Thunderbolt port and magsafe

What does the thunderbolt port do and does the magsafe recharge ur mac?

The Thuderbolt port is a faster means of attaching peripherals...to date there are external monitors and some hard drives that use the Thunderbolt technology.  Speed is faster than Firewire 800.
The MagSafe is a connector that attaches the charger to MacBooks for charging and use on AC power.

  • Can Adobe Premiere run on 2013 Mac Book Pro (thunderbolt port) and display on 2010 iMac (Mini DisplayPort) using TDM. TB cable   Opt. F2 didn't work. Will a Mini Display cable work?

I need to work on Adobe Premiere on my 2013 Mac Book Pro (with thunderbolt port) and display it on my 2010 iMac (with Mini DisplayPort) using Target Display Mode (TDM). I tried using a thunderbolt cable plus Option F2, but it didn't work. Will a Mini Display cable work? Any other suggestions?

2010 iMacs do not have Thunderbolt, they have mini-display ports. You are using the wrong connection, you need a mini display port to mini display port. Please read up on what Apple says in Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • I have 2 iMacs, one has a thunderbolt port and the other has a mini display port. Would it be possible to use one as an extension of the other? If so what cable would I need.

    Hi,
As the title of the thread says. I have an older iMac with a mini display port and a newer iMac with a thunderbolt port. Would it be possible so that the older iMac is an extension of my new iMac. The reason for this is because logic x can be a abit clustered on one screen.
    Thanks

If you'll be using the 2010 iMac as the display, a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable.
It's not possible to use the 2011 iMac as the display through Target Display mode in that configuration.

  • Connect monitor w/ thunderbolt port and monitor w/ Firewire or ?

I have an iMac with a thunderbolt port. I was recently given a much older iMac with a port that looks like a fat "U" with a flat top, several USB pots, and 2 firewire ports. I would like to use the older Mac as a second monitor. I've searched and searched, but for the life of me, I can't find the combination of cables that will connect them.
This is what the old Mac looks like in the back.

  • HT5219 Thunderbolt ports and displays

I bought a TB screen and i am connecting it to My Macbook Pro 13'' & it's working perfectly, but i tried to connect my TV screen from the second TB port available in the TB screen through MiniDisplay-HDMI adaptor and isn't working, any clue?

I don't have a Thunderbolt machine but according to this article, Windows doesn't support Thunderbolt at all. That means Apple had to add Thunderbolt support in order for it to work even as it does. How would a Dell have solved your problem?

    Hall Palm Desert,
if your Mac monitor has Thunderbolt ports, and the PC monitor is on the end of the daisy chain, then you might be able to do it by connecting your PC monitor’s VGA cable to a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter (e.g. Apple, NewerTech), connecting that cable’s Mini DisplayPort end to one of the Mac monitor’s Thunderbolt ports, and then connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the other port on the Mac monitor and your MacBook Pro.

  • How can I do a separate video in and out on my 21.5" iMac, and only have 1 thunderbolt port?

The set up that I have is one 21.5" iMac using the thunderbolt port I am sending a feed to a projector and a couple monitors for our worship service (To display the lyrics). Now I am ready for video broadcasting online, I have a camcorder connected to a Blackmagic Design Intensity Extreme which has a thunderbolt port to connect to my iMac. But I have a problem, the 21.5" iMac only has one thunderbolt port and it's already in use (For the worship service lyrics). Is there any way to receive the HD video feed from the camcorder/Blackmagic set up into the FireWire port? Or use the thunderbolt for the camcorder set up and use the FireWire port to send the video feed for the worship service?

Hello all those who took the time to help me with my problem. Thank you all. Yes I do have the option of sending it back to my camera I have found again since I went into iMovie.
My problem was I did the slide show in Iphoto because I wanted to use the Burns effect and the only option was to put it into iDVD (not iMovie) from there.
By putting the shots in iMovie I can send it back to my camera BUT cannot use the Burns effect so I am left with the black side on each side of the picture in the postcard. Guess you can't have everything.
THanks again you have all been very patient and helpful.
    Stella
    P.S.
re: It's in iMovie HD 7 that the Share menu appeared. .......No, it's in 6.0.3 on mine but only in iMovie not in the iDVD where I was trying to work.

  • Connecting Cinema Display with mini display port to macbook pro with thunderbolt port

I am trying to connect a 27" cinema display (2010) that has a mini display port cable out of the back, into my macbook pro (2013) with thunderbolt ports.  The mini display port cord fits into the thunderbolt port on the Macbook Pro, however the macbook pro does not detect the cinema display and the cinema display does not have any picture on the screen.  The USB plugs in fine and sound comes out, and I have the adapter for the magsafe to magsafe 2 and that works fine, it just the actual display.  Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hello mmholt,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there’s no video on an Apple Cinema Display that’s connected to your MacBook Pro, and you’re wondering if the configuration is supported. It is supported, take a look at the article linked below for more information.
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
    1. Can I connect a Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt port on my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac?
Yes. A Mini DisplayPort display or a display connecting with a Mini DisplayPort to VGA, DVI, or HDMI adapter will work just like it was connecting to a Mini DisplayPort connector when plugging in directly to the Thunderbolt connector on your Apple computer. Click here for more information on Mini DisplayPort connections and adapters.
Also, this article provides a lot of great information and troubleshooting tips that will resolve most issues related to video external displays.

  • How to connect two DVI screens to Thunderbolt Display's Thunderbolt Port?

    Hi everyone,
I have a new MBP and an external Thunderbolt Display. The Thunderbolt Display itself has a Thunderbolt port, and I was wondering if there is anyway to connect to DVI screens to that. My goal is to have the Thunderbolt Display and 2 x 24" Samsung DVI screens connected to my MBP.
Alternatively, has anyone had success using a third party device like the Matrox 2 go to drive multiple monitors from the usb port?
    Thanks,
    Dave.

You could try a TB>DVI adapter (here's one from Monoprice) but I don't know that it will work - I'm thinking that you could have at least one of your Samsung displays use it. You may also want to see if you can find a HDMI>DVI adapter for your second Samsung display - something like this?
I know that I've seen three monitor set-ups on YouTube - but I'm not sure what was connected to what. Easy enough to daisy-chain ATDs but it gets a bit tougher when utilizing HDMI ports, etc., and I'm not sure about the GPUs ability to drive all three displays.
Oops - sorry - strike that second paragraph - I thought that you were running a Retina display MBP...

  • Mini Display port DVI adapter not working on Thunderbolt Port

For some time I've been using a mini display port to DVI adapter on an slightly older MBP to connect to my HD TV.  I recently purchased a MBP with a Thunderbolt port and when I try to connect it to my TV via my mini-display-port-DVI adapter things are not working properly.  The MBP is seeing the Philips TV but it isn't listing all the display modes and I'm not able to send any video to it.  Does the Thunderbolt port require a new display port to DVI adapter?

Let me be clearer; I've got the MDP-DVI adapter connected to a cable that is DVI on one end and HDMI on the other.  I've got both laptops so I can compare side by side.  I plug in the MDP-DVI adapter to the old laptop and all works well; I plug it into the new laptop and while the laptop does see the TV, the display modes for it are all 1080p which is wrong I don't see any desktop image on the TV unlike when I plug it into the older laptop.  This is very disappointing as I expect things to just work with Apple products.

  • Connecting a Canon HV30 camcorder vai a thunderbolt port to a new imac

    Hi all
I was using imovie 11 with my old imac (purchased Summer 2008) using the firewire connection to transfer DV/HDV video from my Canon HV30 camcorder (tape). I just bought a new 27 inch imac with the thunderbolt ports and now I am stuck as there is no firewire
The camcorder had  a 4 pin firewire output so I have tried the following
Used the original camcorder cable (Firewire 400), converted to firewire 800 with an adapter and then used the Apple firewire to thunderbolt adapter
Used a cable that converted the 4 pin firewire to firewire 800 and then used the Apple firewire to thunderbolt adapter.
In each case, imovie is not seeing the camcorder.
I know that my camcorder is not listed as being supported by imovie but has worked fawlessly on my old machine running the same software and operation system (Mountain Lion)
    Any ideas - thanks
    Kevin

    Hi epjustin,
What I said in the previous post (Oct 9 2013) works for me but I can try to explain in more detail if that helps.
Firstly. remove the battery or the ac power connection from the camcorder. - VERY IMPORTANT
Turn on the Imac and login
Attach a thunderbolt to firewire 800 adapter to the IMac thunderbolt port - you can get this from the Apple Store
Now attach a firewire 800 to firewire 400 adapter to the the end of the previous adapter. You should now have the appropriate firewire 400 connection so that you can attach the original firewire cable that came with the camcorder.
Now connect the camcorder cable to complete the connection between the camcorder and the computer
Now connect the power supply or the battery to the camcorder and turn on the camcorder. Set the camcorder up so that it exports through the cable as normal
You should now be able to detect the camcorder in imovie. If you can't see the camcorder in imovie, go into system report from about this mac and you should see an entry in the thunderbolt section relating to the connected camera.
As I mentioned above, turn on and disconnect the power from the camcorder before disconnecting the camcorder from the Imac or turning off the Imac
If you can't get things to work, you may want to try connecting the camcorder to another computer as there is a chance that the board is fried if it doesn't work
Please let me know if you need any further help

  • Thunderbolt Display + MacBook Pro w/out a Thunderbolt port?

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro (MB990LL/A) without a Thunderbolt port and a new Apple Thunderbolt Display (27-inch).  Is there any way to make these devices compatible? Would the Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter work?

  • Can I plug a mini displayport cable into thunderbolt port?

I have new iMac with thunderbolt.  I have a MDP to HDMI cable, can I use it?  Or must i purchase a new "thunderbolt to HDMI" cable?

I have a similar question.  I have a brand new MBP with Thunderbolt.  Work just bout me a 27' Thunderbolt display.  Great so far.  I also have a high-end Dell laptop.  I want to connect the DVI out on the Dell base station to my Thunderbolt display.  I have a mini-display port to DVI adapted.  Plugged that into my MBP Thunderbolt display and got the second monitor up on from my MBP.  Now when the new Thunderbolt monitor gets here, I am really hoping that I will be able to reverse the flow and connect from the DVI out of my Dell base station, to the DVI-mini-diplayport and into the back Thunderbolt port and then display the image on the Thunderbolt display.
    Can anyone confirm??
    Best,
    Kevin

  • Can I connect multiple devices to one thunderbolt port?

I have the need to connect an external monitor and a firewire cable to my Macbook Air, but with only one Thunderbolt port I am trying to determine if this is possible.  Is there such an adapter that would take my single Thunderbolt port and 'split' it into two?

Also, if you use the Apple 27" Thunderbolt Display, it will have an additional Thunderbolt and Firewire ports on its back.
