Thunderbolt dvi

I have a new 15" macbook pro and have used it for months with a VGA projector...however, I am unable to get it to work with any DVI LCD monitor (tried Samsung, NEC, and ACER). In startup the second screen shows for a while, and the in the setup sequence, it goes black and is gone. The monitor preferences do not know that a second monitor is attached and neither does the "about this mac" detailed graphics/displays tab.

I fear that the thunderbolt connector is interfering with the DVI passthrough?

There is a solution. Currently there is only a problem if you are using Thunderbolt->HDMI and then a HDMI->DVI adapter. If you use a direct adapter Thunderbolt->DVI it works (as it does in my case).
The problem mentionend in my post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2776495&tstart=0) affects the issue HDMI->DVI (as I had to learn). Hopefully Apple will fix that soon.

  • Thunderbolt + DVI chained monitors on Macbook Pro

    Hi All,
I'm a software engineer, and I work on building distributed systems.  I usually have my IDE window open on my Thunderbolt display and several terminal/ssh windows open on my MBP's display.  I'm getting to the point where I'm connecting to too many nodes to fit them onto my MBP display.  I have a spare Acer monitor I previously had connected via a DVI->Thunderbolt adapter cable to my MPB.  I only have 1 thunderbolt port in my MBP, and I've tried the following configuration. Unfortunately, my Acer monitor doesn't receive any video from the MBP.  Is it possible to have 2 external monitors with the following configurations.
    Acert--(DVI + Thunderbolt adapter)---> Thunderbolt display----> MBP
Where --> is the male adapter of the cable.
    Thanks in advance!
    Todd

Anyone?  This seems like it should work.  It's my understanding that thunderbolt is just a comm's bus, so I'm suprised the the monitor didn't "just work".  I'm not sure what else I need to do, does this require special hardware?
    Thanks,
    Todd

  • 2011 MBP + Thunderbolt + DVI 30" Display

    Hi,
Trying to attach one or two monitors to my 2011 MBP but have run up against a wall.
    1) My one Thunderbolt port is attached to a Sonnet Thunderbolt-to-CardBus adapter. The adapter only has one Thunderbolt port, so no possiblilty of daisy-chaining.
    2) I want to hook up a 30" NEC 2560 x 1600 DVI display (and if possible a 23" ACD as well)
    3) There do not seem to be any Thunderbolt Hubs or Splitters available yet. Am I missing something?
    4) The only solution I can see is to use a USB-to-DVI box. Took a look at the StarTech model which supports the high resolution. Is this my only option? What are others doing in this situation?
Can't wait till Thunderbolt is more widely adopted and the cable/hubs/enclosures/etc finally become more widely available.
(FYI- The Sonnet Thunderbolt-to-Cardbus adapter is great. I've got a 10-bay eSATA raid hooked up via this and it is WAY faster than FW800)
    Thank you...

Yes by running a USB cable from the Mac to the HUB input port on the display.
The product disscription states the cable has connectors on it to connect to USB.

  • Is there a thunderbolt-dvi cable for the ipadmini

I have an older 23" Cinema Display that works fine, connected with USB 2 to a Mac aluminum keyboard, would love to be able to connect my ipadmini to it, and use the aluminum keyboard for typing. Does such a thing exist?

No iPad has thunderbolt on it.

  • Thunderbolt port not working as dvi in New iMac, is there any fix for it?. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 2494 SW

Just bought the new iMac, also bought apple's mini dvi adapter, when connecting to Samsung SyncMaster 2494sw i get a snow kind of pattern and sometimes let me see apple desktop through it, i tried changing resolutions but nothing, is it a software issue?

Well my friend, after 3 1/2 agonizing hours at he apple store, those "genious" declare that iMac came with defective thunderbolt/dvi to extra monitor , not mine, ALL OF THE NEW iMACS!!!!, shame on apple man, i had to spend 300 extra dls buying a new monitor with hdmi input to solve this crap that apple just did, is not fear coming out with a new product that can handle something so simple. i wish i could report this issue to someone that hears it and make something about it since i do not think this is a minor issue since this new iMac main feature was the thunderbolt port

  • Is there a way to adapt my DVI/VGA monitor to Thunderbolt?

I've recently purchased a MacBook Pro, and have been considering external monitor options. Unfortunately, the only Thunderbolt monitors out there right now are made by Apple (not unfortunate in itself), are about the size of Colorado, and cost about $1000.
I have a recently-purchased (this past summer) Acer 17" flatscreen connected to my old MDD G4 minitower (which I'm slowly easing into retirement) and am curious to know if it's possible to adapt it to the Thunderbolt port on the MacBook Pro -- or if it's possible to adapt any similar VGA/DVI monitor? If so, what type of adapter hardware is necessary? I've done a bit of rummaging around on Google, and have found this adapter dongle: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232039 -- which may or may not be the correct adapter.
As Captain Kirk was fond of asking: "Ideas, gentlemen?"
    Thanks in advance, folks.

If your monitor has a DVI input port, you can get a Thunderbolt>DVI adapter at a reasonable price from Monoprice. Under $7 and it should work like a champ.
    Good luck,

    Hi,
My Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retain 13" is connected to the Samsung 24" Samsung via Thunderbolt/DVI connector.
Upon wake up from sleep mode, the Samsung monitor displays a static screen.
Any idea what the cause maybe and how to fix it? - Right now I have to unplug and plug back the thunderbolt to fix the issue which I find annoying to do. Any better solution out there?
    Thanks alot!

    In a word, yes.

  • DVI Adapter for QHD displays?

    Hi everybody
I'd like to ask how to connect a non-apple 2560x1440 display to my MacBook Pro Retina. It's supposed to connect via a MiniDisplayPort-DVI adapter, but this has a built-in limitation of 1900x1200. Apple has an adapter for higher resolutions, the Dual-Link DVI adapter, but it looks as if it needs two cables from the screen to work, and my screen only connects via the DVI cable. I don't want to spend 100$ buying the adapter only to learn that it won't work with my screen. What to do? Does anyone know of any non-apple Thunderbolt-DVI adapters that support 2560x1440 resolution? I've tried an HDMI adapter as well, but that's the same problem, the screen also only runs 1920x1080 when connected this way.
    Best regards

Actually after thinking about it, the immediate solution is likely a short DVI extension cord combined with the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. I would prefer a small Apple adapter to ship with the display however, much in the same way as the DB-15 adapter shipped with the VGA version of the old LCD Studio Display, or at least make one for sale. Guess Apple is leaving this up to third parties as usual.
The Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter would not work in this case as it is a male (Mini DisplayPort) to female (DVI) adapter. The new 24" Cinema Display has a non-removable cable ending in a male (Mini DisplayPort). As a male plug will not connect to a male plug it will not work.
I am sure soon enough various third-parties like Gefen, Griffin, and Belkin will come up with suitable adapters which do have the right genders. It is somewhat disappointing Apple have not done this themselves as I am sure plenty of Mac Pro owners are also salivating over this new display.
Arguably, Apple are repeating the same mistake they made with the ACD (Apple Cinema Display) connector and making it much harder and more expensive to use their displays with non Apple computers. That is they should have stuck with a standard DisplayPort connector rather than the esoteric Mini DisplayPort.
I equally hope someone comes up with Mini DisplayPort to (big) DisplayPort adapters as well.
On a totally different topic, I was also surprised and disappointed Apple did not switch to 16:9 displays for these new products (they are all still 16:10). The rest of the industry has already started switching to 16:9 displays and the clear trend is that 16:10 is on its way out. Still, the black border of these Apple displays does very conveniently hide the blank pixels (when playing a 16:9 video).

  • HDMI/DVI adaptor to VGA on Monitor - No Picture

Same with Thunderbolt/DVI adaptor to VGA on monitor. Is it the adaptor to DVI/VGA cord that is making the problem?
System Information sees the Monitor(Sony Bravia TV)
Display Preferences sees my dual display set up
The computer acts as if I have two screens running
But no picture on the monitor with the signal path described above

Welcome to the wonderful world of copy protection.
Your display may not be on the "approved" list, or was removed from it.
Apple's newer Mac lines include a form of digital copy protection that will prevent protected media, such as DRM-infused iTunes movies, from playing back on devices that aren't compliant with the new priority protection measures.
The Intel-developed technology is called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) and aims to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across a variety of display connectors, even if such copying is not in violation of fair use laws.
Apple has apparently acquired a license for the technology and is now using it across its lines to to prevent transmission of purchased iTunes content to devices that don't include support for HDCP.
The problem can often be solved by using an HDMI to Component Video adapter.  Many believe that Component Video will give you a better picture than HDMI without any of the hassles of HDCP.

  • DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort

    Hello,
I'm a Windows user but getting a rMBP 15". I was wondering which would be the best way to hookup an external monitor to the MacBook?
I have a high-end 27" monitor with 2560x1440 resolution (LG 27EA83)  that has dual-link DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort connectors. Since I can get a Thunderbolt DVI connector for the rMBP, but the laptop also has HDMI and DisplayPort connectors as well, which one of these would suited the best to connect the monitor to the rMBP?
Since I have no speakers, at this point I'm only focusing on display quality and don't care for audio.
    Thanks.
PS: In case if I were also concerned about audio, would you recommend HDMI or DisplayPort?

Conveniently, I did order a DVD-D cable by sheer luck. I just picked the first one that had male connectors at both ends.
Now that I've got that in place, I seem to only be able to get a max resolution of 19290 x 1080 according to the options I see in the Display control panel. I've got the DVI-D cable out from the monitor and into a DVI to mini-display port adapter that connects to a Thunderbolt port on the rMPB.
I think the display is now a little sharper than when I was using the HDMI connector, but that could just be my imagination.
Time to start Googling this to see if I can sort out higher resolutions.
I had no idea there was so much variation in cable type when it came to this stuff.
    Thanks for your help!
UPDATED: I finally did what should have in the first place and looked up the specs on the monitor I purchased. 1920 x 1080 is the highest resolution the monitor offers. I can live with that. It's still nearly 2x as large as my rMPB's 15" screen. [http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-27EA33V-led-monitor]

  • Macbook Pro Thunderbolt and HDMI displays switch on wake up

    Hi there,
Currently using a late 2013 15" Macbook Pro., latest version of Mavericks. I have one display hooked up through Thunderbolt->DVI, with a second set up through HDMI->DVI.
There seems to be an issue where on waking the monitors up from sleep mode (about 10 minutes inactivity time) the displays will turn on, immediately go black (inlcuding the Macbook Pro screen), and then switch such that all windows on one are now on the other.
I can't really repliate this, as it seems to just happen randomly. All I can say in my detective work, is that the HDMI->DVI hooked-up monitor tends to take a little more time to turn on after sleep, whereas the Thunderbolt->DVI monitor comes up immediately.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I've noticed that the HDMI connection seems to lag the Thunderbolt on wake as well. I haven't had the switching issue, though. I use my Thunderbolt display as the primary (menu bar in the preferences) - maybe try doing that if you're using your HDMI out as the primary.
You can always try resetting the SMC and PRAM as well.

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 15" mid-2012 won't boot in clamshell mode with an external display attached

I have a 15" MBPr mid-2012 running OS X 10.10.1. The system won't boot in clamshell mode (power is connected, lid shut) with an external display attached via an Apple Thunderbolt->DVI adapter. it boots fine if the lid is open. It isn't the adapter or the display since my 15" MBPr mid-2014 boots up just fine connected to the same adapter and monitor. And this system used to boot like this just fine some while ago (probably before it was upgraded to Yosemite). I've reset the NVRAM (twice) to no avail.
Has anyone encounter this? Anyone have a solution? Should I try an SMC reset (always a bit nervous about that)? Might it be a driver issue in Yosemite?

  • Two External Displays and Internal Display Over Different Connections

    Hi there.
I'm going to be purchasing a rMBP in the very, very near future. However, I am unclear about how external displays work with this. My current display setup at work is two basic 1080p monitors that can be run over DVI, VGA or HDMI. I'd like to keep using these when I start using the rMBP but also gain the advantage of a third screen by using the internal display at the same time (so much space for activities!).
One of the thunderbolt ports will need to be used for an Ethernet connection (there is no wireless here), so this leaves the setup needing to be one monitor run via Thunderbolt -> DVI and the other monitor run via HDMI.
The internet in general isn't being entirely helpful with this. I'm looking for a clear answer of whether the rMBP will run the internal display and the two external displays using this setup under OS X. Some seem to believe that it won't work using different connection types, for example.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hello dljfield,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you'd like to use multiple external displays with a MacBook Pro with Retina display, then please take a look at the information outlined below. A 15" MacBook Pro mid-2014 can support up to two external displays using different outputs.

  • How do I move Adobe apps to another monitor in Mavericks?

Hi guys, sorry if I'm being obtuse, but since upgrading to Mavericks the one issue I can't seem to figure out is how to completely move my adobe apps across to another monitor.
The problem is now that apps like Illustrator CC, InDesign CC and the like- those with free floating palettes, seem to be stuck on my little 13.3 inch macbook screen unless I move each palette individually to the big screen, but then the menu bar remains on the little MBP screen. If I do anything to the workspace it all then snaps back to the little screen. In ML it seemed to treat the large screen as the primary display automatically and so this was never a problem.
I've let Adobe CC update everything, added mavericks updates, etc but still not having any luck. So far the only option i've found is to mirror the displays, which, honestly, defeats the purpose.
Is there anything I can do? This is a huge workflow issue for me because I do a lot of work on my macbook while connected to a 23" Samsung display via thunderbolt/DVI adapter. I love the size and weight of the smaller macbook but as a primary screen, 13.3 inches just isn't as comfortable to work on as 23 inches

I have this same problem. The other day I solved it using CfMcBlob's first solution, and I was very pleased. However, the problem is happening again with InDesign, but this time I can't try the same solution because "Displays have separate Spaces" is already unchecked.
Just to reiterate, I can drag my workspace window to my second monitor, but all of the tools and top menu stay over on my first monitor. I know that the "actual menu" has to stay on one monitor, but indesign has a top bar with several tools in it that I use all the time, and I'm having to go back and forth. When I first solved this problem, the entire window with the menu bar and tools would open on my other monitor.
Also, I do not want the second solution, because I still use many applications on my original monitor, and I don't want to lose having the "real" top menu here on the left.
    Thanks in advance!
