Thunderbolt port to 30" cinema display

I have recently purchased a 15 inch macbook pro. When I first tried to connect the computer to my 30" cinema display both screens flashed and did not connect. I am wondering if the mini displayport cable is compatible with the thunderbolt port?
this is the connector that i am trying to use:

thanks.

According to the specs for the 15" Macbook pro,  it says,
Make sure the mini-displyport plug is fully seated.  It's easy to miss where it looks fully in but it's not.
Note mini-displayport is physically compatible with thunderbolt so that's why you can plug it into your thunderbolt port.

Thank you, I have read that I could daisy chain the HD RAID enclosure on one of the thunderbolt ports with another monitor, if the monitor were at the end of the chain, but I do not know if the other port would still simultaneously support yet another external display at the same time.

  • Can i connect thunderbolt duo hard drive to the mini display port of a late 2008 macbook pro which do not have thunderbolt port, but have mini display port.

hi, i have a late 2008 15 inch macbook pro, which have a mini display port.
I noticed that thunderbolt and mini display port looks a like. So, my question is :
can i connect thunderbolt duo hard drive to the mini display port of a late 2008 macbook pro which do not have thunderbolt port, but have mini display port.
    thank you

    ken94538,
no, you’d need a Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter or Thunderbolt-to-USB adapter to be able to access your Thunderbolt hard drive from your 2008 MacBook Pro.

  • What plug adapter do I use to connect the new Macbook USB-C port to a cinema display?

What plug adapter do I use to connect the new Macbook USB-C port to a cinema display?

If you intend to connect your 2008 display to the new macbook then you will need a USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter ($79) as well as a mini display port to VGA port adapter ($29) and also a VGA-VGA Standard 15-Pin VGA Male to VGA Male Cable ($5).

    http://www.amazon.com/VGA-VGA-Standard-15-Pin-Male-Cable/dp/B0002AHT0M
The 2008 old cinema analogue Apple Cinema Displays were mostly pre-quipped with a mini display port rather than a  VGA or HDMI port. So you will have to connect the mini display port to VGA port adapter to your 2008 ACD and the USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter to your new macbook and connect the two female VGA ports with a VGA-VGA Standard 15-Pin VGA Male to VGA Male Cable.
But I can't guarantee though that the above setup will work for your new macbook and your 2008 Apple Cinema Display. You should double check with Apple support regarding my suggestion. Just let me know.......

  • Use Thunderbolt when connected to cinema display

I have a macbook pro that I connect to a cinema display using thunderbolt. is there any way to then also plug in a thunderbolt device - such as an external harddrive that uses thunderbolt so i can take advantage of the speed? the only thing i can figure out is unplug my laptop from the cinema display so i can plug the external directly into the laptop. but i'd love to keep working on my big monitor! my cinema display is a couple years old and has 3 USB connections in the back, but no thunderbolt one. Thoughts? Thanks!

If the drive has two Thunderbolt ports (many do), use that as the first step in the daisy chain, and cable the monitor to that.
You could also look for a Thunderbolt dock which has a separate video output (often HDMI) to which you would add an adaptor for mini-Displayport for your cinema display.

  • Connecting Cinema Display with mini display port to macbook pro with thunderbolt port

I am trying to connect a 27" cinema display (2010) that has a mini display port cable out of the back, into my macbook pro (2013) with thunderbolt ports.  The mini display port cord fits into the thunderbolt port on the Macbook Pro, however the macbook pro does not detect the cinema display and the cinema display does not have any picture on the screen.  The USB plugs in fine and sound comes out, and I have the adapter for the magsafe to magsafe 2 and that works fine, it just the actual display.  Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hello mmholt,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there’s no video on an Apple Cinema Display that’s connected to your MacBook Pro, and you’re wondering if the configuration is supported. It is supported, take a look at the article linked below for more information.

    1. Can I connect a Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt port on my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac?
Yes. A Mini DisplayPort display or a display connecting with a Mini DisplayPort to VGA, DVI, or HDMI adapter will work just like it was connecting to a Mini DisplayPort connector when plugging in directly to the Thunderbolt connector on your Apple computer. • I have a Macbook Pro 13.3 i5 w/ no hdmi port. How can I connect my Mac to TV to watch video, photo ?  Is the Thunderbolt port a mini display port where I can use a mini display port to HDMI cable? If not, what are my options??

I have a Macbook pro 13.3 w/ i5 that has no hdmi port. I want to be able to connect the Mac to my TV set to watch Video, Photos and files from Mac to TV.
Is the Thunderbolt port similar to a display port or mini display port? Can I use thunderbolt port to connect thru a mini displayport to HDMI cable or converter?
Been trying to locate a USB to HDMI cable or converter (at a reasonable price) but all I found is a displayport or mini displayport to HDMI cable/converter.
What other options are available ?
Thanks a lot for your assistance.

Thunderbolt uses a Mini DisplayPort adapter to send video and audio to HDMI. • Mini Display port DVI adapter not working on Thunderbolt Port

For some time I've been using a mini display port to DVI adapter on an slightly older MBP to connect to my HD TV.  I recently purchased a MBP with a Thunderbolt port and when I try to connect it to my TV via my mini-display-port-DVI adapter things are not working properly.  The MBP is seeing the Philips TV but it isn't listing all the display modes and I'm not able to send any video to it.  Does the Thunderbolt port require a new display port to DVI adapter?

Let me be clearer; I've got the MDP-DVI adapter connected to a cable that is DVI on one end and HDMI on the other.  I've got both laptops so I can compare side by side.  I plug in the MDP-DVI adapter to the old laptop and all works well; I plug it into the new laptop and while the laptop does see the TV, the display modes for it are all 1080p which is wrong I don't see any desktop image on the TV unlike when I plug it into the older laptop.  This is very disappointing as I expect things to just work with Apple products.

  • What can I connect to the cinema display´s firewire port?

What do you think of connecting an external hard drive to the cinema display´s firewire port? My other firewire ports on my G5 are already occupied.

The FireWire ports on a Cinema Display can be used with anything that the FireWire ports on a Mac can be used for; they are included because a Mac and external monitor may be set up in a way that prevents the ports on the computer from being easily accessed.

  • Mini Display - VGA connector for new thunderbolt port - is it works?

I am confused about absence of mini display port at a new macbooks - I need definetely to know, will thunderbolt port work with mini display-VGA connector?

Thunderbolt is compatible with Mini DisplayPort, so you can use the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter with the Thunderbolt port without any problem.
Note that Thunderbolt is just Mini DisplayPort but with the ability to transfer data. Both of them use the same port

  • Best way to set up two thunderbolt displays and thunderbolt ethernet on a Late 2013 MBP with only 2 thunderbolt ports?

I have a late 2013 MBP with only 2 thunderbolt ports. I want to set up two external displays (both have usb ports on the back but not thunderbolt so I can't daisy-chain) but one of my thunderbolt ports is being taken up by the ethernet adapter. Is it possible to convert one of my displays to plug into my open HDMI slot? Or is it better to use the two thunderbolt ports for the two displays and switch the ethernet to the slower usb adapter?

You can use a HDMI to DVI adapter if the display resolution is not greater than 1920 x 1200.
    <http://startech.com/Cables/Audio-Video/HDMI/>
or you could use wireless for your network connection.

If you use 5GHz, it should be nearly as fast as Ethernet.

  • Apple 23" Cinema Display - The USB Ports Are Not Working

The USB ports on my Cinema Display are not working. I do have both Tiger and Leopard installed on my Power Mac G5. Does this issue have to do with Leopard? If so, how can I fix this issue?

I would power down everything, disconnect the monitor from the computer, and the power from the computer and the monitor, wait 15 minutes, and reconnect the power. *Double check* your monitor connections, make sure the USB is properly inserted to the compters USB port. Might try a different port. If the USB ports of the computer work with known working devices (like a keyboard) and the problems continue, it looks like the monitor ports have a hardware problem.

  • Can't synchronize my IPod with the USB-Port of my 27 Inch Cinema Display

I use a 27" Cinema Display with my Windows PC.
It is connected via USB and Display Port.
Synchronizing my IPod at the USB Port of the PC works fine.
Synchronizing my IPod at each of the three USB Ports of the Cinema Display doesn't work.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks Stephan

Sorry if there is any missing information. I'll try to put all requested information:
The car system is the one that is already installed in my car, I mean it is not something bought externally and installed in my car. The car is a ford S-Max. This car has a complete radio system that includes a USB connection for mp3 players. It works ok but not with the iPod. The IOS installed is the last that has been released, but the iPod was not working with this connection before that update.

  • Can the apple cinema display hook up to a new MacBook (i.e. is there an appropriate adaptor)?

Is there an appropriate adaptor to hook the new MacBook (USB-C port) to the Cinema Display?

The Apple HDMI adapter allows the Macbook to be charged while it is using an external display (via HDMI)
Even if an Apple Thunderbolt display was compatible with the Macbook video output  you would not have all of the other docking features of the TB display available to the Macbook (extra USB ports, charging etc).

  • Cinema display won't turn on

So my cinema display will not turn back on if I have it on, remove the cord from computer then try to put the cord back in. However if I put the usb back in and put my mouse in the cinema usb port the mouse still works. I restarted my computer and the display turned back on but I am afraid of ever taking the cord out again. My main computer is a MacBook Pro.

I have an early 2011 MBP and a 27 inch Cinema Display. Sounds like I am having the same issue. So far, no solution.
If I unplug the MiniDisplay port cord (All Original Apple cables) from the computer, when I try to replug in the MiniDisplay Port cable - the Cinema Display does not activate. I must try several unplug-replug ins to get the Display to light up. Usually takes about 10 attempted unpluggings and replug attempts for the display to come to life.
An SMC reset - has not effect.
I am now on my second Cinema Display - My first display was replaced at the Genius bar - they said it had a defective "logic board". The second display - operated normally for about 6 months, but over the past month has been exhibiting these same problems. I still have a bit of time before the one year anniversay for the Display so the warranty is still valid. Given that this is the same issue that happened with the first display - I guess I will need to buy the extended warranty. Don't like the idea of having to pay to have this problem fixed on a regular basis.
