Thunderbolt Display turns off / flicker / very warm

My Thunderbolt Display 27 is connected to my MacBook Pro Late 2013. After a while it turns off, starting to flicker. Disconnecting from MacBook and reconnecting the Display works for a while again. Same problem I have with my older MacBook Pro. So I am sure its not a problem of my latest MacBook Pro.
I have tried to turn of power saving, automatically brightness adjustment, doesn't work.
The left backside of the Thunderbolt is really very warm. Maybe its a fan problem ? The Display is only two years old and I was expecting to use it at least for 6 years.
Current firmware for thunderbolt display is installed.
Is there any solution for that ?

  • Thunderbolt Display turns off randomly

I have a new Mac Mini 2011 i7 Quad CPU version.  I have a Thunderbolt 27 inch display.  I have found that the display randomly turns off and won't turn on when I use the keyboard or mouse.  This occurs when I am doing stuff on the machine, it is not a display sleep issue.  The first couple of times I had to use Remote Desktop to reboot the Mac Mini to fix the issue.  The last time it happened I removed the Thunderbolt plug from the Mac Mini and reinstalled it and this fixed the issue.  I have the latest software updates on the Mac Mini and the Thunderbolt Firmware update on the Display.
    I am running Lion 10.7.1

Well, i've just patched firmware update for Thunderbolt display from Apple customer support site. I'm sure you've done this already because it's dated 19, Sep. Well, I'll try to find the pattern anyway if the same thing happens again.
And, for your information, those happened while i was using 'Remote Desktop Connection' from MS-Office, which i set as expanded 'full screen', targeted Thun-di, (I've mentioned i'm using dual display, Dell 2311H and Thun-di above reply).
Plus, I found some interesting bug for the 'full screen feature' of RDC of MS-Office, which is sometimes got confusing which 'desktop' it should use. when i added one more desktop from 'Mission Control', ran RDC in full screen mode from 'desktop 2', it should just remained on 'desktop 2' when i switched to my original 'desktop 1'. But, when i did switch to 'desktop 1', RDC just switched to 'desktop 1' and remained in 'full screen mode'. I feel strange, 'cause the feature worked fine yesterday, but not today, and the 'Thun-di''s gone randomly.
Too many clues and multiple bugs appeared at the same time, made me confused, RDC of MS-Office, Lion, and Thun-di(oh, just added patch from Apple, TT)...
Wait for solution with fingers get crossed, haha...

  • Thunderbolt Display Turns Off/MBP Goes to Sleep in Clamshell when MagSafe unplugged

My battery is fine, but I can't use my 2011 15" 2.2ghz MBP + Thunderbolt Display in clam shell mode without being plugged into power from MagSafe. Disconnect the cable, Thunderbolt quits and MBP goes to sleep.
This drains battery by being constantly plugged in.
I updated my the TB firmware today when prompted. Problem existed before and after.
Let me know what's up, very annoying.

The internal battery could handle the extra power needed when using the external display, but OS X (or maybe the firmware) doesn't allow clamshell mode without external power.
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131>
If it did, the extra discharging and charging would mean replacing the battery sooner.

  • White Stripes/Display Turning Off

Last night I noticed a bunch of white stripes flicker for about a quarter of a second on my display. This happened multiple times. I shut it down with no problems.
Today I had no problems until everything froze. I could move the mouse, but it would not change from a text cursor. I manually shut it down.
I turned it back on, after a few minutes I had the same issue.
I turned it off manually, unplugged the power for about a minute, plugged it back in and turned it on. After a few minutes the white stripes flickered. I decided to back up everything. After about 10 minutes, during the backup process, the screen went black. I could feel that the computer was still on, but the display was black. I manually turned it off.
I have now been on for about 30 minutes with no problems. The computer was very hot when the display went black. Is it possible that this is an overheating problem?
    Any suggestions?

The iBook has a seperate display dimming (display turns off) and sleep mode timers. Go into the system preferences>energy saver to set these preferences. When your display turns off you should be able to reawaken it by pressing a key on the keyboard. Turning it off is not the best solution. If the problem happens while you are still using it or it doesn't awaken when you hit a key then you may need to post here again.

  • L305D-S5935 Unresponsive After Display Turns Off

I have a L305D-S5935 running Windows Vista and it becomes unresponsive after the display turns off as set to do so in the power settings.  I cannot push any key or button or move around on the mouse pad to get it to turn back on.  This is very frustrating and the only way to get it to come back on is to to a hard restart.

Turn off your laptop, unplug all wires, remove the battery, and hold the power button for thirty seconds. Afterwards, reattach the battery and connections.
    Then reinstall TVAP.

  • T42 Display turns off after moving

    Hello everybody!
I´ve got a problem with my Thinkpad T42 (2373fwg), XP prof. with the latest updates running. After installing the latest drivers for display (ati) and for "ThinkVantage Active Protection System " the display turns off immediately after moving the Thinkpad. I can turn the display on again only by reboot. The error appears even in a second after reboot, so it doesn´t concern to windows. The system doesn´t crash, it´s only the display. The problem might concern to the shock sensor, but I don´t know how to solve it.
Does anyone of you has an idea?
    Thank you and kind regards
    Bill

I have a similar problem: T42 (2373-5wg) Screen blanks. At first screen blanking was rare and seemed to happen when moving the pc, but now the screen blanks within 1-3 minutes after turning on the laptop, even if the computer is left untouched after being turned on.
It is not OS related as the blanking appears even when in BIOS setup or booted on a liveOS CD.
I can't tell for sure if the system crashes or not as the display goes blank (doh!), however, I have seen no reports of registered crashes in the visible part of the boot process.
The screen blanking appears quicker (or even instantly) if the computer is warm (e.g. turned off just before being turned on).
Blanking appears simultaneously on the LCD and on any attached external monitor, so I believe this rules out a defective LCD, backlight or inverter board.
I'm thinking it's a failing graphics adapter or system board, or maybe a loose connection that causes a component to overheat and fail. But I don't know which or how to fix it.
It IS out of warranty, of course. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Niels
EDIT: It seems this could be yet another case of badly soldered BGA chips that seems to be troubling the T4x series:

  • Display Turns Off After Opening Computer

I have a very annoying problem of my display turning off and not turning on until I restart my Macbook Pro by holding down the power button.
For example, I will close my computer (power cord not plugged in) and it will go to sleep. If for some reason the computer turns on while it is still closed (this happens when I pick it up/move it around sometimes) and I then open the computer, the display will be on momentarily and then turn off leaving me with a black screen. The only way to turn the display on again is to restart my computer.
Another example: I might close the computer with the power cord in. I will then unplug the computer (still closed) and walk somewhere, then open the computer. The display will be on for a few seconds and then turn off, leaving me again to restart my computer.
The third example is the worst. Sometimes with the power cord still in, sometimes with no power cord, the display will just be blank when I open the computer.
With all of the above occurrences, I know the computer is running because I can see the caps lock key light change when I press it.
Does this make any sense? Please help me, I will be going to college on Tuesday and I would really like to have it so I don't have to restart my computer every time before class.
My display was not always this way, it has just been like this for a few months.

Im surfing this kinda of problemes. Its insteresting your computer turn on the screen after restart, but there no much good news for us in here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1478474&tstart=0

  • Yoga display turns off after 1 minute

I'm having an annoying problem with my new Yoga related to the display and have not seen any other posts with a similar complaint so perhaps this is a simple fix that I'm just not able to sort out on my own. My display turns off after 1 minute of inactivity. The only means for changing behavior like this that I am aware of is through the Control Panel Power Options. My settings for "turn off the display" are 10 minutes on battery and Never while plugged in (note screen shot attached). Regardless of my settings, the screen turns off after 1 minute. I've changed the settings to multiple configurations and restarted with no change in behavior. Perhaps there's some other settings area, maybe something specific to Lenovo that I'm not aware of (since this is my first Lenovo laptop). Anyone with similar problems or insight?

This may be a Windows 8 issue. I finally fixed this problem by identifying the screen saver as the issue (and I wasn't using a screen saver). Type "lock the computer" into the search box after clicking the search charm, which brings up the screen saver dialog box. Mine was set to 1 minute, though I'd never set it myself. If you can't change it, choose a screen saver and you should be able to do so (and can then switch back to no screen saver). BUT, here's the problem. Other things you install (or settings within things you install) can apparently change and override whatever you type in for the delay time. Try applying your new time and exiting from the dialog box, then open it back up again. I was finding that it kept going back to 1 minute. To reset things so that you can get control again, type "user accounts" into the search box and when the dialog box comes up, choose "Reset Security Policies". Then you can go back to the screen saver dialog and successfully change the delay time. • W520 - now changes to "projector only" whenever display turns off in power save mode

I have my W520 in a dock with an external monitor. The display is configured to Extend - the external monitor is primary, and the desktop extends onto the W520 screen. I don't have a screen saver. I turn off the display after 30 minutes of inactivity. Until recently both the laptop and monitor screens would turn off after 30 minutes, and then both resume when I moved the mouse or pressed a key.
Recently, the system has started changing to "Projector Only" when the display turns off. After resuming from power save mode, only the external monitor activates, and the W520 screen is disabled. I have to use Fn-F6 to switch back to "Extend" to re-activate the laptop screen.
I have rebooted and re-saved the power plan.
Why has this happened, and how do I fix it?

    Hi, timg11
I have a few questions so that I may gain a better grasp of this issue:
    1) What is your machine type and model? You can find this information on the bottom of your machine. It should be in format XXXX-XXX.
    2) What is your operating system?
    3) Does this issue occur is the computer is not in the docking station? (Please try if you haven't already).
    Thanks in advance,
    Adam

Can I run two thunderbolt display monitors off of my new 27" iMac?

Yes, the new iMac has two Thunderbolt ports. Plus Thunderbolt can be daisy chained thru external Thunderbolt drives and displays that have multiple ports.
    For more info, see >  Apple - Thunderbolt: Next-generation high-speed I/O technology.
Although I'm not sure exactlly what Arrangement selections you will be offered in the Displays Preference, because I have not tested that setup myself...

My ipod stills pauses when the display turns off, even though, my headphones are correctly attached (or flushed)

Does this happen still when you use another set of headphones? Have you check to make sure the headphone jack is clean and clear of debris?  If so, the jack may be faulty or damaged meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service/repair.

  • Windows 8.1 Screen Locking at Display Turn Off (instead of only at Sleep)

    Hi All,
I am having this issue with clients running Windows 8.1 Enterprise, which we are planning to deploy later on this summer.
We currently have a GPO setup for managing the power settings on our staff computers:
This GPO sets computers to sleep after 1 hour, but turn off the monitor after 5 minutes of inactivity
On our Windows 7 systems, the policy applies correctly and if our staff uses their computer before 60 minutes of inactvity (before they go to sleep),
the screens will just turn back on without prompting for login.
I have noticed however on our Windows 8.1 test computers, in the same OU, which receive this policy, that after 5 minutes when the screen goes off, if a staff member attempts to use their computer they will be prompted for a password even though the
unit was not in sleep mode.
Further more, I've noticed that on the Windows 8.1 Systems, I am able to override the "Require a Password on Wakeup" setting using the metro interface, as pictured below (the setting does change in power options as seen below), and does stay in
the No setting even if I run gupdate and reboot.
Any idea how to keep the Require Password for waking up, but not just for computer with the screen powered down?
(I should also not screen savers are not being used)

    Hi,
You can tried also set the item Sleep: After 60 min to see what's going on.
On my laptop, once I configure this, the display turns off without lock the computer.
