Thunderbolt Display  & Tower (Windows)

Hi there,
I'm planning on building a Tower myself and I'd like it to be able to work with 2x Thunderbolt Displays I have.
Is it possible to make that happen?
(I'd also try to install OSx on that box, if that would work too, I'd be super happy

Not at present (I think).  You would need a video card that can drive a TB display.  For OSX you also need mac-compatible firmware flashed to that card which doesn't exist.
Note, just because a TB display has a plug that is physically compatible with mini-displayport it still won't work via mini-displayport.  You can only plug a TB devices into a TB source.

  • Dual Thunderbolt Displays in Windows 7? Retina Macbook?

I understand you cannot daisy chain thunderbolt displays in Windows 7 to have dual monitors? Is there another way to run Dual monitors? I have a mid 2012 Macbook pro with on Thunderbolt display. I see the Retina Macbook has two thunderbolt ports. If I got one of those, could use dual Thunderbolt displays then in Windows 7, and then just hook each monitor up to it's own Thunderbolt port instead of daisy chaining?

No, you still cannot drive 2 Thunderbolt Displays in Windows with the MBP Retina.
However, you can use 1 Thunderbolt display (for USB hub and LAN connection), and then use 1 Cinema display as the 2nd screen. You can chain the USB ports, but not the displays, so you do have 1 extra connection to the MBP, but that's fine.
Windows 7 will drive this setup without problems.

  • Thunderbolt Display and Windows 8.1

    I have a 2011 MBP running windows 8.1.
Since upgrading (it used to work under windows 8)my external thunderbolt display still works - but it's stuck in 640x480 mode.
Clearly this is a driver issue. Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this problem.

That's awful - the good news is something I did -re-enabled the resolution slider - so the monitor works again. The driver thing is annoying. I'm considering trying parallels - and avoiding the issue. This is defintely the last apple monitor I buy though.
Thanks for answering - I'm going to keep my ear to the ground for new drivers as well.

  • Thunderbolt display for windows

Does anyone have any idea if we could see the current or future Thuderbold displays with the ability to use them as a display for Windows, Linux or other sources like game consoles.
I want to buy a few of them ... but just cannot justify it because I can only use them with a mac. I want to get more uses out of them.
I'm PRAYING the upcoming Thunderbolt display has an optional HDMI or miniHDMI input option.... it just crazy not too.

    Hello Allan,
I appreciate your response. I have read that a Mac running Windows with Bootcamp can use TDM, so I expected it would be a matter of installing proper drivers, but, unless anybody else has had some success, I think I'm about ready to admit defeat.
I appreciate you proposing a software solution, however, ScreenRecycler only supports using a Windows PC as another display, not the other way around. I did play around with a couple other software solutions, but none of these solutions would work well once my work PC is connected to VPN.
I guess I'll continue to work off a small laptop screen while a giant 27-inch screen on the same desk goes unused. Very frustrating.

  • HT5219 Thunderbolt Display to Windows Laptops w/o Thunderbolt?

Any new adapters or docking stations on the market?
PC doesn't have Thunderbolt HW, so so looking for HDMI and VGA options.  All I've read is that they won't wake up the Thunderbolt display.
    Any suggestions for both interfaces?

I haven't found any converter for HDMI to Mini DisplayPort that will work with a Thunderbolt Display and haven't found a VGA to Displayport converter at all, though there may be one out there somewhere.
    Regards.

  • MBP Bootcamp install of USB Windows 7 , Thunderbolt Display

We need support from APPLE! BootCamp
    Here are my issues.
Like many users, I must abandon the marvelous os x, and head to the darkside -  Windows 7 for work.
I have a MBP early 2011. I must use Bootcamp, because of the resource hogging the 3d CAD programs I use. have tried to in the past with VMWARE, Parallels ect. with no luck
I have a Corsair Force GT ATA 120 gb SSD III,  installed and my optical drive removed to accommodate my original Hitachi.
Remember, not to Install that Hitachi drive, until you have used a CD only install of windows 7 onto the SSD.
Why?- You can not boot from a USB disc that I am aware of, or use an external optical drive case, for your superdrive.
This is not ok, we need the capability to install windows 7 from something other than a CD. I went to reformat my SSD I was forced to open up my MBP case again. to reinstall the Super drive. Install Windows 7, then remove my superdrive and reinstall my 500gb Hitachi.
This is a royal, pain in the butt.
If a mac air has the capabilities of installing windows 7 from a usb APPLE, please give same rights to MBP.
Additionally, my osX runs like absolute garbage on the SSD, I rarely if ever use it because of the constant pinwheel I receive, I have researched this error, with
little or no luck, using apps like TRIM seem not to help.
I also own a thunderbolt display, and the fact that there is no support on connecting it without restarting the computer is also an issue.
Bootcamp Development -should add in fan speed Control,

  • How can I automatically "retract" all windows from my Thunderbolt display back to my MacBook Air when I disconnect the display, esp if the Thunderbolt is the desktop with the white menu bar?

I am in and out of my office with my MacBook Air.  I would like to set it up so when I plug in my Thunderbolt display in the office, the Thunderbolt display has my desktop, menu bar and the open windows.  If I set the Thunderbolt display to mirror by MacBook Air it adjusts to the lower resolution of the MacBook Air, which is a waste of a cool monitor.  I can set it up as an extended desktop and drag the white menu bar to the Thunderbolt display so it displays my desktop but if I then disconnect my MacBook Air, the menu bar is absent and all the windows that were seen on that display are absent, as if it I was still attached to the larger display.  The only way around this is to go to Thunderbolt display preferences, drag the white menu bar back to the smaller display and manually drag all windows to the smaller display before disconnecting.  Doing this multiple times per day is a real pain.  Is there a way to set my MacBook Air to recognize when it is attached to the Thunderbolt display and automatically my desktop and all open windows to it and then do the same process in reverse when I unhook it?

It's definitely not supposed to work like that...when you plug the display in, it should just turn on and adjust your displays.  It works like that on my MBP.  Kind of a silly question, but do you have the MagSafe from the display plugged in your MBAir too?  Thats a requirement.  Beyond that, it should "just work."
Not sure if there is some setting to enable...i haven't seen it.  Call to support?

  • I have a new (mid-2011 27" Imac with 2 Thunderbolt ports each driving one 27" Thunderbolt display. The 3 displays work perfectly in OSX Lion but in Bootcamp 4.0 with Windows 7 (64 bit) only 2 screens come up. everything is up to date. Anyonce who can help

I have a new (mid-2011 27" Imac with 2 Thunderbolt Ports each driving one 27" Thunderbolt display.
Graphic card is AMD Radeon HD 6970M  with 2Gb of VRAM.   All works 100% in Lion but
in Bootcamp 4.0 running windows 7 Professional (64 bit) Only 2 of the 3 screens work not all three.
Tried updates, calling Apple etc. But no luck.  Windows doesn't recognize the 3rd screen while
checking on the driver in windows is tells me it's the latest and best available. ?  In VMware
Windows 7 also works fine over three screens so windows can do it. But I need it natively to
work. (i.o.w. in Bootcamp). Does Anybody know how to solve this, or if Apple is working on a
solution for this ?  It really hurts to have one of these expensive screens staring at you being dead.

  • I need help getting my Thunderbolt display to work with Windows 7 through Bootcamp.

I recently bought a thunderbolt display and it works great in my Mac environment.  But I recently added Bootcamp and Windows 7 (I need since my Broker Dealer only uses Internet Explorer).  Unfortunately, I can't seem to get Windows to recognize my Thunderbolt display.  Today, I spent 2 hours with a very kind advisor from Apple Support but we didn't have any success.
    Here's my setup:
MacBook Pro (purchased new in 2011) with i7 processor
    Thunderbolt Display
    Lion OS (all updates installed)
Bootcamp with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (all updates installed)
With the help of Apple Support, I downloaded and reinstalled (through the repair option) all the Bootcamp drivers.  I shut down my computer, plugged in the Thunderbolt display, turned it on and booted into Windows 7.  When the Windows Welcome screen appears, it shows on my Thunderbolt display for about 2-3 seconds.  But the thunderbolt quickly goes black.  My MacBook Pro changes to a 640x480 resolution and the Thunderbolt remains blacked out--with no signs of even a single flicker.  Once the computer finishes the start-up, my MacBook Pro remains in a 640x480 resolution, with no option to change the resolution (it's grayed out in Windows control panel).  If I unplug the Thunderbolt cable from my MacBook pro, the high resolution of my MacBook pro snaps back to normal.
To me, this seems like some type of driver problem but I must be missing something simple because it appears that Thunderbolt works with Bootcamp and Windows 7--based on some of the readings I've found here in the Apple support community.  I'm most appreciative of anyone's help here.

  • MBPr Windows and Thunderbolt Display

    Hi there,
I am trying to have my MBPr and Thunderbolt Display working under bootcamp with Windows 8. All the peripherals attached to the TBD are working fine but the display remains black/off. I am pretty sure that a solution exists but can't find the right. I've tried and under Windows 7 behavior still the same, whereas under MacOSx TBD display works fine.
    Thanks for you support !
    RV

I made the usb stick back when I installed windows 7 that made my imacs amd gpu see the monitor connected as it did in osx and in the same was as any other windows computer with a connected extra screen
(so I turn it on in windows display settings and maybe the amd catalyst software i forget)
when I upgraded to win8 it just used the win7 driver and it still worked fine
same when I later got te official win8 drivers from apple

  • 2nd apple thunderbolt display in not detected by Windows 8.1

Installed Windows 8.1 on a late 2013 Mac Pro.  Have two thunderbolt displays.  The 2nd display is not being detected by Windows.  There is only one display listed in device manager.  One display works fine, the river listed for it is Generic PNP display.
Any ideas on getting 2nd display to work in Windows 8.1?
    Thanks

OMG, I was just about to buy a new wireless card because I have the same problem.
Some weeks ago my wireless adapter disappeared, the card disappeared altogether even from Device manager, after I installed a new bluetooth driver and after I was connecting to my phone 3G via USB cable.
But then it came back after I left the laptop shut down and unplugged for a whole night. It worked for a few hours and after closing the lid and opening it again wireless adapter was gone again, never to come back.
I tried changing drivers, holding the power button for 20 sec to hard reset the laptop, fresh install of Windows, load BIOS defaults, and even installing Windows 10 in VHD (dual boot) and see if it will reappear there.
Always the same - the wireless adapter doesn't exist any more.
However, buetooth has been working without problems, which I find strange.
I read online about similar situations, and all answers point that the wireless card stopped working and needs to be replaced.
But @Papelinas - you say you even bought and installed a new wireless card and STILL have the same problem???
I can't believe that something in motherboard got damaged and that only wifi doesn't work...
I've had my Y2P for 6 months, and I don't really have time to send the laptop for repair for some time, I'm using it...
I guess I'll still try to buy a new card, and just hope the wireless adapter will reappear...

  • How to get Thunderbolt Display recognized in Windows 8.1 through boot camp 2013 iMac

Ok so I have got the run-around quite a few times trying to figure this enigma out.  I recently upgraded to the Haswell 2013 iMac from my 2011 iMac.  I had been using my thunderbolt display with my "old" iMac and I was running Windows 8.1 through bootcamp.  My display worked wonderfully and I had no issues.  I just upgraded from windows 8 to windows 8.1, I had no idea that boot camp "does not support windows 8.1."
When I got my new machine I migrated my entire operating system from the old computer to the new (which was way way way harder than I had anticipated).  Now it seems that almost everything works besides the thunderbolt monitor, which is not even detected.  The monitor works when running OS X, but not when running Windows 8.1.
I just wondered if anyone had already had and fixed this issue, or if it is just a waiting game unitl the new boot camp support drivers for windows 8.1 come out.
Also if anyone could explain why it worked on my old machine and not my new one I would appreciate it, I have some ideas as to why but I would appreciate any input.
    Thank you!
    -Arthur

    FIXED!
Well I just went to the NVIDIA website, downloaded the latest driver for the graphics card, installed it, and now Both monitors work.
Seems like a no brainer, but just in case this issue is a problem for other users I hope that this was helpful.
P.S.  Windows 8.1 may not be supported by boot camp yet, but the boot camp driver package for windows 8 along with the graphics card driver I downloaded made my computer work better than I expected!

  • Windows 10 in Boot Camp Thunderbolt Display

I installed the technical preview on a 27" late 2013 iMac using the most recent Boot Camp Assistant. While some listed fixes for WiFi adapter worked, I have a second display connected by DVI > Thunderbolt. I have tried disabling fast startup, a confirmed
fix for Thunderbolt input not being detected. I have also tried running AMD support installer for drivers on Windows 8.1 for Boot Camp for my iMac model, and the driver install fails. I realize it's a bit of a niche issue, but if anyone has any ideas I'd love
    to hear them.

    Hi,
According to your description, it seems a Thunderbolt driver issue or a device compatibility issue with Windows 10 Technical Preview, while we have little experience with Thunderbolt Display
So, in order to better help you, I would recommend post this issue in
