TiBook 1GHz Case Repair Question

I recently noticed that the bottom case of my TiBook is coming apart a bit, right where the battery is. Basically, it's like there's nothing holding that corner of the case in place. I still have AppleCare on it, for about a month more, so I asked at my "local" Apple repair center if it could be fixed. They said that there was really no way to fix it, other than gluing it. I thought that would be a poor fix, so I declined. But I after I left, I started to think: Wouldn't that be a covered repair? If the problem is that there's a cracked plastic tab that the case is supposed to snap onto, shouldn't AppleCare replace the case part with the broken tab? Of if the problem lies with the bottom case itself, say maybe it flexed out of shape, shouldn't Apple replace it? The TiBook has never been dropped or abused, so it's not a problem that resulted from anything I did to it. Has anyone ever had a problem with a TiBook case that Apple fixed under AppleCare? I'd kind of like to know if there's a precedent for this sort of thing before I resort to Superglue.

Actually what has happened is that the titanium pan (bottom case) has separated from the plastic frame that secures it t the chassis. This part is originally glued together and I assume with some special adhesive that bonds to titanium. I would return it to apple. Likely they would end up replacing the casing rather than fixing it.

  • Tibook 1ghz question

hello! I have a quick question about my powerbook. I've been having some interesting problems with it over the past few weeks, and they are really starting to bother me... now, the machine is still under applecare, but I don't have any apple stores near me, and apple seems to hide their support phone numbers, but anyway:
the screen has a few dead pixels/white spots.
the superdrive doesn't work half the time (spits disks back out, gets stuck without a disk inside, wont let me put a disk in, etc...)
battery isn't holding as well a charge as normal (won't applecare replace it?)
airport reception is spotty, fades (not my router's fault)
    machine gets REALLY hot...
normal paint flaking off because of overheating...
that's it! I'm only posting on here, because I just don't know how to get this machine in for repair, and I'm running out of time. I'm just wondering what will apple do? and how I get in contact with them. as I said before, there are no apple stores near me, so I can't bring it in, and I can't seem to find a support number... please help!!

  • TiBook 1Ghz -- Maximum internal hard drive limit?

Looking for a definitive answer to the question of hard drive capacity limitations in the TiBook --
I have the last of the mighty TiBooks -- a 1Ghz, 15". I want to replace the internal hard drive. Is there a limit to the drive capacity I can use and access in this PowerBook? Is it the 120 GB limit that affects most older Macs, or can I put a 160 GB (looking at WD Scorpio...Circuit City $79!) and be able to access the whole thing?
If anyone has the answer, has experience doing this or can point me to the KB documents, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

The Drive Compatibility Database at xlr8yourmac.com contains four reports of successful installation of 160GB drives in 1GHz Titanium Powerbooks. There are no reports of unsuccessful installations in that model. There are no reports at all of 160GB drive installations in the 867MHz Tibook, successful or otherwise. There are also no reports of 160GB drive installations in earlier Tibook models (800MHz and slower), successful or otherwise. Previous posts in the Tibook forums have reported the earlier models' inability to "see" more than 127GB of a 160GB drive, no matter how it has been formatted or prepared.
Thus, Hardy Geer's report (above) about the 1GHz Tibook is quadruply confirmed, and whether or not the simultaneously-produced 867MHz Tibook can use 160GB drives remains uncertain.
To find the four reports, I searched the database for Powerbook G4s running OS X 10.3 and 10.4 in which hard drives manufactured by Hitachi, Fujitsu, Seagate, Western Digital and Samsung, all of whom make 160GB drives, had been installed. Then I scanned all the reports that came up, to determine which PB G4 model each report concerned.
There were many more reports of successful 160GB drive installations in Aluminum PB G4s, including at least one in the original 1GHz 17" Albook introduced in January 2003 - the same time as the 867MHz 12" Albook. Though Albooks aren't my specialty, I suspect this indicates that all Albooks can use 160GB drives, and perhaps larger ones. There was only one report of the installation of Western Digital's recently-introduced 250GB IDE drive (the only one bigger than 160GB currently on the market) in a Powerbook, and that was in a late-model 1.67GHz Albook.

  • Case Escalation Question

I was informed (after 7 months of various support tickets and 2 depot center repairs) that our case would finally be escalated. I was told I would be contacted early this week. It is now Thursday, and I haven't heard a peep from Lenovo since the call that resulted in the escalation last week. When do I start to worry? Is there a seperate department I should contact regarding this? We have 9 of these laptops all with the same issue and it makes us look very incompatent to our employees that are still, after 7 months, having to use these "faulty" laptops. I have heard many a horror story about Lenovo's escalation process. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Free cases issue + question

I just watched the PC, and Steve said that we would receive free cases. He said that next week Apple would have a site up that allowed you to choose which case you wanted to get for free. Bumpers aren't the only ones that are being given away. There will be some other cases from other brands that will be available. This is due to the factory not being able to produce the bumpers quickly enough.
Hope that clears up some questions.
Here's a question of my own. Will we be able to input, say, an order number and be able to register for a case and have them send the case together with the phone or will we have to register after the phone is sent?

Thanks for the info!! The cheap (|) case I have does not work very well as it
comes off every time, but it works great as I haven't had too many dropped calls. Funny thing is most of my dropped calls is because I am in part of a crappy area for AT&T.

  • Disk repair questions- God, I hope I don't lose another drive.

Having lost a hard drive over the summer, I'm at least better backed up. I tend to run Disk Utility, and on my less that six month old new drive it says:
    +Checking volume bitmap.+
+Volume Bit Map needs minor repair+
    +Checking volume information.+
+The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.+
+Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit+
    +1 HFS volume checked+
    + Volume needs repair+
And that's just about what it said before my last drive hit the crapper. So following Mac protocol I accessed Disk Utility from my Tiger startup disc and tried to have it repair whatever is wrong, and it tells me that it could not. The computer is running absolutely fine. But I'm understandably worried.
So shall I proceed to Disk Warrior? Is there another strategy I can use here? Is my neck in a noose here or what? Or am I panicking?
    (I don't think I'm panicking.)
    Thanks!

Use that OPTION key to temporarily change boot volumes. Sometimes it doesn't work right with Leopard and older drives formatted pre-10.4.4.
Why?? HFS+ has bugs. Memory writes an error. Corrupt cache files.
I would buy another disk drive, 500GB goes for $109 now and are a nice size and good. But I'm reluctant about FW and ATA drives. SATA and you have a drive you can place internal or in ext SATA case.
Leo has enough issues with I/O that I would only use it for testing and evaluation. Yes, it is 'stable' but that means little if applications aren't ready, if there are bugs, if it can wipe out a partition.
I may have had Vista freeze once in the last year, which gets used 90% for the last six months (before that, there were some "MIA" 64-bit drivers). (NTFS was updated and seems pretty good to me, but new territory. knock on wood, but no directory error in a year)
As long as the FW drive has "partition type: GUID" listed in DU it will boot.
OWC has $68 for dual drive SATA case, $25 for NewerTech cable and PCI slot to connect the two spare SATA ODD ports. Those, to me, come as essential before 10.5 which you don't want to be without spare backups, and 10.5 will be around for two years probably and go through a lot of updates (once every 3-4 months).
There is no reason why we should NEED Disk Warrior if everything really worked as it should. Everything.
Leopard Cache Cleaner and learn to use FSCK (Single User Mode) should do what Disk Warrior does and for only $9.

  • Need Help on using Forge Config Manager and CAS. Questions listed in the content below

    Hi All,
I have an existing Endeca pipeline implementation where we read the data sets (Product Catalog Information) from Oracle database using JDBC adapters. The data set undergoes a series of manipulation until it gets indexed to the Endeca system. We make use of PCI for dimensions and dimension values. However, we now want to extend PCI to also include the Product catalog information. The current implementation also does not make use of CAS adapters to consume the dimensions data in PCI. The next consideration is to implement PCI as close to Out of the Box provisions and standardize it. Therefore we are also considering to implement CAS.
    The questions are as below:
    1. What are the ideal parameters that should support the use of PCI implementation (Dataset + dimension + precedence Rules + schema information) ? Note: We DO NOT have any product catalog system (like ATG) between database and Endeca.
    2. Considering that we do not have any product catalog system to organize and maintain data, how feasible is it to read directly from database through CAS Adapters and process the data ?
    3. We also plan to introduce partial update pipeline in future releases. Keeping that in mind should CAS based approach help us to read from a record store at the time of partial updates ?
4.in case we are limiting to a business case of implementing partial updates in the above explained existing design, should a custom CAS approach be a better design ? Custom CAS approach = writing the baseline output data to record store and later referring it at the time of partial updates.
    5. Will CAS based approach help to reduce the baseline timings ?
    6. What is the best way to export data to record store instance in the above design ? (Record store API / Command line utility / CAS crawl)
    Thanks,
    Nitin

    Hi Neeraj,
You cam use both PI SLD and Solman Local SLD for LMDB synchronization. Now here you make to make sure that correct ranks are assigned to PI and Solman SLD. With the help of multiple sld, you can remove the cause of concern. Local SLD should always be of solman.

  • Macbook air hinge repair question please respond!!!!

Hey everyone, I have a question that hopefully someone can answer I've never sent anything into apple repair so don't know if they're a pain. Anyway in 2008 I bought a macbook air off of a guy I knew, he informed me there was a flaw which was the bottom right hand side of the bezel looked like bent a little toward the user, the computer worked fine and I love it! Anyway after like 8 months I opened it up and the left hinge thing cracked and this little piece came off??? I walked into an apple store while travelling without the air and talked to a genius he said its a common defect and they would fix it. I called tech support told. My story including the bezel thing and they said they would fix it.. should I be worried they will get it see the bezel and say well fix the hinge only somehow? What do you guys think? They can't be as liberal as dell who. Will repair anything...I mean I suppose once they get it they'll have to replace the bezel anyway because it seems to go together. The computer and hinge work 100% but. Would be sweet if repaired.. any thoughts? Sry for typing I'm on my mobile. O and I bought the air for 1000 still loving it..

I would suggest sending it in. I believe they will replace everything. They replaced parts on my MacBook once that I didn't think need replacing. Also, about six months ago, one fan went out in my current MacBook Pro. I called Apple on a Friday. Monday morning FedEx brought a box. The gal helped me pack it quick and she took it along back with her right away. Wednesday morning at 9:10AM she was back with it. Apple had replaced BOTH fans in it.

  • Dropped iPod case repair

My iPod decidet to get out of my pocket(breast pocket!:O) when i was jumping and hit the ground(gravity's fault! :D). It was a hard punch but it's still working. I've also got picture of it: http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/6029/img6793yc5.jpg
Bought it 1 month ago, and it's kind of anoyeing that it looks like that. You know that allkind of dust can get into my iPod from that crack there! :P Also know that warrant won't repair or do anything with it. I was intrested that is it possible to change that metal cover back there? I tryed to phush it to the right place but it won't stay there, where i want to.
A day after drop(today :P) bought new protective case for my iPod.
Actually there were 2 other things i like to mention(maybe it "has to be" like this).
    1.Harddisk makes weird nose(not spinning sound)when i start a vide or songs
    2.I can see backlight gleam where i shouldn't. It's about half cm from screen(it's 1/5" i guess :o))
Well... "things" happen. xD I still like Apple poducts!
PC   Windows XP Pro   512ram, p4 3ghz ht

To possibly help with your dust problem, because you are right you could definitely get things in there that shouldn't be in there. If you go to like a Target, Radio Shack basically anywhere that sells iPods and iPod equipment buy yourself a nice iPod case. The brand case I have is called "incase" its like a stretchy kinda nylon feeling case with a nice spin wheel cover, that might help keep dust out of it. If you search around there are lots of different kinds of cases out there you could get to put it in. As for replacing the metal cover, I don't know anything about that subject. Your hard drive making a weird noise could be from dropping it. Same with the backlight gleam.

  • Mail-In Repair Question

ok...so Ive decided to send in my Macbook for a simple repair before my warranty expires. Its a pretty common issue it seems. My left command key got popped off by my nephew, after sticking it back on it works 90 percent of the time, but will come back off sometimes and it sticks, which ***** since i use keyboard shortcuts alot more than my mouse! SO HERE IS THE QUESTION
I use the macbook ALOT for everyday designing/printing....so for a minor key change that they will do, waht do yall think the estimated time to get my computer back? I received the packaging materials from apple today after i started the repair claim earlier this week. It came with a shipping label to send it to them which is Priority Overnight FedEx, so it will ship quick, but didnt know if anyone had experience with the same or similar issues?
the label is shipping from Dothan, AL (me) to Memphis...just wondering cause i wont be able to work w/o the computer
    Thanks

    Hi mac100percent,
I wouldn't ship it out on Friday, as the repair depot does not receive packages on the weekends. If you ship it out on Friday they won't receive the unit until Monday and that's when the clock starts. I've yet to see an issue that was so complex where the depot had the machine for more than 36 hours. A possible timeline scenario:
    1.) Ship package on Monday
2.) Package is received Tuesday, work performed, diagnostics performed
3.) Package may ship right back on Tuesday for Wednesday delivery... if not
4.) Package ships Wednesday for Thursday delivery
On a side note, it's impossible to predict any handling issues with package while it's in Fedex's possession. But from a turn around at the service depot, they're usually very quick. I worked in Apple's call center for a while and I can count on one hand how many times I saw a machine sit there for longer than 36 hours (that wasn't a billing/payment/return address issue).

  • Lower and upper case repair

I have a macbook air. It felt down from my hand on its corner and has damaged. The up-left corner is chamfered like 0.5 cm on both lower and upper cases. I would like to know what can I do to repair its body since there is not any software problem with it. Does apple fix it and if yes, how much does it cost.
    Thank you.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Yes, Apple can repair. You'll have to take it to the Apple store to find out the cost, and you should probably be sitting down when they tell you the cost.

  • Repair Questions on a 2006 Mac Pro

Hi everyone, i currently have a dead mac pro 2006 edition with 2 dual core xeon. I left at the mac repair shop, they gotta find out whats wrong with it. I fear its the logic board. So i was wondering:
    1. Will a recent year logic board fit in a 2006 mac pro case? if yes, do i need to change other hardwares too? daughter board etc. Cause I searched online and found out that the new boards cost alot less to replace than old ones.
    2. If indeed i can change the logic board to a newer one. Can i still put my old xeon processor in there?
    3. Thanks guys.

    1. I've just got a new Mac Pro and it is quite different internally compared to my 2006 Mac Pro.
The HDD carriers are different sized, I had expected to slide out the drives and put them straight in the new machine but no luck.
The processor shelf is also a completely different design too.
    2. No
    3. Sorry to bring you the bad news. Hope you get your machine fixed and it isn't too ££££

  • JPEG recovery/repair question after upgrading to Mac Pro

Hi, first time posting here, so hopefully this is in the right area. Bear with me if this seems long-winded.
I've been searching the discussion board for an answer on how to repair .jpegs, but I haven't come up with anything, so hopefully some of you long time users can help.
My old G4 MDD tower recently died after seven years of faithful service, so I recently purchased a Mac Pro 2.66GHz Quad-Core to replace it. I've been attempting to recover the old drive from the G4 to get my data, which hasn't gone so well. It's a 400GB drive, but the recovery programs only recognize it as 128GB. Anyway, I've been able to get my image files off, but when I try to open them in Photoshop, Preview, or iPhoto, I get an error that states
"Could not complete your request because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be trncated or incomplete)."
I've seen various PC programs that can repair files like this, but I haven't come across any Mac programs that can. Can anyone give me any tips that may allow me to open these in Photoshop while ignoring this issue or another Mac program that can fix the problem for me?

I see a few related things reading through the various posts.
"Could not complete your request because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete)."
It's a 400GB drive, but the recovery programs only recognize it as 128GB.
I've been using an external case for the drive which only has USB output.
It's unlikely you could put the old drive directly into the Mac Pro since it would require an SATA connection. Coming from an MDD G4, it would be an EIDE drive. An external case is your only option, which you've done.
But about that case. That is likely why your system is only seeing it as a 128 GB drive. There may be a jumper setting on the drive, or on the bridgeboard within the external housing you need to change that will allow you to access the entire drive. If not, you'll have to invest in a newer case that will let you see the entire 400 GB. But if other programs are seeing the entire 400 GB, then it's a problem with that recovery program.
For the truncated message from Photoshop, that indicates the file was cut off. While the software you were using did find the file header, it couldn't recover the entire image because of the possibility those sectors ran into the area beyond the 128 GB point. Each image has as part of its header how many bytes the file is comprised of. What Photoshop is telling you is that it expected more data according to the header information, but there wasn't any more.
If all ways you try to view the drive only see 128 GB, then I think the first thing you need to do is move the drive to a new case, then try recovery again.

  • PC 2.5: Delete cases/survey questions

    Hi all,
In order to test some functionalities of PC I scheduled some surveys a few month ago.
I'm trying to delete all the questions, surveys and cases that I have created.
I tried to use program RHRHDL00 but I didn't find these attributes as parameters.
Note: i have customized lots of master data that i don't want to loose.
    Any idea?
    Best regards,
    Julien

    Julien,
I assume you are talking about a dev or QA system.  It is my understanding you can't delete a question if it is in a survey and you can delete a survey if it has been used (a key control for audit purposes).  That said you could go into the IMG under administration programs and "Execute Administration programs for PC workflows" and go into 'delete cases and workflows".  You should be able to find whatever you want to delete in here and in theory you should be able to delete subsequent objects.  I haven't done this so I'm not exactly sure if it will work.  You will have to delete everything for each survey.  Depending on your environment, this could be a very difficult task.
Personally, I would just mark the survey(s) and/or questions inactive and just forget about them.  There are so many interdependencies on the backend that performing these types of changes might turn out to cause more trouble than they are worth.  You could quickly find that other, unanticipated things go "sideways" after making manual backend workflow/case changes (like performing signoff).
    Matt
