Thunderbolt Transfer iMac to iMac?

Hi, I have just brought a 2nd iMac 27" both exactly the same running X 10.8.4 I want clone the new one with old one. I tried using the Immigration Assistant using Thunderbolt but I couldn't get it to work. Any suggestions?

Connect the two via the Thunderbolt cable. Boot the Target computer into Target Disk Mode. Boot the Source computer normally. The disk icon for the Target should appear on the Source's Desktop. Now use Migration Assistant to transfer your data, this time. I don't think the "Immigration Assistant" will work.

  • How to transfer with thunderbolt from iMac to MacBook Air?

I have a new MacBook Air and I'm trying to migrate files from my iMac over a Thundertbolt connection. It doesn't work. Anyone else have this problem?

You have not told us which versions of OS X either machine is running.
Assuming both are running Mavericks (as they should be), this describes how to migrate using Thunderbolt:

  • Transfer iMac to MacBook Pro

Yesterday I purchased a new 15" Retina Macbook Pro to replace my current 27" iMac.  When I asked the salesperson for the best way to transfer my info over I was told to purchase a firewire cable & use Migration Assistant.  Well, I get home & open the box & my laptop doesn't have a firewire port (something I probably should have known to start, but I never really use those ports, so I didn't realize till I opened it), just usb, hdmi & thunderbolt ports.
Can someone please advise me of the best way to transfer everything over?  I started to do ti wirelessly last night & it said it was going to take over 30 hours.
    Thank you!

you purchased the wrong cable - Salesperson should've know better.
in any event - you can try via ethernet but you need to purcahse a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter.

  • Problems with data transfer iMac to imac

I am transferring information from a 2008 iMac to a new 2014 iMac using an ethernet cable and a thunderbolt/ethernet adaptor. It has taken over 21 hours so far. Is this normal? At the Apple store they suggested it would take around 6.
The new iMac has a screen saying 'Transferring your information' and a moving stripy blue and white line which is presumably to reassure me that something is happening - it isn't!
I followed the instruction on the Apple website. Since then, I have read that one should turn off wifi on both computers before using Migration Assistant (I didn't because that wasn't in the directions).  I can't access the new computer but have turned off the wifi on the old one.
There is about 319 gb data on the old computer.
What shall I do? I need to be able to use the computer for work tomorrow.
How can I stop the data transfer? There is no obvious means of doing so, there is also no information of how long it would take or how long might be left
    Thank you

As Woodmeister50 told, direct connect between two iMacs via Ethernet cable is much faster than via adaptor, I suppose.

  • Using Thunderbolt on iMac to Firewire on MacBook Pro

I have an old iMac with does not have Firewire and a new Retina MBP which does not have Thunderbolt - so I am using a Thunderbolt to Firewide connector and have the 2 systems connected (physically). I want to transfer / access files on my MBP from my iMac but can only seem to acess (connect to each other) via WiFi - if I turn off WiFi on one system to try and force the Firewire connection is does not work (i.e. cannot connect).
What am I doing wrong. (note using the Network Utility I can ping the Firewire connection).

  • Transfer iMac G4 Flat Panel files from EHD to iMac G5

I just bought an iMac G5. My Flat panel G4 went South, (Motherboard/ Power Supply, GONE, NO POWER) I have bootable copy of G4 files, (Super Duper) on an external HD. What files can I transfer to the G5, and how do I do it, please. My wife needs her email files from the old files.
    Thanks:
    Lyle
PS: My profile shows the old Mac

You can mount the external onto your G5 desktop and take anything you want off it, just make sure you put things in the right place. Congratulations on having the foresight to have the bootable clone, you are in the happy position of having everything you need from the old G4 available to you.

  • Mini DP on MacBookPro to thunderbolt on iMac

I have a MacBook Pro that I purchased in December of 2010. It does not have a thunderbolt port. I just purchased an iMac, and would like to be able to use it as an external display for the MacBook Pro. From what I've found, there is not currently a direct way to do this. Has anyone found a way to do this with non-apple cables? Is there such a thing as Mini DP -> VGA -> Thunderbolt or Mini DP -> HDMI -> Thunderbolt? I don't want to buy a buch of cables and not have it work, so I just wanted to see if anyone has found anyting that works. Thanks!

The iMac will not work as an external display to your MBP or any other machine unless the MBP (or other machine) has Thunderbolt. Sorry it's that simple! Apple explains more in Target Display Mode 2011 Macs.

  • Macbook pro thunderbolt to Imac Mini Display Port

    Hello everyone,
As the title above says I would like to use my Imac (27 inch, Late 2009) as a moniter for my Macbook Pro ( 15 inch, Early 2011). As you may know Macbook Pro has a Thunderbolt port on it and I was wondering if it is compatable to go to my Imac's Mini Display port?
Thunderbolt > Mini Display Port ( Use as moniter not data trasnfer )
If anyone can sheed some light on this area I would be very thankful!

dsimagry, Mark wasn't asking about a Mid 2011 iMac, he was asking about a mid 2010 iMac with a 2011 MBP. That link is not applicable.
Mark, I have a similar setup (same iMac, 2012 MBP with thunderbolt) and have been working on it for a while. While the Thunderbolt ports are supposedly backwards compatible with the Mini DisplayPort interface, a bunch of reading (and an experimental purchase (and subsequent return) of a $70 Thunderbolt cable to try it out) indicates that you can't do that with a Thunderbolt cable but that a Mini DisplayPort <--> Mini DisplayPort cable should work.
As I'm in Canada, it's been a right pain to get one of those (less selection on our Amazon than yours) but I finally got one and only just tried it out this morning. It _DOES_ work, but there are some display refresh/jaggies issues on the iMac. I don't know if that's maybe because the MBP is running on battery at the moment & doesn't have enough power to consistently drive the larger display or whether there's something else wrong, but I'll be spending the remainder of my long weekend trying to figure that out. The issue is that any mouse movement on the screen causes bands of what looks like loss of frame sync 'static'.
I'll let you know here if what I eventually figure out. On the up side, this is by FAR the closest I've gotten so far.

  • Can I add thunderbolt to imac 2010?

    Hi,
I made a bit of a stuff up and bought the wrong drive for a friends iMac.
I incorrectly took his specification down as being a 2011 iMac when it was actually a 2010. This meant I specified a thunderbolt drive (Promise Pegasys R4) thinking the iMac has thunderbolt. I was wrong!! It only has mini display and Firewire 800.
I see some thunder bolt to firewire docks are due out soon but is there a product that will allow me to add a thunderbolt interface to the iMac?
Something along the lines of a PCI type card or a Firewire 800 to thunderbolt adapter?
    Thanks,
    Gerrad.

You cannot add Thunderbolt to any iMac that didn't come with one, at least as of today though probably also for the foreseeable future. There are no PCI slots in your iMac, and I've never seen a Firewire to Thunderbolt converter even proposed, and given the technology I doubt that one would be practical if even possible.
    Regards.

  • HT2494 thunderbolt on imac charges macbook

I have a Macbook Air and I'm considering purchasing a 27" iMac.  I like the idea of using iMac for its display in addition to having it's storage capacity and processing power when my MBA is not adequate.  My question is, does the Thunderbolt connection also charges my Macbook Air?  The idea of using just one cord to connect my MBA to an iMac is appealing.

The iMac will not work as an external display to your MBP or any other machine unless the MBP (or other machine) has Thunderbolt. Sorry it's that simple! Apple explains more in Target Display Mode 2011 Macs.

  • New MBP thunderbolt to imac 2009 display port?

    Hello,
Im confused.  I have a new late 2011 MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt and
a 2009 iMac 27" with Display Port.  If I purchase the thunderbolt cable
can I use that to use the iMac display as an external monitor for the MacBook Pro?
    thanks

    Have a read here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Thunderbolt/10.6/en/30822.html
To use a MiniDisplayPort-iMac as an external display for your ThunderBolt-MacBook Pro you need a MiniDisplayPort-to-MiniDisplayPort cable.
ThunderBolt cable would only work when the iMac also has a ThunderBolt port.

  • What's the best setup / use for Thunderbolt + SSD iMac ?

    Hi!
I'm testing one of the new 27" iMacs (i7, 16gb ram, SSD, 2tb internal HD, external Promise Thunderbolt disk)
I have until Monday to decide to keep it or return it and I'm doing this test to see if it would make a good second computer for our editing (primary is 8 core MacPro).
I can either afford this 27" iMac with a Promise Thunderbolt disk OR anoher MacPro with 4 internal disks.
Can someone please share with me how I would get max performance out of the iMac-setup?
Here's what I THINK prior to adding the Thunderbolt disk:
Internal SSD => Lion + apps
Internal HD => imported videofiles, scratchdisk, cache etc. and export disk
But then......... how should the situation change when adding the Thunderbolt drive ?
Is the Thunderbolt so fast, that all video data should be placed there or would I benefit from placing SOME part on the internal HD, and OTHER parts on the external Thunderbolt ?
Or even more complex ........ should I use all three disks (also the SSD) for different parts of the video / process and if so, what's your thoughts?
Or......... would you go for yet another 8 core Macpro without SSD and Thunderbolt??
Thank you for the inputs on this

Are you only using one Thunderbolt disk?  If so, IMHO, you're wasting the beauty of TBolt.  To make much better use of it will cost a pretty penny, but you end up with a 4, 6, or 8-disk external RAID enclosure.  In that, you stuff a bunch of drives and create however many RAID volumes you want.  Preferably a couple of separate RAID0 volumes for the speed (raw data on one of them, scratch space on another, backing the raw data up elsewhere).
However, one TBolt disk is really a waste.
Were I buying a Mac right now, I'd get the following:
    6-core 3.3GHz Mac Pro
aftermarket SSD (to hell with Apple's pricing)
    aftermarket RAM (see above paranthetic)
2 10k WD SATA drives for an internal software-only RAID0 array for scratch
    aftermarket ESATA PCIe card
    ESATA enclosures with drives
That last bullet is "up to you" bit.  You can do 2 external enclosures with RAID0, RAID1, whatever works for storage and speed.  And it can be built piece-meal as you need to expand.
Why did I pick the 6-core vs. one of the 2 x 4-core machines?  Horsepower, pure and simple.  Those 3.3GHz 6-core chips are quick little bastards (compared to the rest of the Mac Pro line) and you really want raw number crunching power vs. a bzillion cores.  Put the apps and OS on the SSD.  Scratch space on the internal 10K drives.  Then figure out how to split the storage up with your external enclosures.
When you're ready, grab a Quadro 4K card and enhance your video editing speed substantially.

  • Photo transfer IMac to IPad

When syncing my photo albums from the IMac to the IPad, the vertical photos rotate to the horizontal. I had 260 photos on the album. I also have 17000 photos on the IPad, but I have 11.1 gb space remaining. How do I prevent this from happening?

With iTunes. Go to your iPad>Photos and check "Sync Photos" and either select all or select the ones you want.

  • How to transfer iMac photos to iphone 5S, how to transfer iMac photos to iphone 5S

New to IMac and Iphone so question is "How do I copy photos from IMac to Iphone 5S?"

The easiest way is to use iPhoto or Aperture to "share" the photos on iCloud. You iPhone or iPad can easily access them from there and they do not occupy any memory space on the iOS device unless you actually download them.
