Thunderbolt & Screen

Hi..
i have an Imac mid 2011. One thunderbolt, which i use mostly with a Lacie Thunderbolt for video editing.
I need to add a new monitor my work, but i think that if i use my thunderbolt for the screen i will not be able to use  Lacie. There are things like the Belkin dock..whic kind of expensive for my needs. Is anyone has suggestions for this issue?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers..
L

No !  I walked away from the computer, it went to sleep and when I signed in again, no Thunderbolt screen.  In order to get the screen to open up I have to remove the cord from my MacBook Pro and put it back in again.  Previously I thought I had simply loosened the connection but that's not it.
This all started with Mavericks.  Before I simply opened up my computer and both screens lit up.
Suggestions?
Thanks, Tzipora

  • Thunderbolt screen not reacting with Yosemite

I updated this week to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro 2012, connected to a Thunderbolt screen.
All working fine, but as soon as my MacBook goes in sleeping mode, the thunderbolt screen will not react anymore.
MacBook awakes, starts up again, thunderbolt screen stays black.
Only thing that helps is turning electricity off of the screen, put it on again and everything comes to life again.
Didn't have this problem with Mountain Lion or Mavericks.

Im also having an issue with my monitor since I updated to Yosemite.  I have a mid 2010 15" mac book pro.
Everything seems to be working fine until i plug in my old apple monitor thru a mini video adaptor.  Then
my computer slows and freezes, its unusable.  I spent a few hours at the genious bar with my mac book pro
yesterday, tested fine, working fine without the monitor plugged in.  Never had an issue with Mavericks or any
    other OS.

  • Macbook air charges fine with the Thunderbolt screen connection but only sometimes with the 45 W chargers.

My Macbook air charges fine with the Thunderbolt screen connection but only sometimes with the 45 W chargers. It seems to be the combination of the chargers and the computer. I was thinking whether the Thunderbolt screen has a larger power supply which easier activates the computer to actually receive the charge. It reminds me a bit of the Nokia Lumia 800 telephone, which when totally exhausted needs a strong charger to be activated again. I am as frustrated as most others.  I have got two chargers, and both of them sometimes work, other times not. Sometimes, they start working after a while. Is Apple meanwhile coming up with a solution or advice how to handle such situation?

I just got my ATD and late 2011 MBP up and running. I've not tried running without the power adapter from the ATD plugged in, but I just tried and didn't have any problems with the display not waking. You may want to take your query to the ATD forum - https://discussions.apple.com/community/peripherals/thunderbolt_display - perhaps someone there has experienced a similar issue.
    Good luck,

In skype did you set the audio/video preferences for the camera?  Also might try doing a smc and pram reset if the camera is not selectable or enabled from skype.

If running 10.7 or later hold down Command-R at Startup.
    This should invoke recovery Mode.
    Choose Disk Utility.
Select your Hard drive. Inspect the SMART Status in the lower right of the window for "Verified".
Select the Mac OS X Volume (originally Macintosh HD) click (Repair Disk)
If errors, run again until it comes clean or gets stuck.

  • I have a mac book air 11". When I boot up connected to the huge Thunderbolt  screen it detects the detects the fact and gives me great quality. now I am travelling away from the scree it boots up, nice picture, then switches to rubbish resolution.

I have a Mac Book air 11". Normally at home I connect this to a large Thuderbolt Screen. When booting up it some times gets confused and offers me a low resolution result, but some plugging and unplugging of the screen fixes this. I assume it sometimes "sees" the big screen and sets the resolition accordingly. Sometimes does not. But now... I am away from big screen and cannot get the Macbook air on its one to deliver anything other than really poor resolution. I ahve done displays and chosen all three - but no better. And I have said Choose the Best ONe... again not luck. Any ideas. I read in back posts this was a problem a few years ago.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I believe you have a failing GPU (aka Video Card). Run AHT and see what it tells you. Do not be afraid to run it up to three times in succession if at first it does not detect an error (sometimes errors that are caused by overheating will not show up until the computer is stressed enough - repeating AHT will do that).
As an aside - the MBA was not designed to take the place of a desktop. If you are powering your MBA by leaving it permanently attached to the thunderbolt port on the monitor you are shortening your battery life.

  • My thunderbolt screen flashes when hooked up to macbook pro after downloading new lion software

does anyones monitor flash when using new lion software and thunderbolt monitor

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode with the MacBook as the main screen. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.
The TV will now have the Dock and Menu Bar and windows will open on it. But you can move the cursor to the MacBook screen and move windows from the TV over to the MacBook screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box. That will give you the same screen at the same resolution on both the MacBook and the external monitor.

  • My Screen, Apple TV Screen, and a thunderbolt screen?

Can I have my screen playing, share it on Apple TV and have another screen attached to thunderbolt?
It seems that Apple TV can only mirror which might be ok if I can use a third screen at the same time. Anyone?

  • 27" pre-Thunderbolt screen & new MMini

I am using a 27" pre-Thunderbolt Mac screen w/the new MMini. I therefore use one of the three plugs that came with the screen{thunderbolt} into the MM Thunderbolt port for my screen.
Thus I have no Thunderbolt port for my external Thunderbolt HD. There is an HDMI port on the MM but I do not know how to utilize it. Is it possible to connect by some cable to the HDMI port therefore freeing the Thunderbolt port? If so, how and will I lose any definition on the screen because of this?

The Belkin is supoosed to have a Thunderbolt passthrough,

  • Thunderbolt screen backlight failure and mis diagnosis

    Hi,
Here is one for the community.
My 27inch screen started playing up and losing the back light. The only way to get it back was to disconnect from my mac mini and re connect again and it would bring the screen to life for a short time, progressingly getting worse.
After contacting apple they agreed to diagnose it and tell me that thee problem was the LCD screen at a replacement cost of £997, obviously mine was under warranty so was replaced at no cost.
Imagine my surprise when it started happening again a few weeks later. After contacting apple again and doing some research i advised apple that having changed the screen i would be tempted to start by checking the cable which is a standard cable connecting internally to the logic board. after that i would be looking at the logic board as two of the chips provide power to the backlight.
The apple tech who was based in LA agreed with me and said he would advise the repair centre on the notes to do as suggested.
So my repair went off two weeks ago with the promise of fixing it pretty quick, knowing that a cable change and a logic board would take a maximum of an hour to do.
After checking yesterday the repair centre told me we have ignored your advise, but done our own diagnostics and have concluded that the screen is faulty!
So even after telling them "you changed it a couple of weeks ago!" please test the logic board and the cable!  " sorry sir we use apples computer diagnostics which tell us which components has failed, on this occasion it tells us the screen is at fault.
That was yesterday, Today the manager rang and told me hey! guess what..... we replaced the screen with a brand new one, tested it and it still does the same thing and loses the backlight! so again i said test the cable and logic board like i said two weeks ago.
They have changed the £5 cable and so far after a day on test its ok.
So my annoyance is the Apple software test!! how could it give a fail to the screen when the cable is nothing whatsoever to do with the screen?
Does anyone have a copy of this program? i am a programmer and want to look at this to find out how it mis diagnosed this issue.
How do i complain to Apple about this obviously useless program their repair centres are using?
    Any help appreciated

Thanks for the responses.  I figured it was defective but was hopeful that maye it wasn't.
I'm past the 14 day mark, but at this point a refurb is better than what I have.  It did it a couple of times right out of the box, then stopped.  At day 14 on the dot it started failing everytime I used it, that's when I did the factory reset and it seemed okay for a week or so.  Yesterday it went out again and hasn't worked right since.  <sigh>  Really disappointed, I could have picked the Charge or Revolution but went with the TB because I like the HTC look and feel better.  Regretting that decision now.
I'll take it in this week and see what can be done.

  • Thunderbolt and Hdmi Dual Screen MACMINI problem

    Hi there,
I have two screens, one connected via HDMI, and another via Thunderbolt, which goes into thru UA APOLLO audio interface's 2nd thunderbolt output, when my Mac Mini starts up it is fine, for around 5 minutes, but then the thunderbolt display always goes blank, the machine still recognises its there as I can still drag things out of my HDMI screen to where the Thunderbolt screen should be, I have tried new cables, cleaning sockets with antistatic cleaners, the thunderbolt screen works fine with out the hdmi screen being connected and vice versa, any help would  be greatly appreciated.
(I'm running the latest mac mini, with mavericks up to date)
    thanks in advance

Archimaredes wrote:I don't have much experience with this, so forgive me if I'm wrong, but should that not be 1080, instead of 180?
Thank you, but "180" actually means that the upper border of the 2nd display starts 180 pixels below that of the 1st one. The number may be a bit misleading, but it is how my displays are physically set up.
olive wrote:If gdm cannot behave properly, you can simply disable the external monitor in xorg.conf
This is a fabulous idea, I hadn't even thought about this! Launching the xrandr command at the start of the GNOME session is really easy with gnome-session-properties.
I tried disabling the 2nd display, but it just ignores the line and starts with GDM flashing like usual. This is my xorg.conf:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DVI-0"
    Option "Primary" "true"
    Option "Position" "0 0"
    Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080"
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DVI-1"
    Option "Position" "1920 180"
    Option "PreferredMode" "1360x768"
    Option "Disable" "true"
    EndSection
If I could get this to work, this would be a wonderful workaround.
