Ticks like a grandfather clock?

When I went to start up my iBook G4 this evening I heard clicking, much like that of a grandfather clock. It wouldn't start up, but a gray screen appeared with folder icon in the center of it. This folder icon alternates flashing between a question mark and the "Picasso" smiley.
I inserted the op sys disk and attempted to use disk utility to see if I could fix it. When it got to the point of selecting a disk there was nothing there to pick from. As far as I can my system is telling me that I do not have a hard drive?
Someone please help - I cannot afford a new laptop, or even to pay to get this one fixed.
Thanks gobs,
Michael

Michael:
I think your diagnosis is correct: your internal drive needs to be replaced. The question at this point is whether you want to attempt to do it yourself, or have someone do it. The iBook is the most difficult Mac laptop to service. To get to the HDD you have to pretty much disassemble the entire computer. That said, it is doable. With screwdriver skill, a gentle touch and good concentration you can do it. If you need assistance selecting a HDD, step-by-step directions and additional tips to help make the job a bit easier, do post back and ask.

How do you setup a reminder signal like an alarm clock?

I am also having a problem setting events in the ICal to alarm with a audible sound. I don't want the email banner notification . I would like to be able to acknowledge the alert. I would like it to alarm until I acknowledge manually.

  • CAN I USE MY PC LIKE AN "ALARM CLOCK"????

I have an HP Touch Smart running Windows 8 (which I don't think means too much to this question).  O.K. Here it is- I'd like to set up my PC to send me "Alerts" kind of like an alarm clock.  If I need to be remimded of an appointment or if I put something in the oven & I need to go check in 1/2 hr, or esp. I want to get in on an auction & it starts in an hr. or so or a later date @ a certain time.  I'd like to st it up on my PC to alert me by a bell or whistle or even better a voice alert saying "the bla bla bla is starting at..."  Can I do this?  Thanks, I'm not great w/computers & how to use them to really simplify my life, normally, it just takes up a lot of my time as I can't type fast, have not set up speaking naturally as I ususally have background noise & think it would require "quiet" & I am also not great w/ instructions.  So all of you wonderfully smart people who know what they are doing, please help me!  Thanks much!

    Hi Mets4Me,
Windows 8 is actually quite relevant to your situation - it is Made for this stuff.  Smiling.
I do not know if there is actually "the exact APP" you seek out there, but you can certainly start looking and have some fun doing it.
On your Start Screen, anywhere on the screen, type "Store" > then Click on the "Store" icon to get into the Windows Store
Next, same thing:  You can start typing along the top part of the plain, white portion of the screen any words you want:  "alerts", or maybe "to do lists", or perhaps "clock"
The Apps that with context for the keyword(s) used will come up on the screen.  You can click on any of the selections to see more about each App.  Be aware that some of the Apps cost money -- not every App is free.
Alternatively, on the Main Store page
You can use your finger (for a touch screen) or your mouse and slide the bar on the bottom to the right to see the different categories.  Along about 3/4 of the way to the end of the way you will find "Productivity" (after Finance).  You can pick, for example, the "Top Free" Apps list.
Will you find something you like?  I do not know, but you might do so and if not, you might find something that will work well enough for the time being.
    Good luck!
    Kind Regards,

My MacAir all of a sudden starts to go off like a cuckoo clock on the hour of each hour.  How do I stop it.  My daughter thinks that I must have accidentally hit some keys to enable this function,  Now I just want it to stop

My suspicion is still that this is caused by some software you have installed. One thing to do would be to generate a system profile via EtreCheck, paste the output here, and maybe someone can spot what software might be generating this sound.

  • "Y'know Bob, a forum is like an enormous clock..."

I've been noticing a lot more Swing-related questions in this forum lately, and I believe it's because of the recent round of "improvements" that were made here. (Not the one where all the messages came out looking like they'd been typed in by drunken monkeys - the one before that.) The Swing forum used to appear near the top of the listing, in the right-hand column. With the new layout, you have to page down (twice, in my case) before it becomes visible. Apparently, even several long-time posters are finding that too much effort. I'm also noticing more JSP questions here, and I think the same reasoning applies. But it's all in the name of efficiency, so I won't complain.

no, it's just the general laziness of the average
person that's catching up with us.
People no longer make the effort to find theproper
place to ask questions, they just ripplefire them
into the first place that comes to mind.
I think it's more to do with people posting their
questions where they think they're most likely to get
    a response.
This forum is far and away the most visited. Swing
isn't so bad, but if you have a question which really
belongs on one of the low-trafic forums your odds of
getting a response are probably better on a less
appropriate, but higher traffic forum (which is
probably why so many cross-post).I agree with this. But you'll find that when I have a question for the SWING forum, I post there, and then, if necessary, I post a link to it here, to avoid cluttering the forums, and to avoid cross-posting. I end up with a very simple, one post thread on this forum, with the important stuff on the other thread. I have done this on occasion, because when you have REALLY obscure questions, you need to post them where a large volume of people will see them, because chances are, the average forum user will not have the answer. You need to find the odd one out that just happens to have come across that problem before, and he's not necessarily using the SWING forum.

  • Proposed weather center / digital frame

I just bought a new macbook pro and have been kicking around ideas for how to make use of my old macbook.  I think the best idea I've had is to disassemble it and use it as a mountable info center and digital photo frame.  I'd like to mount it somewhere on the wall (i'm relatively handy and will probably build a wooden box frame for it).
I have several questions regarding how I should best go about this.  For starters, I've got snow leopard installed atm.  But this new macbook came with mountain lion -- not sure if I could install it on the old macbook too, or even if it would matter one way or another, but that's the situation.
Modifying the OS:  I would like the computer to power up early every morning so I can check the weather before I leave for work, and ideally switch over to photo mode (maybe as a screensaver or something??) throughout the aternoon/evening, and either turn itself off or hibernate every night to save electricity.  Whether I need one or more apps to do this, of if I can just use the OS standard features, I don't know.
For weather, I've been using Swackett, from the app store, and have taken a liking to it.  However, if there were an alternative which would better suit this project, I'd be open for suggestions.
I also searched the app store for a photo frame app.  There are tons of them.  I don't need it to do anything fancy, just randomly display my photos and rotate them every 40 mins to an hour.  Which app would be my best bet??  I like extra features and would pay for them, but not essential... there are just so many apps that seem to be able to do this, its hard to tell which one(s) is/are the best for the job.
Also welcome to any other ideas or suggestions on how I may use this alternatively to just these 2 features, but the general idea is info center and photo display.  Thanks for any advice!

Okay, I found some time to sit down and play with this a little.  I feel like kind of an idiot because most of this functionality was already implemented directly within snow leopard.  I have it set up to auto shutdown/restart overnight, open my weather program on startup, minimize/hide all other processes, and trigger photo slideshows after 2 hours of inactivity, with sleep function deactivated.
I did download a slideshow app that serves as the screen saver and has a big clock displayed along the top of the slideshow pictures.  Also, found another free app to chime like a grandfather clock on the hour.
the last bit is just the assembly part... is it possible to separate the screen panel from the computer/keyboard body, without losing functionality of the screen?  I would like to be able to mount it flat (or disconnect completely), but the hinge only lets you open the screen to about 120 degrees... I'm afraid to take it apart!

  • Ibook won't boot, won't recognise hard drive, PRAM reset etc. Help?

Hi, I'm trying to repair my brother's iBook with limited knowledge. I'm not sure whether it's a G3 or G4 but it was made in 2001, has 2 usb's and a firewire, is white (slightly translucent) and has a 12" screen.
It started having problems starting up so he copied all his important files, just in time as now it won't work at all.
It starts up but just comes up with the ?/folder icon flashing. The hard drive starts "ticking" like an old clock as soon as the power button is pressed, as if it's stuck.
I've tried starting from the 10.3 install CD, this works at first but can't see a hard drive for installation, the same goes for disk utility from the install disk, there's no disk shown to repair.
I've reset the PRAM, PMU and pressed command, ctrl, alt(or shift?) and the power button.
I've started in "safe" mode but it won't get past the grey screen with apple icon.
I've started with alt pressed, this showed an OSX hard drive startup disk ok but would not boot it, it showed the grey screen again with the Apple logo, on one occasion this changed to a "No Entry" sign, a circle with a line through, weird. It has OS9 on here too but that didn't show at all.
After I drove it from his house (100 miles of vibrations) it started up straight away but froze (again with the ticking sound) after about 10 mins when accessing a file. When it started I had to reset the year and time which had changed to 1976, this is why I reset the PRAM. Is there a PRAM battery on these machines that can be changed? Could that be the problem?
On one occasion I held the eject key down at startup after having problems getting it out, the screen showed lots of numbers and something saying "panic: we are hanging here" very weird!
I've pressed down on the case on the left below the keyboard.
The battery seems to hold plenty of charge.
Sorry this is so long but I wanted to give as much detail as possible. I've tried everything I can think of & have read about without spending cash or taking it apart. I think the HD may have had it. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    James

    James,
No need to apologize for the length. That helps a lot. You can tell the model, speed and size by lifting the keyboard (two tabs outboard of the F1 and F11 keys, make sure it's unlocked - that tiny sloted head between F5 and F6)
There'll be a bar coded sticker there.
    However I think it's a 500-900 G3.
It starts up but just comes up with the ?/folder icon flashing. The hard drive starts "ticking" like an old clock ..
That's classic for a bad hard drive.
When it started I had to reset the year and time which had changed to 1976, this is why I reset the PRAM.
That happens when the battery is out with no power plug for longer than a few minutes.
Is there a PRAM battery on these machines that can be changed? Could that be the problem?
No there is no PRAM battery in an iBook. There is a super cap that allows a short time so you can change the battery.
the screen showed lots of numbers and something saying "panic: we are hanging here" very weird!
    Yes that's a kernel panic.
So it boots from the CD but needs a new hard drive.

  • Dashboard Clock Widget like iPhone Clock

I've had an iPhone for a couple of years, and this week I'm finally making the switch from PC to Mac. One of the really simple questions I have is where to find a clock widget for the dashboard that functions like the iPhone clock with time zone clocks, timer, and alarms. Everything I've managed to dig up so far is too bloated for simple daily tasks like quickly checking what time zone a client is in before calling. Is there anything out there someone can recommend that is as easy to use and straightforward as the iPhone clock app except for the dashboard?

Actually if you want to do a bit of tinkering you can change the clock face to ANY city town or village you likr just follow this link

  • HD Ticking

I am restarting this thread becuase I have not found an answer to this problem and is appears I am not the only one. I have included relevant posts from the previous thread as well.
I am an experienced Mac user. I have been using them since 1987 and have been a professional consultant in the past. This noise is NOT normal HD noise and it is NOT HD failure noise. It is a regular read/write noise that activates every +second. See Activity Monitor data below.
After starting up my powerbook my hard drive clicks every second like a metronome. The clicking sound starts as soon as the HD spins up even before the Apple logo appears. If I put the computer to sleep and wait for the hard drive to spin down and then wake it up the clicking stops and does not start again until I restart. Running it hard will cause the clicking to restart (as in watching a DVD).
Completely reformating the hard drive and reinstalling the OS does not have any affect. When the drive has been completely zeroed out and the computer is running from an external disk, the hard drive still clicks which lead me to believe it is something that originates from the HD drivers. Updating to 10.3.9 does not help.
Research using Activity Monitor and attempting to issolate the activity leads me to believe that the following activity is the cause of the clicking sound.
    write 0.000027 SystemUIServ
    06:23:21 write 0.000005 SystemUIServ
    06:23:21 select 0.981418 W configd

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on here and how to fix it?
    Thanks for your help.

i have a refurbished powerbook, just got it a few weeks ago. now the hard drive is starting to click every second. activity monitor shows it accessing the drive...writing 2kb, 4kb intermittently every second. and every now and then, it shows 'osascript' under process name (all of this is under 'disk activity')
    this can't be normal.
    any thoughts?
    Ned Snowing
I had this same issue some time ago with my PowerBook's hard drive (an Hitachi). TO be honest I don't know when it stopped although I'm pretty sure is had something to do with one or more of the software updates.
Maybe you should try updating to 10.3.9… using the combo updater and not the delta updater.
    666dorado
yeah, but the point is that it's not just clicking every now and then. it's like constant clicking every second. and it's a new machine.
it didn't do it before, and it's not doing it now, but did all last night. activity monitor showed writing to the disk 2kb and 4kb constantly. i figured out it may have something to do with dashboard widgets?. seems like if you have some of the widgets 'running' underneath, it may be accessing the drive (like the world clock for instance, or istat pro?)...
or is it software related and the HD is stuck in some menial task. all SMART and hardware tests show no problems, but this CAN'T be normal behavior (constant nonstop perfectly-timed repetitive clicking).
    Ned Snowing
Seriously, my drive does/did the exact same thing like it's seeking but really it's not. Sort of like the thing is having a brain f@rt! It's not new and had been quite common to the Hitachi TravelStar drives. Mostly, I found that I got the clicking when things got really hot and putting it to sleep for a moment did the trick. I've not had to do that for quite some time though.

Obviously it is normal for there to be some hard drive noise. My experience is that there is hard drive noise when the computer is calling for information from the hard drive. This particular noise is never heard during normal hard drive use. Please note that those read/writes are happening within the space of a tenth of a second or less. The activity shown in the log might be normal if it wasn't for the fact that:
    1) it is happening like clockwork once every second even when there is no computer activity that would call for a read/write to the HD.
    2) once the computer is put to sleep after start up then the activity ceases until there is extreeme heat or hard use. There is no instance in normal operation after the "sleep fix" is instituted that the hard drive makes that ticking noise.
    3) the behaviour did not start until after it was looked at by an Apple certified technicial for an unrelated issue.
I have not only run the hardware test, but TechTool Pro does not detect any problems either.
Thanks for the tip on backing up. I have been doing that religiously for 15 years.

  • Buffered event counting. Why can't I explicitly sequence generating the Sample Clock Pulse and reading the counters?

At irregular occasions I need to grab counts from several counters, and buffering the counts must be done simultaneously for all counters. I'm modeling my approach after zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5404 which someone kindly pointed out in an earlier thread. However, that example only uses one counter, and you can't test the synchronization with only one counter, so I am using two counters configured the same way, and they're wired to a single benchtop signal generator (for example at 300 kHz).
What I want to do, I can test in a loop with a somewhat random wait in it. I want to drive a hardware digital output line high for a few ms and then low again. The hardware line is physically connected to terminals for my timing vi's Sample Clock Source and so will cause them to buffer their counts for later reading. After I pulse this line, when I know new good buffered counts await me, I want to read both my counters. If their bufferings are simultaneous, then each counter will have counted the same number of additional counts since the last loop iteration, which I can check by subtracting the last value sitting in a shift register and then subtracting the two "additional counts" values and displaying this difference as "Diff". It should always be 0, or occasionally +1 followed immediately by -1, or else the reverse, because buffering and a count could happen practically at the same moment.
When I do this using a flat sequence to control the relative timing of these steps, so the read happens after the pulse, the counters often time out and everything dies. The lengths of time before, during, and after the pulse, and the timeout value for the read vi, and the size of the buffer and various other things, don't seem to change this, even if I make things so long I could do the counting myself holding a clipboard as my buffer. I've attached AfterPulse.vi to illustrate this. If I get 3 or 10 or so iterations before it dies, I observe Diff = 0; at least that much is good.
When I use two flat sequences running in parallel inside my test loop, one to control the pulse timing, and the other to read the counters and do things with their results, it seems to work. In fact, Diff is always 0 or very occasionally the +/- 1 sequence. But in this case there is nothing controlling the relative timing such that the counters only get read after the pulse fires, though the results seem to show that this is true. I think the reads should be indeterminate with respect to the pulses, which would be unreliable. I don't know why it's working and can't expect it to work in other environments, can I? Moreover, if I set some of the pulse timing numbers to 1 or 2 or 5 ms, timeouts start happening again, too. So I think I have a workaround that I don't understand, shouldn't work, and shouldn't be trusted. See SeparateSequence.vi for this one.
I also tried other versions of the well-defined, single sequence vi, moving the counter reads to different sequence frames so that they occur with the Sample Clock Source's rising edge, or while it is high, or with the falling edge, and they also often time out. I'll post these if anyone likes but can't post now due to the attachment limit.
Here's an odd, unexpected observation: I have to sequence the reads of the counters to occur before I use the results I read, or else many of the cycles of this combine a new count from one counter with the one-back count from the other counter, and Diff takes on values like the number of counts in a loop. I though the dataflow principle would dictate that current values would get used, but apparently not so. Sequencing the calculations to happen after the reads fixes this. Any idea why?
So, why am I not succeeding in taking proper control of the sequence of these events?
    Thanks!!!

Kevin, thanks for all the work.
    >Have you run with the little execution highlighting lightbulb on? -Yes. In versions of this where there is no enforced timing between the counter and the digital line, and there's a delay inserted before the digital line, it works. There are nearly simultaneous starts on two tracks. Execution proceeds directly along the task wire to the counter. Meanwhile, the execution along the task wire to the digital high gets delayed. Then, when the digital high fires, the counter completes its task, and execution proceeds downstream from the counter. Note, I do have to set the timeout on the counter longer, because the vi runs so slowly when it's painting its progress along the wires. If there is any timing relationship enforced between the counter and the digital transition, it doesn't work. It appears to me that to read a counter, you have to ask it for a result, then drive the line high, and then receive the result, and execution inside the counter has to be ongoing during the rising line edge.
    >from what I remember, there isn't much to it.  There really aren't many candidate places for trouble.  A pulse is generated with DIO, then a single sample is read from each counter.  -Yup, you got it. This should be trivial.
    >A timeout means either that the pulse isn't generated or that the counter tasks don't receive it. - Or it could mean that the counter task must be in the middle of executing when the rising edge of the pulse arrives. Certainly the highlighted execution indicates that. Making a broken vi run by cutting the error wires that sequence the counter read relative to the pulse also seems to support that.
    >Have you verified that the digital pulse happens using a scope? -Verified in some versions by running another loop watching a digital input, and lighting an indicator, or recording how many times the line goes high, etc. Also, in your vi, with highlighting, if I delete the error wire from the last digital output to the first counter to allow parallel execution, I see the counter execution start before the rising edge, and complete when the line high vi executes. Also, if I use separate loops to drive the line high and to read the counter, it works (see TwoLoops.vi or see the screenshot of the block diagram attached below so you don't need a LV box). I could go sign out a scope, but think it's obvious the line is pulsing given that all these things work.
    >Wait!  I think that's it!  If I recall correctly, you're generating the digital pulse on port0/line0...  On a 6259, the lines of port 0 are only for correlated DIO and do not map to PFI. -But I'm not using internal connections, I actually physically wired P0L1 (pin 66) to PFI0 (pin 73). It was port0/line1, by the way. And when running some of these vi's, I also physically jumper this connection to port0/line2 as an analog input to watch it. And, again, the pulse does cause the counter to operate, so it clearly connects - it just doesn't operate the way I think it is described operating.
For what it's worth, there's another mystery. Some of the docs seem to say that the pulse has to be applied to the counter gate terminal, rather than to the line associated with the sample clock source on the timing vi. I have tried combinations of counter gate and or sample clock source and concluded it seems like the sample clock source is the terminal that matters, and it's what I'm using lately, but for example the document I cited, "Buffered Event Counting", from last September, says "It uses both the source and gate of a counter for its operation. The active edges on the gate of a counter is used to latch the current count register value in a hardware register which is then transferred via Direct Memory Access...". I may go a round of trying those combinations with the latest vi's we've discussed.

  • Analog clock -- with numbers?

I like the analog clock on the external screen of my Style, but it can be difficult to read at a quick glance, since it has no numbers, and the 5-minute marks are all the same size.
Is there any way of having a clock that looks just like the current analog one, but has numbers at least in the 12-3-6-9 positions?

    Hi jturecek
The Clock application on the BlackBerry® smartphone does not have the option to show numbers.
    Thanks
