Ti4200 VTD 8x (MS-8894) Fan rattling

I have had my GeForce4 Ti4200 VTD 8x (MS-8894) for almost a year, and overall I have been very happy with it.  The problem is that there is a rattling sound that the fan makes at start up.  It used to be quiet enough to ignore, but in the 11 months that I have had the card, its been getting louder and lasting longer.
Any ideas on how to fix it?

a little add on to my last post... I was checking of something else when an idea occured to me.  I googled MSI Ti4200 and wire, and sure enough, there were a couple of people complaining of noise from their card, the fan blades were hitting the fan power wire.  I checked, and sure enough, there it was.  I used a small set of needlenose pliers, and voila!  No noise at all on startup.  Once again, thanks for your help!

  • Ti4200 VTD 8x (MS-8894) Fan dead

    Hi,
The fan on my graphic card doesn't spin anymore unless I push it a bit, it'll run for a few minutes and then stops so it needs to be fixed (temperature around 72 C).
The manufacturing date is feb 2003 so it should still be under warranty I think (but not sure)
I guess I could RMA the card but I feel a bit insecure about this, never done this before and don't really know how to proceed. Any recommandation of wich delivery service I should use?
Or if I could simply get another fan to change it myself it would great (as long as I have instructions on how to disassemble the card and what kind of thermal coupound it takes to put it back in one pieces) but I don't know if it's possible to just get another fan.
Also I was wondering if anyone know a way that I could boot my computer without the graphic card seems the bios wont let the boot process complete if I don't have a video card plugged in. I don't have any other card I can put in there... and I need to be able to access my computer at least trough the network (Netbios + vnc is all I need for now)... I wondered if any key combination while booting could bypass this (I have an MSI-KT3Ultra2 motherboard (MS-6380E)
Any help would be really appreciated
    Thank you very much!
    Have a nice day

I think TT GIANT 2 is too big probably wont fit correctly in my case and I checked Antec website for the Vantec CCB-A1A but it doesn't says it is recommended for GF4-Ti4200 (mostly GF3 and GF4mx) , but If you say it's ok I'll believe you and try to search for it (a working fan is much better than no fan at all)
I've looked around the web site of shops near me and I found that this is the only product available
Thermal Take Cooler GF4 Highest Perf. [A1349]  (19$ can)
    http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/chipset/a1394.htm
Is this good enough or I should still search for one of the products you suggested (antec fan seems great since I won't have to mess around too much with the heatsinks)
If not I could always try to special order one of the antec fan or order it online if you know any site that have the Vantec fan and that can ship to Canada it would be appreciated. Do you have any advice of what kind of thermal paste to use when reassembling the card?
Thanks a lot your help is really appreciated

  • Gf4 Ti4200 VTD 8x macro or not?

hi there i have one question
    is in gf4 Ti4200 VTD 8x /MS-8894/ implemented macrovision in tv-out? ?(

Yes it has macrovision enabled as noted in the user's guide.  What you get is a large white box covering most of the video image.  Switching to an older capture driver (v1.08 gets rid of the box for me but introduces a mostly out of sync video (still unwatchable).  This might be fixed with the use os some sort of amplifier bewteen the player and the video card.

  • Problem w/GF4 Ti4200 vtd-8x

I had problems with my new MSI GF4 Ti4200 vtd-8x 128mb running on a 648 Max mobo. The mobo supports agp 8x but both riva tuner and display properties showed it running on agp 4x. I would really appreciate any help I can get.

Try updating both mobo and VGA card drivers.
Do clean un-installation before installing new VGA driver...

  • Ti4200-vtd 8x 128MB only 32MB????

I just purchased the 128MB version of the ti4200 vtd-8x.  However my problem is this-- I right click on the desktop- click properties- click on MSI Information Tab and Memory : 32MB / Memory Type : SDRAM
The Card is 128MB DDR! What is causing this problem? Anyone else notice this? Please advise... Thanks!

    CaLowrider,
Older Drivers on some CDs will read 32Mb when you have 128Mb.  The drivers do not hurt anything, they just read as 32Mb but you still get the full use of the 128Mb.
    Take Care,

  • TI4200-TD8X (MS-8894) Fan issues

Bought this card from Newegg April 7th, the fan just quit. Judging from the numerous posts in this forum by folks with the same problem....is this a trend?
Since I'm out of the 30 day return from Newegg, guess I have to RMA this thing through MSI.......any advice?
P.S. Not interested in buying a replacement fan for a product 2 months old...should be under warranty......or maybe I expect too much.

Lol, Sorry to hear of the misfortune but MSI will tell you just like any other Manufacturer will, "Go to the reseller first" New Egg did what they were supposed to. If your warranty with the reseller has expired then you turn to the Manufacturer and go through the process of an RMA. Anyone with a mouse should be able to find that info on the website without going to the forum.
This forum is moderated by users just like you, only we have been around for a while and have volunteered our time and get moderator priveledges, no one from MSI looks at these forums. It was and is intended for user to user help and support. Asus doesn't have that. As a matter of fact may ASUS gf3 Ti200's fan died only after a full three months of use. That stuff happens to EVERYONE, If what you see here in these forums appears to be a trend, I think that analogy may be a little skewed as this is a troubleshooting forum where people come with problems, therefore ALL you see is problems. Aside from the Media Center II nightmare and the TV AnyWhere early version.
I have two of the 4200's and no problems except having to add a little thermal paste and reattach the Cooler, that's it, these cards are rock solid. Do you have any idea how many have sold? Backordered...hmmm
If you must go elsewhere then don't forget to look to Gainward, I think they are much better over ASUS IMHO.
I would have gotten one for my last client but it didn't have all the options so I got the MSI.

  • Fan rattle

This is now the third time I've had a problem with my computer fan.  Apparently, when it gets dirty it begins to make an annoying rattle.  Brought it to Apple under warranty twice where they cleaned the fan housing.  This took care of the problem.  However, after a few months the rattle returns.  I'm no longer under warranty and I am willing to open the back of my MacBookPro and clean it myself.  I need advice on how to open the computer.  Also has anyone else experienced this problem?  If so, what did you do?

I had the same problem. The rattle/ticking just got worse over time. The only way of fixing it was to have the fan replaced by Apple whilst the Mac is still under warranty.

  • G4 Ti4200-TD8X, need to remove fan + freezing

    Hihi..
I need to remove the fan on my GFX, but I don't know how - since I can't find something which looks like a screw, only some black rubber thingies which appears to go through the fan and all the way onto the back plating.
But I want to know how to remove it.
I also have a problem with freezing up.
It appears like overheating - but after reading a few threads on this board, I'm not really sure. Also looking upon the amount of cooling within my case, I can't see how it possible can be overheating.
    My system specs are :
    ECS K7S5A ATX motherboard.
    AMD Athlon XP 2.2Ghz
    640 SD PC133 rams (Noname)
    MSI Geforce 4 ti4200 agp 8x 128DDR's (Running with agp 4x
    400Hz PSU
Thermal take Silent Viking II (80x80 Fan)
Thermal Take Technology ThermalCase MidiTower (4 80x80(Metric) Fans, two backside, two frontside)
    IRQ : (Only listing PCI)
    5. Creative AudioPCI (ES1371, ES1371) (WDM)
    5. MSI MS-Starforce GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X (NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X)
    5. Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
    5. SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
    11. Multimedia Audio Controller                           (It is disabled)
    11. SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
12 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
    Please help.
    ~x~ Janine ~x~

Well I changed my cards around abit and ended up with an IRQ setting like this :
    5. MSI MS-Starforce GeForce 4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X
    5. SIS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
    11. Creative AudioPCI
    11. Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast ethernet NIC #2
    11. SiS-900 PCI fast ethernet adapter
    12. SIS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
Now the problem within #5 - is that "SIS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller" appears to be my USB ports, which are onboard and I can't just move them around like my Netcard and soundcard - my GFX I can't move either, since I only have one AGP slot.
It still does the same freeze up however.
Also, I would really like to know how to remove the fan on the GFX, since I can't really clean it properly if I do not remove it. (It's a little dusty, and it will decrease heating if I get it cleaned properly)

  • GS60 Ghost Pro GPU fan rattle

    Hi there
I had my GS60 Ghost Pro (2E-056AU) for around 5 months now and am generally very happy with it. However, recently there has been a rattling noise coming from the GPU fan (left side) whenever the GPU is in use. Has anybody else had this problem? Is there a trick how to fix it by myself?
    Thanks for your support!

sounds like your GPU fan is defected or layer in fan is begining to wear off which means you will have to send laptop into repair and have fan exchanged to new one.

  • Qosmio X300 - One of the two fans rattles abnormally

This started about two weeks ago.
One of the two fans under the laptop rattles abnormally. If I tilt the laptop for a while the rattling stops... but it's embarassing in the very least to have to do that on such an advanced laptop.
Sometimes the rattling stops when the fan's been running a while...
So anyone else had this issue? I've got next business day on-site support but would need to take a day off work if I want them to come out so am tryin to avoid that.
Aanyone had the issue? If so how was it addressed?

right... Toshiba sent someone out today.... and guess what... Toshiba managed to mess the whole thing up!
The way support works (well my understanding of ti following the disaster today) is as follows:
    1) customer logs call with Toshiba
    2) Toshiba order parts necessary and contact a support company that is not actually a part of Toshiba, but is contracted to carry out support
    3) support company replaces parts as necessary
so, i 1) called Toshiba they told me they'd send someone over with 2 cooling fans, 2) they ordered two thermal conductors for the graphics boards (NOT FANS, JUST THE METAL PLATES!!!), 3) support guy came, when i told him what the problem was he was surprised Toshiba gave him thermal conductors and not fans. so we called Toshiba and logged a new call
i had to call Toshiba and log a new call... however, i insisted the operator note in the call records that this is the second time i am calling for the same issue as the first time they gave the poor support guy the wrong parts. now my contract only supports next business day on site visit.... as it's not practical for me to take this laptop with me to work i took a day off to be at home.....
Now that means i'll have to do it again,... so i think, hang on, Toshiba offer 24/7 on site support, so i'll ask them if, as it was their fault, they'll send someone over the weekend. "it's not within our power to do that" toshiba said "you'll have to contact the engineers company and ask them if they'll do it"... i didn't make the mistake, why should i ask?
The engineer didn't make the mistake, so why should his company have to be generous and give me a free day on site on a weekend?
Toshiba made the mistake, they should pay the engineers company to have him back on a weekend.
that is what i shall be arguing on the phone tomorrow (to Toshiba and not the engineering company) when the engineer calls up and no doubt says Toshiba are only paying for me to have a monday to friday service.
A customer should not have to worry about who Toshiba award their contracts to.
Oh, and on the matter of the fans themselves, the engineer took them out, he could find nothing inside... i tapped the fans and am very sure one of them is a lil loose although the engineer didn't think tha should be causing the level of noise he heard. however, he stood there and did hear the awful noice it was making, as if repeatedly scraping against something as the blades rushed past.
So... more updates as soon as possible... but Toshiba really screwed this one up and it's cost me a day of my annual leave... thanks Toshiba.

  • MBP fan rattle noise.

Since I last visited the site has had a revamp but I can't seem to find how to search the forum?
Anyhow I have a problem with my MBP in which I can hear the right fan making a 'rub/click' type rattle noise. It isn't very high RPM perhaps 200-300 RPM judging by per second rate.
When I hold the MBP and tilt the base to different angles the sound varies from clicks to rubs.
I've already had the left fan repaired last year and it appears the same problem is now affecting the right fan.
It sounds like a little air compressor is working and its at a barely tolerable threshold. Problem is I'm sick of taking this machine in. It's had a total of 6 repairs now and I'm pretty sick of it.
Any suggestions? And how do I search the discussions?

It does sound like the other fan's gone, my right fan went a week after the left one ...
Search is offline currently due to iPhone load, see here for more details:

  • TI4200 VTD-8X

I've got two issues one I think is a dumb question.
#1 (the dumb one) where do I get drivers?  MSI website has one current driver that says its for all MSI VGA cards?? Is that right?  Just looking at what is currently for sale there is a S**T load of cards available... only 1 driver??  I also checked out the nvidia site and the have 1 driver also... Tried the MSI Live update utility and it doesn't come back with any drivers, just a bunch of utility updates.
#2 question (serious one)  - My display has suddenly gotten very fuzzy.  I'm using a cheap 17" CRT monitor and haven't had any problems with it.  I 've tried adjusting resolutions, refresh rates, and other settings with now problems.  I did have a similar problem a couple of months ago at a different desk when I was using a cheap VGA extension cable.  Got rid of the cable got rid of the problem.  I have no such cable now.  This is what got me looking for new drivers in the first place.
Any thoughts????  TIA!!!  (BTW- thers no emoticon with me squinting my eyes trying to read my fuzzy monitor!!!)
    EDIT-  ASUS A7N8X
    MSI TI4200-VTD8X
    AMD XP2100
    512MB Corsair DDR400
80GB WD Corsair 8 MB Cache
    Monitor is a $100 17" CRT

    Thanks for the suggestions.
I think it improved a bit but its still a definite eye strainer... I can go down to 800X600 so fonts are bigger but D*mn... nothing looks right at that res!!!
I usually run at 1024X768 and thats where I'm set at now.  I really think its the monitor... I don't have a spare to try... guess I'll have to deal with it or buy glasses!!
The pocket change is going to take a while to get a 17" flat panel....  (although Frys had one for 279 or 379 this past weekend unkown brand though and honestly I haven't researched them at all so I don't know what I would look for (besides DVI!!)
Thanks again.  (BTW- Nice system ... looks almost familiar!!)

  • MSI GE60 0ND Fan rattling/grinding sound temporary fix

Don't do this if you still got warranty.
There are two way to fix this fan sound problem by either replace whole blower with new part or replace the fan bearing. I already order matching part from china. But it would take at least 2 week to ship to me. So it's time for temporary fix.
Remove the fan by remove three screw
    The part number is PAAD06015SL
Next, pry open 4 metal clip
and push the fan blade out
    Apply oil to fan bearing
The regular machine oil I used.
Reverse all step and test it out.
    Enjoy the silence.

Or couple years if you put oil every 6 month. At least this is what is on practice.
However my fan did not go out that easily when you push it.
