Thunderbolt to VGA adapter in bootcamp only 640x480?

Just a few weeks ago I purchased a new MBP Retina for my new work laptop. I contantly go from Windows, to OS X to demo hardware to customers. Problem I am having, is that as soon as I connect the Thunderbolt to VGA adapter in Bootcamp on Windows7, it forces 640x480 and I dont get the option to change. The adapter runs fine in OS X.
Has any one else ran into thise issue? Pushing VGA in Windows is something I need to be able to do.
Also noticed that in OS X, I dont have the option of running 1280x800 as a resolution. Is there anyway to configure either the adapter or OS X to push this oddball resolutuon for our office projectors?
Thanks
Charles

I have this same problem, discovered today in front of customers, when hooking up to their VGA projector. The VGA adaptor did not work very well with OSX either so running Windows under Parallels did not work either. Back in the office, I experimented with our old VGA projector, same problem, but I could get OSX to display and thus Parallels.  Back on the Win 7 bootcamp, resolution is grayed out and set to 640x480, too small to do anything.  I tried another sugestion of updating the Nvidia driver in Windows, to the latest version but that did not help. The only other suggestion that worked for others is to get a USB3 to VGA adaptor.  Aparently Apple needs to update their bootcamp drivers for the mini display/thunderbolt port. So until that happens, perhaps the USB3 adaptor will be the way to go.  I'm going to order one now since I cannot find it in the local apple stores or Best Buy.

  • I have a imac 2308. where can I find a thunderbolt to VGA adapter to add additional monitors

I am trying to attempt to add two additional dell monitors (vga) to my EMC2308 imac. I only have one thunderbolt port and have not had luck finding a thunderbolt to vga adapter. Any ideas?

A notable peculiarity of Thunderbolt is that it uses exactly the same connector as Mini Display Port, and that's not all. The Thunderbolt connector also carries Mini Display Port video signals. That means you can plug a Mini Display Port video cable/adapter in to a Thunderbolt connector and your monitor will work.
If you plan to do other things with your Thunderbolt connector and don't want it wasted on a monitor, you can also choose an HDMI --> DVI adapter, which for your purposes will be functionally equivalent.
You can even use both at the same time.

  • HT2494 Reboot my Macbook Pro when using external monitor w Thunderbolt to VGA adapter

I have a Macbook Pro running 10.9.2 OS X (MacBookPro8,1). I never had any problem w that but yesterday i bought an external monitor (kind of old model from LG - L1900E). Well, i was trying to extend my Macbook Pro display through a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter. It worked at first but it started rebooting my Mac. I just disconnected that and the reboot stopped.
It sounds to me like a Software related BUG regarding connection or something strange.....
I would like to have some help on how to proceed w that ? Is there a specific SW i need to install to use that ?
I am kind of disapointed because i heard that one of the major items the new OS X was about external displays.....
Looking forward a help from an apple specialist, Tks !

  • Is there such a thing as a "thunderbolt to VGA" adapter?

I am a professor at Wayne State University in Detroit and have to use the school's older computer system to project my keynote slides in class. I just purchased a new MacBook Pro and am using their newest VGA adapter, which seems to work with WSU's new-ish "smart carts", but not with the older ones. The schools tech guy told me to get a "thunderbolt to VGA adapter"--he said that would help the older system recognize my computer. Any thoughts?
    And thanks in advance.

Thanks so much. I have the Mini Display Port. Our tech guy was under the impression that there's another adapter with a thunderbolt image on it. But I told him that the Mini Display Port to VGA adapter was what apple sold me... so I'm guessing I have the right one and our tech guy is incorrect?

  • I can not connect to projector using Thunderbolt to VGA adapter

  • Connection to external display does not work under windows bootcamp, with a thunderbolt to vga adapter.

Hello guys, after searching a lot in the forum for an answer to this, I could not find a solution so this is the reason for this post.
I have a Macbook Pro (early 2011 I think) running MacOSX Lion and I have installed Windows 7 64-bit through bootcamp (version 4.0).
Everything works fine except that I cannot connect my external display through my thunderbolt-vga adapter.
The external monitor shows only the boot screen of windows (the one with the windows logo) and then, when I get into the login page it goes blank.
After reading the forum, I have done several things in order to fix this problem such as:
Restarting the macbook with the thunderbolt device connected to it.
Updated to the latest ATI drivers through bootcamp.
Removed the graphics driver and re-install it again.
I have tried to identify the external monitor through windows 'screen resolution' tool (attached photo).
    but still no luck.
Does anyone have any idea on what else I could do in order to fix this? By the way, I find it very frustrating that Apple does not have a stable solution to the problem with devices that are connected to the thunderbolt port.
    Thank you in advance

  • Thunderbolt to VGA Adapter not working with SMART board all of a sudden?

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on getting my classroom's (I'm student teaching) SMART board connected to my macbook pro (13 in).  Two days ago I tested the setup I had, Mini-DVI to VGA adapter, Mac OS X SMART software suite and it worked flawlessly.  Today I try the setup and although the SMART board recognizes my macbook via usb, the projector does not display anything.  System preferences does not even recognize the projector as an external monitor.  When I plug in my Mini-DVI to VGA adapter (already attached to the VGA cord from the SB) the screen flashes black and goes back to normal.  Official work from SMART technologies is there is no supported adapters for connecting a macbook to a SB but I have seen numerous threads about this setup working and like I said it was previously working fine. Any suggestions on what to try next? I was thinking of dual booting to an older version of OS X. Thanks.
    Specs:
    MacBook Pro 13 in
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    10.9.1

If your laptop is not connected to power (i.e., plugged in to a wall), try plugging it in.  It is not uncommon for a laptop to send the VGA signal out with less power when it is on battery power.  I've seen this fix this problem, at least, dozens of times.
Try connecting the VGA cable to your adapter while the smart board display is on THEN plug the adapter in to your computer.
Also, try connecting the VGA+Adapter to your mac before booting it (or connect the macbook to the vga cable and then reboot the macbook).  I've seen this work with macbooks using vga on projectors (or other external displays running through longer cables or crestron/extron/whatever switching equipment) many many times too.
If these fail, get your campus AV (or IT) people involved.  We have often found that a damaged cable or long run needing amplification will work with some computers but not with others.  It could be that the cable running from the smart board is somewhat sketchy.
Also, have you attempted to connect your macbook to any other display since starting to have the issue?  A bad dongle (dp to vga adapter) isn't rare.  I have a bad one sitting on my desk at this very moment.
One last thing you can try, this works for some:
    Shut of the mac
Connect it to the smart board (i.e, connect the cables)
Turn on the mac and then close the lid
This *may* boot the computer on the external dispaly (smart board)
Open the lid before it comes to the login screen.
Hopefully one of these suggestions helps.

  • HT3382 using the thunderbolt to vga adapter, i have to unplug and replug the connection to get my display to "wake up"  what's the deal?

using the thnderbolt to vga adapter, I have to unplug and replug the connection to get my disply to "wake up"  What's the deal?  otherwise works fine.
    Same on initial boot up

First try > Resetting your Mac's PRAM
There have also been others reporting problems with analog VGA connected monitors. If your monitor also supports DVI, then you may want to use the supplied HDMI to DVI adapter or switch to a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and a good DVI cable.

  • Thunderbolt 2 VGA adapter

I have had my MBP for 6 mos and have recently started making Keynote and PowerPoint presentations.  I would like to be able to connect to a projector and share the presentations in the lecture hall but everytime I plug into the Thunderbolt port on my MBP the screen flashes blue then comes up with my screen compressed and the rainbow working wheel as the pointer.  My screen is never shown on the projector and i have tried the same adapter that i purchased with other MBP, where it worked just fine.  Am i missing something or is my laptop "special"  Please help!

hmmm...it should work.  I had a macbook (13inch...early 2008) and bought a VGA display adapter to hook up to a sony overhead projector for lecturing.  I recently bought a macbook air and am using the exact same adapter for lectures...it plugs into the thunderbolt port.  Just lectured this morning and it worked fine.  Once I turned on the projector, though, nothing happened...I had to restart my computer. Once I did that, everything worked fine.
    Hope that helps.

  • My Dock Connector to VGA Adapter only shows up for a few seconds

Hello, and as the title says, I have some problems with my VGA adapter.
I am using iOS 8.1 with the iPad (3rd Generation)
So far, I have only got it to work twice, when I plugged it in, appeared for a few seconds, then disappears off my screen.
The second time I plugged it in, it worked for 1-2 seconds, then a message came up saying that the accessory may not be supported and when I pressed the button it was gone again.
The VGA cable and screen was working when I plugged in the Thunderbolt to VGA adapter so I think there has to be a problem with the iPad adapter or something.
If anyone is able to give help, I would be grateful.
    Thank You

Ah, that does make a difference. Orange is the color of the light when it's charging. The LED can be, and sometimes is, really red when there's a hardware problem, but it never should be red. If yours is never really red, that's good.
Read the article I've linked below, with particular attention to item 3 under "Troubleshooting". I suspect the power supply in your house, or at least at the outlets you've tried, is very noisy. But testing with a different AC adapter may tell the tale, and testing with both adapters in a different building might confirm the conclusion.

  • Windows 7 Bootcamp and Thunderbolt to VGA Adapters for External Displays MacBook Pro i5?

Is it possible to connect an external moniter to a MacBook Pro using a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter in Windows 7 (professional)? I have tried and tried, when booting, both moniters (both laptop and external) show the "Starting Windows" page, but the external blacks out on the user selection screen. That gives me hope... is there a driver out there that will let me use the external display in Windows 7?
    MacBook Pro
    i5, 4gig, 750gig.
    Windows 7 Pro
    Mac OSX Lion
    LG Flatron Wide
DisplayPort to VGA adapter (not apple brand, purchased on eBay).
    Thanks.

You shouldn't require a driver.  I would try booting as usual, then plugging in your external display.  In windows, you can hit "command-P" to toggle between your external display options (mirror, extend, etc.).  Once you do that, you should see the new display show up.
