Thunderbolt primary display hdmi
I have a problem with my new thunderbolt display for my mac mini mid 2011.
When I connect the second dispaly ( a sony bravia 40") to the HDMI port it becomes the primary monitor and can't change it so the thunderbolt display keeps being the primary monitor.
Any idea???
Thanks

can anyone tell me how to get sound out of my macbook pro. i bought a miniport display/hdmi adapter for my tv but in network preferences i got video to work but not sond. i cant get my tv to come up as a listed device so that i can change setting on output audio. i was told maybe something is disabled as devices so confused any help greatly appreciated 516angelo
Your Mac does not have a thunderbolt port, but has a mini display port instead. It will not output sound so you will have to get sound through a aux cable.

I have and Macbook pro 2011 february. I have installed Lion with the lastest update. I would like to use my thunderbold display as my primary display. The same way when I close my MB Pro 2011, but I wish to use my Macbook pro display as my secondary display.
thanksIf your Mac has got Mini DisplayPort, purchase a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable. You won't have to change any setting, and image will show on your TV after connecting it to your MacBook Pro. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

I would like to start off by saying, that I'm a huge apple fan, even own 8 shares. I have everytihing apple, from multiple phones, two ipads, macbook air, macbook pro, time machine, and 2 apple tv's. So, I easliy have invested enough for a reponse. But, I'm really frustrated right now because I'm deployed and I would love nothing more than to be able to play my PS3 on my macbook pro. I know that this would be easily possible if mac devoted a week to a solution. Or maybe there is already software that would allow me to use my thunderbolt connection to HDMI to connect to my PS3. I have the hardware, all I need is a program that would reconize this. This would only help there sales, so I don't understand why you can't already do this. To be able to use your screen on your macbook pro as a TV for your game consoles would be a huge to boost sales. Please tell me if this is possible and what I need to do it? Or please tell me why this is not possible?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
What you want is Target Display mode. This mode is only supported in Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and Mid 2011 or newer iMacs, but MacBooks Pro are not supported, so you cannot use your MacBook as a display for your PlayStation 4.
In the case of Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, there is an adapter called Kanex XD which allows you to use the iMac as a display for a Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, but Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are not supported. In other words, you need an external monitor for your PlayStation 4. -
Can a laptop with VGA output use the Apple Thunderbolt 27" display?
I bought a 2011 Macbook Air and I'm thinking about upgrading my office monitor. The new Apple Thunderbolt 27" display comes to mind.
However, I also have a Lenovo X201 with VGA output, which I would also like to connect to the Apple Thunderbolt 27" display sporadically.
Will the VGA to mini-display port adapter work? If not, does there exist a VGA to mini-display port converter that will work and if so which one?You are thinking of that adapter backwards. It is not VGA to MDP but is "Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter". This means it will take video out of a a MDP connection and convert it to a VGA connection. It will not go the other direction like you need.
Sorry but that Lenovo just doesn't have the ability to connect to the new display. If it had a HDMI video port like some other Lenovo models, you could adapt from that but I don't know of any VGA to Mini-DisplayPort/ThunderBolt adapters.
Even if you were to use such an adapter, the video card in that laptop couldn't drive a 27" display at the native resolution so it would look very bad.
One other option would be to use the Lenovo X200 docking station which has a full sized Display Port. You would have to use a Display Port to Mini Display port adapter then you could attach the TB cable to it. There is also a USB video replicator that has a DVI-I output then then yet another adapter to get to Mini-Display.
However, both of these options would still be limited by the graphics card at 1920x1080 so it still wouldn't look good. -
Thunderbolt output to hdmi 1.4
Hi,
I am using Thunderbolt Display and as you all know it's resolution is 2560x1440. When I want to connect it something else then iDevice, the way I choose is HDMI. But the problem is it needs to be a hdmi 1.4 cable so that it can support that max resolution, that pc supports it, it has a hdmi 1.4 output but I can't find any cable which turns thunderbolt output into hdmi 1.4 output.
If there is such a cable, can u give a link please ?
or
If you know any other way to connect them, which supports 2560x1440 res. can u tell me please ?
Thank you....Sure, Premiere can deal with r3d footage just fine but it doesn't have any native 3d tools.
I've used Tim Dashwood's Stereo3D Toolbox in FCP 7 and dabbled with it in Premiere (the new version supports Premiere, not just After Effects) and it's very good. If you want to do any post-convergence or floating window work (or even digital zooming) it's essential.
Still, I prefer the Stereoscopic Adjuster filter in Edius. Have a look at their 3d QuickStart and you'll see what I mean:

Two Thunderbolts not displaying simultaneously
I purchased 2 Thunderbolt displays on Friday and have not been able to get both displays working at the same time.
SET UP: Two (2) Thunderbolt displays from a Macbook Pro 17" that also runs Windows 7 through Parallels running OS X 10.6.8.
Displays are daisy chained correctly but only one is detected. Went through System Preferences > Display and it only shows laptop and Thunderbolt #1. Tried "detecting" and nothing happens
Both displays work just not simultaneously. Apple support had me reset. When I did the second display was detected and the primary was not -- they switched.
Ethernet connection through display will only work in Parallels/Windows -- internet will not connect in Firefox or Safari on the Mac side. Firefox/Safari will connect when straight through the laptop but I am prompted for network ID (typical for me because of our firewall and me being the only Mac on a PC network)
When clamshell is closed only the primary display works
I updated everything and still no change
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to have to take one or both back because they won't work just as advertised.
I was on the phone with Apple support for over an hour and have no resolutionCan you try daisy-chaining another device, say an HDD, in between the 2 displays?

How to Force mac Thunderbolt External Display with Integrated GPU for Macbook Pro 2012?
I have been getting GPU Panic whenever I use external Thunderbolt Display.
Not sure whether this is software after(Mavericks) or hardware, if anybody could shed some light I would appreciate it.
The Current Discrete GPU will only work for few seconds 10 sec max before it became blank and require you to force shutdown. This also happened even without external display Blank and GPU Panic upon restart. So I suspected either the discrete GPU failure or software in Mavericks.
But at the moment I'm looking for workaround so I can use the intel intergrated GPU to use my Mac Thunderbolt External Display.
Thank you in advance for any input.

I have a new MAC MINI and I want to install a second monitor. I have one connected to the HDMI and it works. I can't get a signal to the other one. It is connected from the thunderbolt to its HDMI port. How can I make it work?
Could be a bad cable or bad Thunderbolt port.
You have 90 days of free telephone support on a new device. You can call them at 1-800-MY-APPLE. Have your Mini's serial number handy
You can also make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

I have a LaCie RAID Quadra hard drive (two disks in a case set to a redundant array) which for all intents and purporses appears as a normal hard drive to my mac.
When connected directly via FW800 to my Macbook Pro (2011, with thunderbolt port), it works perfectly.
For the sake of convenience, and since I am using it only at home as my Time Machine drive, I connected it to the FW800 port on my Thunderbolt Cinema Display. The display works perfectly in every way up until now.
When connected, the drive works great. However, when I put the machine to sleep, upon awakening it, I receive the "Disk improperly ejected" error immediately upon the screen coming up.
The drive is set to Auto mode which has always worked fine in the past; putting the drive to sleep when the computer is asleep, etc.
So, I only receive the disk ejected error when it's plugged into the Cinema Display; not when directly plugged into the MBP.
I have the 1.1 firmware update applied to the monitor.
Any ideas? I appreciate it.{quote}
My desktop has two FireWire ports. In the first one I had my webcam plugged in. In the second one, the External Hard Drive. I unplugged the camera and used the first port for my External HDrive and now it works! So it seems the problem is a hardware problem with the port.
I'd check to see if the problem returns when you plug the camera back into the second port, or if the drive works in the original port when the camera is not connected.
Edit: Maybe you unplugged the problem, when you unplugged the camera?

Using a second monitor as the primary display with MiniDisplayPort
I've got a new iMac, but the screen seems to be straining my eyes. I'm trying things like scaling the display, lowering brightness, changing desktop layout, etc, but if all else fails...I'd like to go back to my old external monitor.
So, my question is...if I connected this monitor to the MiniDisplayPort on the iMac, could I use it as a single primary display, or would I have to use it as mirrored or secondary?Hi Brian,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. You can mirror the displays or make whichever display you want the primary in Extended Desktop mode. See this article for details:
How to use multiple displays with your Mac
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019
The white bar at the top of the left blue box represents the menu bar and determines which display is your primary display. To change your primary display, click the white bar and drag and drop it on the blue box representing the display you would prefer to be your primary display.

Macbook Pro No Longer Recognizes Primary Display After Boot Camp/Linux Installation
Hey All,
So my old 15" early 2006 Macbook Pro (1,1) no loger recognizes the primary display. I can use an external monitor just fine, but when I go into System Profiler, it's like my primary display disappeared. I reinstalled Snow Leopard, reset PRAM, NVRAM, repaired my permissions, tried to update my mac, but litterally nothing I have tried has worked.
It started when I tried to install both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. After completing the Windows 7 installation, I restarted my computer and it just hung on the Apple logo. I could feel the fans begining to spin really fast and it felt like my laptop was on fire. I restarted my computer, let it cool down, and it hung at the Apple logo again. I rebooted it a final time, and nothing. Black screen. No backlight or image...nothing.
Is this a hardware or software issue? Did a software issue cause my screen to overheat and just die?Hi,
it seems we are both suffering from the same problem. I described mine in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4299194
Did you get your problem solved? If so, can you tell me how?
Thank you in advance!

I connect my Macbook 13" to my thunderbolt to display on my HD television but it keeps asking for a KeyChain password for "user-hp". My key keychain password is nothing but it does not want to accept and not display my screen to the Television. Suggestion
Apple support article:
Mail Keeps Asking for Password
Maybe this will help. If you monitor the "More Like This" box (top right), other threads appear. Opening them usually displays other threads.
