Thunderbolt display to hard drive?

I have a 15" MBP with a 27" TBD connected to it and finally a 4TB G-RAID TB connected to the display. I wanted to add another monitor but I did not know if I should save and get another TBD and connect the hard drive to it, or just connect another monitor to the back of the hard drive. Would there be any major differences between the two with data speed?

See -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbolt_%28interface%29. The hard drive(s) should start the chain with the Display(s) at the end.
I would get another TB Display, unless you've a Retina MBP? If a Retina, you would not have to daisy-chain but could rather use the second TB port with an adapter to another ported display.

  • Thunderbolt Display attached hard drive

I hope this isn't a completely stupid question...I just haven't been to the Apple Store to ask nor have I been able to find an documentation to confirm or refute this issue.
Will a hard drive connected to the Thunderbolt Display that is hard-wired to a network via the Gigabit port be available as a network drive even when my Macbook Pro is not attached to the display?  Will they be similar to a network attached storage device or do they need a Mac to be attached in order to mount them?
    Thanks

Bought a TB display to use with my 2011 mbp last night.  Hate that it doesn't have a power button.
Really hate that the usb implementation seems quite broken.  I spend 95% of my time in Windows, and while the display functions, usb doesn't really.  The apple usb keyboard i bought sticks, and my dell mouse hangs frequently.  both are plugged into the display, but they work fine when plugged into the laptop directly. I also have a jabra usb headset plugged into the display.
I have noticed I can worsen the situation by actually using the display hardware.  If I start a call using the headset, the keyboard and mouse become even worse.  If I start using the facetime hd camera on the display, they become horribly erratic.
Apple definitely has some work to do.  They are billing this is a docking solution and it is completely unusable as such right now.

  • Why doesn't macbook pro 2.3GHz Retina display have hard drive configuration?

When I'm about to order the macbook pro 2.3Ghz Retina display in the apple.com website. there are no hard drive configuration. the hardware configuration are only memory, apple usb super drive and apple thunderbolt. but no hardrive. why?

Because that is the base model of the Retina Edition.
The Retina Edition doesn't come with a Hard Drive.  It uses a Flash Drive.
If you want a larger flash drive, you have to step up to the next model.

  • Thunderbolt 2 external hard drive not working with Macbook Pro (early 2011)

    Hi,
I'm new to this forum and I hope you guys can help me with this:
I've recently bought an external hard drive that works on Thunderbolt 2 (LaCie d2 3TB). When I connect the new drive to my Macbook Pro through the thunderbolt port, the drive isn't recognized. However, the drive works fine through a USB connection.
I thought that Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 are compatible, however this doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe it's because the OS X / driver / firmware version that I'm working on that is not updated? I work on an early 2011 Macbook Pro: OS X Version 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
Thank you very much for your help!
    Daniel

    Hi danielsh6,
I recently bought the new Lacie Thunderbolt 2 D2 3TB and I had the same problem as you, i have a macbook pro early 2011, those support thunderbolt but many times there is a bug that doesn't let you connect any thunderbolt drives to your computer. The solution I found was installing this update:
    Thunderbolt Firmware Update v1.0
Before doing this I would recommend you updating to mountain lion (not yosemite yet as there is still some glitches and more on preview's macbook pro's).
    Hope this helped!

  • No display after hard drive replacement

I'm working on an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac (late 2006) that sustained a bit of a fall (enough to crack the corner of the front bezel and kill the hard drive).
While diagnosing the problem, I could successfully boot the computer from an OS X disc, or even from my homebrew Triage drive (just Snow Leopard loaded with utilities) with no problems. I ran a full diagnostic test with Tech Tool Pro to ensure the SDRAM and Video RAM weren't causing any issues. Apple and 3rd party disc utilities all reported hardware errors from the hard drive if I attempted any kind of recovery though. So I replaced the internal drive per instructions in an online tutorial, being very careful not to cause any ESD damage during the process.
I ensured that every cable was securely connected and everything was back in its right place, and tried to power on... There was no chime, and no display (even if connected to a known good external), but the hard drive, fans, and optical drive all spin up and the power light still comes on.
I have tried resetting the System Management Controller, along with the PRAM/NVRAM. I've read and seen some articles about resetting the Power Management Unit on some other models, but I'm not sure that my model makes that an option or not. Oh, and I even removed the drive, installed OS 10.6, and reconnected it just in case it was an issue with recognizing that the drive was useable.
Any ideas on how I could get this running again without a trip to the genius bar and a shot to the wallet?

Wow... I guess there must have been some connection loose somewhere. I had checked to make sure every cable was secured several times already, but after your last question I decided to do it again, as well as disconnect/reconnect the two cables that run to the lcd, and the SATA power connector (the end that seems like it shouldn't even be removed from the motherboard, which I think was actually a bad idea) just in case I had managed to loosen it.
I also pulled a piece of black tape off of the 3 diagnostic LEDs that I had heard of, but couldn't seem to find, to see what they might be able to tell me... but it looks like I won't need them now!
Problem solved. Thanks Ralph! Lesson learned: don't put too much trust in my own ability to reconnect everything properly, no matter how careful I was or how many times I've done it before.

  • If a macbook pro with retina display's hard drive fail, do you have to buy a new computer

I am going to get a macbook pro and i'm not sure whether to go for a normal 15 or 15 with retina, i would prefer the retina for what i need it for but this is pretty important

The Retina model doesn't have a hard drive - it has flash memory storage (the same as an SSD, sort of). The flash storage is easily replaceable - even by the user - but the RAM is soldered in, so if you purchase a Retina display model, it's best to opt for the full 16MB of RAM.
Apple sells the non-Retina models with both hard drives and SSDs but their pricing for SSDs is ridiculous. You can add your own at a fraction of the price.
    Hope this helps.

  • ITunes 11 no longer displaying external hard drive files

My iTunes library is on an external hard drive and I have iTunes directed to the media on the external hard drive, but no media of any kind is showing when I open iTunes.  This problem started today and as recently as two days ago everything was fine.  I moved my entire library to an external drive a year ago and have been using iTunes forever.  I have opened iTunes while holding 'option' and directing to the music on my external but I'm not able to select the music folders on the external and there is no file named "iTunes Media" on th external.  There is a "iTunes Media" folder on my internal hard drive bit it contains only 3 artists since I've moved everything.  The iTunes libray itl and xml files are on my internal drive as well.  Any thoughts on what to try next to get iTunes to show the music on my external drive?  Preferably I'd like to keep the info and playlists that I was using a couple days ago.  Thanks!

I thank u all for your input espec mark but also all the various posts in discussions generally. i am pleased to say i astounded myself by working it out (but no hubris here).the answer was to LEAVE the old 'iTunes Library' folder and the old xml file in the 'iTunes' folder on mac2 and then to copy to (subsequently) replace them with the original similar files from mac1 et voila everything - songs, tiles, dates, playlists etc all show up in new iTunes screen. how pleasant when ones aimiable bumblings work!

  • Ibook G4 won't display my hard drive

My Ibook G4 sometimes crashes and won't then show my Hard drive. I replaced the drive about three weeks ago and this fixed the problem for about three days. I replaced the cable between the hard drive and the logic board last week and this seemed to fix the problem properly. Unfortunately a few days ago, my system crashed again and my hard drive disappeared. After a few hours of restarting, I could see the hard drive and began a zero data to try and fix it. I'm guessing it might be corrupted?
After clearing the drive, I tried to reinstall my software but again, I couldn't see it. Eventually it appeared after a few re boots but it wouldn't then let me install.
Any ideas what I should do next? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm tearing my hair out. To para phrase:
I have swapped my hard drive for a new one
    I have reinstalled Leopard
I have swapped the cable between the hard drive and the logic board
I did a hardware test which was all clear
I tried to do my tax return
    My system crashed
    I zeroed my hard drive
    I tried to reinstall Leopard
    Many thanks

That's what I feared. I have tried the solutions on this site http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/ and have found my hard drive again. I'm now trying to re-install my software starting with my initial install disks on 10.3.7.
Fingers crossed this works or does something

  • IMac G5 (10.3.9) display died. Saved hard drive as external disk. Can't import bookmarks from Firefox 2.0.0.2 to use on Mac Mini (10.4.11).

My G5 ran OSX 10.3.9 (highest functional version for that hardware). My Mac Mini (core solo) runs OSX 10.4.1.1 or thereabouts. I don't like the way any other browser works on the Mini, so I want to continue using Firefox, which was my default browser on the iMac, and I had years and years' worth of bookmarks on the iMac that I hope I don't have to rebuild one at a time. The iMac crash involved the display; the hard drive is completely functional and is in a new external drive case. The Apple Store folks said they're not allowed to work on such an old machine and likely it couldn't be repaired anyway. So, I have Firefox and presumably all its bookmarks (and maybe bookmarks backups) on the external hard drive, but the version of Firefox I copied to the Mac Mini does not appear to include any of my bookmarks, and the Firefox web site instructions for restoring Bookmarks from Firefox to Firefox don't address this older version. (I've even tried opening Firefox on the external drive and all I get is the 'clean slate' version with none of my old bookmarks.) How do I restore bookmarks from one version of Firefox to the same version of Firefox, just on a different, newer OS?

Firefox 2 versions use the file bookmarks.html to store the bookmarks.

With Mac OS X 10.4 you can use Firefox 3.5 or 3.6

  • Is there a switch I can use with thunderbolt display and 2 computers

I have the new Mac Mini and the new Macbook Air plus the 27 inch thunderbolt display.  The majority of the time, I will be using the thunderbolt display hooked up directly to the Mac Mini.   I have already tested the theory that if I turn off the Mac mini, I can use a separate thunderbolt cable to hook to the port on the back of the display and to the port on the Air and have it show up on the screen.   Many people said this was not possible as the port on the back of the display was only unidirectional and to be used for thunderbolt accessories like hard drives.   It actually works quite well and so at the very least, I can leave the cable plugged into the back of the display and use it with the Mac Air if I turn off the Mac Mini.   At least I don't have to remove the cable from the Mac Mini and move it over to the Mac Air.  I actually looked at the Kanex switch which would do what I wanted it to do, but unfortunately it says it will NOT work with the thunderbolt display.   Apparently it only works with the Cinema display.  Does anyone know if there is a thunderbolt switch out there?
    Thanks

Thanks, Clinton....that's what I was thinking too.   On the upside, I don't have to remove the actual thunderbolt display cable going to the back of the Mini, I just have to keep a cable in the output port on the back of the display for my Macbook Air.   Then I just turn off the Mini, plug the cable into the Air and I'm ready.   What I find interesting though is that the Kanex "looks" like it will do exactly what I want it to, but apparently it will only work with Mini Display port like that found on the "cinema display".  Maybe one day........
    Thanks again!

  • Snow Leopard Installer doesn't detect my hard drive?! help!

After my earlier post, where my replacement 320gig hard drive is incorrectly (not GUID) partitioned, I backed everything up, made a time machine copy just to be safe, and set about formatting the entire drive, doing a fresh install, and then updating via one of my back ups etc.
However, when I tried restarting from the CDRom, it just hung on the Apple grey splash screen for about 10 minutes with nothing happening, I restarted and held one 'ALT' the two options were my hard drive and the Snow Leopard install disk - I selected the install disk and after short while I was presented with the installer.
The installer displayed no hard drive, nor did the disk utility within' the installer, I can't think what the problem could be, as, as soon as I ejected the installer cd, I booted straight back into my normal system (which I am writing this on now).
I really am stumped as what to do next, comments, suggestions and observations welcome :-D
    Andy (D-F3ens)

I tried that and the both disk's pass the verification, the problem is the installer detecting my hard drive.
When i'm running 10.5 and try to install from the SL Disk it picks up the hard drive (but says it cannot install to this volume, use disk utility etc) - its when I restart and enter the installer via the splash menu, it fails to pick up my hard drive.
I cant see any other way of partitioning my drive to the required GUID, even when I made a seperate 20gig partition, it remains as Mac OSX Journaled on the same drive thats partition scheme is 'Apple Partition Map'.
Bootcamp will not help me either, I thought of creating a seperate partition and installing it to that, then reformatting the rest of the drive from within' SL, but Bootcamp says that it cannot modify the 'startup disk' and says it requires reformatting.
I really am stumped as to what to do next, I can't understand why the installer picks up the hard drive whilst its running, but when its in the installer it doesn't
    Help!!!!

  • Z61t Hard drive not recognized

Im working on a z61t (9443A41) for a friend.  He installed xp and was attempting to install the required drivers when things went bad. The computer displays no hard drive found no matter what you do. So far I have removed the hard drive (fujitsu mhv2060bh) hooked it up on another computer via cable adapters, the hard drive is readable, I have tested it with fujitsu's diagnostic program as well as with partition magic. I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled it. I have updated the bios to v2.24 (7FETA6WW) via bootable cd  and using ultimate boot disk cleared the cmos. The boot order is correct and im completely out of ideas. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated I also have the restore cd he ordered from "user-guides.co.uk" but it doesnt seem to be bootable

  • Hard Drive Trouble on New MacPro

Hello I have had my MacPro desktop for about 4 days now and am having some problems.
There is a 250 gb harddrive in my system and I when I get info the capacity shows as 232.57. I could have sworn it used to say 250gb.
Also on my desktop when I select view options and select "show item info" so it displays the hard drive info with the name it reads:
    232.57 GB,....14 GB free
The useful info is missing, I thought it was just truncated but who would care to see how much is remaining after the decimal. However, when I put in a custom desktop icon the information was back to: 232.57 GB, 219.25 free. I thought the problem was partly fixed but now it is displaying strangely again.
When I was installing photoshop it said I only had 4gb available on this drive.
Could someone please help me as to why this information is not displaying properly.
    Thanks

Thanks for the replies... I actually have the font size the smallest it goes. This info used to show up properly (I know that for sure). Like I mentioned earlier when I changed the icon to a custom one (cmd + I and paste the image on top of the previous icon in) The info returned to displaying properly, then after a few minutes it returned back to this "corrupted" state.
I have tried changing the icon again, toggle show file info on and off, restarting, adjusting the font size and even went to the extreme measures of reinstalling the OS sine this computer is still pretty empty being so new. Perhaps I am missing something here but this has me confused.
    Thanks

  • 2 internal hard drives Mac Pro Tiger Server

I have a mac pro 10.4.11 server that has 2 internal hard drives. 1 is 232.89 GB which is the main startup drive and the second is 465.76 Gb which I had pre installed for extra storage. My question is when I look in Server Admin under sharing and I click the "all" tab. It displays 2 hard drive icons and when you select either one, they consist of the exact same things. Do I need to format the second drive in a way so it will be recognized in the Server Admin Sharing?? I can install applications to the drive as it is recognized in the normal finder but I can't seem to get Server Admin to know it is there. I was going to use the second drive for mostly applications and storage. The other hard drive I was going to try and keep just for home directories.

This is the wrong forum for your topic. You should post it in the Mac OS X Server forum.
