be any quieter or what to do with this thing. I'd hate to replace the fan (that can't be cheap) and find that I still deal with the same distracting noise.
By the way, the fan runs right from startup, even before the computer has gotten hot.
    -JOHN
ps, By the way, I've opened Activity Monitor and there is nothing using up the %cpu. I'm at about 20% of capacity with two or three apps open.

    John_Neumann wrote:
Even if the fan is running continuously, if I get a brand new one installed, I would have a quiet computer again for the year or two that I plan to still own this thing, correct?
    Hi John,
No, I suspect that is not correct. The fan is simply a motor. It either runs or it doesn't. If it does, it is functioning properly. If it runs when it is not supposed to, the fan "controller" is not functioning properly. If the fan controller and the fan ARE functioning properly, then the logic board itself is running too hot for some reason, which, in your case, I suspect is the truth.
TiBooks (and some others) have long had heat issues. I have long suspected that it wasn't the actual design, but that some part of the very complicated/integrated physical system had been compromised. In many cases (and possibly yours), I suspect it's a breakdown of either the heat sink itself, or, more likely, the heat paste that "connects" the heat sink to the CPU (and, depending on the laptop, other heat sinks as well); thus, the path which the heat is supposed to take, from CPU (or elsewhere) to the heat sink/and/or fan, is "broken" and the heat cannot dissipate as well as it should. Hence, the fan runs on and on. My .02, fwiw.

  • How can I select shutdown & close the display w/o going into sleep mode?

I have learned to wait untill the MBP full shuts down before closing the display. In the past I have pressed shutdown closed the display only to find out later the MBP goes into sleep mode before fully shuting down. When I reopen the display the computer finishes the shutdown process or worse the battery is dead.
I would like to select shut down, close the display and walk away while the computer completes the shutdown process.
Is there any setup options or apps. that will allow this?
    Thanks, Joe
    (new to the mac)
    MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Well hello there, and welcome to Macintosh.
Unfortunately you can't change anything to stop this from happening. The shutdwn process goes about its business killing processes and applications that have been running. The sleep process interrupts ALL business going on in the OS, and puts the machine into low power mode, as it is not aware of the nature of the running processes (in this case, the shutdown process), knowing only that they must be slept and the machine dropped into sleep mode. You gotta wait it out before you close the lid.
I would suggest sending a message in OS X feedback requesting this as a feature!

  • Grey Screen while running a dvd/Sleep Mode

    Hello everyone,
I have a Mac pro G5 PowerPC running leopard. I recently just did the apple updates on my computer and ever since then when I have a dvd in my computer after awhile I get the grey screen saying that I need to restart my computer. This has happened about 10 times since I did the update a few days ago. When it reboots I get the message saying that my OS X had stopped responding. I go to send the apple report and take a look at what it is sending and it is something about a kernal. I had a co worker recently say that his computer was doing the same thing with the grey screen when it goes into sleep mode. Is this a known issue at the moment?
When I come home from work and hear my fan running I turn on my monitor and have the grey screen. I thought it was my computer going into sleep mode that was giving me the error however when I rebooted and started my computer a couple hours later. In the middle of watching a dvd I suddenly got the grey screen. The same thing happened while watching a movie last night.
About 2 months ago I bought a new hard drive for my computer and used a program called SuperDuper to make an exact copy of my hard drive onto this new one. I then swapped the new hard drive in my computer. It has been running fine until I just installed the OSX updates.
I don't know if it is coincidence that when I am running a dvd that the grey screen appears since I have done the updates or that doing the OSX update has somehow made my OSX go bonkers.
Also is it possible since I installed the OSX on this new hard drive via this program and not from a disc that is the possible reason when I did updates that my computer's osx freaks out. If so why does it wait about an hour or so of being used to suddenly stop working?....
My other thought could be that my dvd drive is going bad and needs replacing and why would that make my OSX crash?.... if that is the case what dvd drive should I buy and install?
Sorry I don't know much about computers and all this stuff but these are just some of the things I thought might be happening and I just don't know enough about computer to say "yes that is why this would be happening"
    Thank you everyone,
I look forward to your responses

    Hi bessera;
You are suffering from kernel panics. These are generally caused by a hardware problem, most of the time bad RAM. I would suggest use the install media for you Mac and running Apple Hardware Test using the direction written on the DVD.

  • Why is optical drive running when in sleep mode

Optical drive appears to be trying to start during sleep mode. It sounds just as it does when MacBook is booted up, this happens continually every few seconds or so in sleep mode. Any ideas? Thanks

To appease the greenies. Has nothing to do with running cooler, IMO.
Well of course running cooler is not the main objective, saving power is and heat is dissipated power. Hence if running hot, the main purpose has not been achieved. I don't think Apple or anyone will argue to the contrary.
    As noted earlier, Temperature Monitor.
Thank you for the link, I had just downloaded iStat Pro which has less detailed reporting.

  • IMac running while in sleep mode?

I just got my 2011 iMac in the mail 2 days ago and everytime I put it in sleep mode, the screen goes off but the mac keeps running. The top of the mac stays a little warm in sleep mode, but not hot. I'm new to the mac and was wanting to know if this is normal, or is my settings off?

There are 2 levels of sleep, Display and Computer. If only the Display is sleeping after the auto timers have run out, then you may have a process that is keeping the computer from auto sleeping.
On that, work thru the following artical and call us in the morning.
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
