Thunderbolt firmware update failed!

My config: Early 2011 MB Pro 13" 2.7 GHz i7 / OSX 10.7.1 Build 11B26
Last week I installed "Thunderbold Firmware Update version 1.0" on my brand new MB Pro.
It was connected to power, the update started, rebooted and showed the progress dialog while installing. So far so good. Almost at 100%, the progressbar stoped moving for at least an hour!!
At that point i discovered that a mobile HD was still connected to my MB (stupid off course during FW updates) and I disconnected it in the hope it would solve the pause. I waited again for at least half an hour and finally decided (was forced, against all advise) to reboot my MB.
The next boot, was a scary one :-). While everything seemed to work at first glace, I discoverd that my external displays did not work anymore. When using my minidisplay->VGA converter, no displays are detected. When using my minidisplay->HDMI displays are detected but giving "no signal". I've tried at three diverent screens that are all working on my (older) mac mini using the same adapters + cables.
Anybody experienced the same problem so far? I called with Apple Care but they "only" could advise me the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM resets. None of them helped. I also tried to install the thunderbolt fw-update by hand but a "Your computer's thunderbold port does not need this update" message is shown. The software updater shows that the system is fully up to date.
When looking at my system report the following is shown for my thunderbolt:
====
MacBook Pro:
  Vendor Name:    Apple, Inc.
  Device Name:    MacBook Pro
  UID:    0x0001000A1B402220
  Firmware Version:    22.1
  Port:
  Status:    No devices connected
  Link Status:    7
  Port Micro Firmware Version:    FFFF.FF.FF
====
The FFFF.FF.FF worries me a bit. Anyone knows what is shown after a successful update? Any known tricks maybe to force the FW-update again or skip back to the previous version?
I desperately need my external big screen again for software-dev.
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards, David (Netherlands)

When i booted my mb (with new mobo) and scanned for updates, several popped up, under which "Thunderbold firmware update 1". Im scarred as **** to run the update again.... since i don't realy need it, i decided to skip it for the time beeing ;-)
I did it on my 2011 MBPro on Aug. 24.
It normally causes no problems to run a FW update if you check first, that there are NO external devices connected during FW update and the charger is connected and powered.
If it fails under this circumstances, it's mostly a hardware fault causing that. For that do it while your system is still under warranty.
Anyway, you can also try to roll back a failed firmware update.
See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213
Sooner or later you must have it as a precondition for a upgrade or to get different hardware to work.
Note also that the next Thunderbolt FW update is rolled out now.

  • Thunderbolt firmware update 1.2 continues to fail on MBP

For months I have been repeatedly asked via software update to run the Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2. The update gray screen shows up, but before the status bar can complete, the computer restarts. Other users have gotten relief with unplugging their usb and thunderbolt devices but I have no such devices attached to my computer. Anyone else?

    Hello there terrie_808,
If the update still seems to not be taking for your Thunderbolt Display, I would like to recommend the troubleshooting in the following article to help you get that resolved, named:
Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2: Keeps reappearing and Thunderbolt ports and Target Display Mode may not work
After installing Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2:
    Thunderbolt ports may not work.
Target Display Mode may no longer work.
The update may keep reappearing as available for download.
This occurs when a self-powered Thunderbolt device (other than a directly-connected Thunderbolt display) is connected to a Thunderbolt port while installing the update.
    To resolve this issue:
    Shutdown your computer.
    Disconnect all Thunderbolt devices.
    Wait 10 seconds.
If you are using a Mac mini with a Thunderbolt display, reconnect the Thunderbolt display directly to your computer via the Thunderbolt port. Do not connect other Thunderbolt devices at this time.
    Restart your computer.
If the Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2 is offered, download and install it and restart your computer when asked. If the Thunderbolt Update is not offered, the update has installed correctly.
    Reconnect all Thunderbolt devices.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • 27 inch thunderbolt display blacks out after Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2

Bought 2 new 27 inch TB displays for two different machines and after a couple of days the Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2 appears on my Mac Pro with one of the displays installed. So I install the firmware update.  Now my display blacks out periodically and I keep getting Graphic Display Errors with a request to sent the errors to Apple. Running a 32 GB Mac Pro (late 2013 circular style) I have three monitors connected (two 20 inch cinema displays and the new 27 inch display). This machine is supposed to be able to handle three 4k monitors or 6 standard TB displays.  I've seen the posts about the blacking out with this monitor but I didn't have any problems before the firmware update and now I've got them pretty regularly.  I had the blacking out problem on an earlier monitor and took one of the monitors back and Apple gave me another one and this is the replacement.  Same problem, but this one only started after the update. I'm hoping someone from Apple reads these messages and can let me know what's up.
BTW, I also have an older 27 inch Apple monitor that ran perfectly on this machine so I'm disappointed that I spent all this money and now get the blacking out issue.

I have my Thunderbolt display connected to my MacBook Pro and have been experiencing the same issue, getting worse over time.  The folks at my local Apple store did not know what to do about it.  So, I looked around and tried different thing.
The one thing that seems to be working is to System Preferences > Build-in Display > uncheck “Automatically adjust brightness.”
    I hope this helps.

  • Computer keeps shutting down when trying to update Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2! But says I have installed it 4 times already.

    Hello All,
Today I updated my MacBook Pro Early 2011 from Lion to Mavericks. I then went onto my App Store and it says I have an update that I need to install. This update is the Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2. Everytime I press update, it says that it is downloading, but suddenly my computer just turns off with no warning when the download hasnt even started. I'm worried that this will damage my computer! What I don't understand is that App Store says that I have already installed this update 4 times. But if so, why is it still saying that I need to update it?
Any help will be most appreciated!
    Celine

Unfortunately after that I have no other suggestions... if it was my computer I would reformat the entire computer but you need a good backup to do that something is obviously corrupt and not acting right otherwise if you have another computer that you can use to update..

  • Stuck on Thunderbolt Firmware-Update 1.2

App Store is permanently showing that there is a new update.
    Thunderbolt Firmware-Update 1.2
When i click on update, it asks to restart the computer, i confirm.
After that it says installing software update 2 mins, then it restarts the computer.
After restart it shows a light grey screen, apple logo in the middle and a filling status bar on bottom.
When the statusbar is full, the MacOS is loaded and all work.
After a while the AppStore shows a new indicator and tells me there are new updates ..
Checking which ones shows it's the **** Thunderbolt again.
Its a brand new Mac, so whats the right way to get this fixed without losing a lot of time, money, the data on disk or the waranty?
Would have written a mail to support, but only found an option to call them during hours I'm at work.

The grey screen with statusbar shows for around 10-15 mins each time.

The old interface wasn't perfect but logical - as you say the icons are for the iPhone and iPad crowd, and as i see it will entail more scrolling and button hopping on the remote.

    Quelle surprise......
It's a bit like the redesign of these discussion fora - the new layouts are designed for the younger generation but far too much scrolling and hard work to find what you want compared to the old format.

  • Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2 / Thunderbolt: No hardware was found.

We purchased a 2012 27" iMac at work which I connected to a 23" cinema display via a MDP->DVI adapter. It worked for a while, but then stopped working 1 day. Thinking it was the monitor or the adapter, I connected a 27" cinema display with a direct MDP connection - still didn't work.
After doing the typical SMC/PRAM reset, I noticed that in System Information under thunderbolt it said "Thunderbolt:          No hardware was found." I also noticed that the App Store listed a Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2. So, I updated that, restarted, it flashed the progress bar for a second but didn't move before restarting again and booting. The firmware update was still listed in the app store.  I tried downloading the DMG for the update on the Apple Download site, install seemed to go well, but did not install.
Then I found this: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4579. I ran through that process (also reset SMC/PRAM again). Still no go. After calling Apple support, they recommended that I reinstall OS X. Still didn't work after that. I called back today, and apparently my only option is to carry it to the closest Apple Store, which is an hour and a half away (we have a closer authorized dealer, but they are closed until July 8th for some reason). I also asked if they could send a box so I could ship it and they said that wasn't an option.
Is there anything else I can do without having to wait until July 8? I am extremely disappointed with Apple right now, and I'm hoping I can get this resolved without having to run all over the place.

It sounds to me that you've gone through all the possibilities as regards software and that your iMac has a hardware issue. If so, then taking it to an Apple Store or authorized Apple service provider is going to be necessary.  Apple typically does not provide ship-in service when they have authorized service in your area. You'll either have to wait for the service center to re-open on the 8th or drive to the Apple Store.
    Regards.

  • Thunderbolt firmware update 1.2 won't install

I can't find a way to get Thunderbolt firmware update 1.2 installed. I need this update because my external display won't work without it. Machine is late 2011 13" Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9.5. Other updates install without problems, only this update is keeping coming back. Installation seems to go fine, however it doesn't actually install it and update re-appears to App store.
    Stuff I've tried already
Install update on AC & fully charged battery
Download & install update manually from Apple website
Install update with & without thunderbolt connected
...with these combinations, App store update log shows 8 installs for that update (and it's still not actually installed)
Anyone had similar problems? Any ideas how to get it installed?

Restart the computer in safe mode. Certain caches maintained by the system will be rebuilt.
Safe mode is much slower to start up than normal. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
When the login screen appears, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

  • Zen Micro - firmware update failed so now "dead"

I have a firmware problem with my Zen Micro. Can anyone help?
The series of actions I have taken so far are these:
I got my Micro in January 2006. I now want to run Audible software to listen to their books so I downloaded the firmware update L6_2_2_02.exe from the Creative support site which is stated as providing the Audible?facility.
I backed up the Micro contents using Creative MeadiaSource Organiser. I then ran the firmware update from my Win XP PC. This started OK and I got a series of messages about what was happening. Then it stopped with the progress indicator bars about 2/3 across. I left it for half an hour and nothing changed so clicked to stop the update.
I checked the firmware version on the Micro and it said 2.2.02. The update?looked OK and the FM worked but of course I had no music content.
I opened my Creative MeadiaSource Organiser (v 3.0.09) but it said no device is connected so I was unable to reload the music. My XP PC recognised the Micro as connected and I checked Device Manager which showed the "device is working properly". I was also able to synch music to the Micro using Windows Media Player and this played OK. I tried another computer and could also synch using Windows Media Player but I wanted to reload my music from the backup.
I looked on the Creative site for the steps to take when a firmware update fails. The Zen Micro is not on the list as supporting the MP3 Player Recovery Tool so I did not use that. I followed the Reload Failure recovery instructions and ran Clean UP, then Format All, but this did not fix it so I ran Reload Firmware on the Micro. This was a big mistake!
Now when I try to run the firmware update from my Win XP PC, I select English then I get the message "Your player is not connected, please connect your player". I checked again and XP still recognises the Micro and the device is working. It is no longer recognised by Windows Media Player but just? appears to XP as an empty storage device.
The Micro now shows the firmware as v 0.0.65, but now it is stuck in Recovery Mode. I have contacted Creative Support but their reply is that this player is now over 3 years old, reached its end of service life, so there is no support other than on their web site. Following their web site recovery instructions got me into this mess so I guess?no extra help is offered from Creative.
The player is now essentially dead. Unless there is some way to get the firmware update program to recognise the device as connected, then I don't know how to fix this. This is a shame as it is a nice little player for my music collection.
Can anyone help as I don't know what to do next?

  • Firmware update failed - how to resolve remotely

I bought my father an Apple TV so he could subscribe and watch MLB. Everything was working fine until the Apple TV attempted to update itself. Apparently the firmware update failed.  I need to know how to remotely resolve this for him. I can access his PC remotely so I read some info that you can update Apple TV via iTunes. I also need to confirm that the USB socket on the Apple TV is a USB Mini type. I'm assuming you can just plug the Apple TV into a USB socket and then from iTunes initiate the firmware update, much like you do an iPad. He's not very technically savvy, so I need to do this for him or have him call Apple support.
Any suggestions or help is appreciated.

If he hasn't done so get him to do the old fashioned trick of unplugging teh mains power to it and restarting.
If it restarts correctly the update can be reattempted.
If it's truly bricked then return to Apple or restore using itunes will be necessary.
