Thunderbolt Display with 2011 Macbook Pro 17" issues
When I first purchased the display, it would not work then randomly detected and was fine for sometime. I used it within both osx and windows 7 via bootcamp without issue. I went away for a few weeks and when i returned it would randomly detect within mac then shutoff after a minute or so, rinse and repeat. When i tired in bootcamp it would sometimes detect at boot then shutoff after a minute or so. I gave up after a nights trouble shooting and when i tried again in the morning the display would not detect at all.
I've tried disabling auto adjust brightness, altered the power settings to disable the shutdown of hdd and displays, reseting the pram and vram numerous times, resetting the smc, installing and trying the different modes using gfx card status, updating firmware and all software, reinstalling osx.
I am very frustated at this point and any assistance would be appreciated.
When you detect the displays, does it show that the HP is number 1 and Samsung is number 2?
You can detect displays by pushing Command(⌘)+F2 or by clicking Option when in the Displays Settings.

I am using duel thunderbolt displays with a MacBook Pro. I only have the option to have sound come from one or the other. Has anyone thought of making the left channel come from both speakers on the left Monitor and the same of the right? If yes, how is that done? The MacBook Pro could even be a center channel if configured in that order.
See the following thread on the same topic:
2 Thunderbolt displays MBP = sound coming from both displays? -

Any input would be appreciated
I've a 15" late 2011 MacBook Pro and an Apple Thunderbolt Display and I run in clamshell mode at least 90% of the time... what sort of problems are you having?

Will the new 10.6.8 update fix SATA3 issues related with 2011 MacBook Pros?
Will the new 10.6.8 update fix SATA3 issues related with 2011 MacBook Pros?
It is against TOU to speculate on these message board. Suggest you post your question on the Mac Rumors site.
As I already stated, there is no 10.6.8 update. If there was, it would be listed in Software Update. -
How do i use an external display with my macbook pro?
How do I use an external display with a macbook pro?
Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example. Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized. Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

Having hard drive problems with 2011 macbook pro
Hey all,
I am having some hard drive issues with a 2011 Macbook Pro running OS X Mavericks.
How it happened: I was browsing the web when suddenly I got the spinny-wheel-of-death. The spinny wheel of death stuck around for much longer than usual, and eventually my computer wouldn't even respond to mouse input (the mouse wouldn't move). Nothing worked, so I did a hard reset of my computer. When I rebooted the machine, it took me into "Recovery Disk Mode".
Here are the diagnostics that I've done: In "Recovery Disk Mode", I have the option to use the Disk Utility, which I have done. My main volume, called "Macintosh HD" is grayed out - and not mountable. When I run "first aid" on it, it is not able to verify the disk because of an "Invalid B-tree node size". It then tells me to repair the disk. I have tried repairing the disk, but it fails - and that is not entirely unexpected because all of the forum posts that I have read up until now say that Disk Utility cannot repair this specific type of error.
3rd party software I have tried: Based on the forum posts that I have read, Disk Warrior is especially capable at fixing this kind of error, so I went to my local computer shop, purchased the software, and booted into it. Disk Warrior did not recognize my drive, and did not even show it in the list of available options.
Other things I have tried: I purchased a Seagate external drive, and I tried to use Disk Utility to copy the contents from my MBP's hard drive over to the external drive, but when I do so, "Disk Utility" tells me that "Recovery partition restores can only be done on GPT partition maps." I have also had it give me another error message where it says it "cannot verify source - error 254".
Additionally, I have seen around the internet that many people try using "fsck" to fix this issue, but I haven't been able to find a good explanation of the proper steps when using "fsck", nor how to specify to the "fsck" program that I want it to fix my "Macintosh HD" volume. I've opened up the terminal, and gone into the "/dev/" folder, but I don't know which item in that folder, or any other folder, would properly lead down the path to my "Macintosh HD" volume. Also, the man pages seem to be of little help here.
One option I would like to try, but I have not been able to, is to try putting my MBP into Target Disk Mode, and see if my desktop machine (a Dell) can see it. The problem here is that my Dell only has USB ports - no Firewire, and obviously no Thunderbolt ports. I would need to find a way to plug my MBP into my Dell while it is in Target Disk Mode, but from what I can tell, that's impossible if I don't have a Firewire or Thunderbolt port on my Dell.
So, now having explained everything I have tried, can y'all give me any advice on how I can recover my drive without completely repartitioning it? Although most of my important data and files are located on cloud services, there are definitely some files on the drive that I don't have backed up, and I would like to recover the drive without losing those files. What suggestions can you give me? Thanks!Yes, BUT...
... there are many problems that are really easy to eliminate by replacing the Hard drive, including ones that have nothing to do with actual Drive Hardware failure. These include corrupted install of Mac OS X, its EFI partition, clobbered partition tables, or the appearance of Bad Blocks in a critical area.
Any of these problems can sometimes be eliminated by re-initializing the entire drive and writing Zeroes, and re-installing from scratch. The trouble is, this process takes hours to complete, and is not guaranteed to be successful -- you may still need a new drive after all that effort.
I learned from my Plumber that consumers have no appetite for solutions that might work, and detest return visits for any related problems whatsoever. You or your friend may have had your drive replaced, not because it actually failed, but because the situation was troublesome, and the provider thought you would not tolerate anything less than a crisp, complete fix on the first attempt. And based on the cost of technician time, it may have even been cheaper that way. -
Can I run two displays with my Macbook Pro?
I have the early 2011 Macbook Pro, with the 256mb ram on the graphics card, and what I think was the first generation "Thunderbolt" video output. I'm currently running a single 27"Cinema Display using a mini-display port adaptor out. I'm wondering if there's a way to drive two monitors with it - say a Thunderbolt display and the current Cinema Display? What configuration of displays, adaptors, and/or cables would I need to do this?
Thanks!I suggest reviewing information here:

WIP: My adventures with 2011 MacBook Pro and Windows 8.1 including seconday HDD
So I've just lost about 3 days of my life trying to install Windows 8.1 (my preferred) operating system on a Late 2011 MacBook Pro.
I feel that I've learnt a lot and hopefully can share my experiences to speed a few of you along the process. This is my own experience please let me know if anything I have documented is not true and I will revise for completeness
What my initial goal was to have a dual HD set up with an SSD running both Mac OSX and Windows 8.1 (via Bootcamp) with a 2ndry HD in places of the optical (DVD) drive for shared storage.
I have tried all/some of the following:
Win 8.1 ISO from the MS site: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
USB created using Rufus for Bios and EFI boot
DVD created using Windows 8.1 (can't remember how)
Yosemite USB created using: Create a bootable installer for OS X Mavericks or Yosemite - Apple Support
There are 2 main options when installing Windows:
Bios
EFI
Both have different pros and cons, which Im going to try and document here:
Bios
Full driver support via Bootcamp download
Slower (mainly boot time, not by much though)
Not quite as "native" as some may prefer
Limited number of partitions??
EFI
Fast
Native
Does not support video driver properly (no dual screen)
Audio does not work (says Failed to start device)
Here are some random facts I know
Windows DVD will only boot from optical drive when connected internally. If plugged in via external USB it stops at black screen with flashing cursor and doesnt progress
Using 5HT-2a's method on Redit (see below) and the EFI install, I get the Cx0000005 cannot find source media error and cannot install
Hacking the Bootcamp tool to create a Windows 8 ISO with all the drivers works (see link below) but when using it in EFI it crashes repeatedly during install so you never can complete the process (I think this is due to the video drivers) and therefore can't run Bootcamp assistant thus get proper trackpad support
Using lion10's method (below) for tweaking a standard Mac partitioned HD I was able to get past the cannot install Windows error ("windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk is of the GPT partition style") and install Windows using EFI
Best guides/links I have found:
lion10's method:The ultimate way to install Windows 8.x in (U)EFI mode on Apple systems
5HT-2a's method: http://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/2fy3be/by_popular_demand_my_better_than_boo tcamp_guide/
skipsizemore's method: Can't install Windows 8 x64 on late 2013 MBP with1TB SSD
Bootcamp drivers 2 versions depending on Mac:
Older Macs: Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5621
Newer Macs (most 2013+): Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5640
Bootcamp Assistant Hack for USB creation on older Macs: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1680652There is an additional parameter required if you are using Yosemite during code signing (-deep I think, but cant remember)What I ended up doing (so far)
I'm not 100% sure of the state of my disk when I got to where I ended up but I had previous completed the GDisk and DISKPART methods from 5HT-2a and lion10's methods. I was using a 128gb SSD
I then decided to start from the top (as I had previous installed Win 8.1 on the original HD using DVD)
So I ran the Yosemite installer (via USB) and used the partition tab in Disk Utility to repartition the disk into 2 partitions, 1 for OSX and 1 (ExFat/NTFS) for Windows
I then booted in Bios (Windows, not EFI) using the Windows 8.1 DVD using the DVD plugged in internally (wouldnt work using USB enclosure)
Installed Windows to the partition I created (probably the 4th one)
After Windows installed, ran the Bootcamp set up program
Reran Yosemite installer and installed Yosemite
Swapped out the optical drive for a larger HD (7200rpm) and formatted it with HFS+ -
Flickering problem with 2011 macbook pro unibody
I have a 17" 2011 Macbook Pro Unibody and when I connect the computer to the TV via Mini Display Port (HDMI), the TV is either not receiving any signal, or screen is flickering, however, my other 13" 2010 Macbook Pro Unibody has no problem when connected to the TV. Does anyone know the reason to the problem?
I had the same problem, and I cant say which fixed it, but i deleted the plist file then reset the pram and it worked
Quit System Preferences and delete...
Users/yourname/Library/Preferences /com.apple.systempreferences.plist
and to reset the pram reset the puter and before the chime hold alt+command+p+r and keep holding until you hear the chime a second time...
really hope this helps -

Greastest possible performace with 2011 macbook pro and 2008 airport express
What setting create the fastest possible speeds with a airport express with a brand new 2011 macbook pro taking use of the 450 Mbits/s. For that, Apple changed their Airport card and also installed 3 antennas (instead of 2 before), something indispensabie to be able simultaneously to use 3 channels of 150 Mbits/s.
Your router is likely fine.
You should first update the Airport firmware for it, simply run the Airport and Software update.
See this
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3802
And then go to your System Preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP/IP and for IPv6 turn : OFF
Reboot and see how that goes.
When you connect to the router it gives you a lease on a IP address, if your computer's time and date are off this could make the lease expire and you connect and then get disconnected. So check that, see if it holds.
Reset your SMC and NVRAM/PRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Go to your <home> /Library/Preferences and drag the
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
file to the desktop and reboot, it will be rebuilt, hit your Sytem Preferences and reset them.
drag the useless file on the desktop to the trash.
