Ti Powerbook parts to sell

I spilled water and on and damaged my titanium powerbook G4 and recently upgraded to a new macbook pro. In the meantime I took my old powerbook in to a local certified apple retailer and repair shop and had them test each salvagable part and package each piece individually. What I'm wondering is does anyone have a suggestion as to where I can go online to find people who need used powerbook parts? Message boards? Online resellers? If anyone has ANY suggestions I would really appreciate it.
Thank you!

Hi Agrace,
eBay is an excellent place to sell spare parts. If you properly mark your auctions as parts salvaged from a broken laptop there will be many people looking to pick up these items to service their own laptops. It is also quite common that broken and non-working laptops are sold simply for the spare parts that can be salvaged.
While they won't fetch as much as a working unit, a TFT screen for example can still get you a nice price.
Good luck!

  • Cleaning my Powerbook before I sell it.

Hello, I am a PC user and bought a Mac Powerbook G4 12inch notebook from a co-worker. After having it for awhile I have decided to sell it and stick with PC's.
I need to clean my info off it. Is there a simple way to clean up the PC without a complete resetting of the computer? The computer came with NO discs and currently has Word, excel, etc on it and I don't want to lose it. I hate to say it, but I'm a moron when it comes to Macs. I can't even figure out how to delete some word docs or some web site favorites.
Any suggestions would be helpful. Even a suggestion of where to take it to have it done. I have a couple passwords, etc I would like to know will not be on it when I sell it.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi MacRookie and welcome. Sorry to hear that you are going back to the PC world. At least you gave Macs a try
If you'd like to keep all the programs but remove your personal information, such as word documents, web browser prefs, etc) there are simple ways to do this without reformating the drives (and as you said, since you don't have the OS disks, would be a tad difficult).
First the web browsers. Most of them, if not all, have a Clear Cache and/or Private Data option(s) under the menu item that has the browser name (in between the apple and File). Click there, then preferences, then usually under the option privacy. For firefox, check the security tab to make sure you removed stored passwords.
To remove bookmarks, you could just select Bookmarks --> organize Bookmarks (menu options bookmarks) in each open browser, then delete them.
TO delete files from the hard drive, drag any folder you have created into the trash can. TO make sure all files that you may have downloaded are going to be deleted, open up a window in the desktop, then open the documents folder and make sure it is empty. then open the the other folders (music, movies, pictures) just in case. Last, open the hard drive by clicking it's icon, then open the folder "users" go through any folder there making sure that there is nothing personal in them.
Lastly, make sure you are in the finder, then under the menu item labled Finder, select SECURE empty trash and click ok. Will probably take a while.
Did you get the computer with all the login info on it preselected? so that you didn't run your own set up?

  • Switching from Powerbook (OS 9.1) to MacBook Pro (OS 10.4.6)

For the past five years I've been using a Powerbook G4 Titanium running OS 9.1. I recently upgraded to a MacBook Pro, and now I'm concerned about transferring all my files from the old mac to the new one. Once I've transferred everything over, I intend to wipe the Powerbook and either sell or donate it.
Let me just say that I am completely new to OS X and never understood OS 9 in detail. I used the Powerbook primarily for email/internet, photos, music, and word processing, but that's about all I know how to do with it.
To begin with, I copied the important files from the Powerbook onto a LACIE external hard drive, and from there to the MacBook Pro.
So far so good, but I'm worried for two reasons:
1.) What if I've missed something?
2.) What if some of the files I've transferred will not open with OS X programs?
I'd hate to realize I'd missed something very important after the Powerbook has been wiped clean.
Any suggestions for making this a successful transition would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi, Siren.
Any suggestions for making this a successful transition would be greatly appreciated!
Here's one: Keep the Tibook. You will want it, if not need it desperately, as you make the transition from OS 9 to OS X and to a Mac that can't run any OS 9 application, even in Classic mode. Don't part with the Tibook until you've satisfied yourself that you have OS X applications that can handle every important file type you accumulated while you were working in OS 9. I daresay you will soon enough come to love OS X — I did, after avoiding the transition as long as I possibly could — but it will take some time to equip and familiarize yourself with all the software you need to live in an X-only world. Meanwhile, having the Tibook to fall back on could save your sanity. Unless you absolutely must dispose of it ASAP, don't.

  • Are All PowerBook G4 Display Assemblies swappable?

My PowerBook G4 1.5 Ghz display is cracked and needs to be replaced. I don't want to send it into a shop for the $700+ repair. I would like to attempt replacing my display assembly with a USED display assembly.
Does any one know if i can replace my display assemby with another PowerBook G4 17 such as a 1.0 GHz or the 1.33 or 1.67Ghz?
I plan to buy a brain dead 17" on eBay with a functioning display and swap it out. This is not my main computer and just a hobby project that i plan to give to a friend if I am successfull.

  • PISMO Powerbook G3: Pressure on wrist rests turns off

    Hi,
I just revived an old Pismo and it's working great, but I'm still stuck with the same problem. Whenever I put pressure on the wrist rest near the track pad, the computer immediately shuts off. If I put pressure anywhere else, including on all the items under the keyboard, I have no problems, so I feel like I've narrowed it down to some sort of loose connection/cracked board or something under or near the trackpad.
Is there anyone that's into Pismo's that might have an idea of what might be causing it (and how to get to it--I've been reading a great take-apart tutorial here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/PhotoAlbum7.html).
    Thanks!
    Bob

    Bob,
Here is a picture of the top case which includes the trackpad, etc:
    http://www.ifixit.com/PowerBook-Parts/G3-Pismo-Upper-Case/IF106-006
Here is a picture of the power board which lies under the trackpad:
    http://www.ifixit.com/PowerBook-Parts/G3-Pismo-Power-Card/IF106-008
If you were to disconnect the trackpad ribbon cable, you may be able to eliminate the top case. See step #32 here:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/PowerBook-G3-Pismo-Upper-Case/31/11#s79
You might also try this: Grab each side of the powerbook with the left and right hands away from the sensitive area. Now provide a little twisting and bending to see if the 'book shuts down.

  • What happens with dead powerbooks? i need to replace aluminum components

Does anyone know where to look for (possibly used) replacement aluminum components for my 15" power book.
    The bottom pan assembly.
    The rear display housing.
and even the top case track pad assembly.
I love her dearly but she needs attention, fell out of my Bag. Everything works great but it looks very beat up....and bent... HELP!
There must be other powerbooks which have had internal problems which still have good external components??

  • Calling all true Powerbook geeks-problem w/hard drive (sort of)

Ok, here's the deal. My old PowerBook G4 (manufactured in 2001) has a PMUnit that had pretty much gone to h in a hand basket so... I removed its hard drive and sold the whole thing to someone for them to play with/fix. I tried to put the hard drive in a case I bought at Radio Shack so I could xfer the stuff that was on that drive and then erase and zero the drive out (with hopes, of course, that I could at least make the little drive into a nice small external extra drive to use for this or that).
I got the data off the drive fine and the drive seems fine BUT... here's the deal - it doesn't quite fit into the standard case for this size drive. The Mad Dog case, for example, at Radioshack which is typically used, I understand, for these size of drives, is just a hair too small... sort of though it would fit save for the little black bolt type things on the side of the hard drive (which prevent the thing from slipping nicely into the case) and the screws for the board in the case which don't really sit flush after you screw them in through the drives screw holes. So - people with more experience than I here: what am I doing wrong? People on Craigslist said this case should fit these drives without a problem and many there say they've done this very thing.
I know someone here has probably done this. It's my drive and I want to be able to still use it even though the PowerBook itself is gone. Help!

AH: I hope you haven't already stripped the unusually soft heads of the screws by trying to use the wrong type or size of screwdriver to remove them. That would leave both you and the PB's next owner with a problem, for which the solution might be here (note the "might"):
    http://www.ifixit.com/PowerBook-Parts/G4-Aluminum-15-Inch-Screw-Set/IF154-022
But N.B. the following note on that page:
"Includes all screws except those from hard drive bracket and display assembly."
    (boldface added)
You might have to call and find out whether the screws not included in the kit are the very ones you need, or whether those are something different.

  • Purchasing powerbook outer case?

I have some cracks and dings on the bottom part of my power book. I have no intention of buying a new computer, but would rather renovate it. Anyone know where I can find one online?

  • PowerBook G4 17" 1.5GHz & Linksys WCG200 Gateway

    Summary
My Mac won't get the full downstream bandwidth (9 Mbits) with either wireless or wired ethernet, but my roommate's Windows computer gets the full amount (and then some) with his wired ethernet connection. My ISP and Linksys both report that everything is working fine. What's going on with my Mac?
    Full Description
I recently got a Linksys WCG200 v.2 Gateway (cable modem/router in one device) and set it up with my ISP (Cox Communications). Our service is supposed to be 9 megabits downstream, and 1 megabit upstream. I connected to the router via wireless and wired, and have been to four different speed test sites only to discover that my downstream speed is never faster than 3.5 megabits. The upstream is still getting up to as fast as 1.3 megabits.
I called Cox to ask them if perhaps they had not provisioned the proper amount for our account, and he verified that he had in fact dedicated 10 megabits to our account and that it was in fact being delivered to the modem at 10 megabits downstream and 1 megabit upstream.
Next, I called Linksys to ask if there was something wrong with the WCG200 gateway and they suggested the standard reboot and reset options which didn't do anything to solve the problem. They suggested that the device may be defective and I should return it to the store where I purchased it. Before I did that, though, I tried two more things.
My roommate has a Dell with WinXP on it, so he fired it up and tested the speed at a few different speed sites to notice that he was receiving between 9 and 12 megabits downstream and 1 megabits upstream. He was hard wired to the gateway, so I tried it again on my PowerBook, but still I was getting no faster than 3.5 megabits downstream.
I tried calling Apple, but they just said that it was probably the gateway or Cox, but I know that's not true because if either of those weren't working/configured properly, then my roommates Dell wouldn't have been able to get the full (and then some) downstream speed. The agent simply had me remove my SystemConfiguration folder and then reinstall Tiger, which neither did anything to fix the problem. What a waste of the AppleCare Protection Plan!
I'm pretty convinced that my last test has narrowed down the possible cause of the problem. I inserted my Cisco 350 Aironet PCMCIA wireless card to test to see if there might be a problem with either my AirPort Extreme card or the ethernet controller on the PowerBook, and to my surprise, I was able to get 5.5 megabits downstream consistently. The Cisco card is 802.11b.
I ran one other test by jumping on my neighbor's wireless network which is rated at 4 megabits downstream, and I was able to get the full 4 megabits downstream with my AirPort Extreme card as well as with my Cisco card.
Due to the improved functionality of the Cisco card and the fact that my roommate's Windows computer was able to get the full amount, I'm pretty convinced that there must be a problem with the way my Mac is communicating with this particular Linksys gateway device which is causing it to not receive the full downstream amount. However, I have no clue where to go from here as far as more troubleshooting techniques or possible fixes for this problem.
    Please help!

I don't know the answer but am curious--do you need to make the upgrade because your 1.5G board is dead, or because you'd like a little more speed?
If the latter, I think you'd be disappointed. In doing a number of upgrades on desktop machines, I've found that, although calculated benchmarks may look better with any upgrade, you need a 20-30% boost in processor speed for the increase to be noticeable in normal use. When I upgraded an old G3 from 300 to 500 mhz --a 40 percent increase--that benefit was crystal-clear. When I compare my 1.0G PowerBook G4 to my 1.25G PowerMac G4 tower (same OS, bus speed, RAM, and VRAM), I see little if any difference in day-to-day computer use from the 25 percent advantage in speed in the desktop model
If the need is for speed, you could end up with a costly upgrade that doesn't "feel" any faster.
As to you real question, it might be better to contact a company selling PowerBook parts to see if they can shed light on the logic board interchangeability. I've bought parts from this firm:
    http://www.powerbookguy.com/xcart/catalog/index.html
and found him to be an excellent vendor. Call and ask--the toll-free number is on the main page.

  • Idea for Adobe....SELL FREEHAND!!

Face it...both these programs were at their best when they
had a good healthy competition going. So, how about it Adobe? Maybe
enough of us Freehand lovers could take it off your hands and get
    that competition going again!

As to whether FH will ever be updated, I doubt Adobe is doing
much more than letting this place exist because it's a safe way to
let frustrated FH users vent... and vent and vent.
    (;->))
But I'd like to address a few points some of you have brought
    up.
I don't think Apple has any compelling reason to create a
vector illustration tool. All their iApps address interests that
have a broad-based appeal; I just don't see a vector app having the
same clout. It's a more specialized tool with an appeal for sign
makers, graphic designers and cartographers. As cool as those
professions are, their numbers pale compared to how many run around
with a digital camera, or who like to mix their own music
    selections.
But even if Apple decided to release an Apple-branded vector
app, why would they buy such creaky old code? They'd be better off
doing something from scratch, something that takes full advantage
of modern chip-sets and OS'. Were Apple to show interest in
snagging the bedraggled remains of FreeHand, it still begs the
question: doesn't it take two parties: a seller as well as a buyer?
Why does anyone still think Adobe is ever going to sell FreeHand,
    period?
As for those of us grimly vowing to use FH in Classic mode
until our teeth fall out, well, right on. Good luck with that, I
say! Me, I'm looking for something I can use well into the future.
Whether that solution is provided by Adobe, Apple, or someone else
altogether, I really don't care - as long as it works on a Mac and
is an excellent alternative to Illustrator I expect I'll be a happy
    camper.
And as to whether or not Adobe one day drops Mac development
of its apps, the way things are going recently that will be a cold
day in, ahhhhh, Hades. The Mac platform is more viable and popular
than ever before. Adobe abandoning it would be a moronic move. Not
that it couldn't happen but... I don't see it any time soon.
I hope that at least some of the dismay and anger on this
board will dissipate once Adobe rolls out CS3 and we get to see
what goodies have been injected into the new Illustrator.

  • Apple Part No. for Keyboard

Can someone tell me what Apple part numbers are compatible? I know there's usually more than one.

Ask any of the following Powerbook parts vendors:
    http://www.pbparts.com (parts and repair work)
    http://www.dttservice.com (parts and repair work)
    http://www.powerbookresq.com (parts and repair work)
    http://www.tekserve.com (parts and repair work)
    http://www.welovemacs.com (parts and used equipment)
http://www.ifixit.com (parts and excellent, illustrated online take-apart instructions)
They will need to know whether your Powerbook is currently equipped with a backlit keyboard or not (it was optional in that model). Whether you can replace a non-backlit KB with a backlit one, I'm not sure.

  • What would you do with a PowerBook 1400cs?

    Hi!
What would you do with a PowerBook 1400cs? Sell it for almost nothing? Give it away to somebody?..
I just thought you may share some ideas about it!..
It was my first portable mac (before I had a LCII), but I have to move away from a place and I have a lot of stuff..
    Thanks!!

    Give it away to somebody?..
Yes, why not? As you know, this computer is perfectly good for word processing. With a modem, it can be used for email and light web surfing during travels. Someone might even want to try to use it wirelessly.
