Thunderbolt mini display port cable to HDMI not registering

I recently purchased a 6" mini display port to HDMI Cable. When I connected my macbook to my HDMI on my TV the macbook pro does not show the screen as a display option. When I go to system prefrences and under displays the tv is not showing up under arrangements. The only options I have is Display and color, I do not have an arrangement option. My TV doesn't seem to see the computer either.
I have a thunderbolt port but the cable says it's for a mini display port but works with Thunderbolt, I've used similar mini display cables before with the thunderbolt with no issues. I'm on an early 2011 macbook pro running 10.6.8
Thanks!

There is a little white bar. When you have your TV connected, move the white bar to the other display. Your main desktop is now the TV screen

  • I have a late 2011 model MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.  I love the AirPlay mirroring feature with Apple TV...BUT, how do I mirror with TVs that don't have Apple TV?  I used to run a cable from my mini display port to the HDMI input of a TV.

I have a late 2011 model MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.  I love the AirPlay mirroring feature with Apple TV...BUT, how do I mirror with TVs that don't have Apple TV?  I used to run a cable from my mini display port to the HDMI input of a TV.  This feature seems to be lost in the Mountain Lion upgrade.  Did Apple feel that once Mountain Lion came out that EVERYONE would have Apple TV?  There are no settings in System Preferences/Display like there used to be...only for AirPlay Mirroring.

Running a cable to the HDMI port is still supported. (and still works on mine).
If the Arrangement tab in System Preferences > Displays isn't present then it doesn't recognize the physical connection.  Double check all cables.  If that doesn't work try a PRAM reset:

  • Can i use a hdmi to mini display port cable to use my iMac as external monitor for a windows laptop?

Does anyone know if a hdmi to mini display port cable can be used to link a  windows laptop with an 27 inch iMac to use the iMac as an external monitor. Or are there other options to connect my DELL latitude 6430?

Is the 3.5mm-to-optical cable any better than using a standard 3.5mm?  I don't know too much about this stuff.  My thought process was that if the source of the connection is a 3.5mm jack, does it make a difference using a cable that starts as a 3.5 and converts to optical?
Chances are excellent that if your receiver is less than 20 years old it has an optical input, this is a digital signal which will sound MUCH MUCH better than using an analog 3.5MM to 3.5MM connection. I recommend using the cable suggested or one with the same connections but of a different length if your needs warrant it.

    Hi Gilly,
I have no proof, but I think it will not work with an adapter, only Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt.

Drag applications from your main desktop off the right side of the screen and they will appear on the TV.  This is the extended desktop mode.

  • How can I connect my MBA 11" 2012  to my Imac 21.5" mid 2010 as a display unit. Connected using a mini display port cable and this did not work. Any guidance welcome. Thanks. John

I bought a belkin mini display unit cable( new) and connected the thunderbolt port in the MBA ( 11" , mid 2012) to the Imac mini display unit port using this cable. Pressed the CMD & F2 keys on the Imac keyboard as required but this did not work. Should I try with another cable ? Should i try with a thunderbolt cable ( recommended by appple support ) -- but they too were not sure about this. Is the Mid 2010 21.5" Imac not able to function as an display unit? Any guidance would help and will be much appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Only the 27-inch iMac and Mid 2011 and newer iMacs can be used as an external screen, so you can't use your Mac as an external screen. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
You can still use your iMac as an external display, using an application like ScreenRecycler

  • I am trying to connect my mac book pro to the tv via a mini display port and a hdmi cable, the only picture that is on the tv screen is the background picture on my computer, any suggestions?

I am trying to connect my mac book pro to the tv via a mini displayport to a hdmi cable, the only picture on the tv screen is the background picture of my mbp, does anyone know what I need to connect to my samsung tv ?

Hi there. I also bought an iWires mini Display port to HDMI cable and have an LG LED/LCD TV. I plugged it in to my MB Pro and followed the very small writing that came in the package and got both audio and video going. You need to change the audio settings from within System Preferences on your Mac to select your TV as the audio output.
My concern is the data latency - do you experience a delay between moving your mouse on the MBPro and the TV displaying the movement? It is only a fraction of a second, but certainly enough to be annoying, especially in a cable as expensive as the iWire.

  • How do I  connect MacBook Pro without mini-display port to my HDMI TV?

I have a MacBook Pro computer purchased around 2008. I want to connect it to my Panasonic HDMI TV; however, this MacBook Pro doesn't have a mini-display port. Is there a work around? I would like audio & video.
Thanks so much in advance for any help.

You will need a [DVI-to-HDMI adapter|http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10419&cs_id=1041902&pid=2029&seq=1&format=2], a standard HDMI cable to connect the adapter to your TV set, and an audio cable with a headphone plug on one end to connect to your MBP's headphone port and two RCA plugs on the other to connect your your TV's audio inputs. I know of no way you can get audio into the HDMI cable.

  • New 2012 Mac mini having screen resolution problem when I connect to either 27" LG or 22" Hannspree monitor. Tried mini display port to VGA/HDMI and HDMI to DVI-D cables... all same isse

New 2012 Mac mini having issues in connecting to third party Monitors. Connected my mac mini to a 27" LG monitor. Text looks blurred. Tried connecting to the monitor using 3 options. 1) mini port to HDMI, then HDMI cable to LG monitor. 2) Mini port to VGA, then VGA cable to monitor 3) HDMI port on mini mac to DVI-D cable then DVI to DVI cable... In all cases text is not clear. Anyone has similar issues with latest mini mac. The monitor works fine when I connect to a windows 7 Samsung laptop. Any input is highly appreciated. Thanks in Advance

Why do you use always 2 cables? There's a lot that can go wrong.
    1.) Hardware:
    - Use only one cable, best an HDMI->HDMI cable. It doesn't need to be an expensive one, they've proven to be no worse than those "esoteric", expensive ones.
    - Set the monitor to the HDMI input.
    - The modes you are listing are only "picture modes" changing color/brightness/contrast settings, not resolution or the likes, so pick the one you like best later, or enter your own settings under Custom.
    2.) OS X:
    - Usually the Mac detects the screen itself and chooses the best settings, so by default you need to do nothing than make a proper hardware connection to get a decent image.
    - However, there have been issues with new Mac Minis and particularly their HDMI ports. But reportedly they have been fixed with a software update. So, launch the App Store and check under Updates if there is one for you to install. If so, do it; otherwise you should be good to go.
    - If you require, go to System Preferences -> Displays. In the Dispaly tab, by default, "Best for display" should be selected, and that is typically true. If you want, select "Scaled" and 1920x1080, plus a frequency from the list (where higher is usually better, but just pick the one that works best for you). If you can't see a change to the better, you best go back to "Best for display".
    - If you are not happy with the colors on your screen, you'll find eventually more than one choice in the Color tab, though your particular screen should be in the list and its Display Profile should get you the best result. (Double-check picture modes on your display: if you're far off there, you won't make it much better with the Mac's settings).

  • Drive Dell 3008 WFP From ThunderBolt/Mini-Display Port to Display Port

I am trying to find the reason why my new MBP Retina Display can not drive my 30 inch Dell 3008 WFP Monitor.  When I connect them the MBP flickers as if it is detecting the display, but I never get a picture.  Does any one know if this is possible, and if not the reasons why ?  Should I have chosen a Mini-displayport to DVI or VGA connection instead?  Thanks.

Sorry I did not make that clear.  Instead of the Thunderbolt/Mini-DisplayPort to Displayport. which is the connection I am trying now with the results described...basically nothing.  Monitor knows there is a connection it just says no signal from computer.  MPB does not even show the monitor in display prefences.  I tried holding option and pressing "Detect Displays" and nothing shows up.

  • Is there a way to run dual monitors using a mini display port cable?

I want to connect my 21.5-inch, Mid 2010 iMac to my 13-inch, Mid 2010 MacBook Pro and run dual monitors with the cable because they don't have thunderbolt plugs. I wan't to use two displays for Logic Pro to expand my real estate. I'm not looking to spend over $50 on crazy adapters so cheaper options would be great.

Most likely one of the following:
    Loose or bad connections
    Bad cable(s) or plug adapter(s)
    Faulty Belkin adapter
Which adapter are you using - miniDP to DVI or miniDP to VGA?  If DVI, are you connecting to your TV via DVI or HDMI?  Are you using any plug adapters in addition to the Belkin adapter (say, DVI-HDMI plug adapter vs. a DVI-HDMI cable)?
Did this work before?  Is this a change in behavior?
Can you try connecting to some other external monitor or TV to test?

  • Macbook pro thunderbolt to Imac Mini Display Port

    Hello everyone,
As the title above says I would like to use my Imac (27 inch, Late 2009) as a moniter for my Macbook Pro ( 15 inch, Early 2011). As you may know Macbook Pro has a Thunderbolt port on it and I was wondering if it is compatable to go to my Imac's Mini Display port?
Thunderbolt > Mini Display Port ( Use as moniter not data trasnfer )
If anyone can sheed some light on this area I would be very thankful!

dsimagry, Mark wasn't asking about a Mid 2011 iMac, he was asking about a mid 2010 iMac with a 2011 MBP. That link is not applicable.
Mark, I have a similar setup (same iMac, 2012 MBP with thunderbolt) and have been working on it for a while. While the Thunderbolt ports are supposedly backwards compatible with the Mini DisplayPort interface, a bunch of reading (and an experimental purchase (and subsequent return) of a $70 Thunderbolt cable to try it out) indicates that you can't do that with a Thunderbolt cable but that a Mini DisplayPort <--> Mini DisplayPort cable should work.
As I'm in Canada, it's been a right pain to get one of those (less selection on our Amazon than yours) but I finally got one and only just tried it out this morning. It _DOES_ work, but there are some display refresh/jaggies issues on the iMac. I don't know if that's maybe because the MBP is running on battery at the moment & doesn't have enough power to consistently drive the larger display or whether there's something else wrong, but I'll be spending the remainder of my long weekend trying to figure that out. The issue is that any mouse movement on the screen causes bands of what looks like loss of frame sync 'static'.
I'll let you know here if what I eventually figure out. On the up side, this is by FAR the closest I've gotten so far.
