Thunderbolt Display, no sound, no network

Hi guys,
I have seen some similar issues posted on the forum, but didn't found any solution yet.
After update to Yosemite, neither the sound of my Thunderbolt Display works nor the ethernet network connection (even though the switch sees the port as "up").
Does anyone knows a solution here? The sound settings only let me choose my MBP but not the TB Display.
For network it simply says "not connected".
That is really frustrating and annoying! Firs this buggy release for iPhones and iPads and now this... in the past I was happy about stability and quality of Apple products, currently its simply overpriced and unstable.
Cheers
Tom

I now have the same issue with TBD and rMBP. After applying the EFI and 10.8.2 OS X update, my rMBP will not wake from sleep with the USB keyboard connected via TBD. I have no issues with sound or external HDDs though.
My workaround for now is to connect the USB keyboard directly to the rMBP USB port and I can wake from sleep. I've called Applecare today and finally they had me send a log of my system so their engineers can look at it. Should hear back from them in a few days.
For now, I recommend connecting your keyboard directly to the rMBP instead of TBD to wake from sleep.
Will update once I hear back from the Applecare folks.

  • 2 Thunderbolt displays   MBP = sound coming from both displays?

    Hello everyone,
So my question is: "Is it possible to make my both thunderbolt displays to produce sound to? Currently I can choose either one of them or my macbook pro, but maybe somehow it's possible to make it go thru both of the displays?"
They are connected to macbook pro via thunderbolt.

    Success!!!
Okay this got a bit complicated, but I found the right mix of software to make this work.  So here's again the hardware and software setup:
    TD = Thunderbolt Display
    CH = Channel
    MBP = MacBookPro
    L = Left Speaker
    R = Right Speaker
    TD1 (L/R)    |    TD2 (L/R)    |    MBP (L/R)
    iTunes => SoundFlower => Jack => Aggregate Device => 6 speakers!
Stereo audio only has 2 channels (left and right).  So the trick is to get 2 system channels to map to the 6 speaker channels I have.
Step 1: Setup an Aggregate device to merge the 3 sets of speakers into one aggregate.
1-1: In Lion, go to Apps > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
1-2: Click the + in the bottom left and select Create aggregate device.
1-3: Select the 3 devices: Built-in Output, Display Audio, Display Audio (there are 2)
    1-4: Click Configure Speakers
1-5: Select all 3 streams at the top
1-6: Click Multichannel and then select Hexagonal (this gives you 6 virtual speakers in the graphic)
1-7: I don't think this step is required, but map the channels to the right locations.  For me this was a little confusing because TD1 was channels 3 & 4, TD2 was 5 & 6 and, and MBP is 1 & 2.  From top left going clockwise, I selected 4, 5, 1, 2, 6, 3.
1-8: You can click the speaker for each one to hear a test tone to make sure you have them right.  It's right if the 2 left ones come out of the left screen, the 2 center ones from the center screen, and the 2 right ones from the macbook.
1-9: Right down the numbers so that you know which ones you want for left and which ones you want for right.
Okay, now this is enough to get audio from 2 devices, but stopping here you'd lose your volume control and 4 of your 6 speakers.
Step 2: Install 3 apps (all free):
    2-1: Download SoundFlower from http://cycling74.com/soundflower-landing-page/
    2-2: Download JackOSX from http://www.jackosx.com/
2-3: Download JackOsX Autostart from http://www.jackosx.com/
    Step 3: Setup Jack
    3-1: Install Jack
3-2: Start JackPilot and go to Preferences
3-3: Setup input-output device as Aggregate Device that you setup in step 1
3-4: Interface Output Channels should show 6 (6 speakers!).  Set Virtual Output channels to 2 (stereo)
3-5: Uncheck auto-connect with physical ports
3-6: Save changes and start the Jack server if it's not running.
    Step 4: Setup Soundflower
    4-1: Install Soundflower
4-2: Click the flower in the task bar and then choose JackRouter under the 2-channel at the top
4-3: In Lion, go to Apps > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
4-4: Find Soundflower (2 ch) and click it, then on the right select Output and then configure speakers
4-5: Select Stero and then set the left speaker as 1 and the right as 2.  Testing the speakers here will likely do nothing.  That's okay.
    Step 5: Finish Jack
    5-1: Go to Connection Manager
5-2: Note: this part was a pain -- the UI is funky, so be patient.  Click only how described.
5-3: Open the various sub-sections until you can see Soundflowerbed under the Send Ports and see out1 and out2 (the stereo ports) and the System under Receive Ports and you should see playback_1 thru playback_6
5-4: Carefully single-click out1 then double-click the first left speaker channel.  Single-click out1 again and then double-click 2nd left speaker channel.  Single-click out1 again and then double-click 3rd left speaker channel.
5-5: Carefully single-click out2 then double-click the first right speaker channel.  Single-click out2 again and then double-click 2nd right speaker channel.  Single-click out2 again and then double-click 3rd right speaker channel.
    5-6: Close the connections manager
Load up iTunes or something else and play music.  If everything is setup correctly, all 6 speakers should be going with 3 left playing the left channel and the 3 right playing the right channel!
And since you're using Soundflower, your volume controls on your keyboard, etc, should work just fine.  Note: you can tweak your individual volume controls back in the aggregate device setup if you need to fine-tune something.
Hopefully that all worked for you!  Let me know how you made out!

I am using duel thunderbolt displays with a MacBook Pro. I only have the option to have sound come from one or the other. Has anyone thought of making the left channel come from both speakers on the left Monitor and the same of the right? If yes, how is that done? The MacBook Pro could even be a center channel if configured in that order.

  • Thunderbolt display unplugs all devices

After updating to the new firmware, my thunderbolt display loses sound, internet, and USBs a couple times a day. This is frustrating...
    Any suggestions?

Unplug TBD from wall and Mac.  Wait 2 minutes and reconnect to Mac then to wall in that order.  This may help.

I am recording with Logic Pro X, using my Yamaha XS8 keyboard as a Midi controller. I also have a Thunderbolt Display. Every time I play and release a note on the keyboard, the Thunderbolt Display speaker emits a doink sound. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop? My sound is running through the Saffire Pro 40 Interface (Focusrite) into external speakers with powered amps.
Also, When I record I am hearing little pops in the system. I have checked all of my meters and they are not clipping. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop?

The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?

    Tristan...
This is what you have, correct?
    http://www.alesis.com/usbmidicable
    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

  • No sound from Thunderbolt Display after update to OS X 10.9.3

So I updated to 10.9.3 this morning only to find there is no sound coming from my Thunderbolt Display after installation. Sound is now only audible from my MacBook Pro (late 2011). Also, see image below, there is no sign of any connected inputs other than my MBP now. I've shutdown and restarted a number of times, but still no audio from the display.
Really starting to wonder why it's worth spending so much on Apple products now...

I sent my TB Display in for repair. They had it almost a week and didn't find anything wrong with it. Instead they took in my MacBook Pro and replaced the logic board (2nd time it had been replaced) and the Display seems to be working fine now.
...except that for using 3rd party video conf apps, those apps only pick up the MBP camera (even though i try to change settings in app), not the TBD camera... but FaceTime and Skype find the TBD camera.
    Strange.

I completely agree with that sentiment. That's why we pay through the nose for their products, so it feels very bad when they don't just work.

  • Static Sound When Connecting Macbook Pro to Thunderbolt Display

Every so often when I connect my late 2013 Retina 15-inch Macbook Pro to my Thunderbolt Display it will product static for about three seconds, it sounds like a wave since the volume increases and then decreases.  I've searched the forums and am just curious if this is a known issue.  It's very odd.

It sounds like you're already using the best way. The Thunderbolt port is also a Mini DisplayPort, so you're connecting it DisplayPort to DisplayPort. The reason that is the best way is most other cables, including HDMI in my experience, will not reach the 2560x1440 resolution. (HDMI will probably drive that monitor at 1080p, or only 1920x1080.)
If DVI were to be used, it would have to be the expensive Dual-Link DVI because regular old Single Link DVI isn't capable of 2560x1440. It's a good thing the MacBook has Mini DisplayPort on it instead of DVI (like the older Apple laptops did) because DisplayPort cables are far cheaper than Dual-Link DVI adapters.
You can't do better than the connection you're already using.

  • Sound Switches Between Thunderbolt Display and MacBook Pro

I have an Apple Thunderbolt display and MacBook Pro set-up with dual screens. I have an iPhone plugged into a dock that runs to the display. When I have music playing out of the display and I disconnect my iPhone, it switches the sound to the MacBook Pro.
    1. How do I stop this from happening?
    2. If I can't stop it from happening, how do I move the sound from the MacBook Pro back to the display?
There doesn't seem to be any options within Preferences/Sound to change it back.
    Thank you.

I've a Spyder4Elite that I use on both my Thunderbolt Display and on my MBP - and, while both are calibrated, they don't - and cannot - 'match' one another, no matter how hard I try.
I suspect that you're running up against the same wall? Different technologies in different displays. I doubt that you'll ever get a perfect match: mine are just 'good enough'.

  • TS4080 apple thunderbolt display image on display intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys. Rebooting by pressing the power button resolves issue.

My apple thunderbolt display (which I purchased 1.5 years ago; OS 10.7.5 Mac Mini) intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys, so am thinking it is a hardware problem with the display. Rebooting by pressing the power button turns the screen back on, but the same phenomenon has occurred several times. Could this be a software issue, or do I need to have my display repaired? Your feedback would be appreciated.

Hi ED, tough to tell, but it does sound like it's waking with the bonk, just not displaying.
    Long shot but...
I wonder if it's a variation of this, of which I've seen many different symptoms...
    Resolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
    Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
        1.    Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.  Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
        2.    Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

  • Thunderbolt display sound and ethernet not reliable after Yosemite upgrade

After upgrading my MacBook Air to Yosemite, my Thunderbolt display has become unreliable. Most of the time, connecting to the display does not allow either the sound or the ethernet capabilities of the monitor to be used by Yosemite. A manual restart of the MacBook temporarily resolves the issue, but it recurs any time I unplug the MacBook and plug it back in again. Reminds my of my Windows days, having to restart the computer to resolve issues. Not a good feeling.

    Hi there,
i was experiencing this too. I followed this procedure (Have a backup available or make one!!)  :http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1756994
    1. Download & Run Kext Utility - http://cvad-mac.narod.ru/files/Kext_...app.v2.5.7.zip
    2. Download & Extract - IO80211Family.kext zip  https://www.sendspace.com/file/4v4a4r
    3. Let Kext Utility do its job repairing permissions, system cache, etc.. then Drag & Drop the extracted IO80211Family.kext file into the Kext Utility
    4. Restart MAC OS X Yosemite 10.10.

  • Random sound/noise coming from bottom left of thunderbolt display?

    Hey everyone,
I bought my Thunderbolt display in September 2012 and it worked well until a month ago. The screen started turning off, and USB and Ethernport ports would stop working from time to time. I took it into Apple and they gave me a new display after being unable to fix the problem.
But now I have a new issue. There is a sound that comes from the display at random times. It sounds close to, but not exactly, like the sound a Mac makes when moving an item to the trash can. It appears to be comming from the bottom left side of the display.
I've tried raising and lowering the volume, but that didn't have any effect (sounds the same no mater where the volume is). Even when the display volume is muted, or even sound output is sent to my USB DAC, the display still makes this noise. It can happen once every 30 seconds, or once every 30 minutes. There's no consistancy as to when it ocures.
I tried connecting my Fiance's MacBook air to my display thinking it may be my Macbook Pro, but the noise still occured.
I've tried connecting the display power to different outlets and different surge protectors, including a Sine Wave UPS, but neither helped.
This has been an issue with 2 brand new displays Apple gave me. I'm still using the second display but getting ready to return it for a third. But before I do, I wanted to post a question to see if someone had any other idea on what it could be and to see if this is something I could fix myself.
It appears to be hardware related, and from my testing it seems to be an issue with the current new Thunderbolt Displays.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

I have a similar issue. Both output and input sounds are setup to come out of a USB speaker system I have attched to the display USB ports. However when emptying the trash, the sound Macs make when doing so comes out of the display speakers. No options for that sound are available. Very odd. There does not seem to be a relation between the volume control either and the volume of the display, the display is loud, even when my mac system voulme is low.

  • Connecting network cable to Thunderbolt display causes MBA to crash

When plugging my MBA into my Thunderbolt screen I noticed that it often causes my MBA to crash - very frustrating! I have since discovered that this only happens when my wired network lead is connected to the Thunderbolt display. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have checked the firmware for the monitor and it is apparently up to date. I would like to be able to use the wired network through the connection on the back of the Thunderbolt screen so it really is quite inconvenient.
    Thanks for any help/advice.

  • Thunderbolt display disconnects from network when asleep

I have a MBP 15" (Retina) connected to a Thunderbolt Display. I'm using the Ethernet connection on the display and "docking" the MBP with the Thunderbolt connection. Every time my MacBook Pro goes to sleep, I lose all my network drives. I don't get an error on the Mac/Finder side, but all my Windows Explorer (through Parallels) windows produce an error about losing the network location. The open windows in the Finder simply go back to the Home folder -with no errors- and my shortcuts back to the network locations work as they should. The same thing happens on the Windows side, albeit with an expected error message; all mapped drives have a red X, but clicking on shortcuts restore the connections.
I'm running the latest version of OSX, the latest version of Parallels and Windows7.

No, the computer must be on.

    Not that I know of.

Now, it's much worse.  It makes the sound no matter whether the display is actually plugged in or the level of brightness, as long as I use the power from the Thunderbolt display it makes the noise, albeit softly.  When I plug the Thunderbolt display in as a second monitor, it gets REALLY loud - to the point where I cannot use the monitor any longer.
There were some weird quirks about when it make the noise (for instance, I could unplug the power from the Thunderbolt to the MBP but left the TB connector in), but now it doesn't seem to matter as long as there is some type of connect from the MBP to the TB display it will make the noise.
It's unfortunate that Apple does not stand behind their products.  I had 2 non-Apple monitors that I paid $200 each in 2001 and they lasted until 2013 when I finally took them to be recycled (even though they still worked).  Too bad Apple seems to want to boost revenue by making people pay for poorly build products instead of building something of quality that will last longer than 1.5 years.  I switched to Apple because I thought they were better, unfortunately I'm learning otherwise.
Someone let me know if Apple every decides to fix the problem it created...

Possible Solution for under $2.00:  Plug the display into one of those ground eliminating plugs that allow you to plug grounded cords into old style two prong receptacles.
I took my display to the Apple Store.  They could not reproduce the sound, so they were unable to do anything to fix it.  While the Thunderbolt display was on vacation at the Apple Store, I thought more about what MAD SCI described as the possible source of the problem ["THAT MEANs that all these devices are now connected. Problem being is that the audio is not protected from ground noise…"].  The fact that the display worked fine at the Apple Store, lead me to think the problem was with the electricity in my office, since it is in a historic building in an old downtown area.  I suspect my electricity may have ground noise since I have to plug everything (Wi-Fi modems, phone modem, external network drives, copier, printer, lamps, etc.) into the same circuit.
When I got my display back I decided to try plugging the display's power cord into one of those little plugs that converts a three prong into a 2 prong, by eliminating the ground prong.  I plugged the display into the ground-eliminating plug, then into the surge protector.  While I confess it has only been a few days that the display has been functioning under these conditions, there is no hiss sound.  Last time I thought I found a solution, I performed experiments to recreate the hiss and it never went away; so this time I have decided to be superstitious rather than scientific.  So you should take this report as an anecdote only.
Additionally, I do not recommend this solution, because eliminating the ground may cause problems.  [As described by MAD SCI: "It is only protection against lightening really. So if you wonder why apple has done this and not fixed it yet, it’s more political than you think…."] With this in mind, I believe there is a risk the described fix could turn your display into a useless piece of junk, if there was a power surge from a lightening strike that was not eliminated by the expensive surge protector it is probably plugged into. Of course, since my noise was so loud, the display was already a useless piece of junk (until I eliminated the hiss with this "kludgy" fix), I figure I have nothing to loose.
