Thunderbolt Display with mini-displayport Sapphire HD 7550 video card

I have a Mac Pro 5,1, Model A1289, made in June 2012.  It came with a Nvidia Quadro 400 graphics card, but I want to purchase a Sapphire HD 7550 3GB Mac Edition graphics card in order to use a 27 inch Thunderbolt Display.  I know the Sapphire 7550 card will work in the Mac Pro version I have.
The description of the Sapphire 7550 card says it has two mini-display ports.  Will the 27 inch Thunderbolt Display work with this card?
I have read information on various forums that suggest it will work and others that say it will not.
Will a Thunderbolt Display work with a video card that has mini-display ports or does it have to specifically say it is a Thunderbolt port?
Does anyone have a clear answer?

  • How to connect a 2009 Cinema Display with mini DisplayPort to modern card

    Hello:
I am ready to install a new NVidia Quadro K5000 for Mac in my not so old Mac Pro 4,1 (2009). I already installed Mountain Lion (10.8.3) as required. The problem is that the Mac Pro came with a Led Cinema Display which apparently only can be connected with a mini DisplayPort plug and the graphics card only have DVi and DP 1.2. I tried to find an adapter but the ones I have find are minidp male to DVI female and obviously I need a minidp female to DVI or DP female.
    I will appreciate any help.

The fifth and sixth item on this page are DisplayPort male to Mini DisplayPort female "Extension cables". Under US$6 plus shipping from a reputable seller:

  • Can I connect a 24" Cinema Display with mini DisplayPort in to HDMI out?

I have a 24" LED Cinema Display that I want to use with a new 15" Retina MacBook Pro I will soon be purchasing. Using cable adaptors, would it be possible use the new Macbook Pro's HDMI port to connect to this Cinema Display? I understand that this does not work with the newer Thunderbolt displays because Thunderbolt only adapts in one direction, but since this is an older Mini Displayport monitor would it work? My goal is to keep both Thunderbolt ports available for storage I/O untill Apple releases an update to the Thunderbolt display later this or next year. Thanks for your advice!

Yes, in this scenario, I'd connect the display to one of the Thunderbolt ports and use a USB hub for additional I/O. Here's my current I/O needs:
    1) esata (with port multiplication)
    2) gigabit ethernet
    3) firewire 800
    4) USB keyboard
    5) 3-port USB hub (iOS, bluetooth charger, misc USB2 or 3)
    6) monitor
My current plan is to use
    1) thunderbolt 1 - display
    2) thunderbolt 2 - firewire 800
    3) USB3 1 - esata
    4) USB3 2 - USB3 hub - gigbit ethernet and all other USB devices
Does this seem like a resaonable set-up in terms of maxing I/O bandwidth? My main concern is if the USB2 devices on the USB3 hub will throttledown my gigabit ethernet speeds.
    Thanks for your advice!

  • Connect 24" Cinema Display with Mini DisplayPort to new 21.5' iMac

I'm having a bit of an issue attempting to connect my new 21.5' iMac to my Apple Cinema Display. The display has a mini DV port that used to connect into my MacBook Pro but now I see there is no such port on the iMac.  They clearly state they offer support for it but I don't see a way to connect. Any suggestions?

Well, a bit confused here, maybe TB...
    http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/
    19. How do I connect my Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac when I have other Thunderbolt devices connected?
When connecting a Mini DisplayPort display or a display using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt peripheral (except as described in question 14), make sure the display is connected at the end of the Thunderbolt chain. You can use only one Mini DisplayPort device in the Thunderbolt chain.
Note: Systems with more than one Thunderbolt port, like an iMac, can have more than one Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor connected with a Mini DisplayPort adapter connected as each Thunderbolt port can support one Mini DisplayPort display.

    Hi Gilly,
I have no proof, but I think it will not work with an adapter, only Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt.

  • Hi - How do I connect an HDTV as a second monitor to Thunderbolt display with macbook pro in clamshell mode?

I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro in clamshell mode connected to a Thunderbolt Display with the built in Thunderbolt cable. I want to then connect an HDTV via the Thunderbolt port at the back of the Thunderbolt display. I already had a  cable that I thought would work which turns out to be a MiniDisplay port to HDMI cable and therefore not compatible with Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt (Mini DisplayPort not being the same technology although it uses the same port - although I'm not an expert !!) So far a web search has provided me with the only solution being using a Thunderbolt dock or storage that has multiple Thunderbolt ports and then  using that to daisychain inbetween the Thunderbolt Diplay and the HDTV. The cheapest solution I can find for this would be about £250. Surely not ??!!!!
Many thanks for any comments - Nik

You could also use aThunderbolt dock with HDMI, such as:

  • Thunderbolt display to Macbook displayport adapter

I have a nice new 2010 Macbook Pro 17" with mini displayport. I want to buy an Apple Display but the only ones still being sold are the new Thunderbolt displays.
I've carefully read all the available info and came to the conclusion there is up to now NO way to connect the displayport with the thunderbolt display... or is there?
Is there already an adaptor on the market or am I just wishful thinking?

I am having the same issue.  I have a 2009 Macbook with a Mini DVI and want to order an Apple monitor and would like to get the Thunderbolt display for now and then hopefully upgrade my computer down the road.
Any suggestions here would be nice.  The solution I am looking for is Macbook or Mini DVI to Thunderbolt.
I do understand that I will not get the functionality of the Thunderbolt, but only need the video capability.
    Any suggestions would be helpful!
I know that the answer has been no solution, but hopefully, a solution is coming.
Otherwise all Apple labtop pre-2011 will have to buy the LED and hope that there computer lasts.  Otherwise if the labtop goes, not only do you have to replace the labtop, you will also be stuck with an old 27 LED Monitor, and have to purchase a new Thunderbolt 27 Monitor?
    Doesn't make any sense?
There has to be an adapter in the work?

  • Use thunderbolt display with ps3

    Hi
I've seen some threads with the same question, but there old and no complete answers.
So I'm asking again.. Is there way to use thunderbolt display with playstation 3?

A Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter can connect a HDMI display to a Thunderbolt port.  It does not work in the other direction.  If the PS3 has no Thunderbolt port, you can't use a Thunderbolt display.  There are no adapters or converters that can help.

  • Using Thunderbolt Display with Alienware Laptop

I want to also use my thunderbolt display with a m18x alienware laptop which has HDMI out and a mini display port.  Is there any way I can use this display with this laptop either directly or with an adapter?
    Thanks

I don't think so, as far as I am aware the connection between the system and the Thunderbolt display has to be a thunderbolt connection.  There are reports that even pre-Thunderbolt Mac systems with a mini-display port don't work.

  • Can I connect MacMini 2009 to Thunderbolt Display with Adapter Cable

Can I connect MacMini 2009 to Thunderbolt Display with Adapter Cable (Mini Display to Thunderbolt Adapter)

    Sorry but no you can't.
Only Macs with ThunderBolt ports can be used with the ThunderBolt Display and the 2009 Mac Mini doesn't have a ThunderBolt port.
Which computers can I use with my Thunderbolt display?

  • Purchase Help: iMac 2011 vs Thunderbolt Display   Mac Mini 2011

    Hello,
I purchased Thunderbolt display with Mac mini 2011. I experienced a lot of graphic issues with Mac mini when I connected to Thunderbolt display. I exchanged Mac mini 3 times but the same result. The Thunderbolt display is working fine with MacBook Pro 2011.
I'm going to return both Thunderbolt display and Mac mini and interested to get iMac. Is there any differences between iMac and Thunderbolt display + Mac mini 2011? i.e., in technology, release update cycle, features etc? My main intention to buy Thunderbolt display is to use with both Mini and MacBook Pro.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know why you are surprised at the similar sizes of the 27-inch iMac, the 27-inch Cinema Display, and the 27-inch Thunderbolt display.  The 27-inch iMac came first, and the others are "monitor-only" products that seem to use the same LCD panel(s).
As to a current 27-inch iMac vs. a current 27-inch Thunderbolt display,
    * The iMac serves as a standalone computer, and can also serve as a dumb monitor for an external computer that has a Thunderbolt port.  When operating as a dumb monitor, the iMac only serves as a monitor; it does not offer breakout connections to USB 2.0, Firewire 800, or Gigabit Ethernet.
    * The Thunderbolt display is a dumb monitor for an external computer that has a Thunderbolt port.  It also serves as a breakout box for USB 2.0, Firewire, 800, and Gigabit Ethernet connections (which is convenient if your main machine is a laptop; you can do all of your docking with one Thunderbolt cable + one power cable).
