Thunderbolt to HDMI converter

I recently purchased a new TV and want to be able to hook my MacBookPro up to it to stream movies & such.
I purchased a Thunderbolt-to-HDMI converter & am able to play the content from my laptop to the TV, but the audio still comes out of the laptop speakers rather than the TV speakers. So I purched a headphone-to-RCA cable but when I plug that in to the laptop no sound comes out from anywhere. Any suggestions?
Thanks!!

Hi there,
I would recommend double checking the system Sound Output in system preferences. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • My connection via hdmi to my TV is no longer working. Even if I use a thunderbolt to hdmi converter

Hi, the day before yesterday I turned on my tv which was connected via HDMI out on the mac mini to HDMI in on my TV. Everything was working fine, however I have been trying to set up dual monitoring on another monitor using an HDMI to VGA adapter to my second monitor but nothing was working. I was about to watch a film from the mac to the TV wen I thought it might be the resolution on the hdmi out why it wasn't working on the monitor but was on the TV so I changed the settings and the hdmi to the TV cut out. My main monitor is connected by thunderbolt to VGA adapter and works fine. I can change all the settings for screen resolution on the main monitor and have tried every setting on it then unplugging and plugging in the hdmi cable from the mac to the TV. I get the blue flash on the screen so I know it is being detected but here is where it gets weird.
I figured I would try the thunderbolt to HDMI converter I originally bought for my iMac and again the blue screen flashes up but there is no blue flash or any sort of detection on the TV.
The whole time there is nothing showing up on the screen, even when I unplug my main display from thunderbolt to VGA (the main monitor) and connect the thunderbolt to hdmi adapter and plug in the hdmi to the TV.
I know it's not the hdmi cable as I have tested it on my youview box to my tv and it worked fine.
I also know its not the tv as iv connected my friends windows laptop to the TV using the same cable so it must be the settings on the mac.
I have tried doing a time machine restore to the day I bought it and have had no problems so far until I changed the settings. Why oh why did I mess about with it!!
If anyone can help please let me know ASAP.
It doesn't show up the HDMI output in audio anymore either, however like I say it flashes blue wen I connect the hdmi but seems to have no idea that the HDMI is connected in the display settings! It's so frustrating. I'm going to call the mac support today but if anyone on here hash as any similar problems n fixed them please let me know.
Btw I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.4. I know I can connect via a long VGA cable but that's not really the point. I, at least would like to get my mirrored desktop on my tv back from HDMI!

Ok so I happened to figure it out while on the phone to apple support. Even though the guy was very nice, I think I knew more than him! He was explaining very basic resolution principles I played about. I had the second option in displays resolution. All I did was unplug the HDMI cable, click on 'best for display' then plugged the HDMI in and my resolution on the normal monitor changed to the normal blue, then went black momentarily and then changed to a strange resolution but another window appeared that said SONY BRAVIA HDMI at the top! Hey presto! Don't know why it didn't do it yesterday - I probably left the HDMI cable in or something! Oh well. Problem solved!

  • Video does not work when I connect my Macbook to a TV using a thunderbolt to HDMI converter. Audio works fine.

I've been trying to connect my macbook to an Insignia TV. The macbook recognizes the TV is connected and changes the display ratio accordingly, but it does so in a jittery way before landing on 1080i after some time.
The audio works fine on the TV from the mac, but it's not picking up any video. When I go to System Preferences>Displays, I get two windows: one for the built-in display, one for the TV. I think this is why I'm not getting any video, but I don't know how to make it just so that the display is for the TV. The displays are mirrored, but I'm still not getting anything. Please help!

Go into System Preferences, then Displays. There should be an option to click on the tv mirroring. Click it and see if it connects to the TV.

  • Can I use a thunderbolt display with an hdmi converter to a PC?

I bought a Thunderbolt display, and have seen a ThunderBolt/MiniDisplay Port to hdmi converter.
Is it possible to use a ThunderBolt display as PC display if I use this converter?
    thanks!

Probably not.  Unlikely.  The ThunderBolt/MiniDisplay Port-to-hdmi converters are intended for connecting the thunderbolt port on an Mac to an HDMI input on a display or TV.  You can't assume these converters work backwards and without knowing exactly what converter you are talking about, and what video out your pc has ... it's impossible to say.
I would add that one should think long & hard about risking a $1000 Apple thunderbolt display by connecting it to something it wasn't designed for.

  • Recently I bought a mini DVI to HDMI converter  from eBay for my iMac 21.5 Mid 2011, but only later I realised that it does not have the mini DVI port in that. How can I connect my iMac to a LG smart TV through a HDMI cable?

This is the picture of all the ports from my iMac
This is the mini DVI to HDMI converter which I bought from ebay. And I have the HDMI cable to connect it to my TV
Could anyone please suggest me a solution how I could connect my iMac to the LG smart TV? Also I need to know if this transmits the audio as well to the smart TV?
Suggestions are welcomed. I really appreciate and thank you for your time

I would suggest looking into a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector. In this case, you may be able to use the TV as an external monitor. For this option, please confirm through additional research. I have not tested it personally.
You can also use an Apple TV, which connects with HDMI. In this case, you can use Airplay Mirroring. Not all Macs support Airplay Mirroring, so you need to check first. I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac, and it supports Airplay Mirroring. I don't use it often because my TV is in another room, but I just tried it and it worked. It had to change the screen resolution to work well, so I don't know if I would want to use it as my day to day monitor. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404

  • Thunderbolt to hdmi connection

Hello I'm trying to connect my macbook pro 2012 to my samsung tv as a monitor. I have a TB cable that has an HDMI connection on the other end. I'm thinking i need an actual adaptor that converts signal, not just a cable that connect one to the other?  As of right now when I connect the 2 nothing at all happens. Thanks and sorry if this has been covered a million times.

No, I am a media professional who uses his MacBook Pro to connect to external monitors, and needs to continue to do so.  I don't want Apple TV.  I want my laptop to work again, like it's supposed to.  Like it used to.
I have a demonstration this week at work that requires me to plug into an LCD screen and I am hoping to have this resolved by then.  I am trying to convince my department to buy a Retina Mac and thousands of dollars worth of video software for live shows, and if I can't make it work, then I can't exactly convince them (or myself) to buy what I have been researching.
Again, I don't want wireless video or Apple TV.  I don't want to buy any more stuff.  I want to know why my Thunderbolt to HDMI cable stopped working after my update, and how to fix it...preferably before this meeting.

  • Thunderbolt to HDMI - audio?

I have a Macbook Air (2012) running Maverick (OSX 10.9.2).  Will the Thunderbolt port provide video and audio to an HDMI converter cable for HDTV display of media played from the Mac?

I believe so.  See this writeup about a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable, and, in particular, its reference to audio.

Can anyone help me connect my Macbook Air to a SAMSUNG TV.  When I follow the basic instructions (Thunderbolt to HDMI connection) the screen on my computer goes grey and an error message appears inviting me to press any button to restart the Macbook.  When I do this nothing happens.  Only when I disconnect the computer from the TV does the Macbook allow me to login. The TV does not receive any signal from the Macbook even though I know the HDI port works fine.  Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?  Do I need to enable something on the Macbook?

    An update...
I downloaded Apple's (rather large!) list of software updates today, and I was finally able to recognize my iPod again. I did a restore using the iPod updater from 06-2006, and all seemed to work OK. (I'm afraid to try the new one again!)
Then I tried to re-load my music library from iTunes, and got stuck. It froze up after a while and wouldn't go any further.
When I disconnected my iPod from my computer, I find 2 podcasts and nothing else, though iTunes told me it had transferred 600+ songs. Those 2 podcasts do play fine, and the basic iPod software all seems to be intact.
So -- anyone get through this connection problem and have any ideas to share??

I am trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my TV with a mini display port to HDMI converter. Its not working. Any suggestions?

Depends on your model TV.   Read your TV user manual.  The newer models have "how to hookup" instructions for computer & games.
You can also do a forum search as well as a Google search.

  • Thunderbolt to hdmi...  is there another way to connect my Macbook Pro to my HD TV

I want to connect my Macbook Pro to my tv and have read nightmare reviews about the Belkin cable to connect the thunderbolt to HDMI...  I need to make this happen as cheap as possible and don't know which route to take?

Here is the start of the setup:
Click on the Wi-Fi Options button and provide the needed info:
Click on the OK button. Now check the Internet Sharing box to turn it all on. If the port box you checked is no longer checked, then uncheck Internet Sharing, check the port box again, then check the Internet Sharing box again.

  • How to connect imac to tv using thunderbolt to hdmi cable

I'm trying to connect my mid 2011 iMac to my tv. I have a thunderbolt to hdmi cable that I purchased. I connected the thunderbolt port to the iMac and connected the hdmi port to the tv. I turned on both devices and the tv is not getting the signal. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection.
Although I don't have thunderbolt, since you can plug mini-displayport into a TB socket, then like mini-displayport, they a a little sneaky in that you need to make sure the plug is fully seated in the socket.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click detect displays.  Then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen.  Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p).  Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz).  You should see a picture at this point.
You may have to play the underscan/overscan settings on your TV and the displays prefs for the TV if the picture is too small or larger for the TV screen.
Also, you need to set your Sound preferences to output to the HDMI connection.

  • Does Apple make a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter? Not an off brand one, a legitimate Apple product.

I have a new Mac Mini and I want to connect a second monitor through the Thunderbolt port. I have not been able to find a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter that is made by Apple. I know there are some adapters made by other companies but I would prefer to have an adapter made by Apple. So does anyone know if Apple does in fact make an adapter that is Thunderbolt to HDMI???

I use this one - it has much better reviews and you can buy five of them for what Apple charges for the Moshi:

  • ThunderBolt to HDMI with a DVI to HDMI (MacPro OS 10.9.1)

    Hello,
I'm a college student and have an old ViewSonic monitor that was given to me. So I went out and got a DVI to HDMi adapter so that I can play around with a Raspberry PI.I also thought that this would allow me to plug my Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter in as well and work fine. But for some reason the monitor shuts off and is telling me nothing is detected. I know that the thunderbolt adapter is working fine with my tv. For some reason my computer is telling me nothing is plugged in to the thunderbolt. I was wondering if anyone knew of a work around or a cheap solution to my problem?

    which MB are you using?
is it a thunderbolt or a minidisplay port?
does it appear under the Hardware/Thunderbolt section?
could it be a loose connection?
FYI, i've previously used a 3rd party HDMI adaptor on a mid2010 (mini displayport MBP) and had to wriggle it abit to get it connected to my HDMI TV

  • Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter not working

I just purchased a 13 inch macbook air and when I use my thunderbolt to hdmi adapter my Samsung monitor along with my other displays do not recognize my mac.  How can I get my monitors/displays to recognize my device?  Do I need software to get this working?
I am using an amazon high speed hdmi cable with ethernet.  Will that effect my connection?

I finally learned how to get "Detect Displays" to show up. You have to press the Option key while in the Display pane.
Unfotrtunately this does not work. No other displays are detected. Yes, the TV is on and plugged in to my computer.
