Tidying photos between devices

Hi there,
I have an iMac and a Macbook Pro (which I take away with me)... as a result, my photos are a mess! I have some that are on both, some that are on and not the other and vice versa. It would take me forever to sort through them all individually. Is there any way I can merge / sync the two libraries (my iMac was initialised and set up using a Time Machine backup of my Macbook), remove duplicates and then keep them synced. I am away from home every two weeks, so this is a frequent issue - I'd like to be able to sync them every time I come back. Is iCloud the answer? I am not really sure about using iCloud or keeping my photos on iCloud - because they are not on my machines then, or are they? TBH, I've been too scared to try iCloud in case I lose a bunch of photos.
Thanks in advance,
Sarah

If both Macs are signed into the same iCloud account and have iPhotos' iCloud preference setup as shown below, any new photo taken on either Mac will be imported into the other automatically:
Each month there's be a new Event with the photos taken that month and shared via this way:
Or, you can merge the two libraries intro one library with the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager. Once you have all ofd your photos into one library you can copy that library to both Macs so they are identical.
When you return from travels with new photos on your MacBook Pro you can use iPLM to copy the new events from your MBP library to your iMac library.  Just connect the two so one Mac can access the other, i.e LAN, ethernet cable, Firewire for Target Disk Mode, etc.  You will have to copy any new events on the iMac over to the MBP in order to keep them identical.

  • Organizing photos between devices in iPhoto

    Hi guys,
I am greatly confused and really hope you can help me out! I have searched for hours now and I am still not sure of the answer, so even though it might be answered in other threads I still hope you will help me...
I have and iPhone and a Macbook. Between these two devices I want to share and organize my photos taken with the iPhone. First of all the photos are obviously saved in the camera roll - and since I have enabled photoStream they are saved here as well.
For a while ago I read that to organize the photos I should syncronize with iPhoto, organize into albums and syncronize back to the phone. That kinda works, however now the photos are takin up space 3 times! That is very confusing and a waste of space!
What I really want is actually to have the photos in the camera roll until I have organized them into albums and then I want to be able to delete them from the camera roll. That way I ensure that I have organized all photos.
I really appreciate any tips as this is really frustrating...

And what is the difference between events and albums in iPhoto? I get that one solution is to import all photos to iPhoto and then organize the photos into albums. However they still apear in events - and with all these events ordered by dates how will I ever ensure that I have organized all images into albums?
iPhoto does not store photos. It only references photos in your camera roll, in events synced to your iDevice from your Mac, uploaded using the camera connection kit, or imported by other apps.
    See the iPhoto Help: http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkbc26e276
iPhoto will not use additional space, if a photo is used in an album and also appears in an event or the camera roll.

What kind of albums are you asking about? The albums that iPhoto creates by tagging, or the abums you create in the Camera Roll?  Either way, these albums do not store the photos, they only group them  differently for easy access. When you delete the photos from your camera roll, the photos will vanish from the albums as well, because they are one and the same image.
Anyway, it is no good idea to delete the photos from the Camera Roll. The Camera Roll is the central sharing place of your iPhone. Other apps can access your photos in the Camara Roll, the Camera Roll can be downloaded to your computer, the Camera Roll is backed up in your iCloud backup.
Should I rather organize only in events and not use albums?
Use the camera roll and events to store all your photos, and use albums to create selections for special purposes to easily access them and retrieve them.
First of all the photos are obviously saved in the camera roll - and since I have enabled photoStream they are saved here as well.
The camera roll stores the photos, but the Photo Stream is just a temporary buffer to share the photos. Don't rely on Photo Stream to keep the photos for ever. It will only keep the most recently added photos and no more than a thousand photos on your iPhone.

The general idea of that advice is to keep the photos off your phone:
Organize them on your mac, store all photos on your mac, and back them up regularly, so that you have them safe.
Then delete the photos from your phone to free space.
Now create albums on your mac with your most important photos that you want to have on your iPhone as well and regularly sync your current selection of favorite photos to your iPhone.
What may be confusing for you, is that you are trying to achieve something, that the two versions o iPhoto on your mac and your iPhone are not intended for and do not support well - two keep two photolibraries in sync. The apps support sharing of selected photos, but not syncing libraries. So have one well organized library on your mac, and share to your iPhone what you want on the phone as well, for example by setting up shared photostreams or syncing with iTunes.

  • Synching photos between devices

Photos taken on my iPhone and iPad mini automatically synch between these two devices. However, I can't figure out how to get those devices to synch their photos with my Mac mini (has iPhoto 11). Shouldn't this be possible?

I'm not on Facebook, so I can't use that as a test. As soon as I open iPhoto it asks what library I want (although it lists none). The Choose button is grayed out. Other Library button opens finder to Desktop. Create New takes me to a Finder screen that says "Save As:" at the top. The files it shows are 2013, iPod Photo Cache and Lightroom. That's it.
Try launching iPhoto while holding down the Option key. It should then ask you what library you want to use and should show a Finder screen. From there navigate to your home folder ~/Pictures and in that folder you should find a file named iPhoto Library or perhaps a variation on that theme. Select iPhoto Library which should activate the Choose button. Click on choose and hopefully you will be back in business and you will also see Photo Stream inder WEB in the sidebar.

  • Syncing photos between devices

I use an iPhone 5s with os 7.1.2 and just got iPad air 2 with os 8.1. Why can't I see my old iPhone  pictures on my iPad? There is nothing on photo stream and nothing on iCloud library beta when I turn it on

There are third party WiFi transfer apps that will move the photos from one device to another and to your computer as well. There are a number of them in the App Store, but I use this one and it works quite well.

I encourage you to do a search in the App Store and read the reviews to make sure that the apps suit your needs.

  • Trouble sharing photos between devices via iCloud photostream

I have trouble sharing photos in my iPod 4th generation with an iPad 2 user. I've sent an invitation to an iPad user to share my shared album with him but he didn't receive any email regarding on this invitation. Whereas, when the iPad user invite me to share his album, I've receive the email and joined his photostream. Unfortunately, the album didn't appear in my iPod. Can someone help me identify the problem? Thank you

    Hi LCelineee,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
These tips may help if your shared photo stream invitation is not being received:
I've sent email invitations to my shared stream, but not everyone received one.
    Try these troubleshooting steps:
Ask the person you're inviting to check any junk or spam email folders for the invitation.
Try resending the invitation. If a recipient still doesn't get the invitation, send it to a second or alternate email address for that person. The recipient's mailbox may be full, or either the person or the email service provider may have a filter that is preventing the email from being delivered. If you're using iOS 7, you can also send the invitation to the phone number that the recipient uses for iMessages.
If the person has received an invitation at least once in the past, that person may have opted to unsubscribe from future iCloud Photo Sharing emails. See the section on opting out of emails, below, for more details.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, contact Apple Support for further assistance.

  • HT201317 To use iCloud for photo storage do I have to share all images between devices?

How to use iCloud to backup photos?

You can't. iCloud is not a photo backup service.
It can be used as a conduit for transferring the last 1000 photos between devices and your computer for 30 days.
    Read about Photostream here: http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/photo-stream.html

  • I made a photo book in iPhoto and would like to transfer the book to my iPhoto on other macs and iPad.   How is this done and can it be synced between devices like photo stream.

I made a photo book in iPhoto and would like to transfer the book to my iPhoto on other macs and iPad.   How is this done and can it be synced between devices like photo stream?

You can create a Quicktime movie slideshow of the book's pages and share that. Here's how to get your book into an iPhoto slideshow and then export as a Quicktime video:
1 - While viewing the book type Command+P to start the print process.
2  - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
Note:  If you don't have any of those options go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Unzip the files and place in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
3 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered).
4 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto. Immediately select all of the photos in the new album and sequentially renumber them as "Page  " using the Batch Change ➙ Title to Text with the option to add a sequential number to each title.  This is to let you put the pages back in the correct order in the event they get sorted incorrectly.
Now you can proceed as follows: create the slideshow in iPhoto and export it out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large (480p with iPhoto 9),
    Happy New Year

  • I am confused about how to manage photos between my iPhone, iMac and iPad.  How do I avoid using all the storage pace on my various devices?

How do I manage photos between my ipad, iphone and imac without using all the storage on the various devices?

If enabled, iCloud Photo Stream ensures all new photos are sent to all your devices. Then you can simply add the ones you want to each one's Library, and delete any photos you don't want.
One technique is to designate one device as the "master" containing all your photos - probably your iMac, since it is likely to have the greatest available storage - and make sure you have a backup strategy for it. That way, any photos you choose to keep on your iPad and iPhone are redundant copies that can be deleted as you wish, or as required should you need to restore your iOS device. If your iMac breaks and its Library irretrievably lost, the importance of its backup becomes critical. Therefore, consider having more than one backup, and more than one geographical location for them.

  • How are photos deleted between devices?

Once all photos  are in the cloud what are the deletion rules between devices?  If my MBP and cloud storage hold the originals, what happens when I delete a photo from my iPad or phone? Using newest OS update and Photos update (not iPhoto).

To refresh on Mac iCal: View > Refresh all (see screen shot).
To refresh on iOS devices I find that to quit and reboot the app usually speeds things up (double tap home button > press and hold app in question > tap red minus that appears > then reopen from home screen).

  • How can I share photos between my iphone and ipad?

I want to automatically share photos between my iPhone and iPad.  I use iCloud and I setup Photo Stream but my photos are not moving from one device to the other. My goal is to have all my photos on both devices- automatically. How can I accomplish this?
    Thank you!

Photos will Not go between iPad & iPhone..they have to go thro' iCloud as a provider or sync via your computer individually...you need Wireless on both or a direct USB connection..
On each iPad and iPhone you can initialize via the Summary/Photos when they are connected via iTunes..

  • How to share contact including photo between iPhones?

I tried iMessage and e-mailing a vCard, but neither method transfers the contact along with their photo between an iP5 and an iP4.
    What is the correct method?

True, but of course, they may not already have a photo if they don't have the contact info. I'd say that was more likly the case.
My wife, for instance, doesn't keep photos of all of our friends on her phone, but does sometimes need a copy of the contact info I have.
I imagine that mostly, the photo would be useful and if the recipient of the contact info does indeed have their own photo, they can substitute it easily.
Less easy however, by quite some way, is the need to use a photo received by e-mail separately, because you also can't copy/paste an image from an e-mail into a contact.
You need to save the image into the Camera Roll and then choose it from within the Contacts app.
Also, who's to say the sender of the contact info actually has the image to send by e-mail in the first place? Often the one attached to the contact is the only version on the phone.
Contact Sharing is supposed to be very simple and this missing function makes it a more complex procedure IMHO.
Don't get me wrong, I love my iP5 (I don't sleep with it or anything), as I did the iP4 before that and the iP3GS before that, but this missing feature is a real shame considering the cost of these devices and their otherwise excellent "ease of use".
I must admit, I do find it quite interesting on here that no matter how poor an implimentation is on the iPhone, everyone is extremely protective of Apple, to the point of coming up with half reasons for a simple feature not to exist.
I shall feed back to Apple.
