Tif files aren't recognized by LR5

I have hundreds of .tif files that I'm trying to import into Lightroom so I can evaluate whether I want to switch from Aperture. All of the .tifs have been created in Photoshop and may or may not have compression. Lightroom does not recognize them as image files until I go into the folder and put .tif at the end of each photo. Mac OS recognizes them, Preview recognizes them, Photoshop recognizes them. Why is Lightroom having this problem and is there a workaround that doesn't involve me converting everything to dng or adding .tif to the end of all my files?

Mac OS X assigns a Type Code, Creator Code, and adds a file extension, which can be hidden (but it''s still there). LR is probably expecting all files to have an extension identifying the file type, regardless of whether it's "hidden." If this is true then TIFF files created on Mac OS prior to OS X (Circa 2002) will not be recognized by LR.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filename_extension#Usage
"Pre-OS X versions of the Mac OS disposed of filename-based extension metadata entirely, instead using a distinct file type code to identify the file format. Additionally, a creator code was specified to determine which application would be launched when the file's icon was double-clicked. Mac OS X, however, uses filename suffixes, as well as type and creator codes, as a consequence of being derived from the UNIX-like NeXTSTEP operating system."
Simplest solution is as suggested and don't save files in PS without a file extension in the future. You can still hide the extension if you like.

  • CR2 files aren't recognized by CS3.

Shooting with a Canon 5dMarkii.  Windows 7; Photoshop CS3.  When I try to open RAW (CR2) files, I get a message that the file type can't be recognized.  I've not had this problem before.  My "updates" says that everything is current.  Help?

Your camera is newer than the last available update to PS-CS3, so you either need to buy CS6, sign up for PS-CC or use the free DNG Converter to make DNGs out of your CR2s that can be opened in your ancient Camera Raw plug-in for CS3.  Another path which requires more of a workflow change would be to purchase Lightroom 5, and use Edit in Photoshop CS3 with LR Adjustments when you need to do final edits in Photoshop.  The newer toning options available in LR5/CS6/CC are better than those in Camera Raw 4.x in CS3 so it’s worth the upgrade if you can.  Be sure to do a trial to make sure your computer can handle the newer software.

  • I keep getting the warning the dmg files aren't recognized

Is anyone else having issues with .dmg not being recognized? I am currently trying to open an updated xcode .dmg and it is not working.

I got the same message ".dmg file not recognized" (from just one file), and have re-downloaded it several times.  I have tried opening it different ways (in finder, double-clicked, open with, even burning using disk utility) but nothing has worked.
I have just started using MBP with mountain lion.  Is it possible the application is not compatible - mountain lion too new for the program I am downloading?

  • Freehand files aren't recognized by Illustrator CS6?

Am I only the one with this issue? This creates a huge bind after signing up for the full CS6 Creative Cloud service when I have hundreds of archived Freehand vector client jobs that I still refer to by dragging the files into Illustrator. After CS3, CS4 & CS5, I've finally embraced the Adobe Creative Suite workflow completely and confidently updated my OSX system to Lion, generating my Freehand MX application useless. No Freehand. No Freehand support. Must I keep Illustrator CS5.5 on my system indefinitely? Is this a file feature that was overlooked but will appear in the first update?

It might benefit you guys to drop a feature request in the proper place - this here is just a user forum.

  • Attempting to install LiveCycle and English and Core .cab files aren't recognized and then mysteriously disappear

I am attempting to install the free 60-day trial of LiveCycle ES4. It downloads all files into the temp folder. When I begin install I can see the English and Core files in same folder. Install reaches a certain point and then states it can't recognize one or both of those files and tells me to ensure they exist and are accessible. Once I do they both disappear

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Some .dmg files aren't recognized

Hi, I recently just got a new MacBook Pro, after being a PC all of my life. I really love it. Although I did find one problem.
I download GIMP from their website, the Mac version, of course. It downloads correctly, moves into my downloads folder. I click on it, and get the following error:
http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt98/VMKComic/Error.png Please click the url to see the image
I did download the correct version.
This happens with some other programs, but some program downloads DO work. Such as AIM, I had downloaded that, and the installation worked.
    Can anyone hep?

The error means that the download did not complete intact. Try downloading the file again. This will happen on occasion if there is a connection problem between you and the server from which the file was downloaded.

  • M4V files aren't recognized

I'm trying to import an M4V file into iMovie so I can edit it in to a project. When I select to import it sees the file but it isn't activated so that I can click on it. What am I doing wrong?

So you are trying to get the movies off a burned DVD disk. You need some software that extracts the files. They have been compressed and need to be uncompressed for editing in iMovie. You cannot just open them from a DVD disk, unless the DVD is a Data DVD.
You will need to use a third-party software such as Handbrake: http://handbrake.fr/
    Ripit: http://ripitapp.com/
    MPEG Streamclip: http://www.squared5.com/
    DVDxDV: http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
Most will need to be purchased. MPEG Streamclip is free, but may require Apple's QuickTime component ($20) for some MPEG-1 formats. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/

  • Screensaver  files aren't recognized

I just loaded all my files from my laptop (PB G4) via firewire to my new imac (G5). I now have a glitch in the screensaver on the imac (not on my laptop). In system preferences for the savers with slides (Paper Shadow.slideSaver) it says it is looking for slides. The documents are located in System/library/screensaver. I tried copying them to user library/ screensaver/ and that didn't work either.
It works fine on the laptop. The imac in System Prefs will recognize the other listed screensavers (ie. they "work"), but not the .slidesaver ones.
Any suggestions for what to do?

  • After update to cs3, video files aren't recognized

I created a project in cs3. Adobe update manager told me I had an update, so I saved my project, exited cs3, installed the updates, restarted my pc (win xp pro 32 bit) and when I loaded the project, the video files are all shown as off line. When I tried to re-link the video files, adobe gave a message that the video file was corrupt (it is not) or the file type is not supported. How can it be supported in cs3 BEFORE the update and not supported AFTER the update????? Is there a fix? I DO NOT want to recreate this project and I'm limited as the video files are what they are, I can't reshoot them! HELP!!

Bob: Please forgive my ignorance. I did not find a product forum for

the right place. Please guide me to the Adobe Premiere CS3 product forum and
I will gladly repost. Thank you.

I'm a front-end web developer. After I upgraded to the new Firefox, I checked two of my websites that I built.

  • Adobe Reader not recognizing tif files

Why doesn't Adobe Reader recognize tif files?  I created a pdf portfolio using Adobe Acrobat X Pro.  I scanned a black and white document with my Canon flatbed and saved it as a tif file.  I am unable to import the tif file into the pdf portfolio and I keep getting a pop-up that adobe reader does not recognize that type of file.  Anyone else have this problem and find the solution?

Reader should be fine. you don't need to full version to open password protected documents and a Mac doesn't make any difference either.
Fist thing to be sure of is that it's actually Reader opening the docs and not Mac Preview (or something else).
If it is, maybe try having them assign a different password. A more simplistic one just to see if you can open it.

  • Problems viewing large tif files in preview

i'm having trouble viewing large tif files in preview. the tif files are on a cdrom - when i click on the file to open it, it opens only the first 250 pages of the file. the file has approximately 3,000 pages. how can i get preview to open the rest of the pages?
    thanks for any suggestions.
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

no trick - i didn't create the cdrom but it only has 3 tif files with approximately 3000 pages each, not 3000 large tif files. plus several smaller pdf files, but those aren't giving me any problems.
i don't know whether they're compressed, but i still can't get more than the first 250 pages to open, even after copying the file to my desktop. if anyone has any other ideas, i'd much appreciate it.

  • Import Failed, file format not recognized

I have a new Samsung Galaxy S2 phone with 8 mp camera and HD video.  Photoshop Elements 10 doesn't recognize either the photos or videos from the phone.  The file formats are JPG and MP4.  Elements 7 & 9 recognized these files just fine and any files that were already in the catalog from the phone display fine in Elements 10 after upgrading.  I just can't import anything new.  The files downloaded to my computer through the Elements Photo Downloader and will play and display just fine outside of Elements so I know the files aren't corrupt or damaged.  I really need to get this fixed as this device will be my primary mode of taking pictures and video.

    Try this as a test:
Open one of the failing JPG files in another application, such as XnView.  Use that application to save the file.  Then see if Organizer will import that photo.
Sometimes the JPG metadata is corrupted just enough for PSE to choke on it, although other apps can open the file just fine.  Saving the file from another app will re-write the metadata correctly.

  • Lr Mobile 1.2.1 does not recognize .tif files added to iPhone 6 + iOS8 Camera Roll

I use an app called ProCamera 8 to save images taken with my iPhone 6 to uncompressed TIF files or TIF files with LZW compression.  The problem is that Lr Mobile doesn't see any kind of TIF file in my iPhone camera roll at all.  I've tried to:
Save the photo taken by PC8 directly to the camera roll
Save the photo taken by PC8 to it's own "Lightbox" folder, then export it to the camera roll.
Manually import the TIF files that appear in the iPhone's camera roll using Lr Mobile's Add From Camera Roll command. TIF files in the camera roll don't even appear in the list of photos!
None of the above methods will get a TIF file into a Lr Mobile collection.
If I repeat the process with JPG files, everything works as expected, and all 3 methods listed above will get the JPG images into LR Mobile.
I think this is a bug (and a serious one) because TIF files in Lr Desktop that are added to a collection that is synced with Lr Mobile appear Lr Mobile on my iPhone immediately.  So I know that Lr Mobile supports the display and editing of TIF source files.
Until this is fixed, is there a workaround possible?
    Thanks,
    Jeff
EDIT: The native Photos app in iOS 8 displays all of the TIF files correctly.

The latest update to Lightroom Mobile now recognizes Tif files. Strangely, in the import window they show up with with a RAW label on them but, once imported, the metadata labels them as tiffs. This made me wonder if LR mobile also now supported actual RAW files. Alas, a quick test proved this to not be the case.
That said, this is pretty cool news for those who take pictures with their phone's camera. I too use a camera app that allows me to save images as tiff files. Now these files can be imported to LR Mobile and edited using the array of tools found there. I've always liked Lightroom's superior versions of tools like Clarity, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, and Darks but found them of little use on Jpgs, due to the smaller amount of data they contain. While Tiffs aren't quite as info packed as RAW files, they are a huge step better than jpgs.
One slight caveat which, depending on your outlook could be either a good or bad thing. When you save a tiff file from LRMobile it automatically converts the image to a jpg and reduces the image size to around 63% of the original image (the native size of a photo taken with my iPhone 6, 2448x3264, is reduced to 1536x2048). At first I was rather upset with this, as far as I can tell, unchangable automatic action. However, after thinking about it a while it occured to me, that for my use of LRMobile at least, it is not such a bad idea.
FIrst let me say that I do not see my iPhone or my iPad Air as optimal photo editing devices. For serious editing I'm going to use my computer hooked up to my calibrated 27" NEC monitor. However, for doing some quick fixes/adjustments on iPhone snapshots this makes complete sense. Most other mobile editing apps only support jpg as do most of the major social sharing sites on the web. A smaller sized image, and it's inherrent smaller file size, is also better for emailing, sharing on websites, etc especially if you are using cellular data to upload with. Admittedly I would have prefered the option to save as either a tiff of jpg and also the option to select  the image size, but overall this "feature" is OK with me. As I said if your usage of LR Mobile differs from mine you could well be holding your head in your hands moaning by now.
While I'm still waiting for the ability to edit keywords and other metadata, the thing that would make LR Mobile an essential app for me, this addition of tiff support has actually gotten it out of my "Archive" folder and back in to use.
PS: one thing that has always worked well is the sync between devices (internet required) so it is geeat for getting your phone photos onto the your iPad.
