Thunderbolt hard drives any good

hi just been looking on the apple site and notice they have the new thunder bolt 6t hard drives
wanted too find out if they are any good  ?  i will not be using for any sort of pro use just back ups usuall but i like the fact its super fast compare too usb 2.0 is it really that fast ? how long will take to say transfer a 10gig video file ?

I suggest you google "thunderbolt hard drives" and research them.  Don't just look at what apple sells in there online store.  Look at reviews.

  • Connectiong an external thunderbolt hard drive to an older iMac via firewire to thunderbolt adapter, as my Mac doesn't have any thunderbolt entry?

Is there a possibility to connect an external thunderbolt hard drive to my iMac (originally Leopard 10.5.8. upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3) via firewire to thunderbolt adapter, as my Mac doesn't have any thunderbolt, but has two firewire entries?
Would like to use the hard drive's big data stocking capacity of 8TB, but actual WD-HDDs of such a capacity have no more other entries than thunderbolt.

Basically, no.  The Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter does not work "in reverse,"  meaning, you have to have a Thunderbolt port on your Mac in order to use it.
Most Thunderbolt drives that I have seen also have a USB 3 port.  You could use that, but on on an older Mac that does not have a USB 3 port you will be limited to USB 2 speeds.

  • Thunderbolt audio distortion during heavy Thunderbolt hard drive activity on MacBook Pro Retina 15 2012

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro Retina connected to a Thunderbolt Display, with Thunderbolt hard drives attached to that. Whenever I'm doing a big copy, or a Time Machine backup, any audio being played through the speakers becomes heavily distorted. If I switch to internal speakers, it's fine (but obviously not high-quality). As soon as drive activity quiets down, audio is fine again.
Anyone else having this problem and/or know of a fix? It's super aggravating to have to change speaker settings every hour when my backup kicks off!
    Thanks!

I believe this issue is caused by bad ground coupling between the two devices, some of the induced charge can spark between connectors in the thunderbolt port causing computer to basicly freeze.
To solve this issue try touching the connectors outside metal part to your macbooks body first to discharge it, then while plugging int the connector do it at slight angle so the metal of the connector touches Mac's body.
This method has been working for me.

  • Itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?

ive recently updated, itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?if i transfer the movies from the external to the laptop they will add to the library without any problem so theres no issue with the laptop but when i go to add file in itunes i can path to the external but as soon as i select the file nothing happens, just goes back to itunes

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • Time machine can not select my internal hard drive any more.

    Hi all
Time machine can not select my internal hard drive any more. I only can back up external disks. Does anyone know how to fix this?
    All answers are much appreciated

I don't know the answer but I have the same thing happen. I have two external drives I use for backup. Sometimes it can see one and sometimes another. Then sometimes it can't see either one.  I will take one out for a while then plug it back in and then it may see it.  Maybe it's a cable issue or something but I will be curious to hear what someone more knowledgeable says.

Want to add a 2TB internal hard drive, any suggestions?

Hi bgardnerG5, and a warm welcome to the forums!
WD Caviar Black 2 TB Internal hard drive...

A WD Caviar Bue would do also, but only has a 3 year warranty, the Black has a 5 year warranty.
The "Green" drives aren't really suited for a Boot drive.

  • Can You Now Install Windows 7 64-bit On an External Thunderbolt Hard Drive?

Hi. Will Windows 7 see external Thunderbolt hard drives as internal and install it finally to an external hard drive (for Boot Camp)? Has anyone tried it yet? Thank you in advance.
    Gbu.

    Yep, it works great.
I bought the Thunderbolt adapter for my Seagate GoFlex. Use the Windows 7 install USB stick that Boot Camp makes. Each time Windows installer reboots, you need to hold the option key to reboot back to the new installation. If you miss it and the computer boots back to OS X, no problem, just reboot with option. Once Windows is finished, run Windows Support from your USB stick.
When you try to select Boot Camp in the startup disk control pannel, there is only one 'Boot Camp' even if you have a Windows installation on your internal drive. When you boot into 'Boot Camp' there is a high quality beatiful black and white ASCII boot manager screen that Microsoft made. You'll see 'Windows 7' and 'Windows 7' to choose from. There is a freeware boot manager editor you can use to uniquely name your various Windows boots, or you can use Microsoft's cryptic text based editor. Windows doesn't do Thunderbolt plug and play, so if you're on an internal Windows and plug in the drive, it won't appear or even start up. Reboot and it'll be available in the boot manager.
I plugged the drive in through the Thunderbolt display, and everything worked fine. I was sure I would have activation trouble with all the peripherals in the TB display, but there was none. In the Windows Device Manager, every last thing has a properly working driver. I've never seen a PC with every device working.
It all works because Thunderbolt really is a PCI express slot, just like in a desktop machine. In the GoFlex enclosure, there's an ATA controller just like on an adapter card. Windows hasn't a clue that it's external.

  • Cannot uninstall cs6 bad hard drive, any suggestions?

Cannot uninstall cs6 bad hard drive, any suggestions?
    THank you

Thank you for the Adobe contact. They connected me to the chat link and the Adobe tech Support rep sent me a License Recovery download link (attached) http://download.macromedia.com/pub/support/tools/LicenseRecovery111.dmg.
I have 10.10.1 Yosemite. When I open the download folder and click on the LicenseRecovery.app it shows up on the dock but it nothing happens. I cannot quit the app only Force Quit. I have restarted the mac and that did't help.
Adobe chat suggested I uninstall CS5.5/6 and re-install but why would that have anything to do with the app opening?
Any suggestion is greatly appreciated, again.
    Thank you

  • Use my G Raid Thunderbolt Hard Drive in Bootcamp

I have a 4 TB G Raid with Thunderbolt hard drive that I would like to access from my bootcamped Windows 7 half of my Mac. Some googling showed that it needs to be plugged in at startup for thunderbolt to work and that it should install the neccessary drivers. It hasn't installed the drivers and I'm fairly certain that everything is plugged in as it should be as the extra monitor that is daisy-chained through the hard drive does work. Does anyone know where I can find the drivers or where in the device manager I would find the hard drive?

Have you tried it without the extra Monitor connected?

  • MSI DR16-B DVD-RW Drive, any good?

Is this drive any good? I like MSI technology, i have an MSI motherboard, an MSI graphics card and an MSI CD-RW drive, i want to purchase two of these MSI DR16-B DVD-RW drives for a new system i'm building.

    Hi Commander Sinclair
Babylon 5 is the greatest sci-fi show ever! "Sooner or later, everyone comes to Babylon 5."
Have a look to this site for more detailed info and hints about a DVD writer (http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2260). As they say, "setting a booktype (bitsetting) is just the process of telling your burner to convert a DVD+R disc "virtually" into a DVD-ROM instead. This feature is important for some people who have older set-top DVD players that cannot recognize the "bit" that determines what type of DVD media is sitting in the drive". Many just don't care, but if movies are your first goal, well, maybe you'll find it an interesting option.
And yes, you're right: much better not to mess with firmwares. Anyway, don't worry too much: I can burn and play my favourite movies even with my not-so-up-to-date DRA-8.
    Stay tuned.

Ah, a Babylon 5 fan, excellent, thanks for the post, i'm not interested in flashing the firmware and i don't know what this booktype thing is, all i want to do is burn DVD's but i guess with all the advancements in technology, it won't be as simple as that.
    Thanks Ambassador G'Kar (i know it's not the name you're using) :D

  • Can the Gigabit Ethernet LAN Port be used with a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adaptor and then to a Thunderbolt Hard Drive as a back up drive?

Can the Gigabit Ethernet LAN Port be used with a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adaptor and then to a Thunderbolt Hard Drive as a back up drive?

If you use ethernet to connect the two AirPort Extremes together, you'll have Gigabit speeds available at all of the ethernet ports on both routers.
If you connect the second AirPort Extreme using wireless only and configure the Extreme to "extend a wireless network", then the maximum speeds that the second router can attain will be limited to the capability of the wireless connection. So, if you connect at normal "n" wireless speeds of say 130 Mbps, that will be the maximum speed available at the ethernet ports on the second AirPort Extreme.
I think you can easily see the difference between Gigabit ethernet, which is 1000 Mbps compared to "n" wireless at 130 Mbps. Even if you can manage to connect at 5 GHz speeds for wireless, the max speed will be in the 300 Mbps range, more than 3 times slower than Gigabit ethernet. Normal "n" speeds will be about 7 times slower than ethernet.
For streaming high definition video and other demanding sources, you'll need as much bandwidth (speed) as you can get. Ethernet is always the best choice if you can possibly use it. And...there's no wireless interference on an ethernet connection.

  • R4 & R6 Thunderbolt Hard Drive Speeds

Anyone using the Thunderbolt Hard Drives from Pegasus and what kind of speeds are you getting?  Anyone using Raid 10 with the Thunderbolt Drives?  I want to get one but I plan to do either RAID 1 or RAID 10 and all I can find is speeds for RAID 5....and I don't want to use it with RAID 5. lol

    Paul,
I haven't got a R4 to try it out yet. I wonder if it's possible to run a Thunderbolt cable between 2 iMac's then access the R4 Thunderbolt Drive from the other iMac via the Thunderbolt cable hooked into the other Mac?  This way you are still transferring data at a high rate because all the connections are via a Thunderbolt Cable...?
I am trying to save for the R6 because I want the faster speed over the R4.  I do have a ton of questions about the drives though.  Can I install OSX on the Thunderbolt Drive and use the internal HD as a scratch disk for Photoshop?  Can I use the R4 as a scratch disk and how will that improve performance for Photoshop and FCPX?  I also wonder with the R6 1TBx6.  Can I Raid 0(2TB) then Raid 1(2TBx2)

selling my old mac book pro. I need to delete everything on the hard drive. any ideas ?I do not have the boot disks.

If the Mac came w/system DVDs, you will need to obtain them prior to selling.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.
