ThunderBolt to HDMI with a DVI to HDMI (MacPro OS 10.9.1)

Hello,
I'm a college student and have an old ViewSonic monitor that was given to me. So I went out and got a DVI to HDMi adapter so that I can play around with a Raspberry PI.I also thought that this would allow me to plug my Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter in as well and work fine. But for some reason the monitor shuts off and is telling me nothing is detected. I know that the thunderbolt adapter is working fine with my tv. For some reason my computer is telling me nothing is plugged in to the thunderbolt. I was wondering if anyone knew of a work around or a cheap solution to my problem?

which MB are you using?
is it a thunderbolt or a minidisplay port?
does it appear under the Hardware/Thunderbolt section?
could it be a loose connection?
FYI, i've previously used a 3rd party HDMI adaptor on a mid2010 (mini displayport MBP) and had to wriggle it abit to get it connected to my HDMI TV

Having a problem with mini dvi to hdmi. Can see the background, but must move all screens all the way to the right to see on tv. Any solutions?

I'm having an issue with setting up mini dvi to hdmi. I can connect and see the background picture from my macbook (approx 4 years old) but in order to see any screens or video, I have to move the screen almost all the way off the macbook display to the right. Any ideas why this would happen? Also, there is no audio, although when I bought the adapter and cable at the Mac store, they assured me it would handle both.

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Displays on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will makethe second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in ClamshellMode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.
No Mini-DVI adapter can carry audio. The only MacBook that sends audio is the Mid 2010 model 7,1 through a Mini DisplayPort.
If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.

Can a mini DVI Display port work with a DVI to HDMI Cable?

I just bought a Mini Display Port to DVI Adapter Along with DVI to HDMI Cable for my Mac. I plugged the adapter Into my Imac then I plugged DVI end of the other cable into the adapter when Plugged HDMI connection into my HD TV nothing happened.

I'll second that, you need the > Mini DP to HDMI Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.) and a good HDMI cable.

Using TV as display with mini dvi and hdmi connections

I want to use my flat screen tv as a display for my airbook. I have a mini dvi to hdmi connector (supplied with my mac) and an hdmi cable. When I connect, I can see my wallpaper on the tv and my cursor but nothing else. I can move the cursor on the tv with the trackpad on my mac but there are no icons, toolbars etc. What am I doing wrong and can anyone help?

If you want to see your desktop (icons, menus, etc.) you need to go into Apple Menu: System Preferences -> Displays and select "Mirror Display" under the Arrangement tab. There is also an option that allows you to move the menu bar over to the external display.

Is a 2008 MacBook2,1 compatible with a DVI or HDMI connector?

I want to buy a new LCD monitor and have been told that a HDMI or DVI connector would offer better resolution than the VGA I'm currently using with an older Mac, a 2008 (Intel) MacBook 2,1 (OS 10.6). Can anyone tell me how to find out whether an HDMI or DVI can be used with my present computer? Thanks!

(1) Is there a way the monitor I want, an Asus PA248Q2 IPS 24" LED <http://www.amazon.com/PA248Q-24-Inch-LED-Lit-Professional-Graphics/dp/B008DWH00K /ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1393215658&sr=1-1&keywords=pa248q> will work with the Macbook I have (see above)?
(2) If so, what kind of connector do I need? I think my ancient HP monitor is connected to the Mac with a VGA to DVI adaptor that came with the Macbook. Would the VGA or DVI cable that come with the Asus will work? (It doesn't have speakers, so no HDMI cable is included.) Or would there be something extra I'd need to get for an older Mac?
(3) If the monitor I want won't work, what type of monitor--besides my old Apple Cinema display, which is busted--would work with this Macbook? Thanks again for any advice--very much appreciated!

Thanks for the prompt reply; it saved me going through 16,000 permutations for nought. BTW, although it seemed to be working well yesterday, today the computer is failing to load new sites, etc. when the DIVI is plugged in, and proceeds fine when unplugged. Also, when I plug in the DVI, the screen image on the computer and tv flickers between black and then blue screens before the image stabilizes. My TV and internet are both on Comcast cable, if that makes a difference. Thanks for you help; I wish the folks who sold lme the cable knew as much. Also, no one seemed to know that you have to turn on the "mirroring" function for it to work at all.

Macbook with mini dvi to HDMi adapter - TV just showing no signal

my macbook (white 2.2ghz macbook 3,1) won't detect my Polaroid 32" tv. (i know this b/c it wont let me select mirror mode on the displays menu) any tips? will i need to downgrade my OS? i read here that some people had that problem.

Mini DVI to HDMI problems with 46" Samsung TV

I bought a cable with mini DVI to HDMI at the Apple store. My new TV works great with a PC laptop, but my MBA (13") doesn't seem to be sending all the info to the TV. I get some windows, but not all of the window. I think I'm dead in the water here. Any ideas?

I have the same setup. Try messing around with the cable, it might not be properly connecting. Mine is pretty finicky and can lose connection if it's not sitting "just right". Also, just in case, click on "gather windows" on the bottom of the display settings dialog box. Then check to see if the Toshiba settings dialog box shows up. If it does, that means the TV is actually connected but the resolution settings have not be properly set yet. So if "gathering windows" gets you your TV's settings window, change the resolution to "1080p" if it offers that. If it doesn't, just go through all of the resolutions until you find one that works/works best.

What I would like is for the closed, sleeping MacBook Pro I have hooked to the HDMI port of my Visio HD TV via a DVI to HDMI cable to wake up when I tap the spacebar of the bluetooth keyboard I have paired with it. The same Macbook Pro wakes up fine when hooked to a DVI monitor from a closed, sleeping state.
More Info: I've hooked an extra MacBook Pro I have to my TV so I can watch IP TV content. I have a dream of sitting on my couch with a tiny Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and waking up my closed sleeping MBP so I can watch 'It Takes A Thief' but I still have to steal over to the TV stand and... (I know, this is brutal)... OPEN the MacBook Pro before I get a dose of Alexander Mundy.
Why would regular BT wakeup work with a DVI monitor, but not with the DVI to HDMI cable? Is there an adapter I could put outboard that will fool the DVI port into stirring from sweet slumber?

Do you have the MBP plugged into its power adapter? That's the only way it will work with the lid down.

VGA to DVI to hdmi? For the new Mac Mini.

I'm dying to buy a new Mac Mini but I'm not ready to replace my monitor yet. Sadly, it's a VGA flat panel. It's connected to my current 2009 Mini by a VGA to DVI adapter. The new Mini comes with a DVI to HDMI adapter.
Can I plug my VGA to DVI adapter into the DVI to HDMI adapter and get video for my monitor? My monitor has no speakers, so audio is irrelevant. I just need video.

Unfortunately, my monitor is a VGA only flatpanel. I had to buy a $30 Thunderbolt to VGA adapter to be able to use it with my new Mini. Ah well, problem solved. I'll make sure my next monitor has either DVI or HDMI.
One thing I think Apple should seriously consider doing is STOPPING their practice of including an adapter in the box and, instead, giving a free adapter with purchase. That way, they won't be wasting resources (this is the second time I've bought a Mac with an adapter I don't need, and I guarantee there are people who will already have a compatile monitor and won't need the adapter either) and instead will better serve their customers by sending them home with a new Mac that works with the monitor they have.
The Mini is all about bring your own peripherals, right? Well, there are a lot of VGA monitors out there.

Mini DVI to HDMI problem, won't play DVD movie full screen on TV

I use a mini-DVI port adapter with a DVI to HDMI cable to a 32" 1080p TV. When I play the DVD player screen on the TV and select full screen mode, the screen shifts back to macbook and displays full screen on the mac and the TV displays a black looking background. This issue only started after installing Lion.

Thanks for that. I have a Y adapter (3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound just like you said). Under input options on my TV, I can select either HDMI1 input (which gives me video only) or AV1/S input (which gives me audio only) - not both at once...Could you explain how I can get stereo audio on my TV?

DVI to HDMI - no signal coming though?

This one has me stumped.
I'm running:
- Mac mini Core 2 Duo model (10.5.1)
- Sony Rear Projection LCD TV DVI-only up to 1080i
- XtremeMac XTREMEHD HDMI switch box with an HDMI to DVI adapter to the TV
I know the switchbox is handingly the HDMI to DVI OK - I have a TiVo HD and Xbox 360 which both work fine but the Mac mini isn't cooperating. I mean, it's shows me no screen of any kind... this isn't a complaint of quality
If I hook up the mini to the TV directly via DVI to DVI, it works fine: I like to drive it in 1280x720 but I've had it run all the way to 1080i. It correctly shows that it's a Sony TV and it's happy. When I plug in the DVI-to-HDMI adapter, which runs to the HDMI switch box, I get nothing. If I connect to the mini via VNC, it tells me that it only detects a standard VGA monitor.
I've tried SwitchResX while connected via VNC: it run and it gives me the illusion that I'm changing settings but after a reboot, I get nothing but the "standard" VGA modes.
I've tried DisplayConfigX (and bought it to "export" the settings) - not only does this crash when connected via VNC but the exported settings are ignored on a reboot.
I tried to delete the com.apple.windowserver*.plist files, but I wasn't able to in single user mode - told me it was a system file... even so, I'm not sure how that would help in this scenario.
So, I'm at a loss... it doesn't like there's any way to "lock in" the Sony TV options when I connect it DVI-to-HDMI, or have I missed something?

I am having a similar issue with my Mac Mini (Intel Core Duo running Leopard). I recently bought a LCD HDTV which has a VGA connector and 2 HDMI connectors, but no DVI. I want to connect it with a DVI to HDMI adapter, but when I do, I get no picture at all and the TV says it is receiving a "1P SD" signal (should be 1080P HD). However, the VGA connector works fine, and allows me to run the full 1920x1080 (non-interlaced) resolution. I know the DVI output on the Mac Mini is fine, since that is how I connected it to my old LCD monitor. I tried connecting it to my brother's Mac Mini (PowerPC G4 running Tiger) with the same results.
At this point, I suspect it is some sort of handshaking issue between the HDTV and the Mac Mini, but I have no idea how to fix it. If I get the chance, I'll borrow my parents' MacBook Pro and try to connect that. That should allow me to see any error messages that it is displaying. I may try playing around with VNC tomorrow at work if I get a chance.

DVI to HDMI or VGA to connect to HDTV

Hi I am researching buying a 40-42" LCD or plasma TV and I would like to be able to connect my IMac to the tv. I will mostly be using the TV to watch sports and to watch videos from my IMac.
1. Will 1080p videos played from the IMac produce good 1080p picture on the tv? I have ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory.
2. Or would I be better off just going with a 720p tv and playing 720p videos from the IMac?
3. Go with a DVI to HDMI or DVI to VGA cable? I understand I'll need to get a Mini DVI to DVI adapter also.

1 and 2. It should work with either a 720p or 1080p HDTV.
3. Mini DVI to (regular) DVI to HDMI. That will keep the signal digital all the way. VGA is analog. There are cables that have DVI on one end and HDMI on the other end. There are several types of DVI connectors, so be sure to get the right one.
NOTE: HDMI carries audio but DVI does not, so you will still have to run audio from the iMac headphones jack to the HDTV audio input separately.

Audio and DVI to HDMI on my G5?

I have my G5 dual 1.8 GHz wired to my Vizio 32" HDTV as the primary display with a DVI to HDMI adapter and then an HDMI cable going to my TV. I get good 720p video out of it with the original Radeon 9600 graphics card but of course no sound as DVI doesn't transmit audio. Does anyone know of any good adapters would take the existing DVI and digital audio out and convert that to a single HDMI????

Dvi and hdmi issue

so i have bought the MSI b85m-g43 recently
and I'm new to computer building
it was my first time and everything went well but in the end i had a problem with the DVI and HDMI
when i connect it to the TV i only get no signal on screen
but that only when I connect it to the motherboard
when i connect it to the GPU everything work the HDMI and the DVI
I really hope there is a solution for this problem
and if some1 could help I'll be rlly thankful to him

the CPU has a Graphics Chip in it (Intel® HD Graphics 4600 on that I5-4670k) that is what is used for the onboard outputs on the motherboard and if the graphics card is not in it should switch automatically to that one on the CPU!
it should work without a dedicated graphics card in there like you have because if you are planning anyway to get rid of that one and only have it in to get a display then its pretty much pointless as the CPU can do that on its own! A Graphics card should be used for gaming if its better then your onboard chip so give it a go without the graphics card and see if it turns on the motherboards display outputs!
(motherboards like that will switch to PCI-Express Graphics as they are usually more powerful) but before you try that what is the Graphics card in question here that you have plugged in?
