Tibook 1ghz question

hello! I have a quick question about my powerbook. I've been having some interesting problems with it over the past few weeks, and they are really starting to bother me... now, the machine is still under applecare, but I don't have any apple stores near me, and apple seems to hide their support phone numbers, but anyway:
the screen has a few dead pixels/white spots.
the superdrive doesn't work half the time (spits disks back out, gets stuck without a disk inside, wont let me put a disk in, etc...)
battery isn't holding as well a charge as normal (won't applecare replace it?)
airport reception is spotty, fades (not my router's fault)
machine gets REALLY hot...
normal paint flaking off because of overheating...
that's it! I'm only posting on here, because I just don't know how to get this machine in for repair, and I'm running out of time. I'm just wondering what will apple do? and how I get in contact with them. as I said before, there are no apple stores near me, so I can't bring it in, and I can't seem to find a support number... please help!!
Ryan

  • TiBook 1GHz Case Repair Question

I recently noticed that the bottom case of my TiBook is coming apart a bit, right where the battery is. Basically, it's like there's nothing holding that corner of the case in place. I still have AppleCare on it, for about a month more, so I asked at my "local" Apple repair center if it could be fixed. They said that there was really no way to fix it, other than gluing it. I thought that would be a poor fix, so I declined. But I after I left, I started to think: Wouldn't that be a covered repair? If the problem is that there's a cracked plastic tab that the case is supposed to snap onto, shouldn't AppleCare replace the case part with the broken tab? Of if the problem lies with the bottom case itself, say maybe it flexed out of shape, shouldn't Apple replace it? The TiBook has never been dropped or abused, so it's not a problem that resulted from anything I did to it. Has anyone ever had a problem with a TiBook case that Apple fixed under AppleCare? I'd kind of like to know if there's a precedent for this sort of thing before I resort to Superglue.

Actually what has happened is that the titanium pan (bottom case) has separated from the plastic frame that secures it t the chassis. This part is originally glued together and I assume with some special adhesive that bonds to titanium. I would return it to apple. Likely they would end up replacing the casing rather than fixing it.

  • TiBook 1Ghz -- Maximum internal hard drive limit?

Looking for a definitive answer to the question of hard drive capacity limitations in the TiBook --
I have the last of the mighty TiBooks -- a 1Ghz, 15". I want to replace the internal hard drive. Is there a limit to the drive capacity I can use and access in this PowerBook? Is it the 120 GB limit that affects most older Macs, or can I put a 160 GB (looking at WD Scorpio...Circuit City $79!) and be able to access the whole thing?
If anyone has the answer, has experience doing this or can point me to the KB documents, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

The Drive Compatibility Database at xlr8yourmac.com contains four reports of successful installation of 160GB drives in 1GHz Titanium Powerbooks. There are no reports of unsuccessful installations in that model. There are no reports at all of 160GB drive installations in the 867MHz Tibook, successful or otherwise. There are also no reports of 160GB drive installations in earlier Tibook models (800MHz and slower), successful or otherwise. Previous posts in the Tibook forums have reported the earlier models' inability to "see" more than 127GB of a 160GB drive, no matter how it has been formatted or prepared.
Thus, Hardy Geer's report (above) about the 1GHz Tibook is quadruply confirmed, and whether or not the simultaneously-produced 867MHz Tibook can use 160GB drives remains uncertain.
To find the four reports, I searched the database for Powerbook G4s running OS X 10.3 and 10.4 in which hard drives manufactured by Hitachi, Fujitsu, Seagate, Western Digital and Samsung, all of whom make 160GB drives, had been installed. Then I scanned all the reports that came up, to determine which PB G4 model each report concerned.
There were many more reports of successful 160GB drive installations in Aluminum PB G4s, including at least one in the original 1GHz 17" Albook introduced in January 2003 - the same time as the 867MHz 12" Albook. Though Albooks aren't my specialty, I suspect this indicates that all Albooks can use 160GB drives, and perhaps larger ones. There was only one report of the installation of Western Digital's recently-introduced 250GB IDE drive (the only one bigger than 160GB currently on the market) in a Powerbook, and that was in a late-model 1.67GHz Albook.

  • 1Ghz TiBook - Random freezing. Logic board fault?

    Hi all,
perhaps one of you might be able to help troubleshoot this, because it's seriously driving me up the wall! I bought a used 1Ghz Titanium (DVI) recently and I'm finding that it freezes randomly when in use, requiring a comand+control restart. I've almost always experienced it in Safari, but also once in Entourage, illustrator and also in MacOS 9.2.2 Finder. Essentially what happens is that the cursor freezes and the powerbook no longer responds to keystrokes or trackpad input. I've tried an external mouse but that doesn't fix things either. The display is still lit but any moving graphics/video are frozen on screen. If music is playing in iTunes it cuts out leaving the last second of sound looping. Shortly after freezing I sometimes hear the fan come on, so perhaps there is a part of the powerbook still working after the crash (?). Also, I can select/deselect the caps lock and number lock keys and the green LEDs switch on and off, so perhaps it's not completely dead? The moment of the freeze almost always coincides with a mouse/trackpad click on the scroll bar, menu, safari menu bar, dock icon, form submit button, etc. It will on occasion freeze overnight when there is no mousing at all. generally though I can leave it playing iTunes all night and when I start using it in the morning it'll freeze when I collect my email or something.
the frequency of the freezing is semi-random; I have gone for roughly 48hrs of constant use without incident and then suddenly 2-4 crashes in short succession (ie, within about 10 mins of each other). Generally it freezes about 2 or 3 times a day. They do often come regular clumps.
Initially I thought it was Safari, or the OSX 10.4.5 installation that came with the powerbook, but I removed the entire HD and replaced it with the working drive from my Pismo and had exactly the same symptoms. Realising it was hardware related I did the usual drill of swapping, re-seating and removing ram, etc - but no dice. I've run Apple Hardware Test in a couple of 18hr loops but they return a glowing report about my hardware! techtool does likewise. I took it to the new Apple Centre in London where they ran their (apparently more powerful) AHT CD for 73 loops over 3 hours. Again, no reported errors!
I've read the long 'trackpad cable thread', and opened my powerbook to see if pinching the cable is an issue, but it's clearly not. I have lots of clearance around my trackpad cable and it's not in contact with any part of the case. I've even applied pressure all around the palmrest and the outside of my powerbook case hoping to induce a freeze but that doesn't seem to do anything.
What should I do next? when the powerbook works it's fine, but I'm at a loss as to what's causing the freezing. As a performing musician playing to hundreds of people a fault like this renders my powerbook useless since it must be absolutely stable and bullet-proof on stage.
thanks for reading and I'm grateful for any advice.
    TiBook 1Ghz (DVI)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   9600/350

    hi there,
thanks for the welcome. i've been visiting here for a while and find all the posts very useful.
the trackpad issue is an odd one; my powerbook doesn't seem to show the classic symptoms of weird startup chimes or jerky cursor movement, etc in the other thread. I nonetheless opened up the powerbook praying that I'd find a pinched cable since that would have been so easy to fix. unfortunately there's nothing about it that looks problematic.
I had also suspected heat as being an issue and searched this forum a couple of times for related posts, but couldn't find anything. When I opened the powerbook i checked the fans for obstructions and blew out any dust i could see (i didn't have compressed gas). Again, they looked fairly normal to me - i didn't spot anything obvious like a trapped cable. As far as I can tell all 3 fans come on OK. First one of them and then after some time another one or two turn on after the powerbook has been running a while. (Is it actually possible to determine whether or not they're all working?)
It's difficult to say whether heat is actually related to the freezing. certainly I often notice the fans come on before a freeze, or right afterwards, but just as many times that's not the case. what is consistant however is that the freeze occurs the instance a cursor selection is clicked.
would you say this would be resolved by a logic board swap, because I know someone selling one. On the other hand, I'm a little confused by all the error-free reports I get when I run the Apple Hardware Test for extened loops.
    thanks again for your help!

  • TiBook battery reporting wrong information

I recently got a TiBook 1GHz, and of course it being used, there was no guarantee on the battery life. I was also given a third party 45W charger, so I wasn't expecting anything spectacular. I loaded Tiger on it, left it to charge overnight, and unplugged it and pulled it out in the morning to start loading some newer browsers and other software. But then it tells me that with my backlight low and on battery saving mode, It will last 7 hours. And then it started draining as to back it up. The percentage was going down slowly, the estimated time was dropping like it should, and I was about to wonder what kind of battery this was.
Then the inevitable happened, and it went into the dead battery standby. Clicking the button on the battery anytime right up till it 'dies' reports what the OS sees, so at 75% its got 3 lights, and at 50 or so, its got two. But then when it dies, it goes straight to a single flashing light.
I've already tried resetting the PMU, resetting the PRAM, and doing the normal battery meter reset (as far as I know it), but it still reports a false reading.
The guy I bought it from claimed ~4 hours on the battery. And that's about what I get, with standby times and moments of high usage taken into consideration. And the reported time ticks away correctly. After the meter reset, it told me 7 hours. when it died, it said 3 hours. But I kinda need to know a more acurate reading for when I start using it more often.
IIRC, the meter reset is charge it up fully, discharge it by using it, let it standby when the battery 'dies', and then charge it up again. It should then be reset and more acurate. But, do I need to have the computer on and active during the charge, discharge, and second charge stages? can I let it go to sleep? Will a 65W charger fix this problem? Or is my battery just dead? I can't afford a new battery just yet, but what's the opinion on the best brand?
EDIT: I just grabbed a utility called coconutBattery and ran it, and I'm thinking the battery may be a bit too far gone...
It says the Original battery capacity was 4200mAh. But its reporting that the current capacity is somewhere in the 7000mAh range. What on earth could that mean? I don't think the battery has been rebuilt or anything (it certianly doesn't look like it). But Its giving me some pretty bad readings in OS X Tiger. The computer came loaded with OS X Leopard and was running slow as molasses...Could the OS switch have changed anything?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Okay, after messing with it some more, I've got a better understanding of what this thing is doing.
The original claim by the seller was ~4hrs of battery life. When I put it in the machine, fully charged, Tiger reports it as almost 9 hours of life in full power save (low backlight, no airport, hard disk off, battery saving power mode). The percentage and time tick down like they should. Right up until ~75%. It goes to sleep, and cannot wake up until power is plugged in. When power is plugged in, it now claims the  battery is at 0% and will take about 5 hours to charge.
2 hours later, its fully charged, and still claiming that high life time.
I looked in the system profiler, and its saying that a full charge on the  battery is 7539 mAh. The battery only held 4200 when new. This battery also only has 102 cycles on it. If you subtract 4200 from 7539, you get 3339, which when I take into consideration that it lasts about 2-3 hours with normal usage, that seems about right. But the system is miscalculating EVERYTHING because the battery reports itself as its original capacity PLUS its actual capacity, so when the battery stops charging, it assumes that instead of 3339 (which it should report to the system right up untill the battery clicks to 100%), it should be at 7539, and then it skews the whole thing.
I have it charged to only 15% after it went to standby, and its reporting the time and percentage fine, but as soon as I try and load a full charge, the time and percentage will skew again.
I've tried everything again to see if I can fix it up, but nothing seems to work...
I'm about to load Panther on another partition. See if maybe its a software problem...But I'm thinking its just the battery's 'fuel gauge' isn't working right.
This is just a really odd case, but I've had a similar experience with a 12" G4. Its battery was much more used, but would say it could hold 3 hours, but just after an hour elapsed, it would quickly reallign and tell me that I only had a few minutes left. I didn't think to check capacities and whatnot back then, mostly because it was a job to see if I could even get the computer to work after someone had pulled the screen out of it.

  • HARD DRIVE ICON MISSING IN ACTION

I have been unable to locate a solution to my current problem. Recently I was attempting to use the disc utility application to erase an external 160GB Maxtor drive and accidentally erased on of my existing internal HD icons from my desktop. I am now unable to find or access the "missing" HD anywhere. However, I do have use of the other HD which uses the Jaguary 10.3.9 OS.
Basically the "missing" drive was initially a clone of main drive as was programmed by Apple when I purchased back in 2004. However, I had upgraded to Mac OS X Tiger along with Final Cut Studio and the included applications of Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Compressor, and DVD Studio Pro. Thankfully, I did not have any saved projects, music or documents that I would need to worry about recovering. Also, I should have all of the install application discs at home as I would assume that I will need to use them at some point. If possible, in attempting to correct this problem I would rather not jeopardize the info that is on the remaining "good" drive. Do you have any suggestions regarding starting from scratch on the "bad" hard drive? Obviously, I am a "rookie" at this but I would appreciate any assistance that you may have to offer in order to get this hard drive back to the point that it was at prior to my big "mistake"!!!
The drives are both internal as shown by info from my System Profiler that I've copied/pasted below:
    ATA Bus:

The high-lighted portion is the problem drive and as far as I can tell does not indicate the drive specifically by name in the way the other drive does (MACINTOSH HD). I believe the problem happend while I was attempting to use Disk Utility to erase an external 160GB Maxtor drive by zeroing all data on this drive. However, I inadvertantly selected an internal Maxtor drive by mistake and almost immediately the internal HD Icon disappeared from my desktop. Also, I definitely ejected/unmounted the external drive in the proper manner. Finally, I have never opened my tower to service the G5 so I wouldn't think that there would be a loose or unseated connection. I have not yet tried to boot the Mac to my Tiger installer disc or use the version of Disk Utility on that disc to reformat the drive. Assuming that I start this process and the missing drive does appear in this version, would you be able to either provide or otherwise direct me with a step-by-step guide (the dummy version) as I will admit that I am not the most computer literate person in the world? Also, what might my next step be if the missing drive does not appear in the Tiger version of Disk Utility?
Thank you in advance for any help or guidance you may have to offer! I also appreciate your taking time out of your day to try and solve this issue.
    Johnny
    Thanks again!

Here's the answer to this question as provided by EWW in another Discussion Forum from mid-September 2007.
Re: HD ICON DISAPPEARED FROM BOTH DESKTOP & DISK UTILITY
Okay, so you have two identical 250GB Maxtor internal drives, and both drive mechanisms are recognized by System Profiler — but the second one now has no volume(s) on it. The first one contains a single volume called Macintosh HD, about which some information is reported under its name. It appears that both drives are connected satisfactorily to the logic board, so cabling and connections aren't at fault. The external drive isn't involved either, and if it's still connected I suggest disconnecting it before doing anything further, just so it won't get mixed up in the fray.
A volume is not the drive itself; it's a data storage structure on the drive that you create and name when you format and partition the drive. There can be just one volume on a drive, or more than one. If you create two or more partitions, each partition is a volume, and appears as a separate disk icon on the desktop after formatting is done.
In the left panel of Tiger's Disk Utility, what I hope you see is two different Maxtor drive mechanisms listed on separate lines (manufacturer's name and product number appears in these lines) and indented under one of them, the volume called Macintosh HD. There is probably nothing under the other drive mechanism. Select that mechanism. Check its S.M.A.R.T. status near the bottom of the DU window. Is it "Verified"?
If so, these frequently-posted instructions from Discussions regular Cornelius should enable you to format the disk again and get it mounted on the desktop for use. Then you'll have to reinstall whatever you need on it.

Text encoding is set to automatic. Is there anything I'm missing? This doen't seem to be an Ebay problem since when I go to my webmail account the HTML message views fine there. This has been very frustrating for me as I use ebay a fair amount.

  • Adding keywords to ref'd images while ext HDD disconnected?

I have looked for an answer to this issue in the documentation as well as searching this forum (and others), but cannot find a succinct answer. Here's the question:
I have original image files on an external 500GB drive hooked to my MacBook (2GB RAM, 10.4.8). I started usoing Aperture, which i do like a lot (now that I can have external storage for the files).
The question is: if I take the MacBook on the road without the 500GB drive, can I work on keywords and other metadata? COmmon sense tells me yes, but the manual speaks of not being able to work on images whie referenced originals are "disconnected". Before I start a pile o' work, i just want to be sure I can add keywords and such while travelling with the MacBook.

You can edit metadata including keywords, version names, picks in stacks etc.
What you can't do is any kind of visual editing such as cropping or other adjustments, and you can't export anything.

  • Master Image in Library Cannot be  Found

I have a large number of NEF files in my library which, since I upgraded to 1.5, now show a gray thumbnail with a red question mark and the "Referenced Image's Master File Has Not Been Found" badge. Most of the files in the library display properly. Rebuilding the library did not solve this problem.
If I inspect the library package contents and search for one of the files that cannot be found, Spotlight finds it immediately. It is in the library, right where it is supposed to be. Finder shows me the file and the proper icon preview and the file does not appear to be damaged.
I cannot use Aperture to relocate one of these master files or manipulate it in any way. I could, of course, simply drag the offending images one by one out of the library using finder, but there are several thousand of them in there. I cannot use Spotlight to simply find all the NEF images and drag them out of the library because Aperture's library stores all the images in numerous subfolders and Finder requires all the files to be in the same folder for an operation like that.

I've no idea what's causing the problem, but Spotlight certainly CAN work like that.
    1) Open the Library package.
    2) Do your Spotlight search for ".nef".
    3) Select all the images (still in the Spotlight window).
    4) Drag to new location.
But BEFORE doing that, I'd select one of the images in Aperture and use File>Manage Referenced Files... to find out where Aperture thinks the file is located.

  • Powermac G4 will not boot from CD with OS10 install BUT will boot with OS 9

I have a Powermac G4 which had been running OS 10.38 or 39. The system on start up would sound the tones, the grey screen with Apple logo displays and the rotating clock at the bottom of the screen ultimately freezes and nothing more happens.
I presume that the hard drive is either smoked or corrupted so I buy a replacement drive and Tiger, and go through the following steps:
I disconnect the old drive and try to boot my g4 with Tiger install disks. The start up freezes in the same way as with old disk.
I find my old Panther install disks and the system freezes in the same way.
I then use my 9.2 install disk and the system boots and I get cannot see my new drive.
I disconnect my new drive, reconnect my old drive and re-boot with 9.2 and find my old drive mounts. Big Smile but...
    here is the question:
Since I apparently have a still functional drive, why won't my install CD for Panther or DVD for Tiger not boot this system???? I do have a panasonic DVD/CD writer which is aftermarket if that might be the issue. If so would re-installing the apple CD player make a difference?
(I have also zapped the PRAM)
I am on the way out to try and find a copy of disk warrior to try and salvage my old drive. All help would be appreciated.

I had a really weird problem that might be something like you're experiencing. I was trying to get Tiger onto a "Yikes" PCI G4, and it would not boot up with the Tiger disk.I did everything I could come up with, and no luck. I spent a good bit of time here and over at macosx.com, and no one could figure it out. I finally just re-installed 10.2.8 on a partition, and for some unknown reason, the computer booted with the Tiger disk, and I was able to install. I let the people on the boards know it, but didn't go back to tell them what happened the next day. When I tried to restart, it would only boot into OS9. If I tried to force Tiger (like by choosing it as start-up) it would go to a black screen. Anyway, it ended up no go. If you'd like to go through all the things I did, here's the link to that thread:

I would still like to know if there's some reason some "Yikes" models just can't deal with Tiger.

  • Advice for Soon-to-be MacPro Owner. Need Recs for Best Practices...

I'll be getting a Quad Core 3 Ghz with 1GB of RAM, a 250Gig HD, the ATI X1900 card. It will be my first mac after five years (replacing a well-used G4 Tibook 1Ghz).
First the pressing questions: Thanks to the advice of many on this board, I'll be buying 4GB of RAM from Crucial (and upgrading the HD down the road when needs warrant).
    1) Am I able to add the new RAM with the 1G that the system comes with? Or will they be incompatible, requiring me to uninstall the shipped RAM?
Another HUGE issue I've been struggling with is whether or not to batch migrate the entire MacPro with everything that's on my TiBook. I have so many legacy apps, fonts that I probably don't use any more and probably have contributed to intermittent crashes and performance issues. I'm leaning towards fresh installs of my most crucial apps: photoshop w/ plugins, lightroom, firefox with extensions and just slowly and systematically re-installing software as the need arises.
Apart from that...I'd like to get a consensus as to new system best practices. What should I be doing/buying to ensure and establish a clean, maintenance-lite, high-performance running machine?

I believe you will end up with 2x512mb ram from the Apple store. If you want to add 4gb more you'll want to get 4x1gb ram sticks. 5gb ram is never an "optimal" amount but people talk like it's bad or something but it's simply that the last gig of ram isn't accessed quite as fast. You'll want to change the placement so the 4x1 sticks are "first" and will be all paired up nicely so your other two 512 sticks only get accessed when needed. A little searching here will turn up explanations for how best to populate the ram for your situation. It's still better to have 5 gigs where the 5th gig of ram isn't quite as fast than 4. They will not be incompatible but you WILL want to uninstall the original RAM, then put in the 4gigs into the optimal slots then add the other two 512 chips.
Do fresh installs. Absolutely. Then only add those fonts that you really need. If you use a ton of fonts I'd get some font checking app that will verify them.
I don't use RAID for my home machine. I use 4 internal 500gig drives. One is my boot, the other is my data (although it is now full and I'll be adding a pair of external FW). Each HD has a mirror backup drive. I use SuperDuper to create a clone of my Boot drive only after a period of a week or two of rock solid performance following any system update. Then I don't touch it till another update or installation of an app followed by a few weeks of solid performance with all of my critical apps. That allows me to update quicktime or a security update without concern...because some of those updates really cause havoc with people. If I have a problem (and it has happened) I just boot from my other drive and clone that known-good drive back to the other. I also backup my data drive "manually" with Superduper.
You will get higher performance with Raid of course, but doing that requires three drives (two for performance and one for backup) just for data-scratch, as well as two more for boot and backup of boot. Some folks can fit all their boot and data on one drive but photoshop and many other apps (FCP) really prefer data to be on a separate disk. My setup isn't the absolute fastest, but for me it's a very solid, low maintenance, good performing setup.

  • Send attachment via thunderbird?

I would like to write a little script that i can call from the command line like this: './myscript file' , such that it would open a "compose window" in thunderbird and automatically attach the 'file' to that new email.
    Is that possible?
Thanks a lot for any hints, suggestions, pointers, etc.
    Best regards,
    Gabriel.
    PS:
I should add that, although i am fluent in C++, bash, and a number of other languages, i have very little experience with Applescript.

Reasons 1 & 2 are equally applicable to MS Entourage and Apple Mail, Gabriel. And both are highly scriptable to do what you want.
Along the lines of your question, even without scripting, in Entourage (and I think in Mail, too) dragging a file icon onto the dock icon of the application will cause the application to open and produce a new outgoing message with the file already attached. Both applications offer the address completion feature.

  • Installing Classic on PBG4

I've read through several threads on this topic, but I'm adding a new twist:
The backstory is that my TiBook (1GhZ) originally shipped with OS X 10.2.something. After 10.3 was released, I updated to that using discs licensed to the university I was with at the time (I do not have copies of those discs). Not long ago, my hard drive died and was replaced. I then reinstalled 10.3 using store-bought installation discs, which do not include an OS 9 installer.
The question is: what is the best way to get Classic back on my TiBook? I haven't tried using my original 10.2 discs because they are off in storage somewhere, but is it possible to use the Restore CD that originally came with the machine?
As an aside, since I'm a couple thousand miles away from where the 10.2 discs are stored, and there's some work I need to do that requires Classic, I tried installing from a friend's store-bought 9.2.1 installer disk (grey with white text) until I could get my hands on them. There is some debate (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=660008&tstart=15) as to whether 9.2 can be installed on a TiBook in this way. I was unable to boot from the disc - I got an error message (number 11, FWIW) saying that I needed to make sure all extensions were turned off, which pretty much just confused me.
So, are the 10.2 discs my only hope? Or is there another solution out there?
    1GhZ PowerBook Ti   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi, Kevin -
So, are the 10.2 discs my only hope?
Yes, if you want a full functioning install of OS 9 (Classic).
Your G4 PB 1.0GHz model is the last PB model capable of booting to OS 9; it needs the model-specific version of OS 9.2.2 that came with it, installable from its original disks, if you want a bootable OS 9. It can not use an OS 9.2.1 Install CD for installing purposes.
These articles can help in re-installing OS 9 (Classic) from your original disks -
Article #61802 - How to restore your Apple software
Article #106294 - Mac OS X: How to reinstall Mac OS 9
Article #60847 - How to Perform a Multiple Disc Restoration
Article #107383 - Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3: How to perform Mac OS 9 clean installation with Restore CDs
Article #42929 - Using Restore Discs with Mac OS X 10.2 or later
If you just need OS 9 for use as Classic, and not as a bootable OS 9, your choices are greater.
    • You can copy a working OS 9.1 or greater (OS 9.2.x would be better) System Folder from another machine. Although this would not be bootable, it should provide a full complement of services for use in Classic.
    • You can copy an OS 9 System Folder from an OS 9.1 or greater (again, OS 9.2.x would be better) Install CD. Since the System Folders on OS 9 Install CDs have a very limited assortment of control panels and extensions, many services would not be available in this config.

  • Titanium PB G4 no longer connects to WIFI

Hi, I inherited a lovely TiBook 1Ghz PPC (the previous owner having upgraded to a new Intel MBP).  It has visited here in the past and had no problems connecting to our home wifi, which is a Linksys AP running Tomato 1.2.8 firmware.
Shortly after arriving it quit connecting to the wifi entirely.  It still sees the network; the SSID is 13 characters long and is correctly displayed, as is the authentication type (WPA).  However, type in the password and we'll get 19 seconds worth of daisy wheel, then "Connection timeout".
OK, reinstall the OS (no good).  Upgrade the OS to 10.5 (still no good).  Download the combo updater (STILL no good).
So it's the AP, right?  Well... three other Macs (Macbook and Macbook Pros), two iPod Touchs, two iPhones and a number of PCs owned by friends have absolutely no issues.  But I'm game to try anything.  I switch the encryption from TKIP/AES to AES only, TKIP only and back again.  I go from WPA2/WPA to WPA only, WEP, to none at all.  I tried changing SSIDs.  I tried changing channels (even though there's nothing close enough to interfere) from 6, to 9, to 13, to 2.  The net effect being... zip, zero, nada, nihil abstat.  TiBook 0 - All other players 1.  -.-
Even more maddening?  Version 98 of iStumbler running on the TiBook sees the network just fine.  >.<
The only thing I've not done at this point is go to Panera and see if it will connect to a public AP.

After poking at this off and on for a couple of weeks I decided I just buy a USB wireless device and bypass Airport entirely.  So I searched Amazon, found the ASUS USB-N10 which was well reviewed and had Mac drivers.  $20 and two weeks later it arrived.  I installed the software per the manufacturer and... it crashes.  Won't init at all.  /sigh
So, I post here, hoping someone can smack me with a cluestick and in the meantime the TiBook and I are going to go to Panera.
    Thanks for reading in.

An issue with my PowerBook's built-in Airport card led me to look for an alternative some time ago. Through searching for something Mac compatible on eBay I came across a Sagem PCMCIA wireless card (802.11.g). The joy of it was it was incredibly cheap plus it needed no drivers - the computer just recognises it as an Airport card.
It works fine and I could recommend it. The only downside is the way it projects from the side of the computer
(an Aluminium 1.25GHz). Then the other day I came across this -  an Edimax EW7811Un 802.11 b/g/n USB wirelwss adapter. If the link holds good here it is on Amaazon USA (I bought it from Amazon UK) http://www.amazon.com/Edimax-EW-7811Un-802-11b-Wireless-languages/dp/B003MTTJOY/ ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316631822&sr=8-1
Unable to resist I bought one. You can't believe how small this thing is and it works! I had to download the correct OSX drivers from the Edimax website but setting it up was a cinch and while I've not tested it for range it seems to pull in a good signal. Worth a try if all else fails.

  • EXTRA loops in library

Lots of posts re: missing loops.
I've got two complete sets in different libraries
There are 2 locations for Apple Loops Index, one is
    in home/Library/Audio/Apple Loops Index
the other is in HD/Library/Audio/Apple Loops Index
Which one is GarageBand concerned with?
I have two complete Apple Loops Folders:
    1 in Library/Audio/Apple Loops
    the other in:
    Library/Application Support/Garageband/Apple Loops
The one in the "Audio" folder has a newer date. Is the other one left over from a previous version install and CAN I DELETE IT?
It's taking up a lot of space and TWO of the same loops appear in the loop browser in Garageband.

    Tibook 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1gb ram

You can safely delete one copy (if they really contain the same loops), I'd trash the older one. (Different versions of GB used to store the loops in different places obviously.)
If your Loop Browser is empty afterwards, don't panic, but drag the loops from the finder into the Loop Browser. If there's confusion, you might have to trash the Loop Index folder, too.
