Thunderbolt Display & Mac Pro

Can I connect a Thunderbolt Display To the MacPro?

The ThunderBolt display requires a Mac that was made with a ThunderBolt port.
The Mac Pro 65lb tower is not currently a member of that club.
It will not work, and there is no known way to make it work.

  • Purchase Help: iMac 2011 vs Thunderbolt Display   Mac Mini 2011

    Hello,
I purchased Thunderbolt display with Mac mini 2011. I experienced a lot of graphic issues with Mac mini when I connected to Thunderbolt display. I exchanged Mac mini 3 times but the same result. The Thunderbolt display is working fine with MacBook Pro 2011.
I'm going to return both Thunderbolt display and Mac mini and interested to get iMac. Is there any differences between iMac and Thunderbolt display + Mac mini 2011? i.e., in technology, release update cycle, features etc? My main intention to buy Thunderbolt display is to use with both Mini and MacBook Pro.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know why you are surprised at the similar sizes of the 27-inch iMac, the 27-inch Cinema Display, and the 27-inch Thunderbolt display.  The 27-inch iMac came first, and the others are "monitor-only" products that seem to use the same LCD panel(s).
As to a current 27-inch iMac vs. a current 27-inch Thunderbolt display,
    * The iMac serves as a standalone computer, and can also serve as a dumb monitor for an external computer that has a Thunderbolt port.  When operating as a dumb monitor, the iMac only serves as a monitor; it does not offer breakout connections to USB 2.0, Firewire 800, or Gigabit Ethernet.
    * The Thunderbolt display is a dumb monitor for an external computer that has a Thunderbolt port.  It also serves as a breakout box for USB 2.0, Firewire, 800, and Gigabit Ethernet connections (which is convenient if your main machine is a laptop; you can do all of your docking with one Thunderbolt cable + one power cable).

  • Thunderbolt for Mac Pro?

Any news for thunderbolt in Mac Pro?

Anxious is what all the people asking over the last year and thinking it was needed
Your Mac Pro has more bandwidth than TB supplies
And you can learn about Thunderbolt from Apple, Intel and Wikipedia
Intel will this fall offer motherboards (PC segment) - Apple had Thuderbolt locked in for a year.
TB interface connections cost a lot more than some realized and are hoping that will go down.
A search of forum from Google would turn up a lot of threads and reasons why it makes sense on laptops but not much for us. And it is still too new and buggy even.

  • No Thunderbolt on Mac Pros?

We just bought 4 new Mac Pro towers...like $20,000...and the 4TB external Thunderbolt RAID unit (for video editing work mostly)
Now we find out the Mac Pro's don't have thunderbolt? Really? There is no adaprter card or anything?
You simply CANNOT use thunderbolt on a Mac Pro?!
I guess Apple is saying Thunderbolt isn't for pros...just like FCPX

  • Thunderbolt and Mac-Pro

I have a MBP "17/ 2011 and a Thunderbolt Display "27/2011 . Does anybody knows if there will be an adapter to use a Mac Pro/2007 with the TBolt display ?

You can't. TB displays only work on iMac and others like MacBook line with motherboard support.
So you need "old" not  proprietary, and lots of those to choose from.

  • 5770  +dual display + mac pro 1,1 = broken

I recently installed a 5770 in my mac pro 1,1 , using dual 22" displays, one through DVI, one through mini display port and it works fine with 10.6.4 + SL graphics update. I then installed 10.6.5 (also have tried 10.6.6) and i lose the monitor plugged into the mini display port. All the hardware is fine cause it still finds it in bootcamp and if i boot off an external with 10.6.4 + SL graphics. 10.6.6 still detects the second display, it shows up in system profiler and shows in the display top icon, but the screen wont come off standby.... HELP ME!!!!!!

I have an extra ATI X1900 XT that I've kept for my Mac Pro 1,1 - just in case my existing card ever failed, but it hasn't, and probably won't. Plus I've got a Mac Pro 3,1 that until last week I had never taken it out of the box.
I despise the mini display port, and I feel your pain.
The ATI X1900 XT has been a great card for my Mac Pro, but instead of me keeping it in a box in case of an emergency, I'd rather see it get used by someone else who needs it. Actually listed it for sale last week on ebay. Shocked there were no bidders. Reasonably priced of course.
Before I listed it for sale on ebay, I recorded a screen capture video and posted it on youtube as a example demonstration of it working on my computer.

  • LED cinema display + Mac Pro + Boot camp = build in iSight not working

    Hallo,
I hope that anybody has the same situation. I bought a Mac Pro and the LED cinema display. Installed boot camp and windows vista. Now I recognized that the iSight camera build in the LED cinema display is not always working. Mostly not. Sometimes the iSight is recognised but as written mostly not . May be the USB is out of specification. I want to give the display back and buy a new one. Before i go this way I want to be sure that normally this configuration is working. Could anybody please confirm this?
    Thank you, Frank

    You're welcome, frankiko
Is it true that in your opinion it should work?
    No.
I will try your suggestions ... send back the LED cinema display... it seems to be working with MacOS.
Your new information is helpful. Because your system, including iSight, consistently work properly when running Mac OS X, your LED cinema display, iSight, Mac, and Mac OS X, are obviously working properly.
Although I do not use Windows®, the problem you describe must be with your Windows® installation and/or configuration. Therefore, returning the display will not resolve your problem unless you plan to use some different camera that you know works with your Windows® installation.
Before you return your LED display, you may wish to consider any of the following that may be relevant to the system you are using:

    (2) If you use Mac OS X 10.6 Boot Camp with Vista: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3777
    (3) If it is an option in your version of Boot Camp, have you tried repairing the Boot Camp drivers? See your Boot Camp Installation Guide for help on how to repair the drivers and reinstall a specific driver if necessary.
    (4) If you have not already seen this, you may find other help in Apple's Boot Camp Support page.
    (5) After you have any possible Boot Camp issues resolved, and especially if you are having any other problems with Vista, check to be certain that Vista was installed and configured properly.
    (6) If you get no better suggestions here, the last answers in both the Boot Camp 2.0, Mac OS X 10.5: Frequently asked questions and the Boot Camp 3.0, Mac OS X 10.6: Frequently asked questions tell you that you can get phone-based assistance or online support for Boot Camp from Apple.

  • Dual graphics cards and single 4K display - Mac Pro (late 2013)

I'm considering a new Mac Pro as my next graphics/development workstation. I see that the new Mac Pros have dual graphics cards (i.e. dual D300, D500, D700.) I was wondering if there is any benefit to having the second graphics card if I only have only one 4K display connected via Display Port 1.2? Would the two cards work in tandem to output to the single 4k display? Can the second GPU still be used for OpenCL, even if it is not connected to a display?
    Thanks

There is no option to have only one Dxxx, and yes some apps do and no the number of displays does not affect video output.
Whether it is right for you vs say a maxed out iMac or something else is something you should continue to research and consider.

  • New 30" Display + Mac Pro: Firewire connector discrepancies

Love my new display and computer - but why does the Display come with the older style (6-pin) FW connector, and the Mac Pro have the newer (Beta) plugs?
Is there a PCI card I can purchase (ugh!) to make up for this?
(I was really surprised to learn of this inconsistency when my computer and display arrived last week...)

The 30" was designed before FW800 was common. FW400 is too slow for modern hard drives, so Macs now use FW800. A simple adapter or FW400 to FW800 cable lets you use older devices. The 30" display's ports are only FW400, so are not useful for modern external drives, so many users would not bother plugging the display's fireWire cable into the computer.

  • When will I have thunderbolt for Mac Pro?

I have Quad MacBook w/ Thunderbolt, But When will they release a Mac Pro with Thunderbolt? Anyone have any idea or heard any rumors?
    Thanks Bobby

Honestly, I wouldn't even worry about Thunderbolt at this point. Yes, it has amazing potential, but there's hardly any devices that use it. Even USB 3.0 isn't really taking off. Let the people who just purchased the hardware for it be the guinea pigs. A lot may depend if the Windows market invests in the tech. It's going to be much more difficult to sell an external HD that only connects to macs.
For now, USB 2.0 works fine (Firewire if doing video editing) and even my internal Blu-ray burner works using a SATA cable. The transfer rate for both is quite acceptible for me.
I DO wonder if a plug-in card would be possible. I'm not tech savy, so not sure if the PCI Express slots supports that speed.

  • 23" Apple Cinema HD Display & Mac Pro (Power Button Issue)

I have a 23" Apple Cinema HD Display (pre-aluminum model) hooked up to a Mac Pro (early 2008 model) via the Apple ADC-DVI converter. This display has two buttons (brightness and power control) which I can enable/disable in the display preferences. They do not react at all when disabled (surprise, surprise) and they do, when enabled (they flash when being pressed). The brightness button brings up the display preferences panel (brightness settings) and makes it disappear, when being pressed again. Up to this point it's all the way I would expect it. But: the power butten flashes too when pressed, but nothing else happens. With my previous Power Mac G5 (Tiger) it used to start/wake the machine or - when awake - put it back to sleep respectively and that is what I basically want it to do with my Mac Pro. Are there any ideas on what I might be missing here? As the brightness button still works as expected, this looks like a software (Leopard) issue to me.
    Oliver

I think we may have traded posts in another thread about this, but just confirming: you still have the kernel-panic-on-wake issue even after upgrading to 10.5.2? That cleared it up for me.
If you do ... do you by chance have anything plugged into the MacBook Pro's left USB port when it crashes? You might want to try leaving that port free when the machine is sleeping. A colleague swears that the left port is slightly underpowered, leading to all kinds of USB oddities when used, including kernel panics.

  • When thunderbolt on mac pro?

Any rumors on when a new Mac Pro will come out with thunderbolt?

Most people for now are asking if there are any PCIe cards, and looking for 3rd party support.
Not only is the "when will Apple release" sort of frowned upon strongly, and always unknown until it happens, it depends on Intel of course, and whether it is a deal-breaker.
    ie,
If and when you need something is always the right time.
New = gee, are there any surprises in store? Will it take 3-4 months for OS and driver support as well as the 'gottcha" for 3rd party software and device support?
TB is big news for laptops. We've always had ability to add PCIe SAS/SATA, and not sure what it will mean to a Mac Pro and video link.
USB3 use to get asked a lot, and people wanting to add USB3 storage though those seem to have higher price and only slightly better than an eSATA controller interface.

  • Duel displays Mac pro not working properly

I have a MacPro Tower that I bought 4 years ago that was running OS 10.5.x. I *just* finally got around to upgrading the OS (I've had Snow Leopard discs for over a year and never installed them), so that's what I upgraded to. I have two displays connected to the system: a 23" Apple Display and a 20" Acer.
I was running with both displays before the upgrade just fine, and after initially upgrading to 10.6.3 my mouse was easily going back and forth between the two screens, but just ran the upgrade to 10.6.8 and now my mouse is "stuck" in the Acer screen and won't move over to my Apple Display - and the Apple Display is the one that has all the open windows and menus.
I tried unplugging and replugging in my displays and restarting the problem remains.
    Any ideas for a solution?

For: "The battery does not appear to be charging properly"
    Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If resetting SMC does not help, MacBook Pro should be  taken to the Apple store for service.
    Best.
