Thunderbolt faster?

How do i get the promised faster speeds with multiple Lacie Little Big Disks?  I bought 4 of these, daisy chained them together, but having 4 is no faster than having one.  What am i supposed to do?  Is there a way to make a RAID utilizing all 4 drives in Disc Utility?  Why didn't Lacie provide any instructions on how to do this?  The site proclains "You can even daisy chain multiple Little Big Disks together to increase overall transfer rates."   HOW?  Anyone try to do this.  I'm using my MacbookPro laptop SSD, 10.6.8, and all the right thunderbolt cables.

Creating a RAID in Disk Utility is very dependent on specific actions with the mouse.
You need to either:
a) Hold down the shift or Command key and select multiple drives from the list at the left, then click the RAID tab that appears, OR
b) Select the first drive to be included in the set, then click the RAID tab.
Then bring the other drives to be added into that RAID window -- WITHOUT separately selecting them!  The drives to be added must be dragged and dropped in one mouse action (NOT selected, then dragged and dropped) into the the RAID window.

  • Is Thunderbolt fast enough to run all LR5 data from a 7200 rpm external HHD??

    Hi,
I was wondering if Thunderbolt was fast enough to run all LR5 data ( LRCAT, Previews and RAW files ) from a 7200 rpm external HHD or do I need to go with a Thunderbolt 2 setup??  RAW files no greater than 80mb.

These items in Lightroom (creating previews, rending photos to export or send to photoshop) are largely dependent on CPU speed, the disk speed is such a small portion of the total time involved that its probably irrelevant and you'd never notice the difference between fast drives and slow drives. I can't speak about Photoshop, but you know what, none of this addresses the issue of what is "fast" to you and what is not fast to you, and in fact I doubt such a thing can adequately covered in a forum anyway.

  • I need to work on my pix faster, what is faster to work off of - internal SSD or external thunderbolt drive?

I have an issue deciding what I need to do.
I have purchase a LACIE 30TB NAS with Thunderbolt 2.0 ... my internal SSD is 1TB in my new Mac Pro (2014)
I dont know how photoshop works... if I open the file to work on PS located in the LACIE drive would it be as faster as opening it and modify it on my internal SSD ?

To know you would need the benchmark the actual devices.  http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/

  • What is faster thunderbolt or usb 3.0 gigabit ethernet

What is faster a thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter or a usb 3.0 gigabit ethernet adapter?
    Thanks

Both Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 have bandwidths that exceed gigabit ethernet so based on theoretical numbers they should perform the same. However, different product manufacturers will write different drivers and use different hardware so unless you test specific products the question can't really be answered. Probably have to wait until magazines such as MacWorld or other Mac related websites test and compare devices.

  • What would be a faster backup solution, a thunderbolt adapter to a separate external hard drive or a 802.11ac Airport Time Capsule?

What would be a faster backup solution, a thunderbolt adapter to a separate external hard drive or an 802.11ac Airport Time Capsule? Does not need to be easier to backup just faster.

    Thunderbolt by a blazing mile.
Even using gigabit on the TC instead of wireless will not come anywhere near as fast as the thunderbolt.
Let me add though.. hard disk speed might make the difference rather less great. Thunderbolt is so fast the hard disks are left behind.. so the speed is always going to be dependent on speed of drives.. the TC on the other hand is processor bound.. it uses a slow drive since the fact is, a super fast SSD will go no faster.. whereas with thunderbolt and a decent box that can use the power of ssd, it will be as fast as internal SSD on the computer.

  • Faster scanning via Thunderbolt

I am a relative tech novice, and I have a question regarding Tunderbolt.
I have been looking forward to a consumer technology that will permit me to quickly scan my family's tens of thousands of photographs and negatives. Current scanners are relatively slow and not suitable for such large scale projects. I'm not sure if where the bottleneck is (USB port?). I know that there are professional services out there, but a job like this would cost way too much.
Here's my question: is Thunderbolt the technology that I've been waiting for? Will it allow my to scan photographs and negatives at a more reasonable rate? Will scanner companies incorporate Thunderbolt into their scanners? If so, when do you think that would happen?
    Thanks for your help.

In my experience, the bottleneck is not USB. Fujitsu and Panasonic sell a bunch of business class page scanners that are quite speedy, especially compared to scanning a sheet of paper on a flatbed. And despite being USB based, can do 20+ pages per minute (compared to 2 minutes per page on some slower flatbed scanners.) However the speed comes at a price. These scanners start at $500 and go in to the multiple thousands of dollars for the even higher speed scanners (and that may or may not include color!)
What many people want when scanning personal photos/slides/negatives is high quality and resolution. Scanning at a higher resolution will be slower, obviously. But what I find takes a lot of time is "tweaking" the scan. (The "quality" part.) Things like adjusting the alignment of the print on the scanner, cleaning off dust from the slide, and adjusting the color balance for the various brands and models of negatives is where most of my time is spent. While you can use Photoshop to adjust things like color after the fact, cleaning up dust and aligning the print prior to scanning pay off way more than trying to correct that later in post production. These are just some of the reasons why scanning services cost so much. (Imagine the scanned images put into iPhoto, then used as your screensaver or wallpaper, and you have to look at dusty scans everyday....and you paid to have someone do that!)
I never bothered to count the amount of negatives & slides I'm scanning, (I was afraid to know, else I wouldn't start, ) but it is a few hundred negatives and a total of several hundred if you include all the prints and negatives. I'm currently using an older Nikon slide & negative scanner, which has USB2 and Firewire. But for a $400 "pro" scanner, it's still slow despite me using Firewire. At the max resolution of 2400dpi, it takes over a minute per slide. That's one minute for the scan head to move a couple of inches, not Windows "hourglassing" because of USB. So Thunderbolt for this scanner would not help.
Eventually, there may be scanners with Thunderbolt, likely to replace the SCSI based scanners. But that would just be a connectivity option or convenience, rather than to improve performance. (i.e.: "everyone has a Thunderbolt port in 5 years, just like "everyone" has a USB2 port nowdays.) But IMHO, if you want faster scanning, your needs will have to go beyond "consumer" grade scanners.

  • RMBP, Windows 7 64 bit, thunderbolt external drive

I finally figured out how to install and run Win 7 off of my thunderbolt drive (seagate).
the rMBP requires a FAT partition to be created on the interal SSD.  If you use bootcamp utility it creates a huge 20GB partition.  I was able to create a small FAT partition on the internal SSD and then proceed to install and run win 7 off of the external thunderbolt drive.
    PROCEDURE:
    1.  run diskutil command:
    Code:
    diskutil list
you will need to know if your internal SSD is disk0 or disk1 (in this guide it was disk0
    2.  Create the small partition:
***my ssd is a 512 GB drive, you can break down the partition here ***
    Code:
    diskutil resizevolume /dev/disk0s2 494G MS-DOS FAT 5G
    3.  Within Mac, create a single msdos partition on the external thunderbolt drive.  (GUID or MBR)
    4.  for the rMBP, use the Bootcamp assistant utility to create your USB windows 7 installer from an iso and also with the bootcamp drivers.
    5.  Reboot and press the option key at the chime.
    6.  Choose the windows installer
    7.  at the drive screen of the installer you will see your 2 drives. drive0 maybe the external.  Format the external drive ntfs and then install to the drive.
    8.  On reboot and eventually install bootcamp drivers.
    Trial and error:
I tried install without internal partition and received 0x8030024 error which in some of apple forums can be overcome by removing the main drive.  I did this but installer would freeze.
Good luck.  If you need any help let me know.

I have a related question. I have a 2012 top-of-the-line iMac with Thunderbolt, and I already have the internal SSD partitioned into both Mac and Bootcamp running Windows 7 64 bit. The internal hard drive is also partitioned into both mac and PC hard drives  I just added a 4 TB external Thunderbolt drive (Seagate Backup Plus using the external Seagate Thunderbolt adapter/dock), and I do NOT want to install Windows bootcamp on the external drive - I just want to partition it so that the Mac has access to 2 TB and Bootcamp has access to the other 2 TB. Using Mac Disk Utility, I can easily partition it, although I can't format the PC side into NTSF. However, when I startup using Windows, it doesn't seem to recognize either of the external hard drive partitions that the Mac side already recognizes. The Mac side even assigned little icons (automatically) to both partitions showing the Seagate harddrive docked in its little Thunderbolt adapter/dock. The PC side didn't assign icons, and didn't recognize either partition UNTIL I WENT INTO PC DISK MANAGEMENT AND FORMATTED THE PC PARTITION AGAIN, as NTSB.  Now the PC side recognizes the Windows Partitions, but still doesn't recognize the Mac partition - it says that partition hasn't been formatted yet. Oddly, the Mac side still recognizes both partitions even after I changed the PC version. So what's going on here? Does Windows require some sort of Thunderbolt driver in order to correctly recognize an external hard drive that Mac Disk Utility has formatted? I didn't have this problem on the internal hard drive that come in my iMac - it's recognized easily by both PC and Mac.
I am using only the Windows NTSF partition on the external hard drive at the moment. I transferred all my Steam games to it as an experiment (about 350 GB). The games are running just fine, but it seems that the frame rates and speeds are slower than they were on the original internal hard drive. I bought the external Thunderbolt drive because it was supposed to be faster.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
Any help on this matter would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Anyone else having trouble connecting MBP with thunderbolt port (TBp) and 27"iMac with mini display port (MDp)

I have a 27" Imac.i7 with mini displayport and MBP13 i5 with thunderbolt port. Some time ago I tried to connect my old MBP with miniDP  to The 27"iMac I Failed so did the apple centre they refunded cable costs and said I'd be contacted by Cupertino. That was 9 months ago, now replaced MBP with 13 inch(**** I can use my iMac as display!). Does not work phoned Fast Lane very helpful guy called JIM emailed me some software/firmware update links.  Still no display linking. One of the links was for a couple of updates for a TBp equiped 27" iMac mine is only MDp equiped. Failing to find any MDp updates in apple support.  Anyone have any Ideas!  My lad has a later 27"i5 he uses Xbox 360 no problem on his but it wont look at my MBP.
Beginning to feel like some of the kit that went with a fully loaded 5500 worked eventually. Computer and FM radio, Photography kit fine, video capture audio capture forget it.  Too many crashes and resets made it impractical.

  • Thunderbolt Daisy Chain to a DisplayPort Monitor (Dell 2713HM)?

I have a Mac mini (2011) that supports my Dell monitor (2713HM 27'') at its maximum reslution of 2560x1440 only through a Thunderbolt to Mini-Displayport cable. As this Mac has only Thunderbolt as a fast connection for backup drives I have to add a Thunderbolt chain with the backup device in the middle and the Dell monitor at the end of the chain if I want bakcups faster than Firewire 800 or USB 2.0 (the other possible connections with this Mac). My first attempt with such a setup was the LaCie eSATA Hub. But this does not feed the display signals through, the monitor stays black. Checked in the store with a genuin Thunderbolt monitor from Apple the daisy chain worked.
Can my chain work at all? Is only the Lacie the wrong drive hub? Would it work with a Seagate Desktop Hub, for instance STAE122 or STAE 127?
Can I trick the Mac under Bootcamp as OS to use HDMI for the monitor? Dell officially says that the monitor can only accept 1900x1080 over HDMI, but some have fiddled wth different computers with custom settings that worked with some Monitors but mostly under Linux and to Dell 2711.

FWIW, STAE129 is the current version TB adapter
that is self powered and has TB daisy chain port.
STAE122 and STAE127 are older versions and
not the current model, though there may be stock of
these around.  As to whether this will solve your issue,
    I don't know.

The MacMini HDMI port is hardware limited to 1980x1200.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:

Screen sharing setup in 10.5, 10.6 are described by the links by operating system.  10.7 is fairly similar to 10.6.
And if both Macs have Firewire, you can setup a Firewire over IP network for fast communication between machines.  Note if you have two different Firewire ports a 6 pin to 9 pin Firewire cable does exist.  There are no Firewire to USB cables.

  • I hate this Thunderbolt and I can't take it anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a POWER phone user (but I don't root or jailbreak). If I want to watch a Youtube vid, it had better come up. If I want to sream a radio station, it had better buffer and play, when I want to check something out on a website, it had better come up for me. Otherwise, why not just buy a basic phone? I can do all this other stuff from home. But I don't have TIME at home. I only have time when I'm out and about. So...if my phone doesn't live up to the hype, It just makes me all the more angry.
This Thunderbolt reboots all the time AND loses it's data connection, even after the update. I'm hoping Gingerbread OTA comes out today as planned.
But I have a theory as to why this is happening.
I think It has something to do with the networks and Andriod and isn't specific to VZW or the Tbolt. My buddy now lives in a 4G market and never has any issues. He's with Sprint and has their Droid X equivilant. His phone will rarely and only reboot when he's in this area (Kokomo, IN) and he just got Gingerbread and says it really improved battery life.
I drive 30miles one way to work. There are many routes I can take, but they are all rural. Kokomo is a hodge podge of crap networks. We're 3G, EV, 1x, etc. So nothing lasts long when driving as you'll drift in and out of the various networks all the time. And my phone will almost always reboot when I'm driving, and with no rhyme or reason, consistancy, etc. If it doesn't reboot (which I'm convinced isn't a heat issue either), it will at least lose it's data connectivity. Sometimes It comes back on, but most of the time I have to pull the battery. In the Driod forum, many others have said the same thing, and that a refurb replacement didn't help. So, I don't think it's the phone, but rather how Android handles networks.
I haven't checked... but do other Android phones reboot and lose data like mad? I was surprised when my non-VZW buddy told me his Droid X w/ Sprint rebooted yesterday. For a period of time after the last update, my data connection was fine, but rebooting startedh happening all the time. I don't think my phone rebooted once prior to the last update. My iPhone friends never talk about any of these issues... or any issues to be honest.
Which brings me to this... I was so excited to get this phone. It was my first Droid phone and I chose it over the iPhone only because I had plans on getting an iPad 2. I already have an iPod Touch. So I am stacked full of app's. If I'm in a 4G area, (which is hardly ever), the phone seem to peform fine. I came from a Blackberry Tour 9630, which I thought was the worst phone ever. But this one is JUST as bad, and one of the worst decisions I've made in a long time. I love many things about Andriod and this phone, but I spend more time in forums looking for solutions, (while holding back the desire to smash the phone to bits), than I do using it. I basically dream even using the phone anymore because it will always infuriate me at some point. One more ill-timed reboot is going to make me snap (It's not like my Blackberry, but not exaclty a fast booter either!).
And what stinks is that I'm stuck with it until the end of 2012! Plus, I've invested in an extended life battey and a skin. It's annoying how few aftermarket products are avail for this phone to be honest. Battery life is dreadful, so an extened battery is a must. God forbid Otterbox release a case that fits an ext life battery too. It's not going to happen. So, I'm stuck wiith skins, which is fine.
Also, the charge jack is located in the DUMBEST spot ever. Do you think I'll ever see a good cradle that allows me to watch movies or whatever in landscape mose while charging? I bet not. Yes, I know they make some, but none are any good. I quite simpley I hate this phone and regret buying it. I've been with Verizon for a LOOOONG time too.
I went to the local store, and they are all really cool and nice, but acted like I was supposed to live w/ the reboots and loss of data. Someone there always grabs the phone and checks it out, making sure the settings are correct, and hands it back. I want a phone that works!!! God forbid they let me get a different phone. I'll even pay my insurance ded of $99 to get out of this phone.
If I call tech support, they are going to want to do my SECOND hard reset, which is a pain to get up and running again. My gmail addy book is dialed in, so I'm good there. But a hard reset won't work, because it doesn't work for anyone else. A refurb phone will do the same thing, and so will a new. Besides, I bet half of those refurbed phones are from rebooting problems anyway! If I march down to the VZW store, they'll tell me to wait till the OTA update hits to see if that works, which it might. But I've read that people who have rooted their phones and got the update say it's better, but still has some issues and quirks. I've been trying all day to get the update, but I bet that they haven't even released it. I need to check. Last time I got an OTA update, I had to get it in the middle of the night.
My point is.... i'm in cell h--- in this area. We are a 3G city, but if you go any direction out of the city, you start getting into to Centennial Wireless territory, and they are a giant thorn in the side to all major cell companies. They won't let go of a particular area and because of it, Kokomo will likely have ghetto 4G. At least for me, because I'll be far away from the tower. Plus, I live on the south edge of town. So, as I travel south to Indy, I'll have weak 4G, and then get into North Indy's weak 4G until I get closer to the city. Then it's FAST!! Good 4G service is unreal. I'm just regurgitating what a VZW rep told me. I'm just repeating it all back with some "hatred" mixed in.
So, I don't know what to do. Call Tech Support? Beg for a refurb that likely won't work? I could file an insurance claim since I have a legit reason. Sweat got under the display and won't go away. It's not bad, but it's not perfect. The people at the VZW store told me that I really need to get a Bluetooth headset, esp if I sweat a lot. I also put the phone in the crook of my neck a lot and talk while working. This almost always hangs up the call. Very irritating!!
They also told me at the store that if I go thru Insurance and pay my $99 ded, I MAY have a chance to talk them into letting me get a different phone of equal or more value but i'll have to really sell the idea. And if so, I'm going iPhone 4. Period. I don't think it's necc better than my Tbolt, but it's reliable, I have tons of app's for it already, and I'm a Mac user anyway. It just makes sense. Otherwise, there is NO CHANCE i'll be able to talk VZW into getting me out of this phone, even though none of these issues were present while I had the return policy. Only after did it start to do all of these weird things.
It sounds like I'm complaining about the Tbolt just to get the iPhone and I'm not. I'm upset because using my phone is a horrible experience as it's either slow, has a horrible connection most of the time when I'm driving, and is only useful on Wifi. Maybe a different phone will be no better and I'm just cursed to live in a bad market? VZW was supposed to the be the best though, so switching probl won't help me.
Not sure what to do exactly... so I will probl wait to see if anyone has any suggestions. I hate to be so negative, but I'm likely SOL, and that's really sad. VZW has been very good to me over the years, but i don't see how this will end well for me.

You know something ironic? I tried to respond to this using my Thunderbolt and the stock browser, and I couldn't type anything in this box! HA!! I'm doing this from the web.
Anyway, doing the *#*#4636#*#* thing did the trick. I'm now running CDMA (PRL), and only have had one reboot in two days. Usually I would have like 10. This totally confirms that it's something with the brains of the Tbolt that can't handle hand-off's on non-4G networks. In fact, in the past my phone would be in 3G mode, then when a 1x handoff needed to happen, my phone would either not hand off to 1x at all, or it would simply LOSE it's data connection. I watched my signal on my trip home yesterday, and it would easily switch in and out of 3G and 1X. As I said, I'm in "cell hell" here, so I bet I change from 1x to 3G at least 4 times in a 30 mile radius either direction.
So, for VZW store employees to tell people we'll be 4G before the end of year, is just a ploy to cell the new phones. Even if Kokomo goes 4G, it's only good if you never leave town! If half the state is still 1X, then what hope is there that most places will be 4G?
I don't understand, outside of sheer cost, what the problem is making 1x Towers 3G or 4G capable? Are these towers privately owned? Is it up to the owner to fork over the money? Why would they do that for the convenience of minority 4G users if 1X and 3G works "Ok"? It should be manditory. And there are towers ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, so I can only imagine the expense involved. But still, these companies have a responsibility to stay current. Otherwise, someone else will come along with a totally dialed in network and they'll lose business. I'm starting to think VZW is getting so big so fast that they can't keep up.
verizon has the largest network. they have the fastest network. what more can they do? yes, they focus on major markets, but that's because that is where they make money. they aren't a public utility. they are a for profit corporation. their coverage speaks for itself. they pay WAY more attention to the rural areas than any other carrier.....but it's just bad business to throw ten towers in a spread out rural area that will cover a few thousand people....when they can use 9 of those towers in an area that will cover 200,000 people. their LTE network is 10 times faster than sprint's "4g" and they are banking on domintaing the market with it, just like they did with 3g. keep in mind that they launched the first LTE areas only 6 months ago and this is still very new technology.
for the record though, i mostly keep mine in 3g right now, as it is much better on my battery. i switch it to 4g if i'm not near wifi and want to browse or download something. i'm in a strong LTE network and i do believe this LTE network will blow the other carriers out of the water. my 3g incredible speed tests at the same rate as my friends' EVO's on sprint's "4g" netowrk. (just under 2 mbps). no reboots, but i didn't install they update back in may.

  • Yosemite on 13" MBP(Mid 2012) running super slow on standard configuration. Is there a rock solid way that I can make it fast? or Yosemite is designed to work only on PCIe SSDs with 16GB RAM? Missing Steve Jobs :(

My 13" MBP MD 101 / A1278 / 9,2 / Mid 2012 is still in production and it is performing like a windows pc; super slow after updating it to Yosemite.I can't afford to upgrade its HDD to SSD and 4GB RAM to 16GB.
Tried everything found on internet, nothing got successful in making it fast as it was once with mountain lion. I hope I could have Yosemite's features and leopard's responsiveness and stability.
I think Apple guys have designed Yosemite only for SSDs only. They should design OS X according to every mac's different hardware, like if I have a spinning old hard drive it should mould itself to the capabilities of it and not demand responsiveness of an SSD.
Please do let me know if anyone have brilliant new idea other than found on the internet.

  • Have thunderbolt and need to sync ical with google calendar in order to use.  Any suggestions?

Have a thunderbolt and MacBook.  Need to sync ical with google calendar as thunderbolt supports google calendar.  Any suggestions?

I think we may be talking about two different things. Thunderbolt is the new two way display port on Mac Book Pros and Apple displays.
Thunderbolt (originally codenamed Light Peak) is an interface for connecting peripheral devices to a computer via an expansion bus. Thunderbolt was developed by Intel and brought to market with technical collaboration from Apple Inc. It was introduced commercially on Apple's updated MacBook Pro lineup on February 24, 2011.
Thunderbolt combines PCI Express and DisplayPort into a serial data interface. A single Thunderbolt port supports hubs as well as a daisy chain of up to seven Thunderbolt devices; up to two of these devices may be high-resolution displays using DisplayPort. You can move data to and from peripherals up to 20 times faster than with USB 2.0 and up to 12 times faster than with FireWire 800.
