Thunderbolt - HDMI - DVI?

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro, and got an HDMI adapter for the DisplayPort. (My Monitor is DVI-D and my TV only has HDMI so I wanted something that would work for both.)
When I plug the MBP into the TV via HDMI it works fine, but when I try to plug it into the monitor, the MBP recognizes a display but nothing shows on it. (In the Displays prefpane it lets me re-arrange them and stuff.)
Using an HDMI to DVI cable from my old Toshiba laptop's HDMI port worked fine.
Using System Profiler, the monitor shows up as well..

As you state, they use the same signals. I bought a Display port adaptor to DVi and it is the same. I shall have the unit checked out.

MacMini (2011) problem with Thunderbolt display if 2nd monitor is connected via HDMI/DVI adapter

iam running a MacMini (2011) 2.3GHz i5 with Mac OS X 10.7.4 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 256 GB Samsung SSD.
If i connect a Thunderbolt display only - all is fine.
But if i connect a 2nd monitor ( Samsung S23A700) via HDMI / DVI adapter (original Apple) the major screen (Thunderbolt Display) sometimes
is going black and immidiately back to normal. It looks like that it happens very often if i scroll down with the Apple Magic Mouse.
Any ideas?

I have exactly the same problem. MacMini Server i7 (mid 2011) Macmini5.3.16Gb ram.
Mini and Thunderbolt no blink-outs.
Mini and Thunderbolt and Dell 23" connected to HDMI-DVI connector, the Thunderbolt display blinks out when system is under stress as in the Develop module of Lightroom 4.
I thought it was a problem with my Thunderbolt display, and since its on a VESA mount, I didn't really want to haul in in to the Apple Store. I decided to be sure it was the dosplay...
I borrowed a MacbookPro i7 and ran it from a clone of my Mini. No problems aster hours of use. (But with only ONE monitor.) That suggested that there was no problem with the Thunderbolt Display.
I decided to run the Mini with only one display. Again no problems. I plugged in the Second monitor to the HDMI port and within 2 minutes I had my first "Blink-Out".
I ran the rest of the day without the second monitor with no problems.
I conclude the mini will not work reliably with two monitors if one is a Thunderbolt.
I was using two Dell Monitors before I got the Thunderbolt Diskplay (for 3 months) without incident.

Mini HDMI-DVI disconnects when vga thunderbolt adapter is removed

What I have found is that if the vga and HDMI adapters are connected to a monitor, I can get a signal from the HDMI-DVI adapter. But when I disconnect the vga adapter, the HDMI-DVI signal goes away too. Anybody know what's going on here?

As other threads on this have pointed to, Monoprice sells HDMI/mini-displayport to VGA cables.

Given the minor price variations, why not get a 10'?
It's very annoying that Apple's included adapters are DVI-D not -I, otherwise I could use those DVI-I to VGA adapters that seem to litter my clients spaces....

New Mac Mini thunderbolt to DVI adapter issues

Hi there,
I'm working on a new studio installation. We have a new Mac Mini that we're trying to connect up to a 30-inch Cinema HD display with DVI input. We have a Kanex C30 Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter that plugs into the Thunderbolt port and one of the USB ports (for power) on the back of the Mini, but despite our best efforts we aren't getting anything on the display. Going Mac - adapter - display results in about 7/8ths of the screen going white and displaying two green and misshapen Apple logos for about 5 seconds before it goes blank.
Ultimately we want to run it over quite a long DVI cable and currently have an Extron signal booster in place, which works perfectly from the Mac Mini's HDMI output through an HDMI to DVI adapter. However we're already using the HDMI output to feed another monitor.
So two questions really:
1. Can the Mac Mini feed two separate displays of different sizes? The 30-inch over Thunderbolt to DVI and another Apple 24 inch display over HDMI to DVI.
2. Does anybody have any experience with the Kanex or can you recommend an adapter that will work for us?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This whole process has been a very long headache!

Yes. However, only two adopters can be passive. The rest have to be active.
All mini displayport to VGA adapters are active.
Mini displayport to DVI adopter can either be active or passive. The active ones say actie and cost more than passive ones.
If the display is greater than 1080X1200 you need dual-link mini displayport to DVI adapter. All the dual-link adopters are active and require USB connection for power.

Thunderbolt HDMI HDTV issues

Ok, so I have the latest model 13" macbook air with Lion, and when I connect it to my 720p hd tv to watch movies, the display/sound fades in and out. i.e. it works notmally for 10-30 seconds, then blacks out/mutes the audio (coming through HDMI). I am using the griffin adapter. Same issue occurs at different resolutions.
The same adapter/computer works fine on my 720p projector (no flickering).
The same adapter/ HDMI cable(tried 2)/TV works fine with my pre-thunderbolt mac book pro.
Same issue with or without audio running through HDMI.
HELP!!!!

Hi I just bought a new macbook pro 13 inch. I am connecting it to my screen HP 2159m but I cannot get the same picture quality as with my old PC. It is dark and blurry in comparence. I have set it with 1080p 60hz wich is the highest resolution I can find in the settings their is no option 1920x1080 in the setting list. I called apple support but they couldn't fix the problem. I am connecting with thunderbolt - HDMI to my macbook. My PC was connected with DVI.

I now solved my issue by buying a DVI -mini display port adapter and connecting through my DVI cable to the monitor. But APPLE ...this is not good! you should resolve this issue so it is possible to connect with a HDMI cable.

You cannot use the combined HDMI/DVI jack to connect your 2005 or 2006 model Samsung TV to your computer's DVI video output jack. If your Samsung TV has an HDMI only jack, you cannot use the HDMI jack to connect your Samsung TV to your computer's DVI video output jack. I am at a complete loss right now and have a feeling that there is nothing I can do about it. I do have the Roku connected to my TV, and bc I don't have the HDMI spot, we have to use the RGB slots to connect it. The Roku does have a HDMI slot to connect it to a TV with one, and even thought that maybe I could connect something to that to connect my computer to my TV. I've pretty much decided that if I can't get an answer in the Mac community, then there isn't going to be a way for me to connect the two. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!! You tv probably has 2 seperate inputs, DVI and HDMI. You will need one these adapters if you want to connect via HDMI however on a machine as old as yours neither the HDMI or DVI will only output video, not audio.

Finally OS X has been available for well over a decade. Please look at About this Mac (click the Apple symbol in the upper left corner of the display. Then look to see what version of OS X is installed.

Apple TV loses picture output and status light flashes rapidly after 5 minutes hooked up via HDMI - DVI cable

Apple TV connected to a 2005 50" plasma monitor with DVI input via belekin HDMI to DVI cable. Unit worked perfectly long enough to get it connected to the wireless network and begin the itunes registration process when there was a loss of signal message on the screen from the monitor and the Apple TV status light flashed rapidly and continuously. Reset and reboot yeilded flashing rapid status light and no output detected from the monitor. I contacted support online and was told to return the unit to the apple store. I returned home with another brand new apple tv and connected it in the same manner with exactly the same results. Is there something with the HDMI - DVI interface that is causing this? Are there known issues with the HDMI - DVI connection to Apple TV with older plasma monitors?

The Apple TV doesn't actually support DVI. Some have managed to get it to work others have had varying issues with it.

I am trying to use an external VGA display from my MBP. Thunderbolt to DVI output works fine. I don't have a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter, so I connected a DVI to VGA adapter to the DVI end of the Thunderbolt to DVI adapter. I get no output in this arrangement, and the MBP does not seem to notice that anything is connected. I've checked the projector and the DVI to VGA adapter, and both are as they should be. Is there some reason this combination doesn't work, and can I do anything to fix it?

HDMI/DVI adapter problem?

I've had the 1st gen Apple TV since it came out and have loved it. It has worked fine on my 5 year old Sony HDTV. Since this tv does not have HDMI inputs (has an DVI input), i used an HDMI/DVI adapter and this worked fine up till now.
Yesterday i got the new apple TV and tried hooking it up to my tv. But the picture was displayed in 4:3, low resolution (looked to be 480i), and was a little "wavy".
Is the problem that my TV is not compatible with the new apple TV?
Or i was thinking that maybe i need to get a new HDMI/DVI adapter. the one i have is a few years old. are the newer adapters on the market have new/better technology?

I've been pulling my hair out on this. I have a Sony KV-34XBR800 with a DVI port that supports HDCP. According to the manual the HD suport is 1080i and 720p ..... perhaps also 480p and 480i, but i'm not sure if the latter two are supported on the DVI port. I've tried two types of cables/adapters with the ATV2 and just get a black blank screen. No picture, no apple logo ... nothing.
The audio and Airplay work great using the optical connector. And when I connect the ATV2 to my daughters newer Bravia the video works great. But on the older Sony .... nothing.
I can't believe that this is a cable problem, but since that's the only component that I have the power to change out ... that's what i've been doing.
Any other suggestions? I'd prefer to not go out and have to buy a new TV or tuner to get a $99 box working !!!!

2 Monitors via 2 Thunderbolt-to-DVI adapters to Macbook pro Retina.

I own a 2012 Macbook pro retina, and I'm looking to buy two non-apple monitors. Now I've been wondering whether it would be possible to use my 2 thunderbolt ports and attach each with a thunderbolt-to-DVI adapter, and thereby connect the 2 separate external non-apple Monitors.
