Thunderbolt Display to non Thunderbolt Mac Book Pro?

I am looking at a display for my Mac Book Pro.   I would like to go with the thunderbolt because I plan on a new Mac Book next summer.    Can I use the Thunderbolt Display with my current Mac Book?

If your computer does not have a Thunderbolt port you can't use a Thunderbolt display.

There is a US$10 adapter from old power adapter to new MacBook Pro.
    MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter
The MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter allows you to use the MagSafe connector on your LED Cinema Display, Thunderbolt Display, or MagSafe Power Adapter to charge your MagSafe 2-equipped Mac computer.
For battery life, check the latest Software Update for the fix for most problems.

  • Premiere causes display glitches and crashes Mac Book Pro 15" w/ 750m GPU

    Hello!
Just bought a new mid 2014 Mac Book Pro 15" with 750m GPU.  It works fine with every program except Premiere CC 2014. Games play smoothly with the GPU but when I launch Premiere I notice that the display starts glitching like in the image below. Eventually the whole computer crashes and it states "there was a problem with the Graphics."  Running Yosemite, CUDA drivers are updated, all other programs using the discrete gpu seem to work smoothly. Once I get into Premiere it goes nuts. I even did a clean install of the OSX and reinstalled Premiere and it still does this. Please help! I can't edit my videos with these constant crashes.

Same problem here aswell, got new Motherboard & display, clean install, no result.
Keeps glitching as soon as I start editing...do you use an external monitor to edit? (thunderbolt or hdmi output)
    Cheers

    Hey there,
somehow I cant get my Zalman Trimon Monitor to run on my new Mac book pro (2012, Retina). I tried hooking it up with the Dr. Bott Mini Display port Adapter see here  ( http://www.google.de/products/catalog?client=safari&rls=en&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&q =dr.+bott+mini+displayport&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=9085840057573220630&sa=X&e i=rHMeULWUNo7ysgaZvYGYAg&ved=0CHIQ8gIwBg#ps-sellers )
Neither on my new mac book (with thunderbold) nore with the 2010 Mac book pro 13 inch from my girlfriend both running Mountain Lion, would it work. Does anyone has the same troubles or knows a reason or fix? The monitor definitly works (tried with my old mac book) and this is already the second adapter I use, since I thought maybe the adapter doesnt work!
    Help appreciated!

  • Non bootable Mac Book Pro - What directories to salvage

My wife's 2012 13 in macbook pro stopped working after an update.  I tried everything I found in the forums to reinstall the OS, repair the drive, and to get it working again all with no luck.  As a last resort I ordered a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable and was able to get the HD to show up in Target disk mode.  I copied the users directory and was able to save that to an external drive.
My question is if I want to rebuild this mac after we get it working again, what other directories do I need to salvage while I can?

All User-specific files (including System Settings) are in The Users directory.
The only other things NOT re-Installed with Mac OS X are any special Applications you installed, but you are better off installing those from their original sources than working hard to copy possibly damaged ones from a questionable drive.

  • My (non Unibody) Mac book pro late 2007/08 does not want to turn on.

    Hello folks..
Last night I was working on my laptop and it started to run hot.. However, today I'm trying to boot up the computer and it will not turn on.  I see the little LED light undereith the bottom part of the laptop light up and I hear something initiating, but it wont turn on.... Also, I did a upgrade to a larger hard drive (750gigs) early this year, it's been working great, but now I have this happening.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Jose, try a SMC/PRAM reset. This issue may fall under the failed nvidia 8600M GT graphics card issue which requires a logic board replacement. When did you buy the macbook pro? The nvidia replacement program includes a free repair fofr MBP's purchased 4 years from the purchase date.

  • Fuzzy Display on External Monitors MAC Book Pro

    Morning all,
Right, I've had my MBP for over 6 months now and I love it. Great piece of kit, and I wish I'd come across to OSX years ago. Having said that, I've come across an annoying issue with using external monitors. I have the latest MBP and the software version is 10.9.4. The issue is I have two monitors plugged into the MAC via Mini-Port to DVI to HDMI cables. The main issue is the fonts are quite fuzzy. It's not terrible, but its very frustrating. The weird thing is if I connect to my windows machine via Remote Desktop when Windows loads up its crisp and clear, yet everything behind that window on the same screen on the MAC is fuzzy. Very peculiar.
Secondly the resolution isnt the best. Especially considering what these monitors are capable of on my Windows PC.
I'm sure this must be a common issue? Hopefully there is an easy solution. I can put up with it, but considering how much I've paid for the MAC I would expect a lot better. Just so you know, I'm not tecky on the MAC at all!
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

  • I do like to know how long time to fix my mac book pro 2008 display at Florida Mall store on September 27?

    Hi,
I'm leaving in Rio - Brazil. I intend to go to Orlando on September, 27 of this year! A display of my notebook MAC BOOK PRO 15" 2007 is broked.
I intend to bring with me to fix it at Apple Florida Mall store. I would like to know:
    1) How long time to fix it?
    2) May I upgrade my notebook OX software? I cannot loose all of my informations inside in the HD. I cannot acess those information since last year, when broked.
    3) How much is to put a new display?
    4) How much to upgrade my notebook software OX?
    Thanks,
    Arthur

Some folks can't leave well enough alone, and insist on downloading all sorts of additional "stuff" that ends up making their Mac unstable.
Standard Mac OS X on properly-operating Hardware does not crash, unless you start installing too many add-ons.
You can run "just the basics" by holding down the Shift key at Startup. This does one pass of Disk Repair, then loads a minimal set of extensions, and comes up in Safe Mode. If it works OK that way, but crashes in "regular", it's the add-ons.
There ia another layer of add-on junk that can be added to Safari. If the only remaining problem is Safari crashing, those add-ons can be disabled as well.

  • My late 2007 Mac Book Pro has tiny vertical lines in the display intermittently.

Intermittent, tiny vertical lines in display of my refurbished Mac Book Pro late 2007 , A1226 model.
Have replaced the actual display screen.
Apple Genius Bar tested hardware and all OK, although the display was working by the time I got there.
It is fine right now, I am using it for this post, but is hard to read small letters and numbers when it acts up.
Even when the lines appear the display shows bright and crisp on any external monitor.
Does anyone have any insight to this problem?
    Thanks !

It could be the inverter cable or board is beginning to get frayed.
If attaching an external display shows the lines, you know the problem is direct to the videochip itself.
Some games are videochip specific in their requirements and may trigger the issue anyway, if the videochip is not on their supported list.

  • Is it possible to connect a mac book pro via thunderbolt and a dvi switchbox (multiple computers) to a thunderbolt display?

    Hi,
I'm planning to buy a thunderbolt display.Since I have not only apple computers with a thunderbolt port I wonder if it's possible to connect my mac book pro via thunderbolt and a DVI switchbox via a "mini displayport to DVI connector" to the thunderbolt display at the same time. Thunderbolt is a bus architecture. Thus there must be an ingoing and an outgoing port on the display. The rearview of the display I've seen so far don't show this:
If this is not possible then I must question the market chances of this product. Seems as if the product marketing guys exaggerated the launch of the thunderbolt technology.

How to connect windows laptop (vga) to thunderbolt display?
AHHH??!!!!!!  Was that your original question??   I assumed you were trying to output FROM your computer (MacBook Pro w/ Thunderbolt) to the new display and then OUT to be the video source to a DVI switcher.
    MB Pro w/TB ---> TB Display ---> mDP-to-DVI adapter ---> DVI switcher
So it seems as if it's not possible to use the thunderbolt display with the mini display port adapter to DVI you've mentioned.
I did not understand that you were trying to use other PC's into a switcher and then THAT Video source to connect INTO the TB display.   If THAT is what you're trying to do, then NO....  You can NOT use the new TB Display to be used to display "FROM" a DVI switcher (and also can NOT be used to display from other Non-TB-Apple computers).
I've also called apple. The statement was that one needs a computer with osx 10.6.x in order to connect the thunderbolt display. That makes it impossible to hook a windows pc or older mac to the new and shiny thunderbolt display.
I wonder why apple doesn't state this in their technical descriptions...?
    -ais-swiss
Actually, the state that information all over the Tech Specs on the Apple Store website.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC914LL/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Here are two different statements from that webpage:
So yes.... other NON-Apple PC's (or non-TB devices) do Not have the Thunderbolt technology (hardware/software) to be able to communicate with the TB display or other TB devices.

  • Late 2008 Mac Book Pro with Thunderbolt display: Compatibility

I have a Mac Book Pro Late 2008 (15inch) and want to buy a 27inch thunderbolt display, because in the future I will buy a mac book air (thunderbolt)...
    but for now:
1: Can I use my late 2008 MacPro with thunderbolt?
1a:If yes, which functions work, which not...
1b:If yes, how to connect? I do not have any cables so far
1c:If yes, will my resolution increase on the 27inch or will I have the resolution of the mac book? What about the future Mac Book Air? Which resolution will be?
2: If I cannot use it, is there any exchange program from Apple for old Macs against new ones? (Like for cars they have)

I have a Late 2011 MacBookPro that I bought with the stock 5400 RPM HD.  Before I did anything with it, I replaced it with a Momentus XT drive.  In my Late 2007 MBP, I have used the original 160GB 5400 RPM drive for a few months before replacing it with a 7200 RPM (non XT) drive, and the difference was noticable, but not huge.  For me, the move from 7200 RPM to 7200RPM-Hybrid was noticable, but not huge.  I would say that you won't be disappointed by goign to a hybrid drive (as long as you get the 750GB version as some of the 500GB ones had firmware issues that caused nightmares for some Mac users.
Now that I look more closely, you will probably see a fairly huge jump, as your existing drive is only negotatiating a SATA-I link, where the Momentus XT is a SATA-III drive, so it will be able to negotiate a SATA-II link to get the best performance of your controller.

  • Can Adobe Premiere run on 2013 Mac Book Pro (thunderbolt port) and display on 2010 iMac (Mini DisplayPort) using TDM. TB cable   Opt. F2 didn't work. Will a Mini Display cable work?

I need to work on Adobe Premiere on my 2013 Mac Book Pro (with thunderbolt port) and display it on my 2010 iMac (with Mini DisplayPort) using Target Display Mode (TDM). I tried using a thunderbolt cable plus Option F2, but it didn't work. Will a Mini Display cable work? Any other suggestions?

2010 iMacs do not have Thunderbolt, they have mini-display ports. You are using the wrong connection, you need a mini display port to mini display port. Please read up on what Apple says in Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
