Tidy up scanned hand drawings

Dear forum,
I have several hundred TIF images at 1200 dpi+ which represent scans of hand drawings on parchment paper using pencil or ink-pen (.2mm or thereabouts) of 4000 year old cuneiform documents. The drawings were made over an extended period of time, the paper varied, and ultimately, the scans reflect this in that some lines are darker than others and there are occasional 'smudgy' areas etc.
What I would like to do prior to publication is to sharpen the images and make them consistent across the repertoire as black on white background.
I'm not well versed in the details of how various Photoshop (CS5, Mac) commands do what they do, but I've found several that seem like they might get me where I want to go: Levels (Auto?), Threshold, Shadows/Highlights... and there may be more that I don't know about.
I'm hoping someone can point me in the ideal direction for this sort of task, which I'd like to automate to run over a directory of images if possible. At the same time, I might have to change the dpi and output format of the new images.
I've attached a sample. In this case, the drawing is fairly clear (not much 'grey' background) but the lines are not as black and sharp as they could be.
Many thanks for any help that anyone can offer!

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions on how to go about this. I finally came up with the following method, which may not be the most efficient, but it works...
Tidy up the drawings using pen (fill in unclosed loops) and eraser (remove overshot of original pen).
Add new adjustment layer: levels. Manually adjust to remove mid-tones and get a reasonably but not over-dark image.
Save.
Apply magic want to background (i.e. 'white' area).
Select inverse.
Refine edges with smooth set to 20, output to layer mask.
Add new layer, fill with white; move to just above background layer.
Add new layer, fill with black; move the layer mask from above to this layer.
Move the levels adjustment layer to just above background layer.
Hide background.
Flatten image.
Save in 1200dpi output directory.
Change image size to 600dpi.
Save in 600dpi output directory.
I saved this as an action, with pause at the levels adjustment layer, since it seems best to adjust for each image. I've also found that since it is best to touch up all the drawings individually, I may as well run this action right afterwards, rather than as a big batch job.
Hope this may be helpful to someone else.

  • Mf6161dw scans are too light when scanning hand written text

mf6161dw scans are too light when scanning hand written text. I changed from b&w to greyscale, which now makes the text legible. However the text is still medium grey instead of black on my old scanner. Need help or i will have to return it.

    Hi steelcofence.
When scanning handwritten documents, the light from the lamp may reflect on the ink.  Since scanning in greyscale did not return the image quality that you would prefer, I recommend scanning handwritten documents in [Color].

  • Scanning pencil drawings from vellum to transparent background??

Hi, how can pencil drawings on vellum (or any white background) be scanned into Photoshop in a way which would render their white backgrounds transparent?
Is there a trick to layer settings, for example, which will take out the (grayish) scanned white background and enable one to replace it with transparency or another color altogether?
    Thanks

Those Berg Designs Filters are pretty darn cool Buko- Thanks.
    jezzthisisfull,
That filter might do it for you, and you have nothing to lose by trying. If not, you could go about it the old fashion way.
Duplicate the channel that has the most contrast (if there's any difference), apply Levels or Curves to the new channel and really Blast the contrast. (I prefer Curves).
Then use that channel as a mask.
Potential problem: Depending on how clean the line drawings are, you might get fuzzy edges. (You know those little lead flakes that aren't really that noticeable in the originals but always got you busted by your Typography teacher anyway.)

  • Scanned hand signature vulnerability

    Hi,
I have few scanned documents which have my hand signature in my laptop computer. I am afraid that if my laptop is stolen and goes to the wrong hands, these signatures can be used to fake my signature.
May someone with my scanned sigature exploit it for bad purpurses ? I mean, is a simple scanner resolution (like 300DPI) really enough to fake my signature ?
What is the maximum resolution which disables the ability to fake my signature  ?
Is there any other solution you suggest (except encrypting my files, which I don't want to do because I am afraid that if I forget the password, the file would be no use) ?

Hand-written signatures are not really used for identifying a person, do they? Unless you're a known athlete or author or something like that they're pretty much meaningless.
And if you sign a document anyone with access to it can simply extract it from there (scan it, take a picture of it, etc.) and have a perfect (digital) copy of your signature, so there's no real way you can protect yourself from that.
If someone wants to sign in your name they can do it with or without a copy of your signature, so I wouldn't worry about it. That's not what's going to stop someone from faking your signature.

  • Tracing line drawings

I trying to trace scanned line drawings so that I get only one path per line going up the middle of the line and not a path along each edge of the pencil or ink line and a fill between. What I hope to do is convert each line in the artwork to a single path in Illustrator. So far I havent found the right settings. Using Illustrator CS3. Someone told me Coreldraw can do this but I enjoy using Illustrator.

    Ron,
Quick, before James tells you that you are a masochist:
    1. Cut the path at the ends of each edge,
    2. Select both edge paths,
    3. Object>Blend>Make and Object>Expand,
    4. Ungroup and delete the edge paths,
    5. Enjoy.

  • Pre-newbie help! Computer guidance needed so wanted to ask the pros (you)

    Hi all,
I am a jewelry designer - have been for over 25 years (pencil to paper) and want expand my knowledge and learn Illustrator and Photoshop. I want to come out of the dark ages regarding HOW I design to become more efficient AND hopefully increase my marketability. I need a new computer so figured now was a perfect time to ask the experts in this field as to what system would be a good into place to start. Laptop preferred so I can learn wherever I am. I figure by the time I am doing well, it may be time to upgrade.  Cost is a factor but I realize I am going to need to invest a little more on the front end to get the proper equipment.
While I am here, where is a good place to start regarding which illustrator to go with.
I thank you in advance for your help.
    Jill

I am a designer for a larger Mfg company - not just someone who tinkers in her own studio (although that part is the best).  Hand drawings can be scanned in and traced.  It is a way to get a more accurate diamond weight and estimated metal weight to determine whether it is what is wanted BEFORE it is given to our CAD team.  All of which are imperative to fit within certain price point targets. Details (scroll thickness, wall thickness, prong details, etc) are made much more clear for the CAD operator who may or may not have any design background.  It will also allow me to start with one element and take that element to make a pendant.  Then copy that exact element to lay out earrings (maybe flip for a left and right).  Then copy further to lay our a bracelet....whatever it may be.  Any tweaking that I want to do can be more automatic then re-drawing everything in order to compare.  .
In addition, computers (illustration, Photoshop and certainly CAD - typically Rhino/Matrix in the US) are mainstream - unlike when I started.  Not as many people hand draw so I am lucky in that regard. Certainly not as many people carve and cast wax as they once did to make a model.  The CAD is loaded into a 3D printer, cast and voila - a master model.
I may or may not want to move to higher caliber companies as I continue to develop my career.  Many of the larger companies I casually have my eye on ALL require Illustrator/Photoshop of their designer.  Some actually say that CAD is encouraged but not necessary.  Seems backwards to me but.....what do I know//
That's basically it in a nutshell.  The schooling I am not really concerned about.  I am looking for guidance on a suitable system that I will need at home (because I need a new computer anyway) that would allow me to have what I need eventually loading these systems on and learning what I hope to learn.

  • Images from Mac to PC

    Greetings,
I scanned some drawings as jpegs on my mac and they appear skinny on my work PC. Specifcally, if I measure the image on each screen, the PC image is 1.08 times the width, but 1.16 times the height of the mac image.
This is a problem! Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

Well again I am not certain what you have set up. Let's say for arguements sake that both computers have a display resolution of 800x600. Now if both monitors are the same (CRT or LCD) 19" with maybe 17.9" or so viewing area then I would expect both images to appear the same. If one monitor is 19" and the other, say 17" with probably a 16.1" viewing area even though both are set at 800x600 the displays will still look different. My PowerBook with a 15" display set at 1280x854 is vastly different from my desktop PC 19" monitor (17.9" viewable) at 1152x864. A 6 1/4x4 1/2" image on my PowerBook appears as 5 1/4x7" on my PC monitor. Setting both at 1024x768 yields 5 1/4x7" (PB) & 6x7 3/4"(PC) for the same image file. So, you can now see the frustration at hand..

  • Is Flash what I should be using for this simple animation?

Hi I have a fairly simple question...
Im working on a project which started with simple drawings of
a particular animal. One of the drawings ive done involves the
motion of part of this animal. The next portion of this assignment
requires me to begin working digitally, and recreating these
    drawings precisely in Autocad.
The problem is that I need essentially create a storyboard of
images showing the motion of this animal in detail. So essentially
im going to need 40+ frames showing this motion. It would be the
equivalent of creating a flip book animation, but im going to be
tiling all these frames next to eachother.
Now as opposed to drawing 40+ separate images I had the idea
to use Flash to produce these images for me.
Heres essentially what I want to do:
    - Scan the drawings ive done
    - Reproduce them digitally through Autocad
    - Import these drawings into Flash (either as Autocad files
or I can convert them to Illustrator files)
    - Basically have two images... 1 at the start of the motion
and 1 at the end of the motion, and use flash tween's to
    extrapolate the motion in between.
So ideally I could create 40 frames, with the 1st keyframe
showing the beginning of the motion, the 40th showing the final
stage of motion, and each frame in between providing me with the
    separate drawing that I need.
Any thoughts or advice on how I can go about doing this? I
havent used Flash in years so im still relatively unskilled with
    it...
Thanks so much for your help!!

I agree with Gibbah. Flash doesn't do magic with tweens. Of
course, you can try. But if you're looking for NATURAL motion, then
it needs to be drawn naturally-by hand.
Sure, you can try it in Flash, but at best it will help you
to tween every 4th drawing or so (so you'll still need 10 key
drawings), and you'll spend ages tweaking the tweens, since (I
repeat) Flash doesn't do magic with tweens, nor does any other
software. You're talking of 4-legged animal movement, which I
assume includes walking, which is a pretty complicated thing: 4
legs, each double-jointed, plus the feet, then a body which bends,
and the head and neck which move up and down. You'll have to
separate each leg, the body and the head, at the very least, tween
each of these, then go back and fix where the tweens come out all
    screwy.
As for scanning, you can scan line artwork (preferably very
clean lines done with pen or dark pencil) and then vectorize them
directly in Flash. No need for the Autocad stage.
To be honest, I think you'll find it faster to do the 40
drawings individually. Check a good reference book such as the
famous Eadweard Muybridge (yes, I spelled it correctly) photos of
animal movements, and then you can rotoscope these (that is, trace
them). You'll end up with less frustration and a gorgeous animation
which looks natural, not machine-made. You could do the tracing
directly in Flash as well, using the onion skin mode to help
    you.

  • Some of my images do not show up (some do) when I publish a Dreamweaver document

Here's my problem: I have been working on a web site, using Dreamweaver CS6. Working on a mac with 10.6.8. The site has several pages, and several of these pages have several images each. All the images are jpgs. Some are RGB files, drawn from digital cameras. The others are grayscale files, drawn from scans from drawings.
On some pages there are no problems. But there is one page of drawings that has three tables--one table has eight cells that each have an RGB image--fine, no problem. Another table has two cells that each have a grayscale image. Also fine. The final table has eight cells that each have a grayscale image. In Dreamweaver the page looks fine, and when I "preview in browser," it looks fine. But when i publish the page, only one of the images is visible. with Safari or Firefox I can determine that there is a file there somewhere, what its name is--but they don't recognize it as an image, and in fact I get a "404" response.
I have examined the code, and can't find ANY difference ebtween the images thast work and those that don't. I have examined the images, and there are no differences among them that I can find--and there shouldn't be.
I tried just creating a new page, and had the same problem with these images.
The one image among the 8 that shows up only did that when i changed iits location in the directory--but changing the location of other files didn't work.
Any ideas? I have gone over and over the files, the code, the information about the links for hours; this is making me very crazy.

OK you need to upload these images to your remote server because they are missing from the server or that they have gone to a different folder.

In future always define your site correctly with all folders and file names without spaces in them.  For example "drawings 20" is not a good name.  You should rename it to "drawings20".
When you have corrected this especially when you have uploaded the photos again then they will appear all right on the page.  after that you need to validate your pages for correct HTML and CSS but this can wait for now.
    Good luck.

  • ITunes library and my external hard drive

My iTunes library is on an external hard drive (for well over a year with no problems). All of a sudden, my laptop/iTunes can't locate the files unless I manually go into the HD and find it. How do I get my laptop to automatically read the library?

Normally your iTunes library is created at <User's Music>\iTunes with the media folder at <User's Music>\iTunes\iTunes Media with the exact path to <User's Music> depending on the version of the operating system and your profile's user name.
With things in this layout you can move the main iTunes folder to a new path and things generally carry on working. (There is a minor exception for iPod Games/Mobile Applications if the library is in the pre-iTunes 9 layout.)
What tends to happen when people run out of room is that they read some advice about relocatiing the media folder rather than the library as a whole. This involves nominating a new location for the media folder, then consolidating all content to that new location, leaving the original copies behind to be tidied up by hand. While this works it removes the resiliance of the self-contained library.
Take a look at one of files that can be found. The path should be something like <Drive Letter:>\<Some Folders>\[Music\]<Album Artist>\<Album>\## <Track>.<ext>. Your media folder under Edit > Preferences > Advanced should be the same as this bit: <Drive Letter:>\<Some Folders>
Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
There is a hidden file called .iTunes Preferences.plist in the media folder that lets iTunes know if it is in the new layout or the old one. Occasionaly this file can be incorrectly updated which could be a cause of your current issue. There is a line in the file that reads <integer>0</integer> if the folders are in the old layout or <integer>1</integer> if they are in the new one. Correct the value if necessary and restart iTunes.
Again, if that doesn't fix it, try selecting some broken tracks and using my FindTracks script. If it works for them then it should work for the rest.

  • Photoshop CS5 can only decode fax encoded images up to 32767 pixels wide and tall

    Dear Sir/Madam,
Can you please help me? I am scanning large drawings using an Xerox 6204 Large printer/scanner. The resolution is set at 600 and saved as .tif. Photoshop CS3 can open files with no problems, but CS5 gives me the following message:
"Photoshop can only decode fax encoded images up to 32767 pixels wide and tall"
I can also view with infarview and open with applications such as corel draw. Am I missing a plug-in or patch update? The same file can be opened in both Photoshop versions if I scan at resolution 300.
    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Mylenium,
Many thanks for the prompt reply.
I agree with you... it's a little odd to save on fax tiff format... to be honest, it's not like we have an option on the matter... the XEROX 6204 Large Format Printer/Scanner either give us .Tif or .PDF options... Anyway's no problem with CS3 or other software like mentioned above... so even knowing it's a bit strange to use such format, still does not explain why on CS5 I get this error message. Furthermore if I open on CS3 and save as (same file name and same format .tif) I can then open on CS5!!!!
To my surprise, I did not know it was saving as a fax tif... all I get is tif. Even so if all other software including an older version of Photoshop can open it why CS5 can not? What is missing? As mentioned if scanned at 300 dpi it opens... Confused. Very confused!!
    All the best
