Tif won't open in Adobe Camera Raw editor

Photo tif file won't open in Adobe Camera Raw editor from Adobe Bridge - but it will open into Photoshop.  Seems tifs WILL open into raw editor IF they have not been edited in Adobe Photoshop.  Its like working on the tif in Photoshop makes the file un-openable in raw editor.  This seems to be a new problem since I upgraded from cs4 on a PC to cs5 on a Mac.

Thanks for that tip, Jeff, I appreciate it!

  • Why external editor Cs5 doesn't open in Adobe Camera Raw window?

I am workning in Apertute 3 and I want to edit some photos in Photoshop Cs5. I am working with RAW files, but when I want to open the file in external editor, it doesn't open in Adobe Camera Raw so I am loosing the Adobe Camera Raw adjustment abilities. Is there perhaps a way how to set up Aperture to comunicate with Photoshop Cs5 so it opens photos in Camera Raw window? I think in previous version of Aperture this was possible. Thanks.

Editing in the external editor (from within aperture) is only possible for Versions, not for masters, afaik. Since it would be pointless to export a Version again in some raw format, Aperture offers high quality lossless formats to export versions - tiff and Photoshop psd.
If you want to do the raw processing externally, you will have to edit the master image file:
export the master, or reveal a managed master and copy it to Photoshop, then reimport it.
To edit the master in Photoshop and to reimport it, you could use an automator service: I put a sample workflow and some instructions on how to use and modify it on this page: feel free to modify it according to your needs.

  • Opening in adobe camera raw??

Some times I want to open in adobe camera raw and then have the changes automaticly applied back in aperture with out having to save and export the file. I thought I would be smart and have bridge be my external file editor but then when I am done I do not see the changes in aperture

Not possible to do it automatically. Aperture uses a different RAW processor than ACR. If you want to process in ACR then you can save out of it as a TIFF or PSD and manually import that file into Aperture.

  • Jpegs opened in Adobe Camera RAW

With students new to digital photography and who are capturing in jpeg out of fear for the difficulties they assume go with RAW, I have found it useful to have them open some of their jpeg files in Adobe Camera RAW. They become familiar with the tools there and are willing to switch to RAW capture.
My question is this:  What happens to that jpeg image if they set ACR to 16 bits and they continue to open their jpeg image into Photoshop (or Elements) with ACR set to 16 bits.  Since that data isn't contained in the jpeg file, what does ACR do?  Does it "manufacture" extra data?
    Mary Lou

With either 8-bits or 16-bits black is 0 and white is the highest possible number, so adding bits just adds precision to the numbers, not extra data.  With 16-bits you get 256 colors between each of the original 256-colors of the 8-bit JPG so it’s like having fractional colors compared to the original 8-bit colors.
An analogous situation using decimal numbers might be:  if the JPG starts with 3 decimal digits of precision then the numbers could range from 000 to 999 with 000 being black to 999 being white, but if you doubled the number of digits to 6 then the color numbers would range from 000.000 to 999.000.  These are exactly the same values as we started with, but if we choose to manipulate the colors, which is the point of using ACR in the first place, then we don’t lose information.

  • D600 .NEF files won't open in CS5 Camera Raw?

.NEF files taken on my new Nikon D600 won't open in CS5 Bridge Camera Raw.
Error Message:   The Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in did not recognise the format of one or more files."
.NEF files taken with the Nikon D90 are opening perfectly.
There must be plug-ins available - I just can't seem to find them. Can someone send a link please?
I am working on a Mac
URGENT help please - I have a whole wedding to edit!

D600 raw files only open in CS6/ACR7.3.  You need to upgrade your Photoshop.   http://www.adobe.com/photoshop/
An alternative is to use the free DNG Converter to convert your NEFs to DNGs and those will open in older ACR versions.  Another alternative is to get Lightroom 4.3.

  • I have CS3 Photoshop and it won't open my Nikon camera raw files.

I checked the RAW version in Photoshop and it is 4.0, why won't my files open?

And what camera? Support for specific cameras is tied to specific versions of ACR. An old version of ACR will never open Raw files from a contemporary camera. Refer to this:

  • D800 raw won't open in CS6, Camera Raw 7.1

My nikon d800 raw files are visable through Adobe Bridge, but only as a Raw Icon, it does not show the image. When I right click on it to open in Camera Raw, I get a message that says "Camera Raw cannot open this file. If you are attempting to open a raw file from a digital camera, make sure you have the latest Camera Raw Update...".
I am a bit confused because I am using the latest Photoshop CS6 (subscription), updated to Camera Raw 7.1

The files are likely corrupted, then, either by your camera or computer hardware, or by software you are running on your computer.   Posting a file online, or sending it to an e-mail address of an interested user after private-messaging them would help determine if your Adobe software is confused or if the files are corrupt.  Do you have any other way to view the files outside of Adobe software, a Nikon-licensed  viewer, perhaps, not the previews that many programs know how to look at, but the raw-data, itself.
Did you use Nikon Transfer to move the files to your computer?  If so, it is an obsolete program that Nikon has advised people not to use because it corrupts the metadata in Nikon raw files of the newest cameras so that Adobe doesn’t recognize them.
A couple more suggestions for self-diagnosing what might be wrong:
    1)      Copy the files from a card-reader to your hard-drive using your operating system utilities (Windows Explorer or Finder), and then try to open in Photoshop, directly, (using File / Open) to minimize the number of things that have touched the files between when the camera wrote them to the card and Adobe software tried to interpret them.
    2)      Download a D800 raw file from a separate source and see if that file works.  This will help narrow down if it is something about your camera or memory card or cable or reader or transfer process or if it is a misconfiguration of Adobe Photoshop.  Here is a sample D800 RAW file from DPReview:  http://movies.dpreview.com.s3.amazonaws.com/nikon_d800/DSC_0241.NEF.zip  from this page:  http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-d800-d800e/33
I can verify that the DSC_0241.NEF file downloaded from DPReview opens in PS-CS6/ACR7.1 and the thumbnail is visible in Bridge.

  • Leica M9 and Aperture3 not showing camera aperture setting when import DNG files.  Shutter speed and ISO are indicated, but not aperture.  When I export and open in Adobe Camera Raw aperture setting is displayed.

Does any one have a suggestion as to how to get A3 to show the camera aperture setting on Leica M9 DNG files?

You will want to read this thread in its entirety.
The short story (as I understand it) is that the M9 body receives no information about aperture from attached lenses.  It is able to derive an estimate of the aperture, though, and it lists this derived number in the metadata field "Approximate F-stop" (not the exact field name).  Aperture (the program) does not report the contents of this proprietary field.

  • Open with External Editor Adobe Camera Raw = HOW?

When I export a RAW file to the External Editor (I've chosen Photoshop CS3) I would like for it to open in Adobe Camera Raw, just like any RAW file that I open in Photoshop outside of Aperture.
However it bypasses Adobe Camera Raw and opens directly in Photoshop.
I have the "Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG files" and "for Supported RAW files" boxes checked in the Photoshop Prefs.
I see some chatter about Hot folders and Automator around here, but no definitive answer/workaround.
If Aperture doesn't support exporting to Adobe Camera Raw, it is a HUGE leg-up for Lightroom in the RAW workflow department.
Please tell me I'm missing a checkbox somewhere... Thanks.

You're not missing a checkbox, you're missing a fundamental issue of how Aperture (and LightRoom for that matter) work.
When you use the Open in External Editor command, Aperture will convert the RAW file, apply any adjustments you have made, and send the resulting PSD or TIFF file to the external editor.
The original file is NOT sent and there is no option to do so. Why not? Because Aperture Versions do not exist as discrete image files - the adjustments are shown on-the-fly each time you view it, saving on the space taken up by multiple TIFF/PSD/JPEG files for each Version. As ACR uses a totally different RAW conversion & adjustment engine from Aperture, Aperture wouldn't be able to display any changes made in ACR without including the entire conversion engine of ACR, which Adobe might not be too happy about...
In other words, if you want to use a different RAW convertor you will have to export the Master, convert it in the other app, and then import the resulting 'normal' image file back into Aperture. The same is true for LightRoom.

  • Can't open a JPEG in Adobe Camera RAW 4.3.1

I'm trying to open a jpg file from bridge to ACR using the cmnd+r combination and nothing happens.
I can only view jpg files in ACR when I apply changes to them in Lightroom. Then I just double click on them (or cmnd+o) and they open in Adobe Camera RAW.
    Anyone can help?
    I'm using OS X 10.5.2

In Bridge > Preferences > Thumbnails I've enabled the checkbox that says:
"Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG and TIFF files"
In Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling > File Compatibility I've enabled the checkbox that says:
"Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG Files"
In ACR > Camera Raw Preferences > JPEG and TIFF Handling I have enabled the checkboxes that says:
"Always open JPEG files with settings using Camera Raw"
"Always open TIFF files with settings using Camera Raw"
    What I'm I doing wrong?

  • Adobe camera raw will not respond in bridge cs6?

adobe camera raw does not respond in adobe bridge? I am trying to open Jpegs, which i have previously been able to do so by right clicking and opening in adobe camera raw. Now it is unresponsive.

You are definitely in the wrong forum for Bridge CS6 and Adobe Camera Raw. You have posted in the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum (video editing focus).
You probably want to be posting in the Photoshop Forum.
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop
My preliminary findings suggest possible workaround
    a. Open camera raw in Photoshop 5 or 5.5 and then open edited raw image in Bridge CS6
    or
    b. There is a preferences route to check out.
Not being a Photoshop user, this is a quick suggestion where you might start looking. This is apparently a known issue.
The Photoshop users should be able to give you all the details and options you have for workarounds for now.

  • Information in Histogram in Adobe Camera RAW

Since I capture my images in RAW, when I open them in Adobe Camera RAW (via Elements 11), what information is displayed in the image and the histogram I see?
Is it showing me the jpeg created in the camera?  If so, the jpeg settings in my camera are not only important in viewing the LCD and the histogram in my camera at the time of capture. They would also be important in viewing my image when it first opens in Adobe Camera RAW.
    Thanks for some input.

Perhaps you can answer a related question on Camera RAW.  When I open an image captured in RAW format, I see an image and histogram in Adobe Camera Raw.  Am I correct in assuming that the opening image and histogram are created from the camera's jpeg settings?
No...Camera Raw rips the entire raw image and does a demosaic and application of ACR defaults to generate the preview and the histogram (which is displaying the resulting graph based on the output color space set in ACR Workflow Options). ACR doesn't use ANY settings from the camera's JPEG settings and the only thing that ACR uses from the raw file is white balance info and the ISO metadata...

  • Editing in Adobe Camera Raw

Is it possible, when setting Photoshop Elements as the external editor in iPhoto, to have Raw files open in Adobe Camera Raw?  I tried this for a friend today and the Raw file opened in the Editor Window.  We worked around this by first exporting the file and then opening it in Adobe Camera Raw.
It would be nice if iPhoto could do this automatically.

  • Elements 12 and Adobe Camera Raw

If I load a Canon CR2 file into the 'editor' the image is opened in Adobe Camera Raw 8 - that is fine. If I then make a change to the exposure slider, or any other, and click 'done' ACR shuts down. Not very good, anyone know what is going on?

  • Aperture export to Adobe camera Raw

I have been unable to get Aperture to function fast enough for raw editing
Does anyone know of a simple automation script that when I export a Master file out of Aperture to say a special folder the raw image will be automatically opened in Adobe camera raw?
    Thanks,
    Christopher.

I'm seeing alot of info on the Hot folder for getting images into Aperture. But nothing going the other way. All of this "apple scrip, folder actions, automater" stuff is a bit overwhelming.
I believe I need a script that will open a raw file in Photoshop ( photoshop should see that it's Raw and open ACR first.)
I guess the script should be "open this file with this application" but I don't know how to write that.
the next step I believe is to attach that script as a folder action
So when I export a master file out of Aperture to this "Hot Folder" the script will run that simply opens it in ACR.
    can anyone help with this?
